TEAMTALK

PARTY HEARTY ‘Om Swastiastu...’ In this issue we’re discussing some of our favorite places to party on the island! Whether it’s the kind of party that has us dancing all night with our hands in the air or a dinner party where we sit at elegantly decorated tables enjoying great food and conversation, we love them all. As we researched our favorite places, we noticed a trend in terms of location. Not only are many places in this issue located in Seminyak, but they also happen to be on Petitenget Street. We suppose this shouldn’t come as a surprise, as Petitenget has quickly emerged as one of the best places to find delicious cocktails, exquisite dinners or pumping parties that are fun without being too “messy”. In DINE & DELIGHTS, we’re excited to share with you our fantastic dining experience at Mejekawi, the newest concept offered at icon KUDETA. We also have an article on Hu’u, which has been instrumental to Bali’s party scene for almost 12 years now. You’ll also find an interview with Martin East, a renowned DJ and music producer who is now Bali-based and acts as music guru for Rock Bar. Don’t forget to flip to this month’s FOTOFOLIO for a glimpse of the amazing concerts thrown at Potato Head Beach Club over the past few years. In BEYOND BALI, read about our contributor’s experience at the Gili Islands, which he says is fast becoming the “Ibiza of the South Seas”. Party on, party people! By all means let loose while you’re here in paradise, and of course remember to stay safe! ‘Om Shanti Shanti Shanti Om…’ The Team

ERRATA - We’d like to apologize for some errors in our August 2013 issue. In NEW & NEWS the figures for AYANA’s new MICE facilities were incorrect; turn to this issue to see the correct figures. Also, in SEE & SEEN, the photo used for the B2B Travel Show was actually taken at the Grand Inna Kuta Hotel. We apologize to all parties for any confusion this may have caused.

BRAND NEW MICE OPTIONS In our August 2013 issue we shared news of AYANA Resort & Spa’s brand new MICE facilities – perfect for everything from private VIP meetings to large-scale exhibitions. Our favorite new addition is the Hibiscus Classroom, which actually holds 150 people (and not 80, as was previously published). This campus-style tiered auditorium with audio-visual facilities and plush, high-backed chairs is quite unique and unlike most MICE facilities available in Bali. AYANA has also renovated its grand ballroom; it can be divided into three separate areas and holds up to 900 guests, which is almost double its previous capacity. to represent romance and comedy tinged with sensuality. If a Joged Bumbung dancer comes to you and hands you her shawl, it means you are being chosen to be a pengibing (the one who joins her to dance on the stage). It is considered rude to reject this invitation to dance, so you must take up the dancer’s offer and enjoy your moment with her. For Joged Bumbung dancers, there are specific movements that must be mastered. However, when it comes to audience members who are chosen by the performers to dance along with them, there are no rules at all. The pengibing must simply move to the rhythm and enjoy their interaction with the dancers on stage. This audience participation and the freedom of the participants is perhaps how around 1999 the dance evolved to become more suggestive. Many consider the movements displayed during the dances these days to be quite vulgar, which has stirred up a good deal of controversy. However, despite the differing opinions and points of view, Joged Bumbung still has a place in the hearts of many Balinese.

BRINGING ‘TAKSU’ TO JOGED BUMBUNG For Balinese dancers, talent and training are two crucial things in achieving taksu in dancing. Taksu is a condition in which a dancer is able to bring facial expression, specific motions and rhythmic

NC ERS. OUR FAVORITE CLASS-ACT THIRST QUENCH

DINE&DELIGHTS

BUBBLE GUM SOUR To kick off this cocktail trip, we offer you the Bubble Gum Sour. Inspired by a childhood memory of constantly chewing and popping bubble gum, WOOBAR’s mixologist concocted this drink from a unique blend of ingredients; W Bali’s homemade bubble gum Beluga vodka and syrup, freshly pressed lemon juice and orange bitters. The refreshing cocktail is served short over ice and topped with a skewered piece of bubble gum. As you sip this drink, the sour, sweet and bitter flavors will do a dance on your taste buds! We believe this girly drink would be perfect for catching up with friends, preferably poolside and with enormous sunglasses on.

EXTRA DRY MARTINI Shaken or stirred, the choice is yours. We don’t really care, as long as it comes with an olive. The Extra Dry Martini created by Javier De Las Muelas of Barcelona’s renowned Dry Martini Bar is truly the perfect cocktail to sip after sunset. Served in a chilled cocktail glass, the mixture of dry vermouth and Bombay Sapphire gin is meticulously prepared, down to the seconds it is stirred (15 seconds to be exact). With a twist of lemon perfumed at precisely 15 cm from the cocktail, the drink offers a dry but well-defined taste with a delicate aroma. Drinking this rather strong cocktail at the masculine and classy Sundara (at Four Seasons Resort Jimbaran Bay), you might feel a tad like the double-O agent himself. If you’re lucky enough, you might even meet your own Bond girl.

