Connections to the Standards

The activities in this book support the College and Career Readiness (CCR) Standards. These broad standards, which serve as the basis of many state standards, were developed to establish grade-by-grade educational expectations with the goal of providing students nationwide with a quality education that prepares them for college and careers. The standards begin in kindergarten, so, if your child is of preschool age, the activities will help set the stage for your child’s success with the following early mathematics, reading, and language standards for students in kindergarten and first grade. Mathematics Counting and Cardinality • Know number names and the count sequence. • Count to 100 by ones and by tens. • Count forward beginning from a given number within the known sequence. • Write numbers from 0 to 20. Represent a number of objects with a written numeral, 0–20. • Understand the relationship between numbers and quantities; connect counting to cardinality. • Count to answer “how many?” questions; given a number from 1–20, count out that many objects. • Identify whether the number of objects in one group is greater than, less than, or equal to the number of objects in another group. • Compare two numbers between 1 and 10 presented as written numerals.

Geometry • Correctly name shapes regardless of their orientations or overall size. • Analyze and compare two-dimensional shapes, in different sizes and orientations. • Distinguish between defining attributes (e.g., triangles are closed and three-sided) and non-defining attributes (e.g., color, orientation, overall sizes).

Reading Print Concepts Demonstrate understanding of the organization and basic features of print. • Follow words from left to right and top to bottom. • Recognize that spoken words are represented in written language by specific sequences of letters. • Understand that words are separated by spaces in print. • Recognize and name all upper- and lowercase letters of the alphabet. • Recognize the distinguishing features of a sentence (e.g., first word, capitalization, ending punctuation).

Phonological Awareness • Demonstrate understanding of spoken words, syllables, and sounds. Phonics and Word Recognition • Know and apply grade-level phonics and word analysis skills in decoding words.
