Seventh Degree No. 11 CONCURRENCE In the following quotation H. Spencer Lewis, first Imperator of AMORC, denounces the narrow attitude held by scientists for centuries concerning what Rosicrucians have always asserted about the subject of auras. Their attitude is shown in their long-standing denial of the existence of any phenomena over which they have no control and which cannot be made the object of practical demonstration at any given moment. This same skepticism is shown toward metaphysical laws and principles that run counter to the accepted dogmas of mainstream science. As long as most scientists deny that humans possess a soul and that the universe is the work of a Cosmic Intelligence, mystics will experience considerable difficulty in having their ideas accepted. All objects have auras, as science has now proven. This judgment confirms what mystics have taught for centuries, namely that all substances, animate and inanimate alike, radiate a certain energy. Briefly stated, the aura is a vibratory emanation given off by all material bodies, and its effect may be compared to the electromagnetic field of a magnet. Before AMORC researchers were able to demonstrate irrefutably that humans possess an aura whose magnetism and electricity can be measured at least in part, mainstream science considered the aura, and the human aura in particular, to be a thing of myth. Mystics, in fact, encountered strong opposition when they ventured to suggest that certain aspects of the aura could be revealed, measured, and recorded. As human beings, we are sensitive to the emanations of auras, and we interpret the sensations we receive as pleasant or unpleasant, good or bad, attractive or repellent. The more we develop our psychic sensitivities to these subtle emanations, the more we are able to perceive the inner nature of those people with whom we come in contact each day. The increasing development of this sensitivity is only one of the benefits which the Rosicrucian student enjoys. All the laws and all the principles pertaining to human beings and our relation to the universe are taught to us in order that we may lead a full, happy life. —HARVEY SPENCER LEWIS (1883–1939) 2

Dear Fratres and Sorores, Of all the phenomena termed psychic, the aura is certainly the one undergoing the most intensive scientific research at present. This interest is a relatively recent development, as such subjects were long considered purely speculative in nature and were usually classed as psychological occurrences. However, the aura has always been a part of those “mysteries” to which initiates through the centuries have given their attention. Let us therefore examine what the Rosicrucian tradition teaches regarding this phenomenon. As you will soon find, the knowledge we have been provided is quite thorough and it deals with laws that scientists will someday demonstrate. THE AURA: First of all, it is important to understand that the aura is not a phenomenon exhibited only by living things. All material substances, in fact, emit a radiation whose intensity is determined by the particles composing them. This radiation, as we explained in the Second Atrium Degree, results from the constant interaction taking place between the vibrations of the substance itself and those of its immediate environment. All vibrations, of course, have their origin in spirit energy, energy without which no form of matter could exist. Thus, everything in the world of manifestation—whether a grain of sand, a rock, or a planet—possesses an aura that scientists can now detect and can usually measure with the aid of highly sophisticated instruments. To understand better the nature of the aura surrounding physical substances, we need only to consider the electromagnetic field surrounding certain metals—magnetite, or lodestone, in particular. In this instance, the existence of such a field cannot be doubted, for it acts directly upon other particles of matter. For instance, one may readily examine the force of attraction and repulsion possessed by natural or artificial magnets. However, we must keep in mind that what is visible is not this force, but rather the effect that it produces. In other words, one cannot actually see the electromagnetism emitted by a magnet; however, the action that it produces is observable. On another level, the same principle applies to the objects found all around us, for they possess a radiation that exerts a subtle influence on the environment. In plants and animals, the aura takes on another dimension, for in addition to the vibrations of Spirit, they are animated by Vital Life Force. Because of this, the radiation emitted by their bodies is a combination of these two energies which, as you 3

will remember, constitute the two polarities of Nous. The vibratory nature of this combination is such that scientists have not yet succeeded in measuring it. Concerning this subject, let us state that the effects obtained by Semyon D. Kirlian, a Soviet electronic scientist working in the mid-twentieth century, did not result in a photograph of the aura surrounding living beings, as is commonly thought, but probably showed a secondary manifestation of this radiation. To be more precise, this effect may arise from the interaction produced between the subject’s body and the light source to which it is subjected at the moment the photograph is taken. If valid, the experiments performed by Kirlian may nonetheless serve to demonstrate that all living beings possess an energizing body within their physical body. They may also confirm that this body’s energy form is unalterable, for Kirlian’s electrophotography of leaves that have been cut reveal their original contour as well as the missing part. In addition, the colors produced vary according to the species, age, and health of the tree from which the specimen was taken. The same phenomenon applies to humans. In other words, the colors perceived around the hands of a child are not the same as those of an adult. Furthermore, the colors vary depending upon whether a person is subject to illness, or is under the influence of certain emotions, or is unconscious, or is performing deep breathing. On certain Kirlian negatives it is even possible to detect acupuncture points. Observations such as these have aroused considerable interest in the aura and they serve as the basis for more thorough research. Within human beings the aura assumes a third dimension because we possess an individual soul that has its origin in the Universal Soul. In other words, humans are permeated with a spiritual essence that constitutes our true personality and which, as we will learn in the next degree, evolves through a number of incarnations so as to realize the perfection of its own nature. This essence corresponds to an energy whose vibratory frequency is much higher than that of Spirit and Vital Life Force. That is why it is presently impossible to measure the intensity of its radiations or to prove its existence through experiments similar to those conducted by Kirlian. Science will perhaps succeed someday in proving its existence, but it is doubtful that they will succeed in defining exactly what it is on the energy level. EFFECTS OF THE AURA: In all sacred writings allusion is made to the aura of certain persons. This aura, which is often 4

