Philip Sparke

Philip Sparke was born in London in 1951 and studied composition, trumpet, and piano at the Royal College of Music where he gained an ARCM.lt was at the College that his interest in bands arose. He played in the College wind band and formed a brass band among the students, writing several works for both ensembles. At that time, Sparke's first published works appeared - Concert Prelude (brass band) and Gaudium (wind band). A growing interest in his music led to several commissions, his first major one being for the Centennial Brass Band Championships in New Zealand - The Land of the Long White Cloud. Further commissions followed from individual bands, various band associations, and the BBC, for whom he three times won the EBU New Music for Wind Band Competition (with Slipstream, Skyrider and Orient Expressl. Sparke has written for brass band championships in New Zealand, Switzerland, Holland, Australia, and the UK, twice for the National Finals at the Albert Hall, and his test pieces are constantly in use wherever brass bands can be found. A close association with banding in Japan led to a commission (Celebration) from and eventual recording of his music with the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra. This opened the door worldwide to his wind band music and led to several commissions, particularly from the United States. In 1996, the US Air Force Band commissioned and recorded Dance Movements, which won the prestigious Sudler Prize in 1997. Philip Sparke's conducting and adjudicating activities have taken him to most European countries, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and the USA.

Philip Sparke wurde 1951 in London geboren. Er studierte Komposition, Trompete und Klavier am Royal College of Music und wurde dort als ARCM (Associate of the Royal College of Music) ausgezeichnet. Sein Interesse an Musik fur Bandformationen geht auf diese Zeit zuruck. Er spielte im Blasorchester des Colleges, qrundete mit anderen Studenten eine Brass Band und schrieb fur beide Ensembles etliche Stucke, Gleichzeitig wurden mit Concert Prelude fur Brass Band und Gaudium fur Blasorchester erste Arbeiten von ihm ver6ffentlicht. Seine Stucke erregten zunehmend Aufmerksamkeit und dies hatte eine Reihe von Auftragskompositionen zur Foige. The Land of the long white Cloud fur die Centennial Brass Band Championships in Neuseeland war darunter das erste gr6Bere Werk. Es folgten weitere Auftragskompositionen tur verschiedene Bands, diverse Band-Zusarnrnenschlusse und die BBC, fur die er mit Slipstream, Skyrider und Orient Express dreimal den EBU New Music for Wind Band Competition gewann. Er hat fur Brass Band-Wettbewerbe in Neuseeland, der Schweiz, Holland, Australien und GroBbritannien komponiert, zweimal auch fur die landesweite Endausscheidung in der Albert Hall. Seine TeststUcke sind weltweit aus dem Brass Band-Bereich nicht wegzudenken. Die enge Zusammenarbeit mit Bands in Japan brachte ihm mit Celebration einen weiteren Kompositionsauftrag ein und fuhrte zur Einspielung seiner Musik durch das Kosei Wind Orchestra Tokyo. Dadurch 6ffneten sich seiner Musik weltweit Turen und Tore und er erhielt weitere Auftraqe, vor allem aus den USA. 1996 wurde Dance Movements von der US Airforce Band bestellt und aufgenommen. Das Werk gewann 1997 den begehrten Sudler Prize. Seine Tatiqkeit als Dirigent und Ratqeber haben ihn in die meisten europalschen Lander, nach Australien, Neuseeland, Japan und die Vereinigten Staaten gefUhrt.

The hymn tune 'Quem Pastores Laudavere' dates back to the 14th century and is widely known throughout the Christian world. Although the tune has been set to a number of different texts in different countries, it was originally a carol, celebrating the Christmas story, in particular the visit of the Angel Gabriel to the Shepherds. This simple but expressive setting presents three verses of the hymn tune, featuring first the trombones, secondly the baritones and f1ugel horns and finally the whole band.

