This report provides information,

guides, techniques and applications on how to survive in an urban setting and on how to enhance your career in the busking industry.

Chapter 1: Busking as a Way of Life Busking is defined as playing music or performing entertainment at the same time to solicit money.[1] To busk is to perform in public spaces for tips.[2] Some individuals who do busking, or are termed as buskers, have CDs and other tokens such as t-shirt to accompany their performance. Interested passers-by may opt to buy their paraphernalia or accessories. It takes patience, diligence, bravery, and talent to make a

living as a busker.[3] Some make this as a getaway to express their talents, while others have made it their profession and a source of living. Busking can be seen in various perspectives. True enough that it will not make millions of dollars but it will make you a day of living. Busking is an art form that is world known by several names. Romani Gypsies brought the word busker to England by way of their travels throughout Europe. In France, they were known at Troubadors, as Mariachi’s in Mexico, Chindonya in Japan, and in old German, Minnesingers and Spielleute.[4]

Originally, busking is a major source of income for entertainers. They maximized this form of art to travel, and to search for fame and fortune. But as time passed, busking became a means for most people to hear music in the streets as buskers perform on the roads. Also, entertainers have been partnering with buskers to increase their popularity and sales. Consequently, busking has always been around from theatre publicity to street performances for many centuries today. Currently, busking has remained popular in many parts of the world. It has lived up to its original purpose of some people to search for fame and fortune. Many successful people today claimed

that they have earned their successful careers through busking. In fact there are many names in the history of the human race who begun their careers as buskers such as Benjamin Franklin, Hank Williams, Kanye West, among others. Truthfully busking has a splendid history, a priceless present and a promising future. [1]

A. Busking Tips from Veteran Street Performers Busking is always a great way to improve your performance skills. It’s a enormous experience to share your passion to fresh ears and enlightenment to those who are bored with their lives. What’s exciting about busking is that you don’t have to waste time coordinating your event but rather performing to unscheduled occasions in various places makes your chosen career more exhilarating. To help you increase your income from busking, blog.discmakers.com shares to

us the following tips gained from experienced street performers: Watch other street performers Greg Patillo, a beat boxing flautist and YouTube star said that when he was just starting, he would watch and learn from jugglers and magicians in Seattle’s Pike Place Market. He would take note on how they earn a crowd and pass a hat in an effective and efficient manner. He try his best to learn on how experienced buskers make eye contact, repertoire change depending on who’s the audience and many other techniques that can help improve his own

performance. Learning from others is an effective strategy to help you master and succeed from your chosen busking career. Know what’s legal Prepare your own homework and research which places needs permit for busking performances. A quick research on the internet will give you an idea on what’s legal and illegal in certain places. Natalie Gelmam, a singer and song writer from New York shares that in her more than 10 years in the busking industry, she only got one ticket. She further shared that generally, the cops will respect

what you’re doing as long as you’re not making too much of a crowd, and if you’re respectful of them as well. Pack light Whether you’re playing in a train station or local park, the less gear you have to lug, the better — especially if you have to relocate on the fly due to rain, law enforcement, or any other number of factors outside of your control. Pattillo prefers the ease of a completely acoustic performance, while Gelman brings a minimalist gear setup to her busking dates. “I use a small, self-contained Roland

Cube Street amp that’s powered by rechargeable batteries,” says Gelman. “I can go out at least three times on one charge, but I always carry back-up batteries as well.”[5] Experiment with times and locations Today, there’s no secret formula on where and when to perform. Continuous practice, observation, trial and error are the ways to go for a successful performance. Much of your choice when it comes to venue will depend on the character of your performance and on your personality as a performer

as well. As a flautist who prefers playing acoustically, Pattillo prefers spots that are relatively quiet, but still get a lot of foot traffic. For her part, Gelman seeks out areas frequented by tourists. “Travelers are more flexible than people who are from whatever town you’re in,” she says. “They have more free time to stop and listen and they’re more open to whatever’s coming into their world.”[6] Safety is also a concern, and Gelman recommends busking in an area that is both well-lit and provides you with a solid wall,

statue, fountain, pillar or other structure behind you. When it comes to timing, again, observing your local environment and asking around can give you an idea of when to strike. When playing classical music in San Francisco train stations, Premawardhana preferred early and late rush hours for maximum foot traffic; in New York City, Pattillo recommends between 10 AM and 2 PM in order to intercept music-friendly parents and babies, as well as the post-dinner rush when tipsy New Yorkers jump from one bar to another.[7]