Rosicrucian Order

called a halo, aureole, nimbus, or light, surrounds the body, especially the head and shoulders. Usually it is mentioned with regard to a messiah, prophet, or sage who is thought to be divine. In such cases the aura is the sign of an intensely spiritual life and a high degree of evolution. Sometimes it is even seen as proof that such persons carry within themselves the Light of the Divine. In the sacred art of many religions, most notably that of Christianity and Buddhism, saints and divinities are depicted with auras of varying intensity and shape, corresponding to the importance accorded to them. In such representations, the aura is often shown as a halo or a crown, thus associating the symbolism of light with that of the circle. Many people seem to think that the aura is a phenomenon perceived only in terms of color. In reality, its radiations can be experienced in various ways. For example, you have probably stood next to a person and experienced either an agreeable or a disagreeable sensation. More often than not, this feeling results from the effect that this person’s aura produces on your own. Moreover, certain individuals seem to “radiate.” Without speaking a word, they will attract others to them. On the other hand, some people seem to distance themselves from others, but then try to draw attention to themselves. In fact, we are constantly being subjected to the subtle vibrations emanating from every person we come near. As a consequence, a permanent vibratory exchange is set up between their inner being and ours, with such exchanges resulting in feelings of attraction or repulsion. Naturally, we must be careful when interpreting the impressions received in the presence of another person, for such impressions are not always the result of the interaction between that person’s aura and our own. We can be influenced in our judgment by someone’s appearance, voice, and manner of dressing, only to discover later on that we have been misled. For instance, if a person’s appearance is pleasant, we are inclined to think that he or she is kind, intelligent, mystically or spiritually inclined, etc., even though this may not be the case. Conversely, if the person’s general appearance is unattractive, or if he or she is careless in his or her dress, we may be prejudiced in the opposite way. For that matter, it is interesting to note that many blind people are particularly sensitive to auras and that they rarely make mistakes in interpreting the impressions they receive from various people. The reason for this is that since they cannot see, they have been obliged to develop their psychic sight and to trust their intuition to a greater degree. 5

In contrast to humans, animals perceive auras instinctively. A cat, for example, will seek out a kind person to pet her, for she feels a sense of security and affection when being stroked. On the other hand, the cat will invariably run away from someone who means to do her harm or in whom she senses dislike. In the same way, a dog will surely know when his master is ill or troubled, and he will go to the person and lick his or her hand to indicate fidelity and love. The dog may, however, show aggression toward a visitor who exhibits fear, for he interprets such fear as a sign of submission. The animal will then use this opportunity to demonstrate his instinct to dominate. Reactions such as these come about because animals are sensitive to the radiations constantly being given off by everyone. These radiations reflect an individual’s inner personality and psychological state at the moment. We will return to this discussion in the next monograph. Many experiments have demonstrated that plants are equally sensitive to the aura of the individuals who care for them. They usually grow more rapidly and bloom more profusely when these people possess a positive nature or are motivated by noble feelings and ideals. The reverse is also true: plants tend to do poorly when they are subjected to negative influences. Thus, it has been observed that a flower which has been cut with love wilts much less rapidly than one which has been gathered with indifference or scorn. In some instances, the flower may even exhibit a form of mummification, in that it dries out without losing its petals. There exists, therefore, a continuous interaction between humans and their environment, and this interaction is due in great part to the electromagnetic properties of the aura. We will continue with the study of this subject in the next lesson. In the meantime, read through the experiment found in this week’s Practical Application and try it out as soon as you can. With best wishes for Peace Profound, Sincerely and fraternally, YOUR CLASS MASTER

Practical Application “Whatsoever thou resolvest to do, do it quickly. Defer not till the evening what the morning may accomplish.”—Unto Thee I Grant

When you have the opportunity, find a flower and pick it gently while sending it loving thoughts. You may even talk to it and ask its forgiveness for taking its life. Explain that your desire is not to make it die, but to enjoy its beauty for as long as possible. In other words, hold the same attitude toward this flower as you would toward a human being capable of understanding and feeling your emotions. Place it in your cupped hands, close your eyes, and visualize it surrounded with a shining aura. While doing this visualization, breathe deeply and positively. When you return home, put the flower in a vase or a glass of water, and place it in your Sanctum. Then return to look at it from time to time. Place both of your hands above it and while breathing deep, positive breaths, visualize it once more with a luminous aura and send it loving thoughts. You will notice that this flower will fade much less rapidly than it would ordinarily, and it may actually dry out gradually without ever losing its petals. You will thus have proof that it is sensitive to the combined radiation of your magnetism and your own aura.

