An RNC always includes an MS. The MS interconnects all other subracks in the RNC and includes all functions of an ES, as well as functions common to the RNC. Functions of the MS comprise the following: Termination of the Mur interface with OSS-RC Termination of the Iu interface with the CN Termination of the Iur interface with another RNC Termination of the Iub interface with the RBSs Distribution of broadcast information to all involved subracks Distribution of broadcast information to all involved RBSs within a subrack External transmission interfaces Attachment of synchronization sources Duplicated non-blocking cell switch Duplicated high-speed links to interconnect with the ESs Duplicated timing signals for the node Input for GPS signals Pool of processors for user plane processing and control

ES Functions • ESs has interfaces with the RBSs. The functions of an ES comprise the following: • Termination of the Iub interface with the RBSs • Distribution of broadcast information to all involved RBSs within a subrack • External transmission interfaces • Duplicated high-speed links between subracks and the MS • Duplicated non-blocking cell switch • Pool of processors for user plane processing and control

GPB BOARD

Main Processor Board. It contains and executes the main part of the RNC software. In the MS, four GPB pairs are duplicated to provide redundancy. One Active & another is standby --- other are in pool. The GPB contains a flash disk drive The GPB is equipped with Ethernet and asynchronous serial interfaces accessible from the board front panel.

SCB • Cell switch core functionality • Circuits for System Clock (19.44 MHz) distribution • Interfaces for node-internal links • Interfaces for fan supervision and control • Interfaces for GPS information • Power filtering and distribution • Over-temperature protection for subracks

TUB • Interface for external clock input (an alternative to the transmission clock) • Interface for GPS signal input • Generation of reference timing signals • Regeneration of reference timing signals • Stabilization of reference timing signals • Handling of node synchronization procedures • System Clock oscillator (19.44 MHz) • TUB is duplicated to provide redundancy.

SPB • In RNC 3820 only one type of SPB is supported: SPB3 with five processors. Each processor is loaded with one or more of the following applications: • Packet Data Router (PDR), terminates the GTP-U protocol towards the Packet CN. • Common Channel, terminates configured radio channels, for example FACH. • Dedicated Channel, terminates dynamic radio channels, for example DCH, with or without HW acceleration. • Point to multipoint - Iu, MBMS stream multicasting between subracks. • Point to multipoint - Iub, MBMS stream multicasting towards RBSs, runs with DCH application.
