The change in season brings a chance to update your accessories, and pearls make a wonderful launch pad for your creativity. You can fnd them in all sorts of shapes, colors, and price points. k Bead TalWorldMags.net Two beaders, two ways: Choosing a clasp “Design is in the details.”

“Versatility means wearability.” – Kelsey Lawler

– Dana Meredith While some may be in the “form follows function” camp, I’m all about the decorative options of a toggle clasp. (Plus, I find it easier to fasten a toggle than manipulate the tiny lever of a lobster clasp!) While I appreciate the security a lobster clasp offers, I prefer to choose a closure that enhances the design aesthetic of the piece, especially when it will be worn by someone with short hair.

Ever have a necklace that should be perfect with a particular outfit, but it’s either too long or too short? I hate it when that happens! To nip this fashion frustration in the bud, I finish with a lobster claw clasp and chain extender. Not only do lobster claws offer adjustability, letting you share jewelry between ensembles and between friends, but they’re also secure and dependable.

Inspiration corner Ten years ago, Parkinson’s disease forced DIANA CHERVINKO to give up the sewing and needlework she loved: Fabric, patterns, and pins were too diffcult for her to handle. Then she discovered beading. It started with a necklace she bought that wasn’t working, so she took it apart — and that one necklace became dozens! Though pearls are her birthstone, she never really appreciated them. But these pearls languishing in her supply box beckoned, and she was determined to fnish a project. Though knotting is a huge challenge, once she started and added the rondelles, this 58-in. (1.47 m) beauty really took shape. “I had already strung and restrung those pearls several times. By adding the knotting, I felt like I was honoring the pearls. And the pearls responded.” She hadn’t imagined that beading was something she could do. “It’s the fnishing that is most diffcult. Handling the tools. Sometimes projects get set aside until I am physically able to cope with whatever’s needed.” Fortunately, Diana’s humor and positive approach keep her smiling. Her philosophy? “As much creativity can go into coping with each health twist as goes into creating a piece of jewelry.” Contact Diana at charmedbaublesandbeads@ gmail.com or visit charmedbaublesnbeads.etsy.com.

Knotting know-how

Trend to try

Colored pearls When you think of pearls, you might envision pretty and proper designs. But you can spice up your wardrobe with brilliant colors — so don’t shy away from the hotter hues.

Make PARTY PEARLS!

Cynthia Ebner Lancaster, Pa. creationsbycynthia1.etsy.com weddingsbycynthia.etsy.com

When you’re knotting pearls, it’s always a challenge to hold the beads and the thread plus position the knot at the same time. Beadalon’s Knot-a-Bead tabletop tool helps you tie precise knots. Simply make an overhand knot around the tool’s retractable awl and wrap the cord around the hook to tighten the knot. Then push a button, and the knot will slip off the awl next to the bead. Suitable for braided cords, cotton, nylon, silk, and many other materials, the Knot-a-Bead can accommodate any shape beads up to 16 mm in diameter. For a video demo and retail information, visit beadalon.com.

Peridot Stretch a gemstone strand

This tiny angular charm reminds me of a precious gem. What better way to wear it than with real gemstones? Peridot was a natural choice, since green and gold look lovely together. – Kelsey Lawler

1

necklace • Open a jump ring (see Basics, p. 72). Attach a charm and close the jump ring. Cut a piece of beading wire 23–25 in. (58–64 cm). Center the charm on the wire.

Add some length to your necklace without buying two strands of gems: String affordable crystals in a matching color on each end of the strand. The crystals will sit at the back of your neck, and admirers will be none the wiser!

2

On each side of the pendant, string a spacer, an accent crystal, a spacer, and 1–2 in. (2.5–5 cm) of peridot beads. Repeat three or four times. End with a spacer, an accent crystal, and a spacer.