Seventh Degree No. 12 CONCURRENCE Only in relatively recent times have scientists become interested in the phenomenon of the aura. Among the scholars who devoted themselves to serious study in this field, Dr. Charles Littlefield was surely one of the best in understanding the nature and origin of its radiation. This understanding was due in large measure to his close association with the Rosicrucians of his day—and particularly with H. Spencer Lewis, former Imperator of our Order. The following excerpt is from The Beginning and Way of Life. Until we understand the fundamental power of which the aura is composed, we cannot expect to arrive at a clear comprehension of the phenomenon which gives rise to its different manifestations. The fundamental basis of which the aura of all living things is composed, is none other than that wonderful, life-giving principle of nature, which I have elsewhere called the vital force, and which I have shown to be magnetic in its nature. True, it is called by many writers “Life Essence,” “Vital Force,” “Principle of Energy,” etc., but no one has, heretofore, defined just what it is. . . . [T]he shade of color of the aura changes with change of mental states. This can only happen by change in vibration, because exactly the same vibration would give at all times exactly the same shade of color. Mental states, then, control by vibrations the color bands of the aura. This is an important discovery. —CHARLES W. LITTLEFIELD, M.D. (1859–1945)

Dear Fratres and Sorores, After devoting the previous monograph to a general presentation of the aura, today we will study its characteristics as found in humans. Rosicrucians consider the aura to be, by definition, a combination of the radiations emanating continuously from the physical body, psychic body, and spiritual body—the latter of which we prefer to call soul. This is why the aura itself appears as a luminous halo composed of a series—or more exactly, by a superimposition— of three auras. We shall now look at the nature of each of these three auras and examine the characteristics of each. THE PHYSICAL AURA: The physical body, as a material substance, owes its existence to spirit energy. We will not reexamine the nature of this energy at this time, for it was the object of a detailed study in the First Temple Degree. At this point, however, we must indicate that as this energy vibrates throughout our body it emits a bioelectromagnetic radiation which constitutes, in fact, our physical aura. The intensity of this aura is practically the same from one person to another, for it corresponds to the activity of electrons, protons, and neutrons that compose all organic matter. Its existence is now recognized by scientists, for they can measure its vibratory frequency quite precisely. Some researchers have done some intriguing work concerning the electromagnetic characteristics which the physical aura exhibits under certain conditions, notably when it is subjected to the influence of nearby electric or magnetic fields. The physical aura of each individual follows the contour of the body and has a relatively low vibrational frequency. Even so, it is not readily visible to the naked eye. Its radiation is uniform, steady, and relatively dense. To those who are able to perceive it, it appears as a luminous band that is 1–2 centimeters (½ – ¾ inch) wide. Actually, this aura is what one first discerns when the psychic sight becomes active. It corresponds strictly to the material part of each individual, and for this reason its existence is solely the consequence of the atomic structure of our physical being. THE PSYCHIC AURA: In previous monographs we studied the psychic body and learned that it is formed of an energy which is intermediate between that of Spirit and of Soul. Consequently, it possesses its own radiation, which in itself constitutes the psychic aura. This aura is of a higher vibratory frequency than that coming from the physical body. It is generally perceived as a luminous haze extending 11

Rosicrucian Order

AMORC

Degree 7

Initiate Section Number 12

approximately 50 centimeters (20 inches) beyond the body. This haze is most intense, and consequently most easily perceived, around the head and shoulders. Its intensity is due to the activities of the pineal gland, pituitary gland, and the psychic centers that are located in the neck and upper part of the chest—namely, the thyroid, thymus, and heart. It is easy to see that the psychic aura is closely linked to the Vital Life Force permeating every cell of our body. You may think of it, in fact, as an extension of the positive polarity of this force, whereas its negative polarity is associated with the vitality of the physical body. Since we know that all illness results from an imbalance between these two polarities, you may rightly conclude that this aura reflects most clearly the state of our health. Moreover, it is a perfect indicator of the nature of our thoughts and emotions, in that its radiation is much more intense when we are at peace with ourselves than when we let ourselves fall prey to negative feelings. THE SPIRITUAL AURA: From a mystical point of view, human beings are more than just living beings, for we each have within us a spiritual body, which we call the soul, that justifies not only our existence, but our presence on Earth. This spiritual body, which is evolving within us according to the law of reincarnation, corresponds to a particularly high level of energy on the vibratory scale. Consequently, the radiation that it constantly gives off transcends or extends beyond both the psychic aura and physical aura. For people who are highly evolved spiritually, this radiation may extend for several meters (yards) and become intensely luminous. This is true of Masters and, in general, of all initiates who have attained a state of consciousness close to perfection. As you can readily understand, few people are able to perceive the spiritual aura surrounding the body of every individual, even though this aura may be quite large and bright. To do this, a person must attain a relatively high degree of evolution or be gifted with a measure of clairvoyance. Even so, we may become aware of its radiation quite unexpectedly and without even trying to do so. Most frequently this occurs when we are in a subjective or borderline state—in other words, when our objective faculties are momentarily suspended or inactive. This constitutes a mystical experience, and it thus acts as a demonstration that encourages us to study the laws pertaining to such a phenomenon. Up to this point we have examined the physical aura, psychic aura, and spiritual aura one by one. It is quite obvious, however, that no clear lines of demarcation exist between them. By that we 12

