TEAMTALK

SPREAD THE LOVE ‘Om Swastiastu...’

If it’s romance you’re after, Bali is definitely the place to be. Tantalizing wine and dine options abound, not to mention the awe-inducing sunsets and opportunity to walk down the beach hand-in-hand while enveloped by the sultry sea breeze. The spas on the island will also have special couple’s packages available – if you’re curious, all you need to do is ask! We won’t be going into these packages in detail, simply because this year we’re opting to discuss ways to spread the love in general.

COVER Courtesy of the Pan Pacific Bali Nirwana Resort

Instead of just celebrating with a significant other, we hope you take advantage of this ‘month of love’ to share your warm and fuzzy feelings with friends, family, those less fortunate, and also the environment. For example, to spend some time with a mother, sister or “bff” turn to INVITE & INDULGE to read about Karma Spa’s facials and Wellness Cuisine – it’s great for a day of female bonding (with a view!). And if you care about the environment, flip to PROFILE & PORTRAIT to read our interview with the young ladies behind ‘Bye Bye Plastic Bags.’ By supporting them, you’ll be showing your love and appreciation for this magical island. We also have articles related to the wet season, as there’s no denying we’re in the thick of it! All this and more in this month’s issue. We hope you enjoy flipping through it, and we hope that once you put it down you go out there and share your positivity with the world.

‘Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om…’ The Team

H

ere’s a little guide for all you ladies out there who are thinking of treating your loved ones to a romantic tropical getaway in Bali. To help with your planning (and to make sure he actually

likes what you’ve planned!), ask yourself: does your man fall into any one of these five categories?

STAY For this type of man you can never go wrong with the Bulgari Hotels & Resorts Bali. Located right atop the cliffs of Uluwatu,

Share this refreshing jug at Sundara Restaurant

this super luxurious resort has everything that your Mr. Bond will need – great cocktails, fine wine, fine dining, and handsome furnishings. However, be careful! He might not want to leave. www.bulgarihotels.com

ACTIVITIES One word: golf! Head up to the Bali Handara Golf & Country Club Resort in the highlands of Bedugul where the two of you can tee off surrounded by crater lakes and an equatorial rain forest. Another great option is the iconic Nirwana Bali Golf Club – not only it is right by the ocean, it also boasts views of the famous Tanah Lot temple. www. balihandaracountryclub.com, www.panpacific.com

This is the guy who always manages to maintain a perfectly coiffed look straight out of a men’s magazine. When on vacation, he loves to enjoy the finer things in life. STAY You should really consider the Double-Six Hotel – sitting in the heart of Seminyak right by the famed Double Six beach, this hotel will be perfect for him, especially with its large rooftop bar with a shark tank and a silent cinema perfect for enjoying an action movie. www.double-six.com

THE MAN’S MAN This type will carry your bags and defend your honor, but would probably rather swallow durian skin than have a spa day. If your significant other is a bruiser who just wants to see his favorite sports team win the game, how can you create a romantic tropical getaway that he won’t ever forget?

ACTIVITIES Bali is never short of things to do for rough rogues like your man. The island has so many adrenaline-pumping activities that you might get a headache trying to pick just one. Don’t miss out on tandem paragliding along the southern coast of the island with the Bali Paragliders Club. This is a surefire way to make your getaway together an unforgettable one! www.baliparagliders.com

EAT & DRINK The way to your man’s heart? Through his stomach of course, with a perfectly cooked steak. Take him to the unpretentious EatWell in Seminyak, which can get really crowded at certain hours so make sure you schedule your time right. As for drinks, a bottle of cold brew should do him just fine and there’s no better place to enjoy one than at Old Man’s in Canggu. facebook.com/ eatwell.baliqualitymeats facebook.com/oldmansbali

Behind the bar, check out Goldfarb’s collection of hard-to-find spirits and bitters from around the globe, not to mention an almost prehistoric (but fabulous) record player and vinyl LPs playing anything from David Bowie to slinky jazz. MI: We have lived on this island our whole lives; 14 and 12 years is enough to notice the changes Bali is going through – bad and good. The rubbish caught our attention and it saddened us to see our paradise of a home become the opposite. At the time we were also learning about significant people (Lady Diana, Martin Luther King Jr., Nelson Mandela, etc.) and we wanted to be like them. Surely you’ve watched the film “Transformers” right? Then you may recognize the face of actor Travis van Winkle who appeared in that film. He, along with movie producer Stuart Acher, Charles Michael Davis, and Tomek Kosalka traveled to Bali recently and stayed at The edge villa, Bali. We were lucky enough to have the chance to meet them over afternoon tea, below are some highlights!

Travis Travis loves The edge so much that he decided one day he wants to have his wedding there. The problem is he doesn’t even have a girlfriend yet (any takers?). He thought it would be a good idea to meet with a Balinese priest for some clues as to when he might get married. Charles Charles wears a Balinese bracelet called tri datu, given to him recently by Ketut Liyer the Balinese priest in the book “Eat Pray Love.” Stuart Stuart’s introduction to Bali was through the movie “Eat Pray Love” starring Julia Roberts. SOUL-STIRRING “My first love is people and life,” says photographer Michael Johnsey. His mesmerizing collection of black and white photography shows ordinary people leading ordinary lives, but you can sense the awe he feels as he captures these moments of labor, rest, play and prayer. His photography may be in black and white, but his past is quite a colorful one. Having grown up in post-war England, Johnsey spent his teen years in clubs watching the likes of Cream, The Who, The Stones and Elton John perform before they were famous. He also worked as one of London’s top stylists during the era of Mary Quant and Twiggy. When Johnsey served as Fashion Director and Principal of a top beauty school in Knightsbridge, it was there that he met his beautiful Indonesian wife, and shortly after they moved to Indonesia. Having taken time to formally study photography in his 40’s, he now to captures images in Indonesia with emotion and soul. It can be best described as honest photography. Johnsey has exhibited in the UK, Asia and as far away as Morocco, and you can visit his current exhibition at Bridges in Ubud (it has recently been extended until the end of June 2015). Through his work, Johnsey supports The Safe Childhoods Foundation, an NGO combating crimes against children. www.michaeljohnsey.co.uk

Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