BLACK STRIPE Now if you feel more like James Dean than James Bond, we recommend this unique and rather cheeky cocktail. The presentation of the Black Stripe at Mama San Kitchen & Bar is inspired by the 1920s American prohibition era. Served in a glass flask covered in brown paper, it will surely make you feel like a rebel without a cause. Made with Mama San’s homemade ginger beer mixed with rum, the gingery flavor followed by the mild sweetness and punch from the rum will have you feeling warm and fired up for the rest of the evening. At first you might think you need a second round, but take it easy there, cowboy! You might think differently once you’re halfway through the second flask. Then again, when you’re a renegade, there really is no such thing as one too many when it comes to alcohol.

MEXICAN SKY Looking to spice things up during your stay on this Island of Gods? We recommend the Mexican Sky cocktail at Sky Bar. With chili-infused tequila that is prepared for three days mixed with fresh lime and triple sec, this cocktail is definitely a fresh, or rather a spicy, take on the well-loved margarita. Served cold in a cocktail glass, the drink comes with homemade Balinese dried chili on the rim in place of salt. Don’t worry, the initial sting on your lips will be immediately cooled down by the cold cocktail. It’s the perfect drink for gazing out at the ocean from your advantageous position at Sky Bar (at The Mulia Bali), and it goes well with their delectable selection of tapas.

CINNAMON BATYTA An exotic taste that is perfect for Bali, the Cinnamon Batyta is a signature cocktail of the pool bar at Le Méridien Bali Jimbaran. Served short over ice and garnished with two thin cinnamon sticks, you can smell the sweet and spicy aroma as you sip on it. With its woody but sweet flavor, this drink is certainly the most unique out of the bunch. At first sip it might even jolt you with its bold combination of sweet, spicy, bitter and woody flavors. However, you will soon grow accustomed to the flavor combination the more you sip on it. This drink has a certain je ne sais quois. It is wonderfully indescribable but one thing is for sure: it left us wanting another glass.

BVLGARI COCKTAIL Originally created at Bvlgari Milan in 2004, it has now become a signature cocktail of the Bvlgari Hotels and Resorts around the world. A perfect mixture of a chilled cocktail glass, the sweet taste of the tropical fruit juices and Campari blends seamlessly with the bitter flavor of gin, leaving a glistening aftertaste in your mouth. Nothing beats the feeling of sipping this gorgeous cocktail whilst enjoying the view of the sparkling blue ocean from atop the Uluwatu cliff at The Bar at Bvlgari Hotels and Resorts Bali. The drink also comes with an ice-cooled cocktail shaker with enough Bvlgari Cocktail mixture for another pour, saving you the bother of ordering another glass. How convenient! By Miko Harada

BALI&BEYOND SEPTEMBER 2013

SUPPLE SKIN I decided to try out the Debussy Facial Rejuvenation by Thermodermie because it promised a “soft lifting effect”. Consisting of four parts, the 1.5-hour session starts with a drainage process to detoxify the skin and lift impurities, and then continues with a red light treatment to boost collagen production. Next is the use of infrared for oxygenation and toning elastic fibers, and last is the use of ultrasound to rejuvenate the cells and a micro-massage to hydrate. This was unlike any facial I had ever experienced – the sensations ranged from a light tickling to some more peculiar sensations. For example, at one point it felt as if a miniature rake was being pulled across my cheeks (but this was not at all painful). After I was able to get over the initial peculiarity, I found the treatment quite relaxing and actually dozed off for a bit before the micro-massage. o be honest with you, that’s actually a hard

