Introduction and Requirements For a two person act (with NO codes), with a group of people in your hotel room, an item, playing card or anything for that matter could be chosen. A long distance number is given to a specific spectator who dials the number and speaks with the Mentalistʼs partner at the other end. The partner not only describes in detail some of the people in the room, what they are wearing and other details of the meeting but also (with no pumping or ANY clues from the Mentalist) reveals the thought of object. There are no plants either. The only prerequisite is a hotel room with an adjoining room (the kind with the door in-between them). The Mentalistʼs partner is already in the second room keenly listening to what is transpiring in the meeting. People names, short little “descriptions” (sometimes provided by the Mentalist, other times just comments from the spectators) and of course the thought of object. The partner once learning all this quietly closes the door or leaves the room so that no one will hear them talking on the phone at the same time as they hear someone on the phone. Also, make sure that the is Set to VIBRATE in case you did not remember, so that it will not be heard in the other room where this effect is being presented. 2

The partner has a cellular phone. The beauty of cellular phones is that even if you are out of your own local coverage area, the number can be automatically forwarded to wherever you program it for. The rest is all showmanship. I first heard of this as an idea presented by Annemman in one of his books. What I proposed would be good for a 2 person (Jeff and Tessa, Tuckers, Piddingtonʼs) type act. However, if the Mentalistʼs “manager” or advance man were to set this up, the Mentalist could easily be the one that gets the specific credit. A packet of cards is displayed, containing pictures of various items dangerous to a mouse with the exception of one card bearing the picture of cheese. These cards are mixed up and dealt in a circle on the table. You wind up Merlin and place him in the centre of the cards where he runs around until he stops. You place Merlin on top of the card he is facing and show the ones on each side of it are indeed dangerous. When you turn over Merlinʼs card it is seen that he has found “the cheese”.