mean that they are not separated, but that they blend together to form a single radiation which gradually spreads out around the body. When this combination is perceived as a whole, the impression is usually that of an oval halo whose color and luminosity vary according to the state of health, psychological condition, and evolution of the individual concerned. For this reason, the aura is a precious source of information to the person capable of seeing and interpreting it. In the Practical Application of this monograph, you will find an illustration showing the shape of the aura as it appears to the psychic sight. It is interesting to learn that in the temples of ancient Egypt, and later in the sanctuaries of ancient Greece, candidates in the mysteries were subjected to an examination of their aura before being pronounced worthy to receive an initiation. This test took place in an adjoining chamber in the presence of a certain number of initiates. The ceiling of this room usually included a rectangular opening that allowed sunlight to filter in as an even haze. Each candidate for initiation was placed in this luminous haze which, because of its vibratory nature and the angle of its entrance through the ceiling, facilitated the perception of the aura, in much the same way that dust particles which are always present in the air become much more apparent in a shaft of sunlight. Depending upon the color perceived in the aura, the candidate was either admitted or refused entrance to the initiation. In certain cases, the refusal was final; in others, the candidates were asked to appear at another time, for their physical or psychological state revealed a temporary weakness that was incompatible with the ritual. Since we have just been speaking of ancient initiation rites, we should mention that one of the most significant of these rites consisted of the candidates entering into a state of projection in such a way that they would be fully conscious of the experience. To accomplish this, the candidates underwent a special preparation that encouraged them to extend themselves gradually and thus to experience a separation between the physical and psychic bodies. While in this state of projection, they would perceive impressions from the spiritual world and would acquire the inner certainty that they were, indeed, dual beings. Upon being integrated into the earthly state once more, they were convinced that death did not exist, but only constituted, in fact, a transition of the soul. From that time on, these candidates were considered to be true initiates and were instructed in the highest mystical teachings. In return for these teachings they were required to assume certain duties, not only to the mystical community of 13

which they were members, but also toward humanity. Centuries have passed, but the ultimate goal of initiation remains the same: consciously experiencing our own duality. You now know the method to follow in realizing this experience. Now your responsibility is to initiate yourself to the divine reality that slumbers within you. During the next few days, we suggest that you once again perform the experiment found in the Second Atrium Degree monograph, No. 12, in which you learned to perceive the aura surrounding your hands. In next week’s monograph we will explain how to proceed in extending this perception to your entire body. With best wishes for Peace Profound, Sincerely and fraternally, YOUR CLASS MASTER

Summary of This Monograph After carefully reading this monograph, read the following summary. It contains the major principles on which you are to reflect and meditate in the coming days. If any of the points are difficult to understand, refer to the explanations given in this monograph. Moreover, we advise you to read this summary again immediately before your next sanctum period.

The human aura is a combination of radiations emanating continuously from the physical body, psychic body, and spiritual body. In our teachings we prefer to designate the spiritual body by the word “soul.” The physical aura is an emanation of spirit energy. To those who are able to perceive it, it appears around the body as a luminous band 1–2 centimeters (½–¾ inch) wide. The psychic aura is closely linked to the Vital Life Force permeating every cell of our being. It is generally perceived as a luminous haze extending approximately 50 centimeters (20 inches) beyond the body. The spiritual aura corresponds to the radiations of our soul. It may extend for several meters (yards) and become intensely luminous. Even though it is composed of three successive emanations, the human aura forms a single radiation which gradually spreads out around the physical body. This radiation is generally perceived as an oval halo whose color and luminosity vary according to the state of health, psychological condition, and evolution of the person concerned. In the temples of ancient Egypt and ancient Greece, candidates in the mysteries were subjected to an examination of their aura before being pronounced worthy to receive an initiation.

NOTES

17

Seventh Degree No. 13 CONCURRENCE Even though the definition of the aura given in the following quotation may be rather vague, if not possibly erroneous, this passage from Les couleurs-le corps et l’esprit (Colors–the body and spirit) does point out certain phenomena associated with its radiation. In particular, the authors’ statement that “ . . . the impression it produces is more important than its color” is completely correct. As it eliminates vibrations it does not need, the body is constantly freeing energy, either through sudden explosions or in regular waves, and the whole of these freed energies or etheric field is called “the aura.” Our feelings color the aura. There will at times be the unconscious need to try out a color: we are then attracted to certain clothing, to a particular food, or to a person who radiates this vibration. In a more advanced stage of evolution, a person who needs a certain energy can produce its color in his or her own aura. People who overload one chakra more than another will tend to produce the corresponding color in their aura. However, the aura’s color as a whole undergoes variations depending on one’s mood at that moment, the surrounding place and persons. When someone approaches us, an exchange takes place much like that of an electrical storm, which explodes at the moment the two auras blend. While revealing what we are, the aura is sensitive to the environment. As a matter of fact, the impression it produces is more important than its color. We, ourselves, constitute the substance of the aura. It is supple when we are strong and more rigid when we are tense. Since the aura is the result of various vibratory energies released by the body, it will be pale or intense depending upon the situation. The aura is a field of varying attractions. We attract what we deserve among the vibrations of the surrounding world, planets, and the universe. Certain individuals possess a special radiance which does not go unnoticed, wherever they may be, and to which people around them and the Cosmos are sensitive. —ANNIE WILSON & LILLA BEK (twentieth century)

