SYNOPSIS Mae Holland (Emma Watson) seizes the opportunity of a lifetime when she lands a job with the world's most powerful technology and social media company. Encouraged by the company's founder (Tom Hanks), Mae joins a groundbreaking experiment that pushes the boundaries of privacy, ethics and personal freedom. Her participation in the experiment, and every decision she makes soon starts to affect the lives and futures of her friends, family and that of humanity.
CRITICAL INCIDENT 1 : Disruptive Behavior at workplace Scene: Mae Holland received a call from her friend, Annie. Annie told her that she just got an interview for a new job and she becomes too excited and suddenly scream loudly in her office. Application of theory: Being able to control emotion and behave properly. Analysis of incident: It shows that Mae Holland cannot control her emotion at workplace that she disrupt other colleagues. Cause & Effect: Disruptive behavior will lead to dissatisfaction among others. Recommendation: Mae Holland should be able to control her emotion and behave appropriately in whatever situations. So that she will not disturb others.
CRITICAL INCIDENT 2 : Inappropriate Computer Use Scene: Mae Holland use company computer to communicate (video call) with her mother. Analysis of the incident: Mae Holland has use company computer for personal purpose. Application of theory: separate work life and work life in workplace. Cause & Effect: Lost productivity as employees use work time for personal tasks which involves business equipment. This will engage in unethical behavior. Recommendation: Employers should monitor employees while at work.
CRITICAL INCIDENT 3 : Disrespectful behavior Scene: When Mae Holland give her opinions about how to improve The Circle’s system in meeting, Eamon Bailey, the founder of the company has put his feet on the meeting desk while listening Mae’s ideas.
Analysis of the incident: It shows that Eamon Bailey do not have respect towards his employees as he put his feet on desk while meeting was held. Application of theory: Should show good example for other employees
Cause & Effect: If employer keep showing disrespectful behavior and bad work ethics towards employees continuously this can significantly diminish office morale. Recommendation: As a founder of the company, Eamon Bailey should practice workplace etiquettes as well respectful behavior against his employees. Thus, this will help to build a good relationship among employees and employer.
CRITICAL INCIDENT 4 : Interruption In Communication Scene : When Mae Holland try to convince how to improve The Circle’s system to Eamon Bailey, suddenly Annie interrupt during the discussion. Analysis of incident : The discussion were interrupted. Application of theory: Respect when others are talking.
Cause and effect : It shows unprofessional behavior and impoliteness in the meeting room. Recommendation : Annie should place a greater priority on listening to Mae Holland until she has done talking.
VIDEO 5 : CRITICAL INCIDENT 5&6
CRITICAL INCIDENT 5 : Unprofessional Attire Scene : During the meeting, Annie did not wearing appropriate clothing and she looks very messy. Analysis of incident : This reflects lack of professional ethics since Annie do not follow the dress code that the company has set for employees.
Application of theory: Need to wear professional attire at workplace. Cause and effect : This can send the wrong message to the others because it may cause them to think Annie did not take the job seriously regardless of the quality of Annie’s job performance. Recommendation : Annie must dress appropriately in business attire to show professional appearance in the workplace.
CRITICAL INCIDENT 6 : Bad Workplace Etiquettes Scene: Annie use bad language when she said ‘ this is such a bullshit ‘ and left the meeting room while the meeting was on. Analysis of incident : It shows improper ethic workplace as she is using foul language and her action also indicates that she has no respect for her superior and colleagues. Application of theory: Use proper language at workplace. Cause and effect : It shows an unethical behavior which may interrupted others in the meeting room. Recommendation : Annie should respect others under what circumstances and use a proper language based on the ethical behavior in a meeting.
CONCLUSION There is so much that we can learn from this video in term of professional and unprofessional behavior in the workplace. This video highlights the importance of good behavior at workplace, using company assets appropriately, respect each other and using proper language. We can conclude that all these aspects of communication do not only impact our relationship with others but also teach us to communicate effectively. We must remember that when interacting professionally, we have to show respect by listening attentively and observing politeness in every aspect of our communication. We must also dress appropriately to show professional appearance in the workplace.
