2. Consider the earth dam shown in the attached page. The total height of the dam is 45 ft, with a crest width equal to 5ft, with a upstream head of 40 ft. a. Assume that the dam is isotropic with a saturated coefficient of permeability ks = 2×10-6 ft/sec, the saturated water content ϴs = 0.355, and residual water content ϴr = 0.11. b. Assume that the dam is anisotropic with the saturated permeability in the vertical direction equal to 10% the saturated permeability in the horizontal direction. Assume that saturated coefficient of permeability in the horizontal direction is ks = 2×10-6 ft/sec, the saturated water content ϴs = 0.355, and residual water content ϴr = 0.11. Solution: The problem was solved using SEEP/W. The initial condition was modelled by assuming the soil parameters with the boundary conditions and geometry shown below. Parameter Isotropic (2a) Anisotropic (2b) Units Saturated X-Conductivity 2.00E-06 2.00E-06 ft/s Saturated Water Content 0.36 0.36 Residual Water Content 0.11 0.11 Ky'/Kx' Ratio 1 0.1 -Rotation 0 0 deg Soil Type Silt Silt In the estimate volume water content Function, the estimate method that was used was the sample functions and the sample material was assumed to be silt. The geometry and the software output are attached in the succeeding pages.
