1. Steel, wood or other suitable materials shall be of size and strength to resist movement during concrete placement. 2. The form material should also retain horizontal and vertical alignment until removal. 3. Forms should be used free of distortion and defects. 4. Flexible spring steel forms or laminated boards shall be used to form radius bends as required. 5. Extruding equipment shall be of approved commercial quality and design. D. Joint Dowel Bars

1. Plain billet steel bars for load transfer, expansion joints and transverse contraction joints, shall conform to the provisions of SECTION 03205, Grade 40. 2. Bars should be cut true to length with ends square and free of burrs. E. Expansion Joint Material

1. Shall comply with applicable requirements of SECTIONS 07910 and 07920 forpreformed expansion joint fillers and sealers, respectively.

.

Procedure

A. Surface Preparation

1. The subgrade shall be constructed true to grade and cross-section, as shown on the Contract Drawings, and thoroughly compacted before placing the concrete. If the section is not indicated on the Contract Drawings, the width to be excavated shall be 300 mm each side of the outside edges of the curb or gutter. 2. The completed subgrade shall be tested for grade and cross-section by means of a template supported on the side forms, and shall not project into the planned concrete cross-section at any point. 3. The subgrade shall be of uniform density. 4. The subgrade and forms (where applicable) shall be wetted prior to placing concrete.

B. Form Construction 1. Forms shall be set to the required grades and lines. They shall be rigidly braced and secured. 2. Sufficient number of forms shall be installed to allow continuous progress of the work, and such that forms can remain in place at least 24 hours after concrete placement. 3. The depth of forms for back of curbs shall be equal to the full depth of the curb. The depth of face forms for concrete curbs shall be equal to the full face height of the curb. 5. Benders or thin plank forms may be used on curves, grade changes, or for curb returns. Back forms for curb return may be made of 15 mm thick bender together for the full depth of the curb. 6. All forms shall be sufficiently strong and rigid and securely staked and braced to obtain a finished product correct to the dimensions, line and grade required. Forms shall be cleaned and oiled before each use. 7. The curbs and gutters may be constructed by the use of approved slip-form or extrusion equipment provided that the completed curbs and gutters are true to shape, grade and line, and the concrete is dense and of the required surface texture. The extrusion machine shall be equipped with grade line gages or pointers in a manner that will provide a continuous comparison between the curbs and gutters being placed and the planned grade, indicated by an offset guide line. 8. The completed formwork shall be checked for grade and alignment to the following tolerances: a) Top of forms, not more than 3 mm in 3 m. b) Vertical face on longitudinal axis, not more than 6 mm in 3 m. 9. The forms shall be cleaned after each use. The form release agent shall be coated as often as required to ensure separation from concrete without damage. C. Fixing Reinforcement 1. The reinforcement shall be placed and supported as specified in the referenced Sections.

D. Construction Requirements 1. In constructing curbs, entrance shall be provided for driveways. The entrances shall be of the dimensions shown on the Contract Drawings.

2. Concrete curbs to be constructed over an existing pavement shall be anchored to the pavement by means of steel dowels embedded in 1:1 Portland cement and sand mortar in holes drilled in the pavement, as shown on the Contract Drawings. 3. Dowels shall conform to the provisions for reinforcing steel bars specified in RC SECTION 03205 and shall be spaced and sized as shown on the Contract Drawings. 4. Approved anchor bolts may be used in lieu of dowels. E. Concrete Placement 1. Concrete shall be placed using methods that prevent segregation of the mix. The concrete shall be consolidated along the face of forms with an internal vibrator. The vibrator shall be kept away from joint assemblies, reinforcement, or side forms. 2. Only square-faced shovels shall be used for hand-spreading and consolidation. Consolidation shall be done with care to prevent dislocation of steel bars and joint materials. 3. Concrete shall be deposited and spread in a continuous operation between transverse joints. 4. When adjacent pavement lanes are placed in separate pours, mechanical equipment shall not be operated on the hardened concrete until the curbs and gutters have attained sufficient strength to carry the loads without damage. 5. Extrusion machines shall have vertical forming tubes which are readily adjustable vertically during forward motion of the machine to provide, when necessary, a variable height of curb conforming to the pre-determined curb grade; and with grade line gages or pointers attached to the machine in a manner which will provide a continual comparison between the curb being placed and the planned curb grade indicated by the offset guide line. The extrusion machine may be operated on rails or forms set at uniform depth below the pre-determined finished top of curb grade. 6. Concrete shall be fed uniformly to the machine. Concrete should be of such consistency that, after extrusion, it shall maintain the shape of the curb section without support. 7. Prior to removal of the forms, the surface shall be finished true to grade using straight edge float, not less than 3 m in length, operated longitudinally over the surface of the concrete. Form clamps shall be so constructed as not to interfere with the operation of the float. 8. Immediately after removing the front curb forms, the face of the curb shall be troweled smooth to a depth of not less than 50 mm below the flow line of the gutter, and then finished with a steel

trowel. The top surface shall be finished and the front and back edges rounded as shown on the Contract Drawings. 9. After the face of the curb has been troweled smooth, it shall be given a final fine brush finish with strokes parallel to the line of the curb. 10. The top and face of the finished curb shall be true and straight, and the top surface of the curb shall be of uniform width, free from humps, sags, or other irregularities. When a straight edge 3 m long is laid on the top or face of the curb, the surface shall not vary by more than 3 mm from the edge of the straight edge, except at grade changes or curves. 11. Repairs shall be made by removing and replacing the entire unit between scoring lines or joints for all non-conforming work. F. Concrete Finish

1. After striking off and consolidating concrete, the exposed surface shall be smoothened by screeding and floating. The float shall be adjusted to consolidate the surface and produce a uniform texture. 2. After floating, the surface shall be tested for trueness with a 3 m straight edge. The concrete shall be distributed as required to remove surface irregularities. The repair areas shall be re-floated to provide a continuous and smooth finish. 3. The edges of gutter, back top edge of curb, and transverse joints shall be rounded to 6 mm radius with an edging tool, unless otherwise indicated on the Contract Drawings. 4. After completion of floating, and when excess moisture or surface sheen has disappeared, the surface finishing shall be completed in either of the following ways, as required by the Royal Commission: a) Broom finish by drawing a fine-hair broom across the concrete surface perpendicular to the line of traffic. Repeat operation if required to provide a fine line texture acceptable to the Royal Commission. b) Trowel finish, which is smooth and free of trowel marks and is uniform in texture and appearance. 5. The forms shall be left in place for at least 24 hours after concrete has been placed. After form removal, ends of joints shall be cleaned and minor honeycombed surface areas should be pointed.

Areas or sections of major honeycombing should be removed and replaced as directed by the Royal Commission. 6. The finished appearance of curbing shall be uniform in color. The Contractor shall clean all discolored concrete. The concrete may be cleaned by abrasive blast cleaning or other methods approved by the Royal Commission to provide uniform color.

6 INSPECTION AND TESTING:

6.1

Services of client approved third party testing agency shall be utilized for testing.

6.2

Perform all tests and inspection in accordance with the client specifications and ITP’s.

6.3. Independent Testing Laboratory shall be employed to perform field and laboratory testing which shall include compressive tests of molded concrete cylinder tests, slump, unit weight, air content (where air entrapment is required) and fresh concrete temperature.