3

On one end of the wire, string: 1–2 in. (2.5–5 cm) of green crystals, crimp bead, accent crystal, Wire Guardian, lobster claw clasp. Go back through the last few beads strung and tighten the wire. Crimp the crimp bead (Basics) and trim the excess wire.

4

Repeat step 3 on the other end, substituting a 1-in. (2.5 cm) chain for the clasp. On a head pin, string a peridot bead and make the first half of a wrapped loop (Basics). Attach the end link of chain and complete the wraps.

Sapphire Keep it simple, practice, and have fun — that’s my jewelry-making motto. This little bracelet fts the bill with easy stringing. The ombré sapphire briolettes paired with deep blue lapis rondelles make something simple extra special. – Mindy Greenville

1

bracelet • Cut a 13–15-in. (33–38 cm) piece of beading wire. On the wire, string 2–2½ in. (5–6.4 cm) of 5 mm briolettes, nestling the beads together. Center the briolettes on the wire.

2

On each end of the wire, string rondelles until the bracelet is within 1 in. (2.5 cm) of the finished length. Check the fit and add or remove beads if necessary.

3

On one end of the wire, string a crimp bead and a lobster claw clasp. Go back through the crimp bead and tighten the wire. Crimp the crimp bead (see Basics, p. 72). Use chainnose pliers to close a crimp cover over the crimp.

Cut an 8-in. (20 cm) piece of 20-gauge craft wire. Leaving a 1-in. (2.5 cm) tail on one end, cross the ends of the wire to form a loop. Place the loop over the frame’s loops with the 1-in. tail on top.

WorldMags.net

On a bench block, hammer both sides of the frame, taking care not to over-hammer the bends from step 4.

Wrap the 1-in. (2.5 cm) wire two or three times up around the base of the frame’s loops. Wrap the long wire down around the top of the frame until you’ve wrapped about a 1 ⁄4-in. (6 mm) section. Trim and tuck the excess wire.

WorldMags.net

Cluster tip

9

To make a dangle: Cut a 9-in. (23 cm) piece of 22- or 24-gauge wire. String a briolette and make a set of wraps above it (see Basics, p. 72). Make the first half of a wrapped loop (Basics).

10

11

12

To make a bead cluster: Cut a 12-in. (30 cm) piece of 26- or 28-gauge wire. On one side of the frame, about 1 ⁄2 in. (1.3 cm) from the bottom point, wrap one end of the wire two or three times around the frame. Trim and tuck the excess tail wire.

Attach the dangle to the bottom of the frame and complete the wraps. Extend the wraps over the top of the briolette as desired.

Working toward the bottom point, string a few 3–4 mm (small) pearls and spacers. Wrap the wire once or twice around the frame. Working up the opposite side of the frame, string an equal number of pearls and spacers. Wrap the wire once or twice around the frame.

What you’ll need

14

String one or two small pearls and spacers, a 6 mm pearl, and one or two small pearls and spacers (Cluster tip, above). Wrap the wire two or three times around the opposite side of the frame. Trim and tuck the excess wire.

Depending how far up the frame your bead cluster goes, you might need more or fewer small pearls and spacers in step 14. Just make sure the beads span the width of the frame without any gaps.

13

Working from side to side, repeat step 12 two or three times to attach additional small pearls and spacers, filling in the frame. End by wrapping the wire once or twice around the frame near the top of the cluster. Do not trim and excess wire.

Cluster pearls for a celebratory jewelry set by Cynthia Ebner

Trend to try

Party

PEARLS

I had a shirt that needed a necklace, and a single strand of pearls looked too plain. So I started wiring the pearls to chain — just the look my top needed! Since then, I’ve made custom pearl necklaces in a variety of color combinations. The necklaces range from just a few pearls to very full clusters with 130 pearls. Varying the size and number of pearls makes each necklace either big and bold or petite and refined. The end result is always a lot of fun and goes with any outfit, from casual to elegant.

necklace • To make a pearl unit: On a head pin, string a pearl. Make a plain loop (see Basics, p. 72). Make one 16 mm unit, eight to ten 14 mm units, 13 to 19 12 mm units, 25 to 31 10 mm units, 33 to 39 8 mm units, and 23 to 29 6 mm units.

