Reaction Paper: Artificial Intelligence

The movie A.I. Artificial Intelligence shows the journey of an android robot, David, who wanted to become a real boy to regain the love of her mother, Monica. In a general perspective, it shows how advance our technology may become in the next centuries to the point that we can now live together with human robots, and worse, they can totally dominate the human race. It forces us to ponder where we've been and where we might be going. However, as I was watching movie, there are some movie scenes which shows us more than the scientific and technological stuffs such as family relationships, unconditional love, journey for dreams and a lot more. When Henry Swinton brought David to their house, I agreed to what Monica said that there is nothing that can substitute their own child. I remember Jodi Sta. Maria in the movie ‘Maria Leonora Teresa’ where she said that, “Ang pagiging ina ay pag-aalaga ng mga bata, hindi ng hayop, at lalong hindi ng manyika!”. David may look like a real boy but I believe that Monica can never consider nor treat him as his own child because she has a real child, Martin, and she will never neglect him just because of his health condition. People tend to easily jump to conclusions. That is one of the things I realized as I was watching the scenes during David’s stay at the Swintons. Due to the series of unusual things that David did, they decided to stay him away from the family without further investigation of what happened. I guess that is a part of our nature as humans. We easily judge everything without sufficient evidence and analysis. It really made me cry when Monica left David on the forest. I feel sorry to David because all he wants is to be loved by her mother but then he was abandoned, confused on what was happening. For some reasons, I was displeased on what Monica did. I know that she doesn’t want David to be destroyed by Cybertronics that was why she left him alone with Teddy. However, she also knows that David has emotions and he is programmed with a capacity to love and to dream but that’s the thing that Monica missed out. In reality, if we’re going to decide on something, then let’s pursue it until the very end. It is not good to leave someone without explaining to that person why you’ll leave him. The same case applies to Monica, she should’ve let David to be totally destroyed than leaving him hanging and confused. Unfortunately, we can do our best to satisfy someone but it’ll never be enough especially if they look for something that we do not have.

The latter part of the movie focuses on his journey in finding the Blue Fairy hoping that she can help him be a real boy. He believed that she can turn him into a real boy just like what the fairy did to Pinocchio. That kind of magic only exist in fairytales but I can’t blame him because since he’s a mecha, he doesn’t have enough understanding and all he wants to be real because he thinks that being unreal is the reason why his mother Monica left him. Nevertheless, this is best lesson that I learned from the story: If you really want to achieve something, nothing can hinder you from reaching your dreams. With regards to the different scientific technological advancements shown in the movie, I was really impressed on the imagination of human mind. It makes me want to live for a long period of time so I can witness all the things that are soon to be invented by humans. During our era, scientists and companies have been introducing various types of robots and machines that function in factory production, security, and so on. In addition, life-like or humanoid robots already exist as well. They are advantageous but it can also turn into an alarming phenomenon because what happened on the movie is possible to happen in the real world. This might be the future of human evolution but I just hope that the creations will not dominate the creators. To summarize, this movie inspired me in many different ways. It is more than emphasizing what humans can do through technology, that there’s a lot more than the inventions. It made me realize that life is a never ending process; the end of something is just the beginning of another. And lastly, the real realness is beyond what the eyes can see; it’s about the genuineness of the heart.
