EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
This study mainly aims to propose effective and sustainable solutions to the identified problem which is about garbage in Sitio Tawason, Barangay Labogon, Mandaue City, Cebu. Specifically, this study aims to mitigate the impacts of such problem by addressing the most vital sources of the problem’s occurrence and to publicize, as necessary, the rationale of its inception and resolution. This study proposes that, through Takakura, a Japan-originated compost tool, wastes such as plastic, decomposed leaves and capped branches, human waste, contaminated water or any liquid substances of such quality may be disposed altogether in the most natural way, in pooling all wastes in a compost instrument. Fortunately, this instrument does not take any much time, energy, and effort to make which renders it one of quality mitigators for the waste disposal problem. To put simply, this study proposes an intelligent and efficient way of solving Sitio Tawason’s waste crisis through low-cost instrumentalities that is doable and environmental-friendly. On an entrepreneurial aspect, the citizens of the said neighbourhood will benefit from making the Takakura, by selling it among the community and/or to other communities interested in the acquisition of such product. This does not only build good financial standing among the families but also cultivate a healthy sense of progress and change among the neighbourhood. With the concerted efforts of the people in Sitio Tawason, the cleanliness to which every constituent of the area envisions shall be attained.

INTRODUCTION
Rationale of the Study Social entrepreneurship in modern society, as provided by David Bornstein, offers an altruistic form of entrepreneurship that focuses on the benefits that society may reap. Simply put, entrepreneurship becomes a social endeavor when it transforms social capital in a way that affects society positively. It is viewed as advantageous because the success of social entrepreneurship depends on many factors related to social impact that traditional corporate businesses do not prioritize. People who are poverty-stricken and are prejudiced due to their unfortunate status and lack of education find difficulty in engaging in employment to whatever and however circumstance and effort they bring. The essence of social entrepreneurship comes in and acts as the best avenue for these individuals to establish their finance’s stability and make a name for themselves, alongside the occurrence of motivation and gratefulness to which the employment brings to these people. Thus, the study entitled “TAKAKURA: A SUSTAINABLE APPROACH FOR WASTE REDUCTION AND MANAGEMENT” was conducted as a way to appeal to the public, especially the concerned masses to which the social problem of waste has great impact on, that there is a feasible solution to the problem. Through Takakura, a compost instrument originated from Japanese culture, the crisis on waste is mitigated through natural approach. This study analyzes the factors of the problem’s phenomena and provides an effective solution and all of its underlying tenets.
Significance of the Study This project aims to help the residents to bring their problem on wastes to an end. This does not also help them solve this social problem but also provides for them an income for sustaining their daily needs. This study encourages every member of the community to be responsible on their own wastes.

Profile of the Community Sitio Tawason, a poverty-stricken neighbourhood, is home to over fifty families situated in the rural area of Barangay Labogon, Mandaue City, Cebu. It’s location is one of the farthest neighbourhoods in the city, encouraging slagged activity and unsanitized behaviour. The community’s population exceeds its capacity to flourish and ability to maintain cleanliness, alongside the undisciplined behaviour of the rural folk and the inaction by its local government.

