Masculine and Feminine All Spanish nouns and adjectives have gender. This means they are either masculine or feminine. Here are two basic rules to help determine the gender of words. There are other rules for gender which you will learn as you study more Spanish. 1. Spanish words ending in -o are usually masculine. 2. Spanish words ending in -a are usually feminine. It’s a Small World In Spanish, there are four ways to say “the”—el, la, los, and las. The definite article (the) agrees with its noun in gender (masculine or feminine) and number (singular or plural). Masculine singular nouns go with el. Feminine singular nouns go with la. Examples:

el libro (the book) la silla (the chair)

el papel (the paper) la regla (the ruler)

Masculine plural nouns go with los. Feminine plural nouns go with las. Examples:

los libros (the books) las sillas (the chairs)

los papeles (the papers) las reglas (the rulers)