Choose a diverse repertoire that you connect with Irrespective of your busking choice, ensure that this is your passion and it’s something that excites you. You have to be able to sell it to yourself before you can sell it to others. Gelman says that he connects most strongly to his own songs and people connect to that and respond in return. Gelman also advises to vary your performances according to your audience. Listen to how people are responding, know your current environment and match your music

accordingly. Patillo shares that old ladies and young kids are going to like different kinds of music, so play one type of music to draw the old lady in, and while she’s watching, play another piece of music that brings the kids in. Once you have a crowd, the crowd brings more people in, just by itself. Getting people’s attention is fantastic skill that you can learn. Find a way to grab passers-by and give you special attention to stop, listen and generously give you money. Try different selections and see what draws audience

attention. Premawardhana who is an experienced busker said that we experimented with Mozart and Beethoven classic quartet music, but that tended to not work as well for earning money as popular classical standards like Pachelbel’s Canon. If people hear something that they know and love, they’ll generally stop and put bucks in.

Bring paraphernalia Be creative and bring your paraphernalia. Post cards, a sign, a banner or anything creative can help you become known through

word of mouth, social media and many other ways. Likewise, if people take your photos and videos, the more you’ll become known via online media. Additionally, Gelman further says that putting your personality into your physical busking setup is a plus. You can use signs and tag lines such as, “take a card for good karma.’ You can have fun with it.” On the other hand, have something to sell such as your CD. Some people, most especially the tourists want to take their

experience with you at home.

Go with the flow Busking does not mean that you take yourself seriously. Understand that what you are doing is unpredictable and you get varied reactions from your audience in specific places. Most importantly, don’t focus on making money with what you do. Rather, put special attention to connecting with your audience, widening your network and spreading your name. In this way, you can generally spread your

name as a musician and a performer. Premawardhana shares that he always saw busking as both an opportunity to practice and to perform. He further said that singing or playing an instrument is like flying an airplane wherein the more flights hours you have the better. Likewise, Pattilo said that performing in the streets is a valuable experience even if you don’t earn money from it. Actual performances teach you lessons that you cannot gain through practicing by yourself.

Give, and Expect, Respect Since busking isn’t generally as regulated as a club gig, it’s important to be aware of your fellow street performers. That means showing up early to claim prime busking locations, being friendly and respectful towards others busking musicians, and standing up for yourself when you need to. “There’s a fine line between being respectful to other people and being able to push back when someone’s being a little disrespectful to you,” Pattillo says. “Set yourself up in a place where you’re not going to get in the way of other people busking.

You have to have the confidence to walk over there and ask them to please respect you.”[8] Manage fear and have fun Busking is a great way to overcome your fear. Patillo shares that the first time he went to busk in New York City was when he was 20 and today, he has 14 years of solid busking experience. However, he was still fearful that he would mess up somebody. Patillo further said that the only way to overcome fear is to just continue doing it.

On the other hand, it is must for you to know where busking is not allowed and legally forbidden. Additionally, it is equally important for you to locate tourist destinations in every country and city you visit. Observe and learn the best times when

people gather and have the time to listen to you. Remember that correct timing to perform varies across time and space. Also, take note that it is part of your goal to bring music or entertainment to people who do not have the time to see it, hence, find out the best time for you to show your skills and talents. Being strategic in the busking world allows you to earn more. Adventure travel buzz.com[10] also shares three prominent places where busking is much appreciated in the United States of America: [9]

Venice Beach Boardwalk in Los Angeles, California While the general area might have been made famous from Billy Joel’s classic “Piano Man” (which was written about his six months busking at the nearby Executive Room Bar on Wilshire Boulevard), there is much more to see other than musicians lining the boardwalk in Venice Beach. The gifted, unusual, and artistic are all celebrated along this colourful strip. This eccentric locale is for sightseers, where athletic street performers and skaters leap around, colourful works of graffiti line the ocean, and tireless entertainers demonstrate their various acts. One of the most popular gatherings for

performers and musicians is the Venice Beach Freak Show, where everything under the sun can happen.[11] [11]

The Delmar Loop in St. Louis, Missouri If your idea of busking is carrying the old American busker tradition of crooning some old-time rock-and-roll and maybe strumming a beat-up sixstring, you’ll find quite an audience in The Delmar Loop. Home of countless rock-and-roll legends such as Chuck Berry, the area has become a center of musical history for visitors. It’s not uncommon to hear the echoes of harmonicas and cigar-box guitars resonate throughout this streetcar suburb throughout the night. In 2007, the street was called one of the ten great streets of the USA by the American Planning Association. Whether you’re a tourist or

one of the main attractions, Missouri’s musical tradition is alive and well for your visit on the Loop.[12] [12]

