Chemicals, Interchem. All these industries produce chemical products. First two are large scale industries and another two are small scale industries. Observation: In Rastriya Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd. And Macson: Weighing machine, conveyor belt and stitching machine assembly is used for packaging. In L.D. Chemicals and Interchem : Electrical weighting machine, manual transportation and stitching machine is used. Problem Facing: Two workers to four workers are required for each packaging assembly and 24 hours requirement of worker in large scale industries like Rastriya Chemicals and Fertilizers Ltd and Machson. Minimum three workers are required for each packaging section in small and moderate scale industries like L.D. chemicals and Interchem. Idea for Solving Problem: If combination of weighing and stitching machine is possible then one worker can operate 2 to 3 machines and no continuous observation is required. It reduces time of operation and reduce material wastage. INTRODUCTION Packaging can be defined as "the science, art and technology of enclosing or protecting products for distribution, storage, sale, and use". Packaging also refers to "the process of design, evaluation, and production of packages". Packaging machines are used for packaging process. Packaging basically of two types. The single item such as water bottle can be regarded as the item that is primary packaging. Whereas a pack of bottles, shrink wrapped, would be regarded as the transport package used within the distribution chain is known as "secondary" packaging. It includes filling machines, sealing machines, wrapping machines, strapping machines, labelling machines and coding machines. In primary packaging there is direct contact with the product whereas secondary packaging is done outside of primary packaging. The selection of machine for primary and secondary packaging is depends on budget, integration, operating cost, machine technology and available floor space. Generally Stainless steel is used for packaging machine due to its strength, not affectivity with chemicals. Function of Packaging machine: For protecting product, packaging is necessary. In recent time packaging is done mainly through the use of packaging machinery. Machinery plays increasingly important roles such as: Improve labour productivity. Sliding blister sealing machine packaging machinery is much faster than manual packaging. One good example of this is the candy packing machine. Here, hundreds to thousands of candies can be wrapped in minutes. Ensure packaging quality. Mechanical packaging is particularly important for exported goods to achieve consistent packaging. Handle specialized requirements, such as vacuum packaging, inflatable packaging, skin packaging and pressure filling. Reduce labor and improve working conditions for bulky/heavy products. Protect workers from health effects brought by dust, toxic/hazardous products and prevent environmental contamination. Reduce packaging costs and save storage costs for loose products, such as cotton, tobacco, silk, linen, etc., by simply using compression packaging. Reliably ensure product hygiene by eliminating hand contact with food and medicines. 1.2 Types of Packaging products: Filling machine: Filling machine is used for food/beverage packaging. This is use for filling the bottle or pouch. The various types of filling machines are Auger/agitator filling machines, Flow filling machines, Tablet fillers and Positive displacement pump fillers. Sealing machine: Sealing machines are used for sealing the filled bags. Both liquid and solid can be bagged by using this packaging system. Strapping machine: Strapping means banding and bundling. It is the process of applying a strap to item to combine, hold, reinforce, or fasten it. Wrapping machine: It covers primary packaging. It is generally use for bulk packaging. Labelling machine: It is use for labialize the product. Cleaning machine: It is use for cleaning of final product. For example after manufacturing the gear, cleaning machine is used to remove dust particles before packaging. Drying machine: To remove the moisture from the product, drying machine is use. Sterilization machinery: It eliminates the biological agents (like virus) from the product. Container machinery: It is use for transporting container from one place from another place. Multifunction machine: It can perform multiple operations at the same time. Type of packaging machine according to degree of freedom: Automatic packaging machine Semi-automatic packaging machine 3. COMPANY PROFILE Company Name: INTERCHEM Address: Plot No. C1/1, G.I.D.C. Pandesara, Dist. Surat, Gujarat. Raw materials are filled in mixing tanks as per product requirement. Then the raw materials mix with each other and brew. Then after some interval of time, the temperature decrease. Then it is transport to centrifugal hydro for filtering the chemicals. All the output of centrifugal hydro is mixed. It proceeds to weighing machine and then proceed to stitching machine for final packaging. Then it stores to inventory. 5.PACKAGING PROCESS DISCRIPTION Storage Tank Weighing Stitching Inventory (figure 2 Flow chart of Packaging operation) In packaging process raw material is supplied from storage tank to the weighing machine and then it

