TO-DIE-FOR OCTOPUS The BBQ Octopus at the Cuca Restaurant has a texture unlike any octopus we’ve ever had before (we didn’t know it was possible for it to not be rubbery!). The tender octopus meat is served with a beautiful Asian gazpacho, ga fresh apple slices, cauliflower and sweet corn. And it’s just jus one of the many fantastic tapas-style dishes being served by this new player in the Jimbaran area. t’s the New Year, and although I’m not prone to making New Year’s resolutions, I do like to take this time to reflect on my experiences throughout the

COLORS OF PARADISE For our first FOTOFOLIO of 2014, we are featuring a selection of watercolor paintings from the solo exhibition “Surviving the Dry” by Balinese artist I Wayan Wirawan. These paintings were inspired by the contrast between the arid highlands around the coastal areas of North and East Bali that Wirawan discovered during an art-led journey. The exhibition is both a witness to the remarkable spirit of the coastal communities, as well as a criticism of the fact that surviving the dry is no longer about surviving arid conditions but about the survival of the soul that is worn out and deprived of nature due to modern day developments. Their chuckles clearly showed that the Mentawai people are friends. It was a warm sight to behold after the rather unpleasant ten-hour trip across the Mentawai Strait from Bungus Port in the middle of the night. The wooden boat had been forced to transport in excess of its capacity, to the extent that I had had to walk tiptoe to the toilet, zigzagging between the many boat passengers lying on the floor. My arrival here was not without reason; the literature and photographs of this jungle tribe had courted me. Even though it would only be four nights, at least I would be able to wander and experience it all firsthand. ROYAL CARNIVAL From December 5 to 8, Jakarta saw its first ever World Royal Heritage Festival. This event was held to promote and preserve artistic heritage and royal palace culture, as well as to build relationships among kingdoms around the world. The festival concluded with a carnival circling the National Monument (Monas) led by Jakarta’s Governor Joko Widodo and his deputy Basuki Tjahaja Purnama. Following them were 169 royal representatives from Indonesia as well as 11 royals from overseas countries including Japan, the UK, Norway, South Africa and Malaysia to name a few.

For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases.