2

Cut a 17–20-in. (43–51 cm) piece of chain with an odd number of links. Open the loop of the 16 mm pearl unit (Basics). Attach the 16 mm unit to the center link of chain. Close the loop.

3

On each side, about 1 in. (2.5 cm) from the 16 mm unit, attach a 14 mm unit. Continue attaching pearl units at 1-in. (2.5 cm) intervals, in descending sizes, until you’ve attached a 12 mm, 10 mm, 8 mm, and 6 mm on each side of the 16 mm. This is the beaded section.

6

Check the fit, and add or remove chain links from each end if necessary. On one end link of chain, attach a 6 mm pearl unit.

4

Starting at the center of the necklace, in between the two 14 mm units, attach three to five pearl units of different sizes to each link of chain until the cluster is the desired fullness. (Note: The center cluster shown here has 38 pearl units, but you can add more or fewer as desired.)

5

Staying within the beaded section, work outward from the center and continue attaching units of different sizes to the chain. Taper the sizes of units as you go, attaching more 8 mm and 6 mm units on each end of the beaded section.

7

Open a jump ring (Basics). On the other end of the necklace, attach an end link of chain and a lobster claw clasp. Close the jump ring.

3 Finish as in steps 6 and 7 of the necklace.

2 1 bracelet • Make 30 to 50 6–12 mm assorted pearl units as in step 1 of the necklace. Cut a 6–8-in. (15–20 cm) piece of chain.

On one end of chain, skip a few links and attach a pearl unit. Continue attaching one to three pearl units to each link until the bracelet is within 1 in. (2.5 cm) of the finished length.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN using an agate burnisher

An

ideal

setting

Make easy jewelry with a filigree bezel finding ◆ by Irina Miech Filigree bezels work beautifully as connectors, pendants, and ring settings. Choose a pearl, crystal, or cabochon that’s the same size or about 1 millimeter smaller than your setting. Opt for a piece that isn’t too domed; it needs to be fat enough that the prongs can fold over it.

What you’ll need ring ◆ 14 mm round mabe pearl, rivoli, or round cabochon ◆ 14 mm round filigree ring bezel ◆ agate burnisher, wooden utensil, or nylon-jaw pliers

1

ring • Place a mabe pearl in a ring bezel. Using the wooden end of an agate burnisher, a wooden utensil, or nylon-jaw pliers, firmly press the prongs inward at the 12, 6, 3, and 9 o’clock positions.

Supplies available from Eclectica, 262.641.0910, eclecticabeads.com. Check your local bead store for supplies. To find the nearest store, visit beadshopfinder.com.

Irina Miech Irina Miech is an artist, teacher, and author. She also oversees her two retail stores, Eclectica and The Bead Studio, in Brookfield, Wis., where she teaches classes in beading, wirework, and metal clay. Contact Irina at [email protected] or visit eclecticabeads.com.

2

Continue firmly pressing the remaining prongs inward around the entire perimeter of the ring bezel.

Tip

3

Using the agate portion of the burnisher, smooth the tips of the prongs down over the pearl. ✳

Be careful when smoothing the prongs inward, pressing firmly only on the metal to avoid scratching or breaking the pearl.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN interconnecting strands | mixing bead shapes

Rosecolored romance Weave a pretty pearl necklace by Clare Pearson

I like to play with forms and colors until something hits me, rather than be terribly conceptual. But for this necklace, I was inspired to create an intricate interplay of colors and shapes by the thorny tangles of wild dog roses growing in a park nearby. The woodsy quality of the rhodochrosite sticks plays well with the delicate Biwa stick pearls and potato pearls — a nice balance of elemental nature and soft femininity.

