usic is one of the primary requirements in Balinese spiritual and

A traditional music ensemble from Java and Bali, gamelan is predominantly made up of percussive instruments. Gamelan comes from “gamel”, a Javanese word that refers to a type of mallet to hit instruments or the act of hitting with a mallet. A gamelan consists of metallophones, which is a musical instrument consisting of tuned metal bars that produce sounds when hit with a mallet.

WHEN THE FUN GOES WRONG

Sure, it’s great to spend good times with close friends but really, when traveling, we all have our own agendas that often will be at odds with the rest of the group. And you will soon discover that you are on the ‘outer’ as you become, what I believe is called “a wet blanket.” In today’s world of mass ‘group travel‘, millions seem to find comfort being crammed onto cruise ships with six thousand other souls being told what to do for the entire duration of the trip. The same applies to coach journeys with the courier ferrying his passengers hither and thither to galleries, museums, and other places of supposed interest. Each and every minute of the trip is meticulously planned, which is why I guess they refer to these types of vacations as ‘packaged holidays.’ My somewhat cynical views on group travel are

By the end of the trip, many of us had murder most foul on our minds and sat in separate seats on the way home, if only to avoid having to talk to lifelong friends who we hoped we would never have to see again. Consequently, I like to travel alone or with just one companion. Check in’s at airports and hotels are simpler, schedules are more flexible, arguments are easily resolved, and splitting the bill in a restaurant doesn’t’ require a member of the World Bank to work out who ate what and settle the bill! But… If you happen to find yourself on a cruise, a coach trip, or on a ‘group’ holiday, these are a few things you can do to be far from the madding crowd: • Shore excursions. • Skip the ‘organized’ outing and find a local driver to visit places you want to see. • Ditto with coach holidays. • Seek out one or two like-minded companions and stick with them. • Try and avoid eating in large groups at restaurants as the food might be great but calculating the bill can cause severe indigestion. • A group of six or more can be the same as herding cats. Take charge! • Ban couples that argue a lot. • Setting some ground rules before departure will probably go a long way towards making your group holiday a far more enjoyable experience and help retain those friends once the journey is over. „ By Paul V. Atma Jaya Catholic University proudly launched a comic book containing folklore stories from South Sorong in Papua, witnessed by Culture and Education Minister Anies Baswedan. This comic book was conceived out of the concern of the lecturers who realized there were no references about South Sorong for their students to study. Students majoring in Program Pendidikan Jarak Jauh (Long Distance Education Program) and Pendidikan Guru Sekolah Dasar (Education for Elementary School Teachers) were given the task of gathering folklore stories from Sorong – the lecturers then contributed by turning these stories into a comic book. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases.