2. INTRODUCTION  Packaging can be defined as "the science, art and technology of enclosing or protecting products for distribution, storage, sale, and use". Packaging also refers to "the process of design, evaluation, and production of packages".  Packaging machines are used for packaging process.  Packaging basically of two types. The single item such as water bottle can be regarded as the item that is primary packaging. Whereas a pack of bottles, shrink wrapped, would be regarded as the transport package used within the distribution chain is known as "secondary" packaging.  It includes filling machines, sealing machines, wrapping machines, strapping machines, labelling machines and coding machines.  In primary packaging there is direct contact with the product whereas secondary packaging is done outside of primary packaging.  The selection of machine for primary and secondary packaging is depends on budget, integration, operating cost, machine technology and available floor space.  Generally Stainless steel is used for packaging machine due to its strength, not affectivity with chemicals.

2.1 Function of Packaging machine: For protecting product, packaging is necessary. In recent time packaging is done mainly through the use of packaging machinery. Machinery plays increasingly important roles such as:  Improve labour productivity. Sliding blister sealing machine packaging machinery is much faster than manual packaging. One good example of this is the candy packing machine. Here, hundreds to thousands of candies can be wrapped in minutes.  Ensure packaging quality. Mechanical packaging is particularly important for exported goods to achieve consistent packaging.  Handle specialized requirements, such as vacuum packaging, inflatable packaging, skin packaging and pressure filling.  Reduce labor and improve working conditions for bulky/heavy products.  Protect workers from health effects brought by dust, toxic/hazardous products and prevent environmental contamination. 2|Page

 Reduce packaging costs and save storage costs for loose products, such as cotton, tobacco, silk, linen, etc., by simply using compression packaging.  Reliably ensure product hygiene by eliminating hand contact with food and medicines.

2.2

Types of Packaging products:

 Filling machine: Filling machine is used for food/beverage packaging. This is use for

filling the bottle or

pouch. The various types of filling machines are Auger/agitator filling machines, Flow filling machines, Tablet fillers and Positive displacement pump fillers.  Sealing machine: Sealing machines are used for sealing the filled bags. Both liquid and solid can be bagged by using this packaging system.  Strapping machine: Strapping means banding and bundling. It is the process of applying a strap to item to combine, hold, reinforce, or fasten it.  Wrapping machine: It covers primary packaging. It is generally use for bulk packaging.  Labelling machine: It is use for labialize the product.  Cleaning machine: It is use for cleaning of final product. For example, after manufacturing the gear, cleaning machine is used to remove dust particles before packaging.  Drying machine: To remove the moisture from the product, drying machine is use.  Sterilization machinery: It eliminates the biological agents (like virus) from the product.  Container machinery: It is use for transporting container from one place from another place.  Multifunction machine: It can perform multiple operations at the same time.

6. LITERATURE REVIEW: 1) Design and Development of Cost Effective Automatic Machine for Powder Packaging M. R. Saraf, V. V. Ruiwale, V. V. Kulkarni and S. M. Kulkarni Mechanical Engineering Department, MITCOE, Sri Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune, Maharashtra, India

Abstract: The packaging industry has advanced leaps and bounds over the few years. The pouch packaging machines also known as Form Fill and Seal Machines (FFS Machines) are available over a wide capacity range. A low cost automated packing machine can be used by small enterprises which would help reduce their cost of plant. This low cost automated machine uses simple pneumatic, mechanical and electric systems. In this paper we have presented one such low cost pouch filling machine. An additional weighing and pouring mechanism has been added to increase the accuracy of the system. The process flow has been described in detail. Various processes involved in the pouch packaging are neatly aligned and properly timed to get optimum production rate. A mechatronics system, developed for this machine, which takes feedback from sensors and accordingly controls the manipulators has been introduced in this paper. A microcontroller system is used for this particular machine. A detailed cost comparison between a conventional machine and the one developed by us has been presented. Keywords: Low Cost Automation, Microcontroller, PLC

