LESSON OBJECTIVES 1.Explain the basic concepts in tour guiding services; and 2.Identify the roles of a tour guide.

CORE CONCEPTS IN TOUR GUIDING What is a tour? Latin word tornare and greek word tornos, meaning to circle around, the word “tour” means to come back to the point of origin after going to a destination elsewhere (Theobald 1998).

CORE CONCEPTS IN TOUR GUIDING What is a tour guide? Is a person who guides people as they go through a foreign place to help them gain better appreciation of the place and the interesting thing to see there.

CORE CONCEPTS IN TOUR GUIDING The Philippine Department of Tourism (1995) defines a tour guide as “an individual who guides tourist, both foreign and domestic, for a fee, commission, or any other form of lawful remuneration.” - DOT only recognizes those who undergo proper training.

CORE CONCEPTS IN TOUR GUIDING What is Tour Guiding? Refers to the provision of professional service to interpret the cultural and natural heritage of an era(World Federation of Tourist Guide Association n.d.)

ROLES OF A TOUR GUIDE A tour guide plays important roles in tourism. According to the Australian Government’s Job Guide(n.), these roles include:

ROLES OF A TOUR GUIDE • Attending briefing meetings with the Tour Manager about important information about the tour group (e.g. age group, interests, and special needs). • Greeting tourists before starting the tour: • Learning their names; • memorizing their faces; and

ROLES OF A TOUR GUIDE • checking the number of people in the group. • Explaining emergency procedures to the group and making sure they understand them. • Distributing promotional material about the trip to the tourists. • Escorting individuals or groups on sightseeing trips: • Providing information about the history and culture of the places they visit;

ROLES OF A TOUR GUIDE(Daily) • Pre-briefing about the group. • Meeting the group. • Going over emergency procedures with the group. • Explaining points of interest during the trip. • Answering questions about the tour. • Distributing promotional material. • Making sure the group stays together and is safe until the end of the tour.
