JAM OF THE MONTH Track
‘Clapton Smoky’
from Sam Coulson’s ‘Custom Rock Blues’
JTC SAYS Essentially we’re looking at a very groovy but standard i-iv-v minor Blues here. So the regular D minor pentatonic (D F G A C) and Blues scales (D F G Ab A C) will fit perfectly over this track, and there’s plenty of room for a bit of spice and tension in certain places. You can also use the Aeolian scale (D E F G A Bb C) for a slightly more melodic approach, and accent chord tones on the changes to help your solo fit the harmony a bit more. Although our best advice is to really dig deep and feel your way through the track rather than over-thinking the theory! Be sure to listen closely to the other instruments in the track and play WITH them rather than over them - soloing is meant to stand out, but not at the expense of the overall musical experience.
