Kifaru Military Gear History The Bloodlines.

I’ve been in the backpack business for nearly three decades, starting with world-class mountaineering packs under the Mountainsmith brand. I have always been a backpack hunter as well as a mountaineer, and adapted my personal Mountainsmith packs to hunting needs: managing a long gun, comfortably carrying very much heavier loads than ordinary backpackers, carrying out hide, horns and meat efficiently, and so forth. After selling Mountainsmith, I launched Kifaru International in 1997 - focusing on packs to fit the needs of backpack hunters. Following the atrocities of 9/11, I received a call from a fellow by the name of Mel Terkla. He had conducted an extensive investigation of all backpack builders to approach one regarding adapting their gear to produce a superior pack system for American soldiers. His first choice was Kifaru, citing our suspension systems, hauling systems, and extensive, versatile modularity as the most promising. Mel had extensive contacts in the soldiering world, and pledged to get our packs - as adapted - into the military market. Mel also has exquisite talent concerning military load-out needs. He introduced me to the fabulous PALS webbing concept, which enabled us to reach back into one of my earlier patents and create Kifaru’s Dock & Lock pocket system. I was thoroughly ready to do my part in fighting terrorism, and readily accepted Mel’s offer. We dug into converting my proven hunting packs for military duty. Foot hunters and foot soldiers have very similar weight, terrain and versatility needs. Kifaru Military Gear Division was launched in June of 2002.

Integrated Systems Approach.

Coordination is the key to a successful campaign, so our products are designed to be as versatile as possible, and to integrate with other products you might already own. Our packs accept any MOLLE compatible pockets, and our pockets fit anybody else’s MOLLE compatible pack. New Kifaru products will always retrofit our old ones - there is no planned obsolescence. Being a direct-to-customer firm, there is no need to out-glitz the competing packs on a dealers wall. This allows us to design for what actually does the best job of comfortably carrying very heavy loads in trail-less terrain in the middle of nowhere. We had learned that thickness and rigidity in suspension systems is NOT the most comfortable way to go. Instead, anatomical perfection is the key. That thinner, “drapier” waistbelts and shoulder straps assist anatomicalness to do the job the best. Bulky padding, “plates” on waistbelts, actually inhibit comfort. In fact, plates, hard thermo-molding and such things inevitably crush one’s hip bone points when the load is heavy enough and the march is far enough. There is no getting around it. Kifaru has succeeded in the marketplace via word of mouth - being more comfortable than ANY packs, despite going utterly against conventional doctrine which equates bulk and stiffness with comfort. Thickness seems to be a marketing imperative - a builder’s pack must have the most bodacious looking waistbelt and shoulder straps in order to compete with all those other brands who are busily doing the same marketing race. For those caught up in this spiral, there is zero incentive for stepping out of the race and beginning anew with a blank slate - to find out what really works best for ultra-heavy loads in extreme back country situations such as backpack hunting. We had nothing to lose - Kifaru was not being sold on any dealer pack walls - just out of a box delivered via UPS, and with the promise that if it didn’t do the best job ever, to just send it back. It turned out that users declared our thinner, but anatomically perfect suspension systems the best in the world - regardless of sport category. Appearances can be deceiving. We built what actually works best in the more demanding world of on-foot hunting. There was a considerable additional benefit reported: our svelte suspensions were more appropriate for being loaded and unloaded in vehicles and aircraft than any of their bulky, stiff competitors.

Looks vs. Feel. Extremely thick padded, rigid belts and shoulder straps can be deceiving. They might look comfortable, but lack the load spreading efficiency of a well engineered and anatomically correct suspension.

Zippered radio access

Interior You get a much more stable load when you can pack it tightly and "integrate" the elements, so we don't adorn the inside with a bunch of pockets and compartments- our interior is a single, tall tube. No air pockets means no-slop Chamber Pocket Standard on all our packs, this flat interior pocket at the top of each pack keeps valuables safe - ideal for keys, money, etc.. Pack shape: all our pack bodies are shaped with just right contours to allow you maximum upper body freedom and arm movement. Unlike most other manufacturers, we simply don’t make a barrel and add a suspension. All our packs are low profile - they do not “hang up” on obstacles and are exceptionally stealthy

Zippers. We use big, beefy Number Tens to prevent jamming, and they slide easily, even with mittens on. Dual pulls permit easy access from all sides.