WorldMags.net

WorldMags.net necklace • Cut two 21 ⁄2 –4-in. (6.4–10 cm) pieces of chain. Open a 4 mm jump ring (see Basics, p. 72) and attach an end link of one chain and a 6 mm soldered jump ring. Close the jump ring.

1

2

Cut a 17-in. (43 cm) piece of beading wire. String one or two spacers, a crimp bead, and a Wire Guardian. String the soldered jump ring from step 1. Go back through the beads just strung and tighten the wire. Make a flattened crimp or folded crimp (Basics). Trim the excess wire.

3

4

5

String a bead over two of the wires to connect the strands. On each wire, string several more beads.

6

8

9

On each wire, string about 1 in. (2.5 cm) of beads as desired.

7

Continue stringing beads as desired until the beaded section is 91 ⁄2 in. (24.1 cm), connecting the wires at 1–2-in. (2.5–5 cm) intervals. Connect alternating wires so all three strands crisscross.

10

On each end of the necklace, use a jump ring to attach an end link of chain and half of a clasp.

On each wire, string one or two spacers, a crimp bead, and a Wire Guardian. Over all three wires, string a soldered jump ring. Go back through the beads just strung and tighten the wire. Crimp each crimp bead and trim the excess wire. Close a crimp cover over each crimp.

Repeat step 2 with two more wires. Close a crimp cover over each crimp.

On one of the wires from step 5 and the remaining wire, string a bead to connect the strands.

Use a 4 mm jump ring to attach the soldered ring and an end link of the remaining chain. Check the fit and trim chain if necessary.

Mix it up

Around the bend

When choosing beads, look for colors and shapes that blend well together yet have enough contrast to add visual interest.

Make decisions about where to intersect the strands by curving the necklace as you work to mimic the shape it will take when worn.

Costume jewels Pearls and crystals capture vintage glam by Monica Lueder Whenever I browse local antique shops, my first stop is always the jewelry. There’s typically fine jewelry locked in a glass display, but I go for the wildly vibrant costume jewelry that’s heaped on top of the counter. While fine jewelry is meant to be an investment, costume jewelry is simply for fun and fashionable accessorizing. I decided to make my own vintage-inspired piece by mixing pearls and crystals in warm peach and champagne tones. This necklace has a sort of old-school glamour that’s sure to get noticed!

Presentation is everything Build your brand with personalized packaging ◆ by Lorelei Eurto “You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” Everyone loves to receive a pretty package in the mail, and that first look builds anticipation for what’s inside. Increase your chances of repeat business with packaging that makes your customers feel special and supports your brand’s aesthetic. Promote your brand

Kristina Henning’s vintage florals

Pretty and practical Ideally, your packaging should always be both sturdy and stylish, especially when you’re selling a personal adornment like jewelry. It’s possible to achieve both with just a little extra time and attention. First and foremost: Always make sure your jewelry is appropriately packaged to 38

avoid damage in the shipping process. Pack your jewelry inside a hard-sided box with cotton inserts, recycled crinkled paper, or padding to keep the jewelry from moving around. Place that box in a larger box or bubble mailer to prevent further damage. You can always dress up the outer packaging with inexpensive rubber stamps or stickers.

Your packaging should reflect your style or brand just as much as your jewelry does. Jewelry designer Kristina Henning of Kande Jewelry (kande.etsy.com or kristinahenning.com) creates jewelry that mixes both vintage and modern elements. “My packaging reflects my brand — it’s ‘handmade’ in that I create the images for the packaging using a mix of vintage florals paired with contemporary design. It’s a reflection of things that I personally love — just like my jewelry.” Kristina includes her vintage postcards — with a complete listing of all her website links on the back — in addition to a handwritten note with every order. She believes this is the most important part of putting together a package for mailing. When shipping earrings, Kristina attaches them to a business card, wraps them in tissue paper, and adorns them with personalized logo stickers. Kristina orders her printed

for her jewelry designs. She sends postcards and business cards with every order, believing that it’s important to include as many pieces of contact material as possible. She suggests using Paper Mart (papermart.com) for packaging materials.

