The 21st Tokyo International Film Festival is now receiving global attention. In 2007, more than 600 films from 67 nations and regions were submitted for the competition section alone. 2008 will see the addition of a new theme, “ecology,” and the “Earth Grand Prix (Tentative)” will be awarded to one film selected from among all categories. In total more than 300 films will be shown at numerous locations in Tokyo, including Roppongi Hills and Bunkamura. Held from October 18 to 26. Advance tickets will be on sale from October 4.

OGATA Korin achieved success in creating the “Rinpa” school of painting and industrial art, a decorative art form based on traditional Japanese art. “Celebrating the 350th Anniversary of Ogata Korin’s Birth: Treasures by Rinpa Masters – Inheritance and Innovation” will be held from October 7 until November 16 at Heiseikan in the Tokyo National Museum. The KAATSU training method was invented by SATO Yoshiaki, Chairman of the Japan Kaatsu Training Society. His inspiration came at a religious ceremony some 40 years ago while listening to a Buddhist sutra and having to sit with his legs folded for a long time. His legs went numb and when he massaged them he realized the tightened calves felt similar to the way they felt after a hard physical workout.

Hirai’s interest in photography started when he took a class while studying abroad in Canada. “When I started I wasn’t set on photographing smiles, but eventually I got really into photographing just people. And I kept releasing the shutter right as the person smiled. I noticed this only after printing the photos. I also really liked giving people the photos I’d taken of them.”

The Yokota family and the families of other abductees formed the Association of the Families of Victims Kidnapped by North Korea the next month. They began to stand on streets all over the country, gathering signatures to seek the return of the victims. They also held gatherings, pleading for Megumi’s return and for help from the public. Yokota family have given more than 1,000 speeches as of 2006.

In September 2002, then Prime Minister KOIZUMI Junichiro visited North Korea and the Japan-DPRK summit meeting was held. Chairman KIM Jong-Il acknowledged the abductions for the first time and apologized. Prime Minister Koizumi protested to Kim Jong-Il strongly, urging investigations be continued, survivors retuned to Japan and an end put to abductions. The Japanese government identified 12 missing people in Japan including Megumi as abductees. Four of them and the unacknowledged SOGA Hitomi returned home to Japan in October 2002.

There are people around the world who continue voluntary grass-roots activities to return the victims to their families and protect human rights. “ReACH (Rescuing Abductees Center for Hope),” based in Washington, DC is one of them. ReACH is an NPO whose main activities include the exchange of abduction information, and the dissemination of information about street gatherings and rallies in the US and Japan on the Web. In Tokyo, participants of ReACH conduct various activities, with its website linking to other related websites on the Internet. One of the volunteers, OBARA Shigeko, says: “I have a daughter, too. I can’t just sit idly by. I would like to be of a help even if it’s a little one.”

I thought Japan had no important news, as such a minor topic made headlines. I noticed a board on which “No photographing allowed” was written at the entrance. Seeing me eager to take photos, the Italian tour guide murmured, winking at me, “You are not allowed to take pictures here. But, no one is watching you.” What a wonderful country Italy is!

CIA: What was weird? Prof.: Most Japanese graffiti is couples’ names under an umbrella. These are not scribed by elementary school children, but by Japanese adults who are supposedly quite serious. This makes me feel there is a gap between the image of the Japanese and the reality.

ome Japanese words are difficult to translate. Onomatopoeia in particular are very difficult to translate into English. For instance, “Gorogoro” in the sentence “Kaminari ga gorogoro naru” (rumbling thunder) is adopted from the sound of thunder, and English has no equivalent term. に ほん ご

Since there are no appropriate English terms, the translation is influenced by the whole sentence. Getting to the Daio Wasabi Farm itself is a little longer, but a quick and easy trip nonetheless. A taxi ride will only take about 5 minutes. But a more enjoyable way is to go by bicycle, which can be rented at the station. Bikes usually go from 200 to 250 yen per hour. Based on the average time spent at the farm, this method can also be cheaper than the round trip taxi fare and much more fun, making it easier to take in the emerald green rice fields and the surrounding Japan Alps. 1. Make about 5 cuts in the surface of the meat by inserting a sharp knife between the meat and the fat (a), and sprinkle the meat with salt and freshly ground black pepper. 2. S  prinkle the meat with flour, and shake off any excess. Dip the meat first into the beaten egg and then into the panko breadcrumbs. 3. Place the meat into oil heated to 160C. Deep fry for 7~8 minutes, turning once. Remove from oil, and drain well. 4. Place a serving of cabbage and serving of potato salad on the side of each individual serving plate. Cut the pork into bite-size pieces and place one cutlet on each plate. Dab a small amount of spicy mustard on the edge of each plate, for dipping. Drizzle tonkatsu cutlet sauce directly onto the meat, to taste.
