HOW DO WE UNDERSTAND HUMAN LIFE?

SOCIAL SCIENCE AS THE STUDY OF SOCIETY • Social science refers to the systematic study of various aspects of human.; • A major category of academic disciplines dealing with society and the relationships among within a society; and • It is also occasionally used to refer specifically to the field of Sociology, the original science of society.

Social Sciences, Natural Sciences, and Humanities • Natural Science is a major branch of science that deals with the description, prediction, and understanding of natural phenomena based on observational and empirical evidences; • It includes a variety of academic disciplines which, often in combination with each other, focus on the various aspects of nature and the natural world.

Social Science versus Natural Science • Both the natural and social science use empirical and measured data evidence that can be seen and discerned by the senses. • Both sciences, the theories can be tested theoretical statement and general positions.

Social Science versus Natural Science • Both have general laws that each science apply in its numerous applications. • Some branches of each science also employ both natural and social science components. Biology and ecology of the natural sciences do this as well as economics and psychology of the social sciences.

Difference between SS and NS • Natural Sciences deals with objects, whereas social sciences with subjects, that is with human being. • Natural science is characterized by exactness, controlled by variables and predictability. Whereas, SS is completely opposite. It is spontaneous, unpredictable or uncontrollable.

Difference between SS and NS • The basis of natural science is experimental data while social sciences rely on experiential data. • With respect to experimental data, the typical method of science is doing repetitive and conventional laboratory experiments. In contrast, Social sciences, in lieu of experimental data, typically involves alternative methods of observation and interaction of people within a community.

Difference between SS and NS

• Natural Science work within a closed system while social sciences work within an open system.

HUMANITIES • Humanities refer to the study of the ways in which the human experience is processed and documented. • It encompasses the fields of philosophy, literature, religion, art, music, history and language.

HUMANITIES • Since humans have been able, we used the aforementioned fields not only to record but to understand the world. • Humanities are branches of learning that examine human constructs and concerns. It is the exploration and explanation of human experience.

HUMANITIES • The academic disciplines under humanities seek to understand and critique the human condition in all its depth and range of meaning. • Written text are enormously important in most discipline in the humanities, especially in philosophy, history, and literature.

History of Humanities • Humanities as a study can be traced back to ancient Greece. During the roman times, the concept of seven liberal arts- rhetoric and logic, grammar, music, astronomy, arithmetic, and geometry was developed. • Not until 15th century when there was a great shift to study humanities, it was considered as a subject to be studied rather than practiced.

Social Sciences VS Humanities • If humanities emerged in the 15th century, Social sciences evolved after the French revolution and the industrial revolution. • It was developed from prescriptive practices that were related to a group’s social movement, or through applied and experimental science, or methodical knowledge of bases. Karl Marx, Emile Durkheim, and Max Weber are credited for giving social science a modern definition.

Social Sciences VS Humanities • Both are concerned with human lives and human nature. • Both are concerned with human aspects such as laws, politics, linguistics, economics, and psychology. • One thing that differs each one is that, humanities involve more critical and analytical approach whereas, social science deals with more of a scientific approach

Social Sciences VS Humanities • Humanities are deemed to be Philisophical than social sciences. It is concerned with the heritage and questions like what makes us human. • Very much philosophical that it deals with philosophy, history, religion, arts, law, and even ancient languages.

Introducing the disciplines within the Social Sciences

noun

Anthropologists ask and attempt to answer the basic questions such as; • When, where and how did humans evolve? • How do people adapt to different environments? • How societies develop and change from the ancient past to present? Answering these questions can help us understand what it means to be human.

Many endeavors of the antropologists are based on three concepts through which they often describe, explain, and understand human life: society, culture, and evolution

ECONOMICS 1: a social science concerned chiefly with description and analysis of the production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services b: economic theory, principles, or practices sound economics

GEOGRAPHY Geography is the study of places and the relationships between people and their environments. Geographers explore both the physical properties of Earth's surface and the human societies spread across it.

History The discipline that studies the chronological record of events (as affecting a nation or people), based on a critical examination of source materials and usually presenting an explanation of their causes.

Linguistics The scientific study of language and its structure, including the study of morphology, syntax, phonetics, and semantics. Specific branches of linguistics include sociolinguistics, dialectology, psycholinguistics, computational linguistics, historical-comparative linguistics, and applied linguistics.

Political Science the branch of knowledge that deals with systems of government; the analysis of political activity and behavior.

Psychology The scientific study of the mind and behavior, according to the American Psychological Association. Psychology is a multifaceted discipline and includes many sub-fields of study such areas as human development, sports, health, clinical, social behavior and cognitive processes.

Sociology and Demography Sociology is a study of society, patterns of social relationships, social interaction and culture of everyday life. It is a social science that uses various methods of empirical investigation and critical analysis to develop a body of knowledge about social order, acceptance, and change or social evolution.