Pike Place Market in Seattle, Washington Buskers are found everywhere throughout Seattle, but few places are so welcoming as the Pike Place Market. While the stores might deal in curios, antiques produce, and local dishes, the streets are typically filled with the sights and sounds of street performers. With buskers frequenting the area since the 60’s, it’s practically a hub for the practice. Over ten million tourists visit the market every year to take in the entertainment. From virtuoso spoon players to the firstever street band in the United States, the market continues to carry the torch for the colourful and often misunderstood art

of busking. In fact, the local Market Foundation which manages social services in the area is funded by donations made to the market’s unofficial mascot t, a life-sized bronze cast piggy bank named Rachel. With a local culture that loves everything bizarre, buskers are adored in Pike Place. While not every community embraces street performance, there are still havens such as these three destinations where buskers can make ends meet through the kindness of those who appreciate their talent, charm, and weirdness. While it may not be a job in the traditional sense, there isn’t a more unique way to travel. For those who want a truly alternative lifestyle, these

communities present a tremendous opportunity.[13] [13]

D. Finding Your Pitch Finding your pitch in the busking industry also needs lots of creativity and common sense. It’s not really necessary that you just go to places or tourist destinations. You can actually go to more solemn places for example you can go to parks and entertain couples dating and families having a picnic. You can choose to take the venue where you are performing as your motivation. Onyx Ashanti in his book, “A 21st Century Musicians Guide to Street Busking” mentions about 3 types of show categories which are the following: A. A Traffic dependent set.

This type of show depends on a steady flow of traffic. The objective is to make as many people stop as possible, put on your show, usually with frequent breaks, and attempt to convert that large number of patrons into a large number of tippers. When you draw many people quickly, they expect to be “entertained”. They are expecting something great, so ensure that you give them what they expect. Non-musical buskers usually call this a “circle-act” because the crowd is instructed to form a circle around the performers. There is usually a slow build up to

a climax then, just before the climax, you lay out your pitch money, and end the show to wild applause and adulation, then “pass the hat”. A good circle act/traffic set can net large sums of money in very short amounts of time. But the impetus is on you to have a high energy act somewhat flawlessly. It’s probably not the ideal type of beginners. The other drawback is the crowd. Crowds draw cops. Crowds draw pickpockets and jealous vendors/store owners. But if you keep your crowds contained, for example, out of the street and not blocking pedestrian

paths, AND you are somewhat aware of the business makeup you are in, you should not have too many problems.[14] B. Ambiance set. This type of set is usually in areas where you are somewhat off to yourself and the foot traffic is somewhat sporadic. You can use the “ambiance” to inspire patrons to tip you. Locations like bridges (overpasses and underpasses), transit system connecting halls, river banks, parks…anywhere where your sound can drift and can bring people to you. Many times, people like the feeling of “discovering” you, and

it can show in your tips and sales. And if you find a place that is reclusive enough, you will never have to worry about noise complaints. If you have discovered the right location, people can hear you way before they reach you, which, if they like you, will increase your chances of getting a tip/making a sale. This type of set is PERFECT for those that want to practice. You can pace yourself in a different type of way and focus on aspects of your music that need work. The drawbacks are that you really must connect with just about everyone one that passes or connect really

deeply with a few, because there aren’t that many people to begin with. You must maximize every interaction. But you will know freedom like you’ve never know, when you do. A hybrid set of both ambiance and circle. If you want to really maximize, develop the ability to play anywhere. Its more than doable to play in the subway for the (ambiance) for people going to work in the morning, which gets you warmed up, then do a lunch time set (hybrid) where you are doing a bit of a ambient set for people eating 50A 21st Century Musicians Guide to Street

Buskinglunch (captive audience), then later in the afternoon go where the tourist hang out and do a few short up-vibe touristy sets. If you’ve still got energy after that, you can always do some grooving late nightclub foot traffic sets and/or find a little bridge overpass and serenade passing couples. There is no drawback to this one because if you go to a pitch that one type doesn’t work, you can try the other, or you can go somewhere that one of the three will work. I would suggest starting with the ambient set, just to get used to busking in general, then move up

to the Hybrid set, meaning, doing the ambient set in a traffic pitch then develop a traffic/circle act more organically. I find that it is easier to go from ambient to traffic than the other way around.[15] C. Pitch Recon Recon is short for Reconnaissance, also known as scouting, is a military term for performing a preliminary survey; especially an exploratory military survey to gain, or collect information. This is especially poignant for busking. You need to develop a skill for finding a pitch that is high in profitability and low in drama. Doesn’t matter if there

are half a million tourists if you’ve got some old lady across the street calling the cops every single time you show up, or if it’s an area of rowdy young people who like to amuse themselves by tormenting buskers and vendors. You need to pay attention to multiple variables that relate to your ability to busk, stress free. I suggest going to the potential pitch without your rig, if possible. Be sure to bring your map so that you can keep note of the good pitches as well as the ones to avoid and why (this is where your smartphone starts to come in handy). Go, have a cup of coffee,

and just chill. Watch people.[16] Here are also some tips and suggestions on how you can successfully enter places and perform successfully: Never ask permission to anyone if it’s okay to perform in specific places. Most especially, never ask the police because they will always say no. Don’t perform to certain places where another busker is performing. Be respectful to others and they will do the same thing to you. The standard space you can give to other buskers is around 50100 feet from other buskers. Be mindful about your volume.

