What is a science city? A Science city can be place where two types of people come. One category is the crowd coming for enjoyment and purpose of recreation just like any other museum. The other type of crowd that comes to the place is mostly the children and schoolchildren. The design priorities are given to the organized school trips because these are the crowd those will get maximum benefit out of the project in the form of knowledge. Science cities are beacons of knowledge which are displayed in a perfect balance of fun and learning.

Importance of science city

to design, develop and fabricate science museum exhibits, demonstration equipment and scientific teaching aids for science education and popularization of science.

Background The first Science City of the country was opened by NCSM in Kolkata in 1997. Thereafter Govt. of Punjab had established Pushpa Gujral Science City in 2005 in Jalandhar and Govt. of Gujarat had set up Gujarat Science City in Ahmedabad in 2012.

ASSUMPTION MODEL FOR SCIENCE CITY • It focuses on the impact of a science center on its community of interest and does not attempt to model a science center’s organization, operations or environment. • The income for the science center may come from a variety of sources including government, donors, visitors, internal and external business enterprises. • The primary audience for science centers may be on-site visitors and/or outreach programs in schools, public places or the Internet.

The model shows that a science center, with its mission, strategic plan and corporate structure relies on funding, staff and volunteers for its daily functioning. The science center produces a large number of outputs for its clients or visitors such as exhibitions, programs and a web site. These outputs have impacts on the science center’s community of interest. If we can measure these impacts and show that they have the desired effects, then it will be a strong position to provide evidence that justifies the value of the science center.

Definitions of terms used in the model The impact of a science center is defined as the effect or influence that a science center has on its community of interest.

The community of interest is the group of people and organizations that the science center considers to be its clients or potential clients. The Personal impact of a science center is defined as the change that occurs in an individual as a result of his/her contact with a science center. It includes factors such as: • Science learning

• Changed attitudes to science • Social experience • Career directions formed • Increased professional expertise • Personal enjoyment

The Societal impact of a science center is defined as the effect that a science center has on groups of people, organizations, and on the built and natural environment. Examples of societal impact are: • Local/regional/international tourism

The Political impact of a science center is its influence on government policies and priorities. It is its impact on all of Government.

around them.

CURRENT SITE CONDITIONS

To achieve a design solution that appeals to all age groups, encourages curiosity of minds and offers an enriching experience in both in terms of space and developments in field of science.

To satisfy area requirements of science centre

Some new category of buildings is introduced in terms of design and functionality that can enhance the function of the site. To establish the project in a way it promotes education as well as tourism blending it into the already existing scenario.

SITE JUSTIFICATION • The site is very first kind of project announced by the government being built on large scale can serve as the new landmark to the city as there were no science city earlier in the city. • The site being rectangular distributing the functions and services can set in smooth flow .Surrounded by other important building in the radius of 15-20km therefore it must attract surrounding crowd as well as outsider from different places and countries.

DESIGN REUIREMENTS The visitor experience of the Science City consists of • • • • • • •

7500 square metres of permanent exhibition integrating hands-on, participative exhibits, with some changing exhibits 6 spaces for experimentation and making- indoors and outdoors A 4-D theatre and/or virtual reality ‘pods’ or similar updated virtual reality technology at time of project realization 1300 square metres space for temporary exhibitions Building Exhibition- where the sustainable building characteristics will be made visible to the visitors Cafeterias, playground, and public spaces Dormitory for school children
