Passing triangle

What you tell your players the session is about 1. Passing accurately using different techniques.

The ability to pass accurately to feet over both long and short distances will increase your team’s ability to control the game and find holes in the opposition’s defence.

Original Format: 5 Short passing 111 Controlling passes

What to think about • Target player must work out which pass is best – sidefoot, driven pass or lofted? • Ball must be struck with pace but also be well “weighted” so teammate can control with a minimum of effort. • Target player should be on their toes while waiting for the service. • Use both feet.

Core Skills: 9 Distance passing

Set-up • 7 servers with a ball each plus a target player. • Servers line up to form two sides of a triangle. • Server at the point of the triangle approx

Passing triangle pass

25 metres away from the target player and directly opposite.

What you get your players to do

server 4

Server 1 passes to the target player who returns the ball. Server 2 immediately passes to the target player who passes it back.

server 7

server 1

The target player must return to their disc cone after each return of service.

target player

Practice continues around all 7 servers. After the target player has completed 7 passes, each player moves one position to their left, so the target player becomes server 1, and server 7 becomes the next target player.

Start the practice with a series of passes from servers 1-7.

What to call out • “Concentrate on accuracy first” • “Don’t try to hit the ball too hard” • “First touch out your feet”

server 4

Development The session can be developed by asking the target player to return the ball on the first touch for the shorter distances. The coach can call out which server the target player must pass to rather than going to each server in turn. Further variations include using one foot only to complete the triangle, or right foot to pass to players 1-4, and left to pass to players 5-7.

server 7

server 1

target player

Vary the sequence and increase the difficulty with fewer touches or passes using the player’s weaker foot.

40x25m

Game Set up manned target zones in four corners of a grid measuring approx 40 x 25 metres. Two teams of equal sides play a passing game, scoring points when they hit either a long or short pass accurately into a target zone. No player from either side is allowed to enter these zones. Condition the game so that a long pass to a teammate or target player must be hit by, say, every 4th pass. Soccer coaching plans you can take straight on to the field

In this game players score points for successful passes into the target zones. www.coach-soccer.com/sessions