2) Design and fabrication of variable rack and pinion steering geometry R. Rajasekar, T. Kathireshan, Rohit G Prasad, M. Pradhyumnan Department of Automobile Engineering, Sathyabama University, Chennai, Tamilnadu, India Abstract: This paper analyses the feasibility of improving the steering behaviour in traffic situations using variable steering geometry. The design and fabrication of rack and pinion has been done by using soildworks software. The objective of this paper is basically to design and manufacturing a variable rack and pinion with higher to lower ratio in order to sensitize the steering for better manoeuvrability for Indian road condition or urban road condition. A 8|Page

variable-ratio steering, is a system that uses different ratios on the rack, in a steering system. At the centre of the rack, the space between the teeth is smaller and the space becomes larger as the pinion moves down the rack. In the middle of the rack, you will have a sensitive ratio and the response becomes a-base as you turn the steering wheel towards lock. This makes the steering more sensitive, when the steering wheel is close to its centre position and makes it easier for the driver to steer at low speeds. Keywords: Rack and Pinion, soildworks, steering geometry, sensitive ratio.

3) Pouch packing machines are commonly known as Form Fill and Seal Machines. There are classified as two main types– Vertical Form Fill and Seal Machines and Horizontal Form Fill and Seal Machines. Vertical Form Fill and Seal Machines (VFFS Machine) are used to pack regular shaped solid products or liquids while, Horizontal Form Fill and Seal Machines are used to pack irregular shaped products. In this paper we focus on the Vertical Form Fill and Seal Machines. VFFS machines are widely used in most of the industries to pack products of various sizes (depending on their weights). The VFFS Machines are again classified in two ways- According to their type of motion (Continuous motion and Intermittent motion) and According to their type of automation (Fully automated and Semi automated). In making of the pouch two seals have to be made horizontal and vertical as it will be further explained in detail. Intermittent motion machine makes the vertical seal while the film is in motion but for the horizontal seal the film stops whereas, the continuous motion machine makes the vertical and the horizontal seal without stopping the film. Hence, higher production rates can be achieved by the continuous motion machine. On the other hand, Fully automated machine requires no human intervention while Semi automated machines require humans to perform some part of packing operation. The machine discussed in the paper can be classified as an intermittent motion machine or fully Automatic machine.

4) Design and selecting the proper conveyor-belt Konakalla Naga Sri Ananth, Vaitla Rakesh, Pothamsetty Kasi Visweswarao Mechanical Engineering Departments, KLU Guntur Abstract: Belt conveyor is the transportation of material from one location to another. Belt conveyor has high load carrying capacity, large length of conveying path, simple design, easy 9|Page

maintenance and high reliability of operation. Belt Conveyor system is also used in material transport in foundry shop like supply and distribution of molding sand, molds and removal of waste. This paper provides to design the conveyor system used for which includes belt speed, belt width, motor selection, belt specification, shaft diameter, pulley, gear box selection, with the help of standard model calculation.

7.5 Stepper Motor: Stepper motor is an electromechanical device which converts electrical pulses into distinct mechanical movements. Stepper motor shaft rotates in step by step when electrical command pulses are applied to it in proper sequence. The direction of rotation is directly proportional to the sequence of pulses applied. It is used at storage tank (to control flow) and at grabber (to operate the grabber motion). Advantages:  The rotation angle of motor is proportional to the input pulse.  The motor has full torque at standstill (if windings are energized).  Excellent response to starting/ stopping/ reversing.  It is possible to achieve very low speed synchronous rotation which a load that is directly proportional to the shaft. Disadvantages:  Resources can occur if not properly controlled. 23 | P a g e