Dear Fratres and Sorores, In our last monograph, we explained that the human aura is an electromagnetic field which is the result of the combined radiations of the physical body, psychic body, and spiritual body—the latter of which we prefer to call the soul in our teachings, since this word conforms more fully to our traditional terminology. Today we will continue with the study of this subject and we will provide two experiments that you will want to carry out over the course of the next few days. EXPERIMENT: The object of the first experiment is to help you in seeing your own aura by means of a method used in the research laboratories of our Order. This procedure requires a simple apparatus, but one which is most effective in producing the desired effect. It consists of creating a violet background in your Sanctum or in the room you have chosen for conducting the experiment. To accomplish this, you will need to obtain a small violetcolored spotlight, which you will then place as shown in the illustration of this week’s Practical Application. In other words, place the spotlight behind you and directed not toward you, but toward the wall which is at your back. This wall will thus act as your screen. If you are unable to procure this spotlight—or until such time that you can do so—a lighted candle may be used instead. The effect will be less conclusive, but it will allow you to obtain satisfactory results nonetheless. You are probably wondering about the usefulness of such an arrangement. It must be admitted, in fact, that the aura is a phenomenon which one can perceive only after having acquired sufficient psychic development, unless, as we have already stated, one possesses the rare gift of clairvoyance. As you know, violet is the seventh and last color of the solar spectrum, the first being red. In other words, violet is located on the borderline between visible and invisible light, between “material” and “immaterial.” In projecting a violet background onto the wall behind you, you are creating an interference which lowers the vibratory frequency of your aura and allows it to be perceived by your psychic sight, even if that sight is still lacking in sensitivity. We also suggest that you place a bowl of water on your sanctum altar. For the purposes of this experiment, it is not necessary that the bowl be transparent. Even though we may not be objectively aware of it, water exerts an alchemical influence 19

on the atmosphere and its natural evaporation creates a condition favorable to the perception of extrasensory phenomena. After you have arranged your Sanctum as instructed, turn on your spotlight and proceed as follows: After extinguishing the two sanctum candles, seat yourself before your mirror, with your hands placed on your thighs and feet flat on the floor, slightly separated. Close your eyes and relax completely. Then energize your body using the method described in the experiment in the Second Atrium Degree monograph, No. 7. In other words, concentrate on each part of your body, beginning with your feet and finishing with your head. Take a series of deep positive breaths all during this concentration exercise. As soon as your body has been sufficiently energized, open your eyes and calmly look at the reflection of your silhouette in the sanctum mirror. Then intone the vowel sound EHR seven times on the note that is most natural to you. Draw out the sound as long as possible, in this way: “EEHRRRRR.” If possible, roll the R sound, as it serves to accentuate the color which predominates in your aura at any given time. As you are intoning the vowel sound EHR, concentrate your gaze on the reflection of your head and shoulders. This concentration must be total, inducing complete relaxation. Avoid blinking unnecessarily, as you are attempting to subdue your physical sight so that your psychic sight may predominate. Do not be concerned if your vision becomes cloudy or slightly hazy, as it will not affect the perception of your aura. At the conclusion of this concentration period, take note of the color that you perceived in your aura and of any other impressions that may have been experienced. If this experiment is successful, you will discern the contour of your aura, for it will gradually take shape against the violet background. It is impossible for us to predict what its dimension will be, for this depends on your physical, psychic, and spiritual state at that moment. Ideally, you will distinguish a single predominant color that will be most intense around your head and shoulders. As you will remember, this intensity is caused by the activity of the corresponding psychic 20

Rosicrucian Order

AMORC

Degree 7

Initiate Section Number 13

centers. It is also possible that you may not see or sense any particular color, but that you will receive various impressions, some of which may seem to have no connection with the phenomenon of the aura. Whatever your results, record them in your study notebook so that you may refer to them later. When your psychic centers have become sufficiently awakened, you will no longer need to use a colored background when perceiving your aura, nor will you need to extinguish the candles on the sanctum altar. Moreover, the use of the vowel sound EHR will become optional as the electromagnetic field emanating from your body will be sufficiently dynamic and regular, and thus you will no longer need to energize your psychic body beforehand. In fact, it should be mentioned that the apparatus and procedure we have just given you are simply to bring together, at this stage of your Rosicrucian studies, the best possible circumstances for perceiving your aura’s radiation. With time and practice, however, this radiation will be readily apparent to you using only your sanctum mirror. This experiment will help you to perceive your own aura. However, it is just as interesting to learn how to perceive the auras of others, and, in fact, this is certainly a goal you will want to attain. Nevertheless, we must emphasize that such a goal, in comparison to your responsibilities on the philosophical plane, should remain of secondary importance. Your primary responsibility as a member of a traditional initiatic Order, such as the Ancient Mystical Order Rosae Crucis, is to put into practice the mystical principles that you are learning. Thus, your main concern is not the acquisition of paranormal powers, but rather the acquisition of knowledge and wisdom. Such powers, in general, are cosmically granted to us when we have attained the necessary degree of evolution and when we have gained a sufficient understanding of the laws concerned. At that time we will naturally develop the faculties that will allow us to put these laws into practice, and thus we should not attach an undue importance to such abilities. Often one can hear people claiming that they can “read” auras with as much ease and accuracy as they can with the pages of a book. You will surely agree that they are displaying little humility when making such a claim. Furthermore, these people frequently exaggerate any gifts they may possess, or else they are victims of their own imagination. In extreme cases, they mistake their desires for reality and they choose this route for flattering their ego and making themselves appear important. 21