Make a statement Kathleen Klik of Modern Nature Studio (modern naturestudio.etsy.com) is also a supporter of buying local and uses as many U.S.-based suppliers as she can when packaging her contemporary, natureinspired jewelry.

Kathleen says, “I want my customers to know that I am thoughtful about the presentation of my jewelry, but also that I care about our planet.” She uses boxes and tissue paper made in the United States from recycled paper, cotton, and cardboard, along with raffia or cotton cording. She also uses recycled paper bags filled with paper pulp rather than bubble wrap, so everything is recyclable. Kathleen adds one of her business cards with a coupon code for free shipping on a future purchase in every order. She also includes

a thank-you note and adds handmade touches like a leaf-shaped tag. She admits that she spends a bit extra to achieve her goal but feels it’s definitely worth it for the packaging to be beautiful and environmentally friendly. Kathleen recommends Nashville Wraps, Uline, Vistaprint, and Moo (see Resources, below, for websites).

Tell your story

Kylie Parry’s embellished naturals

Kylie Parry of Kylie Parry Studios (kylieparry.etsy.com) creates ceramic beaded jewelry that reflects her love of nature, and her packaging does the same. “The aesthetic of packaging should complement the jewelry, which should complement the brand. All the pieces work together to tell the artist’s story.” Kylie uses simple kraft boxes that she embellishes with Japanese washi tape, baker’s twine, and stamped paper tags. She also encloses a business card for first-time buyers. “I do occasionally include a hand-written note for custom orders,” she says. Kylie recommends Minna May Design (minnamay.com) and

Yellow Owl Workshop (yellowowlworkshop.com) for unique stamps. She also recommends repurposing materials such as old greeting cards and paper scraps to make tags, or vintage book pages for wrapping paper. “I strive to use materials that can be reused, recycled, or composted,” she says. Be creative in your repurposing! If you craft a practical and beautiful package, you’ll enhance your brand and create an impression that lasts. Your customers will enjoy a memorable experience — and will continue to purchase your jewelry with confidence. ✳

a Cut a 4-in. (10 cm) piece of 22-gauge wire. On one end of the wire, make a wrapped loop (see Basics, p. 72). b On one end of the strand from step 1, string one or two spacers, a crimp bead, and the wrapped loop. Go back through the beads just strung and tighten the wire.

tube necklace • Cut six 18–24-in. (46–61 cm) pieces of beading wire. On one wire, center an 80 mm curved tube bead. On each end of the wire, string a gemstone bead, a pearl, and an 80 mm tube (see “Smart stringing,” below).

2

4

5

Follow step 3b to attach the remaining strands to the wrapped loop. Repeat steps 3 and 4 on the other side of the necklace. Check the fit, allowing 2–3 in. (5–7.6 cm) for the finishing (see “Vary the length,” below left). Add or remove beads if necessary. Crimp each crimp bead (Basics) and trim the excess wire.

On the second wire, string a 6–7 mm pearl, an 8–9 mm pearl, and a 50 mm curved tube bead. Repeat the pattern three times, then string two pearls. On the remaining wires, string beads and tubes as desired.

On one 22-gauge wire, string a cone and an accent bead. Make a wrapped loop. Repeat on the other side of the necklace. Open a 4–5 mm jump ring (Basics). On one end of the necklace, use the jump ring to attach the wrapped loop and a lobster claw clasp. Close the jump ring.

Smart stringing

Stagger colors, sizes, and textures of round beads. String one, two, or three beads depending on where the strands fall. No need to string the same pattern within a strand; just check the drape often to see how the strands complement each other.

6

On the other end, use a 4–5 mm jump ring to attach the wrapped loop and a 3-in. (7.6 cm) piece of chain. On a head pin, string a pearl. Make the first half of a wrapped loop. Attach the end link of chain and complete the wraps.

