Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA)
Environment Surroundings in which an organization operates including air, water, land, natural resources, flora, fauna, humans, and their interrelation
Environmental Aspect Element of an organization's activities or products or services that can interact with the environment Environmental Impact Any change to the environment whether adverse or beneficial, wholly or partially resulting from an organization's environmental aspects
What is EIA? • An Environmental Impact Assessment is an assessment of the possible positive or negative impact that a proposed project may have on the environment, together consisting of the natural, social and economic aspects.
Purpose of EIA The purpose of EIA is to: • provide information for decisionmaking on the environmental consequences of proposed actions; and • promote environmentally sound and sustainable development
EIA for Tihama • Pre-construction stage • Operational stage
Steps in doing EIA • Identification of Environmental Aspects and Impacts • Evaluation of significance • Establishment of Controls
Similar to ASPECT
EIA for Operational stage Aspects are to be identified under the following conditions: • Normal operation • Abnormal operation (start up and shutdown) • Potential Emergency Conditions
Tihama Environmental Aspects Categories • • • • • •
Aspects are identified in the following categories:Emissions to air (NOx, SO2, CO, CO2 etc) Releases to water (eg: Waste Water to Aramco, Water wash chemicals) Waste management (Types of waste – S,L,G & G,S & R, NR & B, NBD) Contamination of land (eg: Chemical spills) Use of raw materials and natural resources (NG, LO etc) Other local environmental issues (Community Complaints, Customer requirements, Government regulations)

Description Major environmental spillage and probable prosecution Serious breach of consent Technical breach, no measurable environmental harm Complaint and possible breach Possible breach of consent Complaint but no breach of consent Measurable release Not likely to lead to harm Effect too small to quantify

Description Almost certain Very likely Probable More than even chance Even chance Less than even chance Improbable Very improbable Almost impossible
Band ARisk of significant environmental impact; controls to be revised before continued operation Band B Tolerable risk; further controls to be applied if reasonably practicable Band C Acceptable risk; no further action required
Additional Controls • Identify Aspects with significant impacts as per Tihama scoring matrix • Establish additional controls to reduce the impact