Let us remind you once again that the aura is a vibratory phenomenon which makes no impression on our objective sight. The only way to perceive it is by activating our psychic vision. There are indeed individuals who are particularly sensitive to the vibrations emanating from both living beings and objects. Yet only rarely do they speak about this sensitivity, and they exercise great care in interpreting the impressions they receive. EXPERIMENT: Let us now proceed with the second of today’s experiments. In contrast to the first experiment, the goal of this will be to perceive the auras of other people. Therefore, the next time you have occasion to attend a public meeting or a ceremony of some sort, single out a person who is near you. Then proceed in the following manner, while remaining as unobtrusive as possible. Whether you are standing or sitting, inhale deeply and positively several times so as to stimulate your psychic body. Once this is done, resume your normal breathing. If the person you have chosen is facing you, concentrate your gaze on the middle of his or her forehead. If this person’s back is turned, your gaze must be directed to the corresponding place on the back of his or her head. While calmly maintaining your concentration, mentally intone the vowel sound THA thus: “TTHHAAAA.” As noted before, avoid blinking your eyes too much. It is important, in fact, that you rely as little as possible on your objective sight. And again, do not be too concerned if your vision becomes somewhat cloudy or hazy. This physiological reaction often contributes to awakening the psychic vision. As you mentally intone the sound THA, pay particular attention to the predominant color that you perceive around the person’s head and shoulders, and note any impressions that come to you. Contrary to what one might think, the most difficult part of this experiment is focusing your concentration on the person you have chosen. It is important, in fact, that this concentration be passive. In other words, it should never be tense or rigid. As stated before, your primary concern is simply to contemplate the outline of the person’s head, with the forehead or corresponding part of the skull serving merely as a point of visual reference. In effect, you must gaze at this

person as though you were attempting to look right through him or her to see the background beyond. It is difficult to explain to you exactly what to do, as words are so limited, but we are confident that you will sense inwardly how to proceed so as to obtain the best results. Having said this, if you have not perceived the aura of your subject after seven mental intonations of the sound THA, end the experiment and wait for some other occasion when you may do it once again. The comments that we made concerning the first experiment also apply to the second. Thus, when your psychic sensitivity is sufficiently awakened, you will perceive the auras of other people quite naturally, without any special preparation. You will no longer need to condition yourself by breathing deeply and positively, nor will you need to intone mentally the sound THA, as your inner vision will be sufficiently active. There remains one point, however, to which we must draw your attention. It is true that lighting plays a key role in the perception of auras. If a strong light, such as daylight, is playing upon the features of the person you are gazing at, you will experience more difficulty in discerning the aura’s contour and its predominating color. In fact, this experiment is best carried out in a room where the lighting is subdued or where the background is relatively dark, violet being the ideal color for this purpose. If at all possible, perform these two experiments before your next sanctum period, as our next monograph will be devoted to the color spectrum of the aura and to the significance these colors may assume for each individual.

Unless one possesses the gift of clairvoyance, the aura is a phenomenon which one can perceive only after having acquired sufficient psychic development. A violet background facilitates the perception of the aura, as this color creates an interference which lowers the aura’s vibratory frequency and allows it to be perceived by psychic sight, even when that sight is lacking in sensitivity. Water exerts an alchemical influence on the atmosphere and its natural evaporation creates a condition favorable to the perception of extrasensory phenomena. In putting into practice the mystical principles we are learning, our main concern should not be the acquisition of paranormal powers, but rather the acquisition of knowledge and wisdom. Such powers, in general, are cosmically granted to us when we have attained the necessary degree of evolution and when we have gained a sufficient understanding of the laws concerned. Lighting plays a key role in the perception of auras. It is much more difficult to discern the contour and predominant color of the aura in bright light than in more subdued lighting.

Seventh Degree No. 14 CONCURRENCE The following quotations are taken from a book entitled Agni Yoga written by Helena Roerich. Her husband, Nicholas Roerich, represented our Order in Tibet for several years. Each of these excerpts deal with the perception of the human aura and emphasize certain fundamental points, notably that this perception requires the proper material and spiritual conditions. If you understand that a passionate and altruistic thought can change an aura and attract the energy which causes the shoulder centers to radiate, then you know one of the great mysteries of the world. Each visible effect is the reflection of a reaction of substance. Whereas irritation is a generator of Imperil (a physical poisoning resulting from irritation) all fervent and generous thoughts create a beneficial emanation. That this is a “Beatitude” is an absolute reality. It is engendered by the heart and reaches the cortical system to which all paths of conscious sensibility lead. *** Anyone who is able to observe human auras may witness the vivid play of the emanations of light. Upon the principle of this cosmic flux is based the plan of rational action. Each evidence of atrophy relates to the substances of darkness. There, where are waves of light; there, where the vital sparks interplay—there is Our Ray. *** Try at will to see parts of your own aura. This is impossible, as the law of psychic energy, besides your wishes, needs suitable conditions. Such conditions do not rise spontaneously, they have to be accumulated on the ground of higher influences. But the path towards higher influences is also not easy, as they receive access into the open gates. Each deviation from communion with the hearths of the finest energies closes the gates. Besides that, one has to understand wherein consists the fruitfulness of this communion. It depends not only on the pressure of striving, but also on the careful consideration of surrounding conditions. (continued on page 34) 26

