Reliable Narrator

Directions: Review the following passages from Chapter One and make inferences about the character of the narrator, Nick Carraway. Ask yourself: Will he be reliable? Why or why not?

1.

Recalling a quote from his father: “Whenever you feel like criticizing any one,” he told me, “just remember that all people in this world haven’t had the advantages that you’ve had.”

Yes- He shows an upbringing to not judging people without considering how they were raised.

No- He was raised as a privileged person, therefore he is biased from the start.

2.

“I’m inclined to reserve all judgments, a habit that has opened up many curious natures in me.”

Yes- He tells us that he is not going to be biased.

No- We won’t know the true nature of others as he sees it for fear of being biased.

3.

“Reserving judgments is a matter of infinite hope.”

Yes- By him having hope for the other characters, he will never stop observing their actions.

No- We will get a biased view of the characters, for if they are hopeless or evil, Nick will never give up on them.

4.

“Father agreed to finance me for a year, and after various delays I came East, permanently, I thought, in the spring of twenty-two.”

Yes- He has everything he needs and does not need to worry about money, so he can fully focus on his surroundings with no distractions.

No- He again shows his privileged nature and will be biased towards the upper class.

She cried and told her to tell them that she had changed her mind. The next day she acted like it had never happened.

6. Why does Gatsby want to have tea with Daisy in Nick’s house? Why doesn’t Gatsby ask Nick for this favor himself? Why did Gatsby wasn’t Daisy to see his house.

7. What does Tom do when he and Daisy return from their honeymoon?

He got into a car accident when he was with another woman.

Chapter Six Study Questions

Directions: Answer the following questions based on your readings in the novel.

 8. How truthful was Gatsby when he relayed the story of his life to Nick? Why does Fitzgerald tell the story of Jay Gatz now?

Cody taught Gatsby how to act the part of a member of the upper class. He taught him about obtaining dreams and how to be rich. Nick explains that he says this much later, but Fitzgerald might have put it here because it could get lost later.

9. Describe the meeting of Tom and Gatsby. What does this meeting reveal about them?

It is seemingly awkward, Tom has a flair of superiority and Gatsby is stuck introducing himself to man he already knows. This shows that the two men are continually striving for the alpha-male role due to Tom’s personality and Gatsby’s strive for Daisy.

 10. What is deeply ironic in Tom’s statement, “…I may be old-fashioned in my ideas, but women run around too much these days to suit me”?

It is ironic because of his affair with Myrtle.

11. What suspicions does Tom have about Gatsby? What does he vow to do?

He does not trust him because he finds him untruthful. He vows to find out what he does.

12. What did Daisy and Tom find Gatsby’s party loathsome?

Daisy does not seem to like West Egg. She likes the idea of old money and riches being evident through generations. Since West Egg is “new money”, she cannot get over the fact that it used to be a poor area and now it is acting just like they do with money.

13. How did Gatsby measure the success of his party?

He measured the success on how much Daisy liked it. Since she did not care for it, to Gatsby it was a failure.

14. What Nick told Gatsby the “you can’t repeat the past”, Gatsby replied, “Why of course you can!” Do you agree with Nick or Gatsby? Explain.

Answers will vary.

The Women of The Great Gatsby

Directions: Find descriptions of the three main women of the novel The Great Gatsby. Use information from their descriptions and their actions throughout the novel to define their character.

Daisy

Daisy is Tom’s wife and Nick’s cousin. She is also the former lover of Jay Gatsby. She is from Louisville, KY, where she met Gatsby as a young girl. Daisy is suppose to be a dream, a lovely girl with simplistic views and a constant lack of accepting things that go wrong in her life. She seems to light up the room for whoever is in it. Some would assume she is in denial of her feelings, but others would call her a tease.

Jordan is a friend of Daisy’s. She is pushed onto Nick throughout the novel, as characters try to make them a couple. Nick describes her as a “cadet”, seeming that she has a an air of superiority over others around her. As Nick spends more time with her, we find out that she is a liar and a cheater, making Nick not trust of value her.

Jordan

Myrtle

Myrtle is George Wilson’s wife and Tom Buchanan’s mistress. She is described as a busty woman who is full figured and full of life. She describes her relationship with George as a failure and explains that Tom is who she needed to be with. She was not in love until she met Tom, and George tricked her into marrying him because he presented himself as someone he is not.