Vary the length • For a longer necklace, you can attach a longer chain extender, or use a larger cone and clasp. • You can also string more beads per strand. Try not to end all the strands with round beads, though, as they add bulk at the back of the neck. • For a much longer necklace, string an extra 50 mm tube on each end. 44

Blended blues Consult your stash for a sweet strand by Jennifer Robinson To create a necklace that blends from one color to the next, blues and greens are a natural choice. There are so many beautiful shades in between — pale aqua, teal, turquoise. I set out all the loose pearls and gemstones I had in these cool hues and arranged them from light to dark, from blue to green. I then used wrapped loops to create a continuous beaded chain. As your eye travels around the necklace, there’s something new at every turn!

Jennifer Robinson Jennifer loves working with natural gemstones and freshwater pearls. “My very favorites are tourmaline for its many colors, and keshi pearls for their unique, organic shapes,” she says. Contact Jennifer via livjewelleryhandmade.com or livjewellery.etsy.com.

Color cues If you don’t have blues and greens waiting in your stash, just choose dainty stray beads in colors that work well together. You can attach them in color-blocked sections like I did here, or alternate hues throughout for a rainbow effect.

Wrap savvy The size of your wrapped loops will increase or decrease the length of the finished necklace. My loops are rather small — about 2 mm wide. For consistent wraps, mark a spot on your roundnose pliers as a guide. If you make larger loops or use bigger beads, allow 21 ⁄2 –3 in. (6.4–7.6 cm) of wire per connector.

Petite pearl accents

by Kim Bloomberg

Classic beads lend lasting appeal to modern jewelry designs Kim Bloomberg aims for each piece she designs to fit her philosophy: “Jewelry should be elegant yet comfortable. The artful balance of modern and antique yields timeless treasure.” Pearls play a large part in Kim’s design approach. Whether incorporating them as a focal or an accent, she draws on their refined feel to breathe a charming, heirloom quality into her work. – Kelsey Lawler About me

Tips for working with pearls

I’m originally from New York but relocated to the Chicago area four years ago with my husband and our two children. I teach crafts and jewelry making in libraries and schools all over Chicago’s North Shore. Originally my grandmother’s love of jewelry motivated me to begin designing, but today I have a lot of people who continue to inspire me.

Quality makes all the difference, so use the best pearls you can find. Even if they’re not the focal, try incorporating pearls as an accent; white pearls especially brighten up a design and catch the light. Beyond white, have fun and experiment with different colors of pearls — I love champagne and pink.

My jewelry-making start

Fine finished jewelry

I started glassblowing when I was 16 years old, continued through college, and went into glass bead making. I ended up with thousands of glass beads but didn’t know how to make jewelry, so I taught myself. Glassblowing showed me that sometimes pieces don’t work out — colors might not harmonize, glass breaks, and sometimes you have to start over to get it right. It’s important to enjoy the process.

When designing, I never have a plan. I just try to combine colors, stones, and sizes so they work together in harmony. My style has evolved over the years, but I’ve always loved working with intricate components and fine chains. The end result of my work is dainty and delicate; it’s probably not evident at first glance just how much work goes into the construction. I wanted to create a collection that I would want to wear and would feel proud to see others wearing. Pearls come into play because they’re classic and have an heirloom quality. That’s what I aim for in all of my jewelry.

The appeal of pearls I have always been drawn to pearls. Pearls provide a wonderful frame to showcase colorful gemstones — they highlight, rather than distract from, the cut and color of gems. They’re also feminine, timeless, and one of the most beautiful things found in nature. Pearls also show up well on most people, especially in earrings. People with dark hair often need a “pop” of something so that earrings show up better, and pearls usually do the trick.