dripping with grease, which you could fold in half before delightedly closing your eyes, opening wide and biting in… Sorry to burst your bubble, but you won’t find any of those here. However, as they say, “When in Rome do as the Romans do!” The local party crowd also craves hot and filling food after a night out, but here in Bali the favorite happens to be porridge. Don’t knock it till you try it! Laota in Tuban is open 24 hours and their bubur really does hit the spot (I can personally attest to this). Order some cakue (sliced fried dough) and stir it in, or just munch away at the cakue sans porridge. There’s also the option of ordering something else off the menu – it’s a Chinese restaurant so you’ll find everything from black pepper prawn to beef and broccoli. A more western option is burgers. In Seminyak there’s a little place called Pit Stop that is open until the wee hours. It has limited outdoor street-side seating, but you can get your fill of potato wedges and burgers there. Another advantage is the location – if you’ve been party-hopping on Petitenget Street, it will be just a stone’s throw away. And if all else fails, you can just follow the glow of the “golden arches”. You know what I’m talking about! Bali attracts people from all over the world and as time goes on more and more restaurants and cafés pop up serving treats from around the world. For instance, I’ve overheard travelers remark in awe about the many options for Mexican food we have here, and how they can hardly find a decent place serving Mexican in their hometown. In Seminyak and Canggu there seems to be a new something being built every other day. I don’t doubt the possibility of there being many more options for late night dining in the near future. Whether it’s a new café that stays open late, a New York-style food cart, or Bali’s first gourmet food truck, you never know what kinds of new options might appear between now and the next time you’re on the island. But I’ll bet you’ll find something you like! In the meantime, happy hunting for your midnight munchies. „ By Mutia Adisoma

X2 X2 Club has a unique concept for night club entertainment. It is a multifaceted venue offering an array

BALI&BEYOND SEPTEMBER 2013

of features that you can’t find in many other clubs in Jakarta, which is perhaps why it has become one of the most popular clubs in town. The club has four different areas, each designated to a particular genre of music. It also boasts a live entertainment venue, production facility, dance floors, laser lights, state-of-the-art sound systems, wine cellars and a restaurant offering delicious international and local cuisine. Exclusive events featuring some of the worlds most influential DJs are another ingredient to their success. It’s a place to see and be seen, a place where fashionable and cosmopolitan crowds flock to. It is no wonder this club is frequented by international top models and entertainers. X2 (Main Club) plays host to progressive and trance DJs and an ever-evolving roster of up-and-coming dance music artists. But for a more eclectic atmosphere, head to Equinox. It’s a venue with a more diverse selection of tunes, ranging from soul, latin, house, hip-hop and R&B. The patrons of this club are mostly young trendsetters who thrive on newness and love to mingle and drink. Third in the club complex is Diagonale, open from lunchtime to the early hours of the morning, by which time the mood has kicked into another realm. The tunes are an alluring mix of soft ambient and dance-inspiring. It’s the best of house music brought to you by their resident and guest DJs. Diagonale also serves up a great selection of drinks, from classic cocktails to vintage champagne. Lastly there’s Ego Ultra Lounge, catering to an affluent, high-end VIP clientele. Patrons have access to a full bar of premium spirits, exquisite wines, the finest magnums of champagne and a supreme cocktail menu elegantly presented and served by a knowledgeable and friendly staff. This particular club is a place where you can sip the finest modern cocktails at candle-lit tables or on cushioned sofas, but if you feel so compelled to get up and move, the dance floor is also available. DRAGONFLY In 2007 the Dragonfly night club underwent renovations and the restaurant section has since been replaced with multiple bars. The sleek new interior features illuminated wood blocks and oriental elements. It feels much more spacious since the restaurant has been taken out, however there is hardly any dance floor. Booking a table in advance is strongly recommended; otherwise you might not have much room to dance. This upscale club is known as the place where socialites and the crème de la crème of Jakarta come to gather. Celebrities, models and actresses are not a rare sight at this club. All in all it’s a place for excellent music and an attractive crowd, with of course the prices to match. „ Dragonfly Graha BIP, Jalan Gatot Subroto No. 23, Jakarta (021) 520-6789 By Devishanty

Call an ambulance by dialing 118, but it is a lot more practical and quicker to hire a taxi. Most hotels have on-call doctors on standby. For “Bali Belly”, Lomotil and Imodium eliminate symptoms, but not gastro-related infections. A fever along with symptoms requires doctor-prescribed antibiotics. Drink as much liquid as possible. Isotonic drinks under various brand names are widely available and are known to replenish body hydration and replace fluids. For discomfort, diarrhea and cramping, drink strong, hot tea; avoid fruits and spicy foods. Some day-biting mosquitoes carry dengue fever, but this is not a problem in tourist areas. Bali is non-malarial and prophylaxis is not required. Mosquito bites, cuts or abrasions easily become infected in the tropics. Treat them immediately. Drink only bottled or boiled water. Peel fruit before eating; avoid raw vegetables except at reputable restaurants. Ice in restaurants is safe. Protect yourself from the intense equatorial sun. Use high SPF sunblock and a hat. AIDS and sexually transmitted diseases are increasing in Indonesia. Local sex workers have multiple partners from around the world. They are not checked for sexually transmitted diseases. Act responsibly and use condoms, available over the counter at pharmacies.
