BIODIVERSITY

ACTIVITY 1: QUESTIONS FOR REFLECTIONS DIRECTION: PLEASE ANSWER THE FOLLOWING REFLECTION QUESTIONS. 1. How would you reconcile the emerging needs of human beings regarding their health and the need to protect the growth of biodiversity? -

Human beings have necessities, In order for them to sustain their lives. They must have food, shelter, water and clothing but with the emerging needs of human beings. Biodiversity loss is taking place. In order to reconcile the needs of human beings and the need to protect the growth of biodiversity. I guess we should do the following; first, we should invest more in farming and agriculture, the more the plants and the animals the better for the health of our ecosystem. Extensive focus on agriculture could help us bridge the gap between the needs of humans and the growth of diversity. However, we should not only harvest but we should learn how to plant and produce, the more the species, the better. Secondly, we should patronize natural way of farming and taking care of animals. Before, when there are still no fertilizers and feeds. Plants and Animals are both healthy to eat without side effects. But now. Since we are more on the modern way of farming. We commonly use feeds and fertilizers so that our plants and animals would grow faster and bigger. Therefore, it is more prone to health issues like problems with kidney, lungs and cancer. Moreover, Fertilizers has also harmful effects to the growth of biodiversity like pollution, acidification of the soil, and removal of the nutrients of the soil. With this effects, our biodiversity will be affected negatively that could lead to biodiversity loss. and Lastly, to reconcile the two aspects, I think we should not waste foods, because we get food from biodiversity. If we always get without producing. There could be a shortage in the food.

2. Do you think the Earth can exist without human beings taking care of it? Or biodiversity also needs human beings for it to be in a continuous growing process? -

3.

In my opinion, biodiversity needs human beings for it to be in a continues growing process. Having humans with biodiversity creates balance, without human beings, the number of animals will grow and multiply. Since there are no eaters of animals, Animals will tend to eat plants in order to survive with life. If the supplies of plants are gone, therefore, there will be no oxygen and food to help animals to survive. Thus, these may result to the death of animals and the earth would become useless. Therefore, human plays a vital role in the continuous growth of biodiversity. Without them, there will be an imbalance.

What are small ways that you can think would promote safekeeping our biodiversity? What do you think are the common human activities that can harm biodiversity? What would be the consequences if these human activities might be stopped and prohibited?

In my opinion, for us to promote safekeeping of our biodiversity. We should provide and keep them a safe and large habitat for us to preserve biodiversity. In connection with this, we should place animals in their normal habitat. We should prevent invasive species from entering into other habitats. Because if we allow them to enter, they may eat the other species and lead to biodiversity loss, and most important of all, we must preserve, reproduce, and protect our biodiversity. Because, biodiversity is the reason of our existence until now. The common human activities that could harm biodiversity are; first, the conversion of land for economic gain. Such as a farm is turned into a subdivision. With this, the natural habitat of animals will be lost and could cause problems. Over-exploitation may also harm biodiversity, by over hunting, fishing, and collecting of species these leads to extinction. Like The Philippine Eagle which is now already an endangered species. The use of chemicals and cars by humans also cause pollution which affects the animal’s growth. Thus, If humans stops doing these things. Our Biodiversity will be better and it will also improve the health of our ecosystem.

ACTIVIT 2: CONCEPT MAPPING 1. List down several concepts that the society or human beings benefit from biodiversity. On the other circle, enumerate the different challenges and disadvantages that biodiversity suffers as we work our way to acquire the benefits. 2. On the space where the two circles meet, list down the possible ways and strategies on how we could acquire these benefits and needs without compromising the growth process of biodiversity.

1. Provides Foods for humans

1. Preserve Biodiversity

2. Provides Medicines and Clothing

2. Do not destroy Habitat and Avoid using Chemicals.

3. Provides Income

3. Do not hund Endangered Species

4. Means of Transportation and Protection

4. Do not burn fuels and throw plastics at sea

1. Biodiversity Loss through OverExploitation 2. Habitat Loss and Destruction 3. Climate Change 4. Pollution