Advice for beginning jewelry makers Aside from having good light and excellent tools, ask questions. Seek out mentors who can help you grow. Find your own voice and make your style unique. Contact Kim at [email protected] or visit kimbloomberg.com.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

pearl knotting | using bead tips

Seasonal shades For a subtle blending, I used crystal pearls in four hues.

Tie the knot Create a classic knotted pearl necklace by Dana Meredith WorldMags.net

WorldMags.net

If you’re new to this technique, try a few knots with scrap cord and pearls first. Check the fit of your necklace often towards the end — it’s easy to add more pearls, but very tricky to undo the knots once they’re made!

1

necklace • Stretch the cord before you begin: If possible, hang it with a weight overnight. Otherwise, pull sections of the cord firmly between your hands along the entire length, stretching it as much as possible.

2

Leaving a 3-in. (7.6 cm) tail, tie an overhand knot (see Basics, p. 72). Tie a second overhand knot on top of the first knot. String a bead tip with the hook facing the knot.

3

4

Tie an overhand knot with the working cord, snugging it as close to the bead tip as possible.

5

Use a large binder clip to secure the cord tail to a work board. (This is optional but extremely helpful as it anchors one end of the cord.) String a pearl.

6

7

8

9

Slowly remove the awl while tightening the knot as close to the pearl as possible. Use your thumbnail to finish snugging the knot against the pearl.

String three pearls in different colors, tying an overhand knot between each as in steps 6 and 7. Snug each knot as close as possible to the previous pearl.

Pull the knot into the cup of the bead tip. Apply glue to the knot. Use chainnose pliers to close the cup of the bead tip. Do not trim the excess cord.

Tie a loose overhand knot with the working end of the cord. Insert a beading awl under and through the loop of the knot. Pushing with the awl, slowly move the knot next to the pearl, keeping the loop on top of the cord.

Continue stringing in the pattern from step 8 until the strand is within 1 in. (2.5 cm) of the finished length. End with a knot.

Size it up The size of the cording should be determined by the bead’s hole size. If the cord is too small, the knot will disappear into the bead. Avoid using silk cord with metal beads or crystals, as the beads’ sharp edges can cut the thread.

57

WorldMags.net What you’ll need 10

Check the fit, adding pearls if necessary. String a bead tip with the hook facing the needle end of the cord. Tie an overhand knot. Use the awl to snug the knot into the cup of the bead tip. Make a second overhand knot on top of the first. Apply glue to the knot. Close the bead tip and trim the excess cord on both ends.

11

On each end, close the hook of the bead tip. Open a jump ring (Basics). Attach half of a box clasp and the closed hook. Close the jump ring. ✳

Citrine dream

6–7 mm links 2 pairs of pliers, including chainnose microcrimping pliers diagonal wire cutters

Make your own bail with microcrimps ◆ by Irina Miech The holes in gemstone beads are often drilled too small to accommodate a jump ring, but here’s an easy work-around. To hang a gorgeous citrine pendant, I made my own “bail” out of beading wire and microcrimp beads. Design challenge solved!

Supplies from Eclectica, 262.641.0910, eclecticabeads.com. Check your local bead store for supplies. To find the nearest store, visit beadshopfinder.com.

1

necklace • Cut a 3-in. (7.6 cm) piece of beading wire. Center a leaf-shaped bead on the wire. On each end of the wire, string six microcrimp beads.

2

To make a bail: String each end of the wire in opposite directions through another microcrimp bead. Tighten the wire. Make a folded crimp (see Basics, p. 72). Trim the excess wire.

3

Open two jump rings (Basics) and attach the bail and a round link. Close the jump rings.

4

Cut two 81 ⁄2 –91 ⁄2 -in. (21.6–24.1 cm) pieces of gemstone chain. Set aside a leftover bead. Use jump rings to attach the round link and an end link of each chain.

On one side, use a jump ring to attach an end link of chain and a hook clasp. Repeat on the other side, substituting a 21 ⁄2 -in. (6.4 cm) chain extender for the clasp.