Dear Fratres and Sorores, Today’s monograph will be devoted to a study of the colors making up the spectrum of the human aura. These colors have been defined by the Masters of our tradition and confirmed by experiments conducted in the Order’s research laboratories. The colors of this spectrum and their significance are confidential. In other words, you must not divulge them to anyone outside our Order or to members who have not yet attained this degree. This rule, in fact, applies to all the teachings that are provided as part of your Rosicrucian affiliation. Disregarding this confidence constitutes a violation of the conditions of your membership and will result in a karmic debt that must be eventually paid. COLORS OF THE AURA: According to the Rosicrucian teachings, the aura spectrum is composed of a sequence of eighteen colors between and including black and white. It thus differs from the solar spectrum, in that the latter comprises only seven colors beginning with red and ending with violet. Each of the aura spectrum’s eighteen colors reflects a general condition, either predominantly negative or predominantly positive, relating to our health, personality, and inner evolution. We have waited until this moment to present these colors and to indicate their significance, because we did not wish to bias the results that you obtained from the two experiments in last week’s monograph. The time has now arrived to describe them one by one and to allow you to reach your own conclusions. Black: (Very Negative)

A person who hates humanity and who deliberately serves evil.

Grey: (Very Negative)

A person who is repugnant, thoroughly malicious, and immoral.

Dark Purple: (Very Negative)

A person who indulges in black magic and the most negative of occult practices.

Dark Red-Brown: (Very Negative)

A person who is superstitious, little evolved, and crude in behavior.

Dark Red: (Very Negative)

A person who is unstable and aggressive; one who is dominated by sensual pleasures.

Dark Blue: (Negative)

A person who is hypocritical and untrustworthy; one who generally has no sense of honor. 27

Dark Green: (Negative)

A person who is malevolent and unsociable. This color may also indicate illness or poor health.

Ocher: (Negative)

A person who is materialistic, contemptuous, and egotistical, being wholly preoccupied with selfish interests. This color may also indicate illness or poor health.

Dark Yellow: (Negative)

A person who is jealous and envious; one driven by the desire to possess. This color may also indicate illness or poor health.

Dark Pink: (Negative)

A person who is opportunistic; an avid seeker after worldly power.

Orange: (Positive)

A person who is enthusiastic and animated by a great joy for life.

Light Red: (Positive)

A person who is dynamic, intuitive, and kind.

Light Pink: (Positive)

A person who is affectionate and gentle; one who is attracted to the arts.

Light Yellow: (Positive)

A person who is sociable and generous; one who is interested in spiritual things.

Light Green: (Very Positive)

A person who possesses a deep love and respect for nature.

Light Blue: (Very Positive)

A person who is inwardly evolved and possesses great psychic sensitivity.

Light Violet: (Very Positive)

A person who is highly evolved and deeply engaged in a mystical or spiritual path.

White: (Very Positive)

A person who has attained a state of perfection or is close to this state; one who is motivated by a profound love for humanity. This aura is found only in Masters.

You have undoubtedly noticed that the colors of the aura are dual in their expression, in that most of them appear to our psychic sight as being either dark, usually dull and drab, or as 28

being light, often especially luminous. These two opposing aspects correspond to either negative or positive personalities, and in some instances to their extremes. You will want to have a complete understanding of these colors as they constitute the key to the perception of auras. We also need to point out that each of these colors, with the exception of black and white, may be slightly influenced by another color and thus appear as an intermediate hue, making accurate interpretation difficult. When this happens, you should not base your judgment on this intermediary color, but instead try to analyze the impression you received at the first moment of perception. It is important to distinguish between the colors that are perceived in auras and those that are observed on the material plane. Since they do not correspond to identical vibratory phenomena, they do not necessarily have the same significance. Thus, black, grey, dark purple, dark red-brown, dark red, dark blue, dark green, ocher, dark yellow, and dark pink have no negative characteristics whatsoever when they are seen in our everyday material environment. Moreover, a person who is fond of these colors is not a malevolent person in any way. Likewise, orange, light red, light pink, light yellow, light green, light blue, light violet, and white are not fundamentally positive by nature, nor should a person who appreciates these colors be considered necessarily benevolent or highly evolved. It is a fact that material colors exert an influence on our physical, psychic, and spiritual being. However, the nature of this influence can be quite difficult to pinpoint, for it usually varies according to each individual’s personality and temperament and the person’s physical and psychological state at any given moment. For example, red has a stimulating effect that can benefit us subconsciously when we are feeling tired. On the other hand, this color can be annoying when we desire inner peace and tranquillity. Violet is conducive to introspection for a person in good health, but it will accentuate the feelings of instability being experienced by someone in a state of depression. We suggest therefore that you observe your own reactions to different colors and determine which of them you find stimulating, relaxing, revitalizing, etc. This study should furnish you with some interesting experiences. Many books and articles have been written about the therapeutic uses of color, but the authors’ views concerning the matter differ considerably and are sometimes even contradictory. 29