Interior loops at the top let you hang a large radio pocket, and secure it tightly to the frame - and transfer the weight to the frame and waistbelt.

A pack that moves where you move, with no-slop performance.  This “stick-to-you” concept relies on low profile, anatomical contours of frame and suspension. The most fundamental of pack components is the suspension system - the “interface” between pack bag and its contents and you - the man carrying the load needed for the mission. Like a car, the weight of the "vehicle" is suspended on the frame. It is not loaded directly onto the frame, which would cause stress points and discomfort. You ca also distribute weight wherever you desire over your back.

Internal Frames. Twin aircraft grade aluminum stays on all our packs, even the smallest, provide support and weight transfer to comfortably carry heavy loads. HDPE frame sheet in our largest packs helps spread the load over your entire back. All contact points are carefully sculpted to naturally funnel weight away from your shoulders and to your hips for more efficient carrying. More comfort = heavier loads.

Two load hauling masters with the volume and features you need for your extended field jobs. Same style, different volumes. Modularity at its Best. All our other packs and pockets "dock" onto the EMR and MMR, and they accept any other MOLLE compatible pocket on the market. Ample PALS webbing allows pockets to be added to the top, sides, front and waistbelt. A Custom Fit. Individuals and small unit orders will get the EMR or MMR fit to their physical specifications. Extended Mission Ruck (EMR). The Mothership of all our packs, and is the most versatile, efficient ruck ever built for heavy missions. Bandolier Strap Kit Our removable EMR/MMR Top Hood is loaded with PALs webbing, making it easy to configure as a bandolier. Just click the hood off, click in the optional Bandolier Strap Kit, and throw it over your shoulder. A versatile daypack small enough for EDC, yet can be used as an assault pack or even a Two-Day pack with the addition of pockets or Pods. Suspensions

We classify our packs by suspension design, letting you optimize your mission needs and requirements for a ruck. Each title is suggestive of its attributes, and all adhere rigorously to our principles of comfort, stability, versatility and durability - even the smallest. There is no weight limit on any of our packs - if you can lift and carry the load (including casualty evacuation), the pack will perform in relative comfort, without fail. Period.

Duplex Suspension EMR & MMR

On our largest packs, the dual nature of the frame lets you remove it from the pack and convert to a hauler. The pinnacle of huge load capabilities, the Duplex provides incredible latitude for adjustment and fit, and can handle any load you're able to carry.

WrapTech Plus Suspension ZXR

This frame blends our WrapTech and Duplex Suspensions. You get exposed torso pads, EMR shoulder straps, lumbar pad, and waistbelt. It is fully capable of carrying 100 lb. plus loads in comfort, just like our EMR/MMR packs.

WrapTech Suspension Navigator, Pointman

This low profile suspension handles amazing loads when needed. Why do they compress the way they do? Most bag stuff sacks compress lengthwise - ours compress circumferentially ONLY - in order to fit neatly and tightly to the bottom. No dead air space, no “bowling ball” effect. It offers additional support and rigidity to the pack by integrating with the pack bottom.

We've been supplying the military with our rugged back country sleds since 1979. They've been proven tough and effective both in exploration and the combat fields for their ability to haul huge amounts of gear over snow and easy portability. These sleds are built to withstand the rigors of military use - like heavier loads and transportation bashing. Easy transport & storage. These sleds are designed to "nest" inside each other so that multiple sleds can be transported by vehicle or stored. Backpackable. Run into snowless terrain? I heard about Kifaru from a local tactical gear dealer, looked up your website, and the rest is history. I wasn't sure exactly which Kifaru pack fit my needs, so I ended up speaking with Mel and filling him in on what I'd be doing and the nature of my missions with respect to my tactical gear requirements. If nothing else gets said about Mel, that guy knows his gear! Let me just say that the Kifaru Zulu was by far the single most AWESOME pack I've had the pleasure of carrying on my back. Kifaru packs aren't cheap, but that pack was worth every dollar I spent. Additionally, the Combat GunBearer is simply ingenious. I can't tell you how valuable that piece of gear was during house searches, personnel searches, and basically any situation where I chose to use a secondary weapon system or where I needed both hands and didn't want to lose positive control of my primary weapon.