Die Melodie des Kirchenliedes Quem Pastores Laudavere kann bis ins 14. Jahrhundert zuruckverfolqt werden und ist in der gesamten christlichen Welt wohlbekannt. Obwohl die Melodie in verschiedenen l.andern mit anderen Texten unterlegt wurde, handelte es sich ursprunqlich um ein Weihnachtslied, in dem die Weihnachtsgeschichte verkundet wird, speziell der Besuch des Engels Gabriel bei den Hirten. Dieser einfache aber ausdrucksstarke Satz besteht aus drei Strophen des Kirchenliedes. In der ersten Strophe treten die Posaunen hervor, in der zweiten die Baritone und Fluqelhorner und in der dritten schliel3lich das ganze Orchester.

La melodie de I'hymne Quem Pastores Laudavere date du Xlye siecle. Largement connue du monde chretien, elle a ete associee a differents textes dans differents pays. Mais cette hymne etait a I'origine un noel relatant un moment particulier de I'histoire de la Nativite : la visite de I'ange Gabriel aux bergers. Cette composition simple et expressive presente la rnelodie de Quem Pastores Laudavere a trois reprises. Le theme est expose dans un premier temps par Ie pupitre des trombones puis repris par les barytons et les bugles avant d'etre restitue une derniere fois par I'Orchestre de Fanfare en entier.

l.inno Quem Pastores Laudavere risale al 14° secolo ed e molto conosciuto nel mondo cristiano. Nonostante in molti paesi al motivo siano stati affiancati testi diversi, il brano originale era un canto natalizio che festeggiava questa ricorrenza ed in particolar modo la visita dell'Angelo Gabriele ai pastori. Questo adattamento, semplice ma espressivo, propone tre versi dell'inno dove appaiono dapprima seguiti dai f1icorni baritoni, dai f1icorni soprani e infine dall'intera banda.

De melodie van het gezang 'Quem Pastores Laudavere' dateert van de 14e eeuw en is bij christenen wereldwijd bekend. Hoewel de melodie in diverse landen verschillende teksten heeft gekregen, ging het van oorsprong om een kerstlied dat met name de verschijning van de engel Gabriel aan de herders bezingt. Deze eenvoudige, maar expressieve zetting bestaat uit drie coupletten van het gezang, waarbij eerst de trombones aan bod komen, vervolgens de baritons en bugels te horen zijn en uiteindelijk het hele orkest klinkt.

Philip Sparke was born in London in 1951 and studied composition, trumpet, and piano at the Royal College of Music where he gained an ARCM.lt was at the College that his interest in bands arose. He played in the College wind band and formed a brass band among the students, writing several works for both ensembles. At that time, Sparke's first published works appeared - Concert Prelude (brass band) and Gaudium (wind band). A growing interest in his music led to several commissions, his first major one being for the Centennial Brass Band Championships in New Zealand - The Land of the Long White Cloud. Further commissions followed from individual bands, various band associations, and the BBC, for whom he three times won the EBU New Music for Wind Band Competition (with Slipstream, Skyrider and Orient Express). Sparke has written for brass band championships in New Zealand, Switzerland, Holland, Australia, and the UK, twice for the National Finals at the Albert Hall, and his test pieces are constantly in use wherever brass bands can be found. A close association with banding in Japan led to a commission (Celebration) from and eventual recording of his music with the Tokyo Kosei Wind Orchestra. This opened the door worldwide to his wind band music and led to several commissions, particularly from the United States. In 1996, the US Air Force Band commissioned and recorded Dance Movements, which won the prestigious Sudler Prize in 1997. Philip Sparke's conducting and adjudicating activities have taken him to most European countries, Scandinavia, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, and the USA.

