Let’s Go!

America’s leading early-childhood magazine is now in India!

Life Lessons In this month’s Tex and Indi™ story (pages 6 to 9), the children couldn’t get their kites up in the air. They were about to go home when a gust of wind came along. It was a kite-flying day after all. This story reminded me that children need supportive interactions with adults in order to cope with disappointments and learn patience and persistence as they try new things. And then, when children are more secure and skilled, they also need us to pull back and trust them to fly solo. I hope this month’s issue will prompt some questions of your own. Have fun talking about what occurs to both of you as you read the magazine together! Wishing that this festival season brings joy and cheer to you and your children. Sincerely,

Richa Shah, Managing Editor Email me at [email protected]

March Wind Byy Fayy Whitman Manus • Art byy Taia Morleyy

March wind, here it comes Marching in with all its drums. See it skip and whip through town, Tangled branches tumbling down. March wind, hear it shout: I’m breathing in and breathing out. And if you’re patient, then one day I’ll even blow some spring your way.

A Kite-Flying Day By Lissa Rovetch • Art by Amy Wummer

Indi had a butterfly kite. Tex had a bee kite. And Tex’s best friend, Niko, had a rocket ship kite. Niko’s mom and baby sister, Annie, and their dog, Daisy, were at the park, too. 6

Tex said, “Maybe if we hold our kites higher like this, the wind will catch them.” But that didn’t work.

“Maybe we should run really fast like this,” said Indi. But that didn’t work either.

“Maybe we just need to talk nicely to our kites,” said Niko. “Pretty please, go up in the air, little kite.” That didn’t work, but it did make everyone laugh. March 2018

7

“I think this may not be the best kiteflying day,” said Niko’s mom. “We might need to try again on a windier day.”

As they headed for home, a big gust of wind came along and sent Tex’s kite up, up, up! “Kite! Kite!” Annie said as she pointed to the kite. “Ruff! Ruff!” barked Daisy. 8

March 2018

Niko and Indi saw Tex’s kite flying high, so they quickly tried again. “Look!” said Niko. “Mine’s flying, too!” “Mine, too!” said Indi. “Thank you, Mr. Wind!” “Hooray,” cheered Niko’s mom. “I guess it was the perfect kite-flying day after all.” March 2018

Meera and Kiran

Meera was sitting on the porch waiting for Kiran to come out to play. Kiran sneaked behind her and squirted her with water from his pichkari, shouting, “Got you!” 12

March 2018

Meera jumped up and quickly dipped her pichkari in the water bucket. She had been unprepared. Seeing Meera busy, Kiran ran to hide.

First, Kiran tried hiding behind a coconut tree. But it was too skinny. “Wait until I catch you, Kiran!” Meera called.

Kiran thought Ginger’s dog house would be a good hiding place. But Ginger was already inside, taking a nap. March 2018

13

Meera was almost done filling her pichkari. “You are going to be wetter than a seahorse, Kiran!” she shouted. Kiran spied some towels that Ma kept in the garden. He crawled under them just as Meera shouted, “Get ready, Kiran!” 14

March 2018

Meera ran all over the yard looking for Kiran. But she couldn’t find him. Finally, she called out, “Where are you, Kiran?” Kiran popped out from the pile of towels with balloons in his hands and shouted, “Here I am!”

Kiran threw the balloons at Meera. Meera drenched him with the pichkari and they both shouted, “Happy Holi!” March 2018

My Green Balloon By Suzy Levinson • Art by Hannah Shaw

My green balloon was flying high When—whoops—I lost the string! It disappeared into the clouds. I couldn’t do a thing. Perhaps it soared to outer space And settled on the moon. I think I’ll build a rocket ship To fetch my green balloon.

Jay’s Favorite Button By Stacy Hart • Art by Gillian Flint

Jay and his sister, Aarti, loved pushing buttons. They usually took turns, but not today. Aarti was at school. So Jay was pushing all the buttons.

He pushed the microwave-oven buttons. 20

March 2018

He pushed the dishwasher buttons.

He tapped the elevator buttons.

He even mashed Mommy’s car-key button to unlock the car. March 2018

21

At the grocery store, Jay saw Mrs. Gupta near the big front doors. He used both hands to push the large button. “Thanks,” said Mrs. Gupta.

At their last stop, Jay ran ahead of Mommy. He stood on tiptoe and stretched his fingers long. He couldn’t reach the button. He didn’t want Mommy to help. 22

March 2018

He saw an umbrella by the door. He picked it up and poked the pointy tip against the button. Ding-dong!

Gramps opened the door and lifted Jay off the ground. “Did you ring my doorbell?” he asked. “All by myself,” Jay said with a smile. “It’s my favorite button.” March 2018
