INTERNATIONAL INSPECTION SERVICES LTD HARDNESS TESTING PROCEDURE

5.

Procedure 5.1. General 5.1.5. All hardness testing examination shall be subjected to examination under witness by client / client inspector where applicable at any reasonable time and place during fabrication and installation work. 5.1.6. The hardness testing shall be carried out by trained / experienced persons. 5.1.7. The hardness testing shall be carried out in shop as well as in field. 5.1.4 The extent of hardness test shall be as per governing code / client specification. 5.1.8. The hardness limit applies to weld and heat affected zone. Hardness tests of the heataffected zone shall be made at a point as near as practicable to the edge of weld. 5.1.9. The location of test shall be on the base metal, weld and HAZ and minimum of five readings shall be taken for each location. 5.1.10. The hardness value shall not exceed 248 HV 10 for Weld metal/HAZ and 220 HV10 for base material. 5.1.11. Hardness value shall be reported in Vickers (HV10). 5.1.12. The weld surface shall be prepared by grinding, filling and polishing with emery paper (300 grit or better) prior to hardness testing. A procedure for surface preparation shall be submitted for EPC CONTRACTOR. 5.1.13. Extent of testing shall be • A minimum of two production hardness tests shall be performed on each major circumferential weld and each major longitudinal weld. • Hardness measurement shall cover each WPS. • Hardness shall be performed after PWHT (if PWHT is applicable) 5.2. Equipment for Examination; 5.2.5. Krautkramer Microdur MIC 20 or MIC 10 Hardness Tester. 5.3. Surface Preparation 5.3.5. The surface shall feature a metallic smooth, ground surface in order to eliminate erroneous measurements brought about by coarse grinding or filing.

5.3.6. The grinding shall be carried out without using excessive force; no overheating or burning shall be permitted. 5.3.7. Care shall be taken during grinding to ensure that material thickness is not reduced below design thickness. 5.4. Measuring Method 5.4.1

Vickers penetration with indentation evaluation by the UCI method under load (dia-mond angle 136°).

5.4.2

UCI Method During a hardness test by UCI method, The Kraut Kramer Microdur MIC20 / MIC10 operate according to the UCI method (Ultrasonic Contact Impedance). This method enables quick and easy measurement: position probe and read off the value. This operational ease is achieved because the Vickers diamond indent in the material’s surface is electronically measured and instantly displayed as a hardness value without using the cumbersome optical evaluation of a microscope normally associated with Vickers hardness testing. Krautkramer MIC 20 combines the quasi-static UCI and the dynamic rebound hardness testing methods. The UCI method (Ultrasonic Contact Impedance) determines the hardness of a material on the basis of the size of the test indentation left behind in the material by a Vickers diamond after applying the test load. In the case of the rebound method, an impact body is impelled by spring force against the test surface. The impact and rebound velocities are each measured in a non-contact mode; the hardness value is calculated from these two values. The MIC 20 automatically sets to the corresponding method as soon as you connect a UCI probe or a rebound impact device.

5.5. Calibration of MIC 10/ MIC 20 Indicating Device To perform the calibration, several readings are taken on the sample and then displayed The indicative device represents a microprocessor controlled measurement acquisition system. Average value is adjusted to the actual hardness. This enables to achieve precise calibration and a calibration offset value for that specific material that can be used to recalibrate the instrument. 6. Acceptance of Component Based on Hardness Measurements: 6.1 The maximum hardness value at any point on the weld and HAZ shall not exceed 248 HV10 and 220 HV10 for base material for ferritic metals in process services, including H2 and sour service Document No. : INS/MET/HDD/001 Rev.: 01 dated 15.12.2016

conditions as per applicable project specification. 6.2

If hardness values are exceeded, the material shall be rejected. If only one hardness result exceeds the specified maximum, then a minimum of three further indentations shall be made in close proximity to that which failed such that they do not mutually interfere. If all the further tests are below the maximum specified hardness, the retest shall be accepted. 6.3 The relation between different hardness values can be found in ASTM E 140 to convert Hardenss in Brinell (HB) to Hardness in Vickers (HV). The approximate conversion is HB=0.95xHV.

7. Documentation & Reporting of results For each Hardness testing as per this Procedure, the following minimum information shall be recorded and suitably addressed in the relevant INSPEC Report (Attachment 1): -

Client Identity / Project Identity. Part number or pipe spool number. Weld identification. Name of the operator. Type of the equipment used. Date of testing. Stage of inspection.