Philip Sparke wurde 1951 in London geboren. Er studierte Komposition, Trompete und Klavier am Royal College of Music und wurde dort als ARCM (Associate of the Royal College of Music) ausgezeichnet. Sein Interesse an Musik fOr Bandformationen geht auf diese Zeit zuruck. Er spielte im Blasorchester des Colleges, grundete mit anderen Studenten eine Brass Band und schrieb fUr beide Ensembles etliche Stucke, Gleichzeitig wurden mit Concert Prelude fOr Brass Band und Gaudium fOr Blasorchester erste Arbeiten von ihm ver6ffentlicht. Seine Stucke erregten zunehmend Aufmerksamkeit und dies hatte eine Reihe von Auftragskompositionen zur Folge. The Land of the long white Cloud fur die Centennial Brass Band Championships in Neuseeland war darunter das erste gr613ere Werk. Es folgten weitere Auftragskompositionen fOr verschiedene Bands, diverse Band-Zusarnrnenschlusse und die BBC, filr die er mit Slipstream, Skyrider und Orient Express dreimal den EBU New Music for Wind Band Competition gewann. Er hat fUr Brass Band-Wettbewerbe in Neuseeland, der Schweiz, Holland, Australien und Grol3britannien komponiert, zweimal auch fur die landesweite Endausscheidung in der Albert Hall. Seine Teststucke sind weltweit aus dem Brass Band-Bereich nicht wegzudenken. Die enge Zusammenarbeit mit Bands in Japan brachte ihm mit Celebration einen weiteren Kompositionsauftrag ein und fOhrte zur Einspielung seiner Musik durch das Kosei Wind Orchestra Tokyo. Dadurch 6ffneten sich seiner Musik weltweit Turen und Tore und er erhielt weitere Auftraqe, vor allem aus den USA. 1996 wurde Dance Movements von der US Airforce Band bestellt und aufgenommen. Das Werk gewann1997 den begehrten Sudler Prize. Seine Tatiqkeit als Dirigent und Ratqeber haben ihn in die meisten europalschen Lander, nach Australien, Neuseeland, Japan und die Vereinigten Staaten gefOhrt.

The hymn tune 'Quem Pastores Laudavere' dates back to the 14th century and is widely known throughout the Christian world. Although the tune has been set to a number of different texts in different countries, it was originally a carol, celebrating the Christmas story, in particular the visit of the Angel Gabriel to the Shepherds. This simple but expressive setting presents three verses of the hymn tune, featuring first the trombones, secondly the baritones and f1ugel horns and finally the whole band.

Die Melodie des in der gesamten unterlegt wurde, wird, speziell der

Kirchenliedes Quem Pastores Laudavere kann bis ins 14. Jahrhundert zurOckverfolgt werden und ist christlichen Welt wohlbekannt. Obwohl die Melodie in verschiedenen Uindern mit anderen Texten handelte es sich ursprunqlich um ein Weihnachtslied, in dem die Weihnachtsgeschichte verkOndet Besuch des Engels Gabriel bei den Hirten.

Dieser einfache aber ausdrucksstarke Satz besteht aus drei Strophen des Kirchenliedes. In der ersten Strophe treten die Posaunen hervor, in der zweiten die Baritone und FIOgelh6rner und in der dritten schlief3lich das ganze Orchester.

La melodie de I'hymne Quem Pastores Laudavere date du Xlye siecle. Largement connue du monde chretien, elle a ete associee differents textes dans differents pays. Mais cette hymne etait I'origine un noel relatant un moment particulier de I'histoire de la Nativite : la visite de range Gabriel aux bergers.

Cette composition simple et expressive presents la melcdie de Quem Pastores Laudavere trois reprises. Le theme est expose dans un premier temps par Ie pupitre des trombones puis repris par les barytons et les bugles avant d'etre restitue une derniere fois par l'Orchestre de Fanfare en entier.

l.lnno Quem Pastores Laudavere risale al 14° secolo ed molto conosciuto nel mondo cristiano. Nonostante in molti paesi al motivo siano stati affiancati testi diversl, il brano originale era un canto natalizio che festeggiava questa ricorrenza ed in particolar modo la visita dell'Angelo Gabriele ai pastori. Questo adattamento, semplice ma espressivo, propone tre versi dell'inno dove appaiono dapprima seguiti dai f1icorni baritoni, dai f1icorni soprani e infine dall'intera banda.

De melodie van het gezang 'Quem Pastores Laudavere' dateert van de 14e eeuw en is bij christenen wereldwijd bekend. Hoewel de mel odie in diverse landen verschillende teksten heeft gekregen, ging het van oorsprong om een kerstlied dat met name de verschijning van de engel Gabriel aan de herders bezingt. Deze eenvoudige, maar expressieve zetting bestaat uit drie coupletten van het gezang, waarbij eerst de trombones aan bod komen, vervolgens de baritons en bugels te horen zijn en uiteindelijk het hele orkest klinkt.
