This Excerpt is taken from Chapter 4 ‘Intros’ CD 52 Sometimes the chord progression of the tune will give you inspiration for the introduction This intro is for the tune ‘Early Autumn,’ a beautiful ballad with a descending Major 7chord progression.

CD 53: This pianistic intro makes use of block chords, and reminds me of pianist Hampton Hawes.

CD 54: The tune ‘Body and Soul’ starts on chord ii, and so your intro should prepare this. Here, we play the last 8 bars of the form with arpeggiated chords and out of tempo.

CD 55: This example is for a tune such as ‘Just Friends’ that starts on chord IV, played out of tempo.
