The makuh ceremo ny is performed before the melasp as ceremony. Makuh means to become strong. Part of the offerin g will be colored red, black and wh ite (referred to as tri datu) to give str ength to the new house. Some Balin ese will draw three small lines (red, black and white) in every co rner of their hous e to maintain this “s trength.”

Melaspas means an act of cleansing. The ma in purpose of a melaspas ceremo ny is to clean the energy of the ne w house in hope s

that the homeow ners will be able to enjoy their sta y for the rest of their life. Melaspas not on ly cleans the energy of a new house but also shows gratitude to nature for what it provides. Woo d, stone, clay, sand and glass ar e all materials taken from nature, and without them it would not be po ssible to build a house.

In Bali, the melasp as ceremony is conducted not only for new houses but also fo r other kinds of buildings such as temples, offices/ workspaces, ware houses and animal cages. A Balinese priest must first be cons ulted in order to find out the best date to conduct the ceremony an d what offerings must be prepared . This specific date is calculated through Balinese astrology, and the ceremony is led by a Balinese pr iest. It usually take s at least one day, but it depends on how big the cere mony is.

Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases.