 Not easy to operate at extreme high speed. Calculations : Torque = 4 x 9.81/100 = 0.3924 Nm (i) For Flow control Mechanism: F x r x sinα = T 30 x 0.15 x sin 90 = T T = 4.5 N.m Table 4 Stepper Motor specifications (For Flow Control Mechanism): Model Number

7.9 Stitching machine: Stitching machines are used for stitching purpose. Stitching machines were first used for the stitching of cloths at starting. But as time passes, it is used in other material stitching purposes like stitching of fibre bags, Plastic bags, etc. There are various types of machines are used as per their applications. There are mainly two types of stitching required like single stitch and double stitch. In the stitching of wearing cloths single stitch is used whereas in industries single as well as double stitch is used. For protecting from moisture and atmosphere double stitching is used for packaging.

7.10 Rectifier: A rectifier is an electrical device that converts alternating current, which periodically reverses direction, to direct current which flows in only in one direction. The process is known as rectification. Rectifiers have many uses, but are often found serving as components of DC power supplies and high-voltage direct current power transmission systems. Rectification may serve in roles other than to generate direct current for use as a source of power.

7.11 Step Down Transformer: A step down transformer has less turns on the secondary coil that the primary coil. The induced voltage across the secondary coil is less the applied voltage across the primary coil or in other words the voltage is “stepped-down”. It stepdown voltages form 440V to 33V.

8. WORKING OF WHOLE MACHINE :  At initial condition, the measuring chamber is empty. At that time the bag is attached to the supporting tank and pushes the button. The controlling plates of measuring chamber are open but there is no any material. So wait for closing of them.  When the control plates are closed, the flow control mechanism operates due to sensor and material flow occurs. This material falls into measuring chamber.  Measuring chamber is not rigidly connected. There are load cell mounted on the walls of the measuring chamber. Load cell measures the weight of the material.  At initial condition when measuring chamber is empty, there is only weight of measuring chamber is applied on load cell. So, Take it as zero weight. Now when material weight is reached nearer to the 48Kg, the flow control mechanism starts to close and when the weight is of complete 50 Kg occurs, Flow control valve is closed.  One worker manually pushes button then the controlling plates of measuring chamber are open and the material fills in the bag passes through the supporting chamber.  One worker manually put the bag on supporting chamber as shown in figure and pushes the button.  When button pushes, the first operation occurs is to grab the bag, then signal passes to the servo motor mounted on measuring tank and through rack and pinion mechanism it opens the control plates.  After 5 seconds of complete opening of control plates, it closes again and signal passes to the control valve and control valve opens. At same time bag is filled with material and grabbers are in open position and bag is placed on conveyor belt.  Conveyor belt is in continuous motion and there is transport towards stitching machine. Stitching machine placed at a distance of 100cm from the machine.  Worker is locked the bag in the stitching machine and again go towards to grab the bag. And whole operation repeats.  Here the flow control valve is operate with the help of stepper motor, Control plates are operates with the help of AC servo motor and grabbers are also operates with the help of stepper motor.  The whole machine is operated with the help of the one worker. And it is semi-automatic.

9. COST OF MACHINE : The total cost of machine includes various costs like material cost, component cost, manufacturing cost, inventory cost, transportation cost, labour cost, power consumption cost, etc.

Here we are considering the cost of material and components.

Total material usage cost = Rs. 24180/Cost of Load Cell = Rs.3150/Cost of stepper motor (used for flow control valve) = Rs.2816 /Cost of stepper motor (used for grabbers) = Rs. 50000/Cost of servo motor ( used for controlling plates) = Rs. 7630 /Cost of conveyor = Rs.70000 /Cost of Stitching machine = Rs. 27500 /Cost of rack and pinion = Rs.1000 /Cost of grabber = Rs. 400/Cost of 8051 microcontroller = Rs. 2400/Cost of Step down transformer = Rs. 5140/Hence total cost of machine = Summation of all above costs = 24180 + 3150 + 2816 + 50000 + 7630 + 70000 + 27500 +1000 +400 +2400 +5140 = Rs. 1,94,216/-
