You can learn everything from how to hold it correctly to basic playing techniques and manners in a one-to-one lesson held at a traditional inn in Ginza, Tokyo. Classes can be attended in casual clothes and there is no need to buy a hand drum. The school offers a one-day free course. Classes are also held in Kyoto, Kobe and Fukuoka.

ews photographer OKI Morihiro first went to Kolkata (at the time Calcutta) in India in 1974, driven by fears for the future at a time when India was said to be the starting point of a global population explosion. There Oki saw firsthand the miserable reality of destroyed houses, garbage piled in the streets and people living homeless. or centuries the Japanese have used meetings called “omiai” as part of the process of arranging marriage. In a traditional omiai a go-between sets up a meeting between a prospective couple to see if they are interested in each other. Over the years, however, a new process has developed. If you do not have much time, it is recommendable to go to Tenzan Toji-kyo, a day hot spring three kilometers from Hakone-Yumoto. You can take a shuttle bus from the station.

Near Hakonemachi is a reconstruction of an Edo-period (1603~1867) checkpoint. It is through this point that rural daimyos (feudal lords) would pass in a procession when traveling to and from Edo (present-day Tokyo), and today such parades are re-enacted annually on November 3rd in HakoneYumoto. There are numerous shops that sell souvenirs including traditional crafts near the checkpoint.

ugawara is a hot-spring area facing the sea and with Hakone behind it, and is also next to the well-known hot-spring resort of Atami. It is a little more than one hour by train from Tokyo. Until December you can have fun picking mandarins, while between the middle of February and the middle of March 4,000 plum trees bloom in Makuyama Park, like a beautiful pink carpet spread over the ground. Add to this Yugawara’s warm climate, and it is no wonder that many celebrities own villas there. ゆ