6

On a head pin, string the leftover bead from step 4 and make the first half of a wrapped loop (Basics). Attach the end link of the chain extender and complete the wraps. ✳

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN

knotting leather cord | gluing pearls

On trend

PEARLS ORBIT in

Glue pearls on leather for stellar floating-pearl jewelry by Ayla Phillips Pizzo

With only a few supplies, contemporary pearl and leather jewelry comes together seamlessly. By varying the leather color and pearl placement, you can fashion graduated multistrands, trendy cuffs, and cascading earrings. Plus this bead-andloop closure will give you adjustable-length jewelry that’s out of this world!

WorldMags.net

WorldMags.net

1

necklace • Cut a 30-in. (76 cm) piece (cord A) and two 21-in. (53 cm) pieces (cords B and C) of leather cord. On cord A, make the loop end of the closure: Fold over 61 ⁄2 in. (16.5 cm). Pinch the fold.

2

On cord A, loosely coil the short tail towards the fold three or four times.

3

4

5

Test the loop size to make sure it’s just large enough to fit around a pearl.

6

7

Trim the excess cord above the knot and the tail of cord A below the knot. Apply glue to the cord ends (see “Super gluing,” p. 68).

8

On each cord, string three to five pearls. (You will position and glue them in place later.)

9

10

11

12

String cords B and C into the set of coils.

String cords B and C through the coils. Adjust the length of B and C as desired to form graduated strands, then tighten the knot. Trim the excess cord of one of the three tails. Apply glue to the knot to secure the strands. Allow to dry.

On one of the tails, string a pearl and tie an overhand knot (see Basics, p. 72) about 1 in. (2.5 cm) from the coils. String a pearl on the remaining tail and tie a knot at a slightly longer length to make a necklace extender. Trim the excess cord and apply glue to each knot. Allow to dry.

String the tail back through the set of coils. Do not tighten the knot yet.

With one hand, pull the fold, and with the other pull cord A below the knot to tighten it.

Fold over cord A so the strand is 15–16 in. (38–41 cm) long. Loosely coil the tail toward the center of the necklace three or four times, then feed the tail back through the coils and the fold.

Lay your necklace on a piece of waxed paper. Position the pearls at least 1 in. (2.5 cm) apart, staggering their placement so they don’t touch pearls on the other strands. Move each pearl aside, apply glue to the cord, and move the pearl back in place over the glue. Apply glue next to each pearl for extra security.

WorldMags.net

www.BeadStyleMag.com

67

WorldMags.net

You can position and glue pearls to make an entire wardrobe of jewelry, including a simple lariat (above) that doubles as a wrap bracelet.

What you’ll need necklace 16 in. (41 cm) ◆◆ 12–17 8–10 mm large-hole pearls ◆◆ 6 ft. (1.83 m) leather cord, 1 mm diameter ◆◆ diagonal wire cutters ◆◆ Super New Glue ◆◆ waxed paper Kits available from Ayla’s Originals, aylasoriginals.com. Check your local bead store for supplies. To find the nearest store, visit beadshopfinder.com.

BeadStyleMag.com/videos Watch this handy video: overhand knot

Super gluing Apply glue sparingly, just a drop or two at a time. When gluing coils or securing strands, allow 2 to 3 minutes for them to dry. When gluing pearls in place on the necklace, allow 1 to 2 minutes before gluing the next pearl, and allow 2 to 3 minutes before starting the next strand. Don’t rush the gluing or drying process, or you’ll risk the strands sticking together.

autumn elegance “When I made this necklace for my October wedding, I tried not to be too literally autumnal. Since everything else at the wedding revolved around earth tones, I didn’t want a pumpkin-and-leaves palette to be part of my jewelry. This piece invokes elegance juxtaposed with the texture and variety one would see in nature. The mixed-metal focal adds a warm, rustic feel against the creamy pearls.” – Jacqueline Gelfuso Gallo, autumnhallowsdesign.com