CHAPTER 2 NEED AND OPPORTUNITY ANALYSIS
Overview of Social Problem
Year 2015, the United Nations committed themselves to 17 life-changing goals to be achieved by the year 2030. These global goals are also known as the Sustainable Development Goals which include ending poverty, better healthcare, and equality, to name a few. However, it can never be denied that up to these present days, these goals are still far from being achieved. Ensuring healthy lives and promoting well being is one of the most important things to consider for sustainable development, and this is one of the current problems Brgy. Labogon, Mandaue City, Cebu faces. US President Jimmy Carter once said, “This growing mountain of garbage and trash represents not only an attitude of indifference toward valuable natural resources, but also a serious economic and public health problem.” This statement goes to mean that garbage has a serious impact on one’s well being and to the world as a whole. “Most human activities generate waste and the manner in which these wastes are handled, stored, collected and disposed of that poses risks to both the environment and human health.” (https://www.ukessays.com/essays/environmentalsciences/problems-of-waste-disposal-in-developing-countries-environmental-sciencesessay.php) In the case of the aforementioned barangay, according to the residents during the conducted interview, they have observed that their place has been used by many industries outside their barangay as a dumpsite. Also, based on their report, garbage in their area are not collected regularly and sometimes take a month to be fetched by the assigned officials. “Swerte nalang og makolekta usa sa usa ka semana” (Lucky for us if it gets collected once a week.), one of the residents said. Clearly, based on their reported statements, this waste problem is not only dependent on the residents but also on the part of the municipal officials. It was February 5, 2017 when The Freeman published a news about Barangay Captain Renato Suson receiving a complaint from the faculty and staff of Labogon National High School for his negligence of duty and violation of the implemented xi
Republic Act 9003 or the Ecological Solid Waste Management Law. In the complaint, school officials said that the barangay has failed to collect their school garbage for 4 months that time even if they keep reminding the chief about this issue. (https://www.philstar.com/the-freeman/cebu-news/2017/02/05/1669284/labogonmandaue-city-barangay-chief-faces-raps-uncollected-trash) By January 2019, Ex Mayor Luigi Quisumbing of Mandaue City said, “After assuming office 2 years ago, [I] thought that traffic was the city’s worst problem, but it’s not. It is the city’s garbage.” (https://www.pressreader.com/philippines/sunstarcebu/20190109/281625306443555) Incumbent Mandaue City Mayor Cortes during his State of the City Address (SOCA) on October 7, 2019 said that the city has been strictly implementing solid waste management in addition to his announcement of the opening of the night market and the reopening of Barangay Labogon slaughterhouse. (https://www.pressreader.com/philippines/sunstar-cebu/20191008/281496458032791) However, this statement of him is not parallel with the current situation of Labogon. Based on the information gathered last November 2019 from the person or official assigned in demographics of Brgy. Labogon, they do not have open dumpsites ,and sanitary landfills and only one compost pit to dispose their wastes into. This alone, will cause a big problem to the appropriate waste disposal or management to the community. The local government did not provide proper area for people to dump their trash and also they do not monitor their assigned workforce for the collection of the accumulated trash of the residents. Solid waste management has remained a big challenge for local government officials, specifically in Barangay Labogon even long after the implementation of Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000.

Attitude of people toward work, and their willingness to help their environment clean Lifestyle The idea of some that little things actually do not matter will make this project unsuccessful
Root Cause Analysis
Education There is lack of education on how to dispose properly and how to handle too much garbages
Improper Waste Disposal Lack of strict rules with regards to garbages Non collection of garbages by the assigned personnel Lack of discipline
People (The Government and the Residents)
Fig. 2 Root Cause Analysis of the Existing Problem
The main problem of the community is the dirty environment due to garbage which is improperly disposed. Based on the conducted study, it was found out that the root causes of this problem lies on people of the community themselves and education. As regards to education, residents should be taught on how to dispose their garbage properly. In case of failure by the assigned person of the government to collect their trash, people should know how to handle these and not just let the garbage scatter everywhere. Another root cause is the People (The Government and the Residents). Lack of rules and regulations by the local government unit and applying these strictly is highly needed to impose discipline to people. Lastly, it is important that garbage in the household be collected to ensure clean environment in the entire municipality.
xiv
Environmental Landscape
In line with the barangay's issue about waste management, the baranggay officials of Labogon hired people who will collect the garbages. They will collect the garbages twice or thrice a week. However, there are cases that the collection of wastes will only happen once a week. There are also cases that even weekly collection of garbages became impractical. For us, we cannot tell that the barangay's action is really effective. Based on the result of the conducted interview, we rate the effectiveness of the barangay's action as 6/10 (10- very successful, 1-not successful). Out of 15 households, 13 of them said that waste disposal is still their number 1 problem and this is due to the failure to collect their garbage by the assigned persons of the barangay. For them the best way to solve the problem is to fix the schedule of the collection of garbages.
Barrier Barangay Labogon needs a lot of improvement. We can see factors that hinder the improvement of their community. One of which is lack of education.. As a result, they might not consider takakura as a way of helping them and might think that this is just a waste of time for them. Lack of education results to ignorance and then to being close minded of new things being introduced, though this doesn’t apply to all.
Social Entrepreneurial Opportunity
Since most of the respondents said that their number 1 problem is garbages, we propose the Takakura. Takakura is a project where garbages are processed to produce fertilizers. In that way, they can earn profit and lessen the garbages in their area. The main beneficiaries of the proposed solution are the: •Residents - they will be earning profit through selling the fertilizers •barangay officials of Labogon - through Takakura, the garbages in their area will decrease.
xv
Chapter 3 THE SOCIAL ENTERPRISE
Social Enterprise In response to the existing dilemma of the barangay which is improper waste disposal and waste management, the group has thought of an idea to solve this which is creating takakura which they can use in their households or sell in the neighborhood for profit. Through this, the people will not only enjoy the profit they might receive but they will also enjoy a cleaner and greener environment. “Takakura or Takakura Composting method is wherein organic wastes are broken down by micro-organisms that are cultivated from local materials. The method involves making a seed compost from fermented solutions and a fermenting bed. Organic waste is mixed with the seed compost and left to degrade in a ventilated container or basket.” https://www.mysunwayproperty.com/Community_News-@Takakura_DIY_Composting.aspx Mission Statement To promote sustainability and cost effective practices through an integrated system of waste reduction, reuse, recycling, decomposed and making it into business.
Vision Statement To be a model in the conservation of the environment, under our program to deliver permanent sustainable solutions to the environmental problems faced by Barangay Labogon. To be a leader in reducing the amount of waste materials and promote responsibility in each aspect of individual. Recover waste for its best use and transform waste into business that could help the community decrease the number of garbage and earn income.
xvi
Opprtunity Statement
Barangay Labongon has been experiencing poor proper waste disposal, huge amount of garbage were dumped anywhere and slow progress of collection of the garbage. Residents in barangay labangon where suffering bad odor due to defective waste disposal activities. As a result it can affect the health, not just of the children, but of all residents. Takakura Composite activity can mitigate the social problems, aside from that they can earn profit from that activity. This activity allows some efficient and effective waste management. Foul odor in their area caused by these trashes will be reduced.