In-Depth Quotations

Directions: With many characters in the novel, what they say isn’t necessarily what they mean. Take the following quotes and decipher what they really mean.

1.

“I hope she’ll be a fool—that’s the best thing a girl can be in this world, a beautiful little fool.”

- Daisy Buchanan – Chapter 1

Daisy says this quote after her daughter was born. She says this quote possibly to her own discomfort in her life, specifically her marriage. Daisy is not an unintelligent woman, but the society of the time does not value smart women, so she must act the part of the fool to fit in. She hopes her daughter will realize this too.

2.

“‘They’re such beautiful shirts,’ she sobbed, her voice muffled in the thick folds. ‘It makes me sad because I’ve never seen such - such beautiful shirts before.’”

- Daisy Buchanan – Chapter 5

Daisy says this quote after she takes a tour of Gatsby’s house. This quote takes a deeper look into Daisy’s feelings for Gatsby by noticing that he had made it and became wealthy, just like he wanted. Daisy takes this realization out on his fancy shirts and begins to cry, realizing she could potentially be with her love after years of being with Tom.

3.

“‘Can’t repeat the past?’ he said incredulously. ‘Why of course you can!’”

- Jay Gatsby to Nick Carraway– Chapter 6

Gatsby says this on the dock in front of the green light. With the light in the background, this expresses Gatsby’s undying hope and dreams for being with Daisy, just like they were before. This shows Gatsby’s character in that he will not stop until his life is just like he pictures: With Daisy, just as they were years ago.

4.

“Their eyes met, and they stared together at each other, alone in space. With an effort, she glanced down at the table. ‘You always look so cool,’ she repeated.”

- Daisy Buchanan to Jay Gatsby– Chapter 7

The text states immediately after this quote that Daisy told him that she loved him in these words. With her being in the same room with Gatsby and Tom, and her saying these words to Gatsby, it is clear to Tom that she chooses Gatsby in this moment. This sparks the rage, confusion, and misunderstanding that led to Gatsby’s demise.

Poem Analysis- Comparison to The Great Gatsby

“A Day Dream” by Emily Bronte

On a sunny brae, alone I lay

One summer afternoon;

It was the marriage-time of May

With her young lover, June.

Now, whether it were really so,

I never could be sure;

But as in fit of peevish woe,

I stretched me on the moor.

From her mother's heart, seemed loath to part

That queen of bridal charms,

But her father smiled on the fairest child

He ever held in his arms.

A thousand thousand gleaming fires

Seemed kindling in the air;

A thousand thousand silvery lyres

Resounded far and near:

The trees did wave their plumy crests,

The glad birds caroled clear;

And I, of all the wedding guests,

Was only sullen there!

Methought, the very breath I breathed

Was full of sparks divine,

And all my heather-couch was wreathed

By that celestial shine!

There was not one, but wished to shun

My aspect void of cheer;

The very grey rocks, looking on,

Asked, "What do you here?"

And, while the wide earth echoing rung

To their strange minstrelsy,

The little glittering spirits sung,

Or seemed to sing, to me.

And I could utter no reply;

In sooth, I did not know

Why I had brought a clouded eye

To greet the general glow.

"O mortal! mortal! let them die;

Let time and tears destroy,

That we may overflow the sky

With universal joy!

So, resting on a heathy bank,

I took my heart to me;

And we together sadly sank

Into a reverie.

Let grief distract the sufferer's breast,

And night obscure his way;

They hasten him to endless rest,

And everlasting day.

We thought, "When winter comes again,

Where will these bright things be?

All vanished, like a vision vain,

An unreal mockery!

To thee the world is like a tomb,

A desert's naked shore;

To us, in unimagined bloom,

It brightens more and more!

The birds that now so blithely sing,

Through deserts, frozen dry,

Poor spectres of the perished spring,

In famished troops, will fly.

And could we lift the veil, and give

One brief glimpse to thine eye,

Thou wouldst rejoice for those that live,

Because they live to die."

And why should we be glad at all?

The leaf is hardly green,

Before a token of its fall

Is on the surface seen!"

The music ceased; the noonday dream,

Like dream of night, withdrew;

But Fancy, still, will sometimes deem

Her fond creation true.