Ensure that your sound is not too loud that it disturbs the whole place. This can give you a bad reputation and may ruin you busking career. Be aware of the local ordinances of specific places. Sometimes getting information from individuals and the police is not reliable; hence, make sure that you know the laws in places where you intend to perform. Keep a small notebook where you can record unavoidable events such as if someone is harassing you while performing. All these information are needed in case you’ll have to legally complain

about the abuse. Try to carefully take photos and videos as well. Try to network with other buskers, instead of competing with them, you can just join forces and perform together sometimes. [14]

E. Dealing with the Police In your busking career, you will always come across with the police. You will always met friendly and unfriendly officers. That’s why you should learn how to deal with them. There will be times that a police officer will confront you of your activities. In order to put yourself in a right and legal position, here are some important guidelines that you should do: When you will encounter a police officer who will order you to leave, the best thing to do is not to argue with the officer anymore. If you are in the middle of your

performance and you were ordered to leave then take advantage of the situation. Politely inform your audience that you are being asked to leave, sometimes some audiences will give double of what they intended to do. Ensure that you are also armed with legal documents such as having a copy of the list of ordinances with you at all times. In this way, you can politely inform the police officer about your right to perform.

F. Dealing with Thieves Another irritating concern of buskers are the thieves. Thieves are everywhere and they can take advantage of your performance. They are always ready to take your money in split seconds; hence you should also be aware and smart. Do not leave your valuable things laying around. Ensure that you have a safe bag or box to put your valuables. If you see big bills being thrown to you, ensure to pick them up and put it in your safe bag. After your performance, you can choose to immediately put your money in the nearest ATM near you. Otherwise, put your money is a safe place always.

G. Dealing with Tramps and Beggars Tramps and beggars are not really harmful but they can ruin your day’s performances. Sometimes they’ll wait until you perform before they’ll pan handle your crowd. You can deal with tramps and beggars by politely asking them to leave. If they leave then give them some bucks.

Chapter 2: Urban Subsistence Living Without the Performance Busking as a career is not only meant for musicians, dancers, and performers. Today, many people were applying alternatives that are equally effective without the live performances. The following are skills and busking ideas that you can apply to earn a living: Searching for treasures and sell them – You can be an online and

offline seller of valuable and unique items such as antiques, rare books, and all kinds of collectibles. In this time and age, so many people from around the world make a living or sometimes make a fortune by maximizing the use of social media such as YouTube, Facebook, etc. There are actually thousands of ideas that you can do. You can share your passions and interests; you can also do some tutorials through your own website. Just be creative and you will realize that there are so many busking ideas where you can

1. Affiliate Marketing Affiliate marketing is a type of performance-based marketing in which a business rewards one or more affiliates for each visitor or customer brought by the affiliate's own marketing efforts. The industry has four core players: the merchant (also known as 'retailer' or 'brand'), the network (that contains offers for the affiliate to choose from and also takes care of the payments), the publisher (also known as 'the affiliate'), and the customer. The market has grown in complexity, resulting in the emergence of a secondary tier of players, including affiliate management agencies, superaffiliates and specialized third party

vendors. Affiliate marketing overlaps with other Internet marketing methods to some degree, because affiliates often use regular advertising methods. Those methods include organic search engine optimization (SEO), paid search engine marketing (PPC - Pay Per Click), e-mail marketing, content marketing and in some sense display advertising. On the other hand, affiliates sometimes use less orthodox techniques, such as publishing reviews of products or services offered by a partner. Affiliate marketing is commonly confused with referral marketing, as both forms of marketing use third parties to drive sales to the retailer. However,

both are distinct forms of marketing and the main difference between them is that affiliate marketing relies purely on financial motivations to drive sales while referral marketing relies on trust and personal relationships to drive sales. Affiliate marketing is frequently overlooked by advertisers. While search engines, e-mail, and website syndication capture much of the attention of online retailers, affiliate marketing carries a much lower profile. Still, affiliates continue to play a significant role in eretailers' marketing strategies.[17] You can check out amazon.com and clickbank.com for affiliate marketing