They often attempt to synthesize two subjects: the symbolic properties of color as they are popularly defined, and the curative properties assigned to them by certain ancient cultures, most notably that of the ancient Chinese. We can only enter into the realm of conjecture when we try to combine these two distinctly different subjects. For example, we often read that yellow has a stimulating effect on the solar plexus and the digestive system. The reasoning usually provided is that this color symbolized the sun and the life-giving earth to the people of many ancient civilizations. Yet this argument cannot always be justified. It is our belief, therefore, that the field of color therapy is not an exact science, but rather a method of healing which must be studied and applied with great discretion. For that reason, this form of therapy is not discussed in great detail in the Order’s official teachings. It is obvious that the aura, when seen in its totality, does not exhibit all of the eighteen colors which we identified and defined earlier in this monograph. As a general rule, a single color predominates and thus expresses the personality of the individual concerned. On the other hand, this predominating color does not remain permanent, for it changes with the passing of time. This reflects the fact that all human beings evolve physically, mentally, and spiritually in the course of their existence, and this evolution leads them toward an increasingly mystical life and a better understanding of the laws governing human destiny. Thus, a person’s aura may be predominantly red at a certain period of his or her life and then it gradually shifts toward light pink and later light yellow. It is logical to conclude therefore that the aura follows this progression from incarnation to incarnation until, at the ultimate moment, it appears the purest white, the color of mastery and perfection. As we have already indicated, great care must be taken in interpreting color in the auras of others. First of all, you must consider the possibility of error on your part. Unless one possesses a highly developed psychic sensitivity, one’s perception of auras is not infallible. It is always possible to make mistakes or to be misled by preconceived ideas that may be favorable or unfavorable to the person involved. Secondly, even the most mystically inclined person can fall prey to fatigue, annoyance, or irritation for a short time. When this happens, the vibrations emanating from the person will indicate the state at that moment, but they will not necessarily reveal his or her fundamental personality. 30

If the person is angry, for instance, dark red will sometimes predominate around the head and shoulders. This momentary predominance does not mean, however, that this person is negative or undeveloped. Likewise, dark green, ocher, and dark yellow should not always be associated with a malevolent personality, for these colors are sometimes indicative of illness and poor health. As a matter of fact, whenever you try to perceive the aura of another, you should not be motivated by the desire to judge, but by a wish to exercise and strengthen your psychic sensitivity. So let us stress once again that you should trust the overall impression you receive when contacting the aura of another person rather than just relying on the color which may appear in those radiations. Our next monograph will be devoted to examining two methods of diagnosis using the psychic impressions we receive when in contact with a person who is suffering from an illness. Depending upon the nature of these impressions, we will outline for you the appropriate type of treatment to use according to the Rosicrucian therapeutic method. Practical Application “Whatsoever thou resolvest to do, do it quickly. Defer not till the evening what the morning may accomplish.”—Unto Thee I Grant

In this monograph we touched briefly upon the symbolism of colors. This is a field which merits a much fuller study on your part, for it is closely linked to certain fundamental principles that are important to mystics. Therefore, when you have the opportunity, we suggest that you consult various reference books to learn what has been written regarding such symbolism. You will find that, generally speaking, there is very little variation from one tradition to the next, a fact which indicates the existence of a Primordial Tradition from which all initiates have drawn their inspiration. You will also notice that most of the colors which are mentioned have a dual interpretation. For instance, the color red, depending upon whether it is light or dark, bright or dull, has either a positive or a negative significance. In the first instance, it is thought to be the color of life and represents the Divine Fire that is thought to be the essence of the human soul. In the second, it is often associated with death and symbolizes the fires of Hell. As we have explained to you in this monograph, most of the colors of the aura can manifest either in their light aspect, which is often quite luminous, or in their dark aspect, which is usually drab. Although we should take pains in not confusing them with the colors we see on the material plane, there exists nevertheless a connection between the interpretation and symbolism of the two. Such a connection confirms the concept of “As above, so below.” In other words, it illustrates well the Law of Correspondence operating between the various levels of Cosmic Creation.

According to the Rosicrucian teachings, the aura spectrum is composed of a sequence of eighteen colors between and including black and white. Great care must be taken in interpreting color in the auras of others, for it is always possible to make mistakes or to be misled by preconceived ideas. In most cases it is best to rely on the overall impression you receive when contacting the aura of another.

33

Concurrence (continued) Sometimes, the transitory time of silence is the best accumulator. The consciousness according to the degree of straight-knowledge, gives the understanding of what action corresponds to necessity. From the compound parts of developed auras, it is especially difficult to see the saturated green color and the noble ruby color. Two contrasts: emerald and ruby. The first is synthesis and the second selfsacrifice of attainment. In misty manifestations both may meet, but to see them pure, is as rare as are synthesis and attainment. Emerald is nearer to the chalice and ruby to the Eye of Brahma. —HELENA ROERICH (1879–1955)