Social and Economic Impact Indicators
Successful Social Entrepreneurial Opportunities emanate from well planned and organized objectives. There are two objectives types of objectives an enterprise should have. First is a social objective. Social objectives are those that aim to accomplish something of social value. And the other one is Financial Objective which is based and anchored in economic value and focuses on financial sustainability. Financial Measures are drawn from both private and nonprofit practice. Objectives’ primary purpose is to provide impact to the society not just to the enterprise as well.
Impact Model Impact Model is designed to serve as an instrument to help entrepreneurs analyze how the operations work and contribute to decision-making activity for the development of the enterprise by providing vision, mission, goals, and strategies. This model makes the connections simple, clear, and easily understood. It gives an overview on how things should be done. What are seen in the impact model are Mission Statement, Problem Statement, Validated Product or Service, and Metrics that Illustrate Impact. Business Model A business model illustrates how an organization creates, delivers, and captures value in social, cultural or other context. It is important because it is designed for the successful operation of the business. Mission and vision statement are components of a business. It is combined to provide statement of company's goal, purpose and objective but sometimes these two are used interchangeably. Mission statement defines the company's business, its objectives and its approach to reach those objectives while vision statement describes the desired future position of the company. Operational Models Operational models are designed in accordance with the social enterprise's financial and social objectives, mission, marketplace dynamics, client needs or capabilities, and legal environment. They illustrate configurations used to create social value (measurable xviii
impact) and economic value (income), and can be applied equally to institutions, programs, or service delivery. Logic Models Logic models are based on theorizing acceptable models of rationale to curtail problems in the society. It puts great emphasis on planning and strategy as it is a logic model namely. It starts with an input to activites then moves to outputs and its outcomes and eventually ends to impact. This way of approaching problems provide a logical and easy way to assess and control situations as well as planning them to ensure feasibility.

CHAPTER 5 SUMMARY AND CONCLUSIONS
Summary
Provided with the current situation of Sitio Tawason, Barangay Labogon, Mandaue City, our proposed social enterprise aims to help solve the social problem they are facing as of the moment which is about excessive garbage and how to dispose it properly. Takakura, or takakura composting is a method in which organic materials such as leaves, decayed fruits, etc. wil be used as fertilizer. This will be put in a basin with soil where plants can be planted. The decayed organic materials will then serve as fertilizer for the plant planted inside the big basin or pail. Instead of the trashes being scattered everywhere, it can now be used as a fertilizer. This way of composting can also be used to gain profit. Residents can create their own takakura then sell it to the public who does not have the luxury of time to create such. Above all, they will be able to somehow help solve their problems in garbages.
Conclusion
All throughout this course, we have witnessed a lot of social problems our society is currently facing. With this, we were able to learn and realize that we are not just students, but rather we can also do something to help the community solve these existing social problems. We have realized that there a lot of things that we can actually do for the society. We just need to first open our eyes to the reality and be involved. This immersion, through this course, taught us the value of helping others and our world as a whole. This will serve as a lesson to us as we journey the surface of the planet earth.
