Keep Drawing, As Always

Architects have no choice but to depend on others when it comes to actually create something. For us , the drawings that we make in order to communicate the images in our minds to the others , are the only and absolute ‘ words' that we have. Scale , proportion , expression of details , texture of materials-the information that we pass on for the realization of a space is diverse and sensory. A loquacious ‘ word' is not necessarily a better one. Sometimes a short-spoken , tacitum drawing conveys a lot more. Wh at matters is how much of the expectations and dreams for the architecture to be built can be made out through the drawing一the architect's dialogue capability.

We are more fascinated by the ambivalence in Le Corbusier's architecture: while trying to give well-defined logic , he falls short of immersing himself in simple principles , as symbolized in his own career which starts from the box-type urban house that embraces spatial drama and ultimately leads to the free-spirited labyrinthine space. For example , looking at the series of works from his white perio d, while the entirety demonstrates a 企amework based on clear-cut logic , the parts display a subtle disruption of such order and are given independent expressions where they are needed. A person with a minimum knowledge of architecture who visits Villa Savoye would understand: details on the long horizontal window sash that collect dew drops; design of ventilation window embodying the wall's expression; design of the small counter which also serves to hide the equipments.... What we find here is the extremely human presence of an architect who looks straight at the human living which is complex , full of contradictions and opposite to abstract concepts. Le Corbusier has been concemed about the logical clarity of architectural concepts more than anyone else. And that is precisely why he suffered from the con f1 ict between concept and reality more than anyone else , and cared so much on the details , that is , the part in which comfortable human living is to take place

Every good architect in the past has used good ‘ words' to create good architectural spaces. Le Corbusier's in particular were significant in that they were the first ‘ words of an architect' to be used as a means of propaganda directed to the society. Drawings for the Dom-ino system, sk巳tches that showed the five points of modem architecture; perspectives of such space realized filled with dynamism; space diagrams of Unité as an expression of a city within a city; and drawings for the contemporary city plan for three rpillion people in which he clearly showed an ideal contemporary city-from the beginning of his career, Le Corbusier has constantly been concemed about drawing architecture as concepts that transcend reality. Onto such appealing imageries he overlapped straightforward, provocative phrases such as ‘ A House Is A Machine For Living' or ‘ Sun , Space , Green' and advocated the logic of architecture that is universal , common to the times. Le Corbusier played an important role in the revolution of modem architecture in early the 20th century. However, the fact that he created the no口丑 s of modem architecture is not the

Fortunately in 2007 on the occasion of the 120th anniversary of Le Corbusier's birthday a number of symposiums and exhibitions w巳re held and new compilation of works were published around the world to review his life achieveme时， enabling us to look at many drawings and sketches made during his work processes that would otherwise have never seen the light of day. One of them is the activities record edited by the Fondation in which the entire process of his historical maste叩 iece Villa Savoye is faithfully reconstructed with an enormous quantity of sketches and precise data. There existed in fact three plans before settling on the actual plan. The earliest one consists of sketches of slopes , with layers of lines drawn with pencil on watercolor paper. The rough strokes convey a sense of anticipation for the unknown spaces. Subsequently, the slopes were for some reason canceled and two plans were made with stairs linkin!!: different levels. Both of them share the same structural D diagram with the Dom-ino skeleton and the five elements in modem architecture

such as the piloti , horizontal window and rooftop garden , but the spatial promenade is nowhere to be found . Then finally the slope plan is once again brought up . Although some changes have been made on the program , the imagery is close to the initial plan. This one became the working plan , and gave birth to a house that marked the start of the era of the 20th cen阳ry modern architecture Interestingly enough , besides such dramatic changes in the process , traces of Le Corbusier's constant search for details can be found in the sketches. He contemplates the details of the balustrade of staircase while studying the spatial composition , and speculates over urban architecture with pilotis while worrying about the way the drain is positioned on the edge of the eaves. The vital energy of the parts that fills the space realized and seems to talk to us takes its source from the assemblage of Le Corbusier's continuous train of though t. Architecture will never end as long as we work with our own hands-engraved there are the footprints of a brave architect who enjoyed and suffered living and creatmg. Now when we come to think about architecture of our own time , the circumstances surrounding architecture has changed extensively after half a century from the end of the era of maestros. Symbolic is the emergence of CAD (Computer-Aided Design system) , taking over from human hands and drawing plans for them. You no longer find draftsmen using T-squares and triangles in an architect's office. Drawings are all taken inside the black box of a computer. The act of design mostly amounts to selecting data. Consequently, productivity of architectural design has surely increased. With a certain amount of database , an apprentice in my office with less than a year of experience can finish an amazingly elaborate drawing in a short time. However, behind such convenience hides a terrifying reality that someone who knows nothing about materials and details can manage to design through cut and paste of data. Lately, we often hear about such ‘ castle-in-the-air' design drawings eventually causing confusion on the construction site. 1 myself become anxious each time people show me a CAD drawing printed on a stark white sheet of paper, over its inappropriate beauty and the lack of content. It was just until a dozen years ago that we , like in the times of Le Corbusier, used to draw plans by ourselves. We kept on drawing intensively, making full use

of every knowledge and experience that we have amasse d, in order to grasp the scale of a space and the problems of its details. And it was through drawing that we found clues to solving such problems. With a number of trial and errors left as marks and lines , a manually drawn plan was not beautiful in its own righ t. A good portion of hours spent on it might have been useless indeed. But the traces of our hands that are left on the drawing were the raw words of the designer that convey the creator's ideas better than anything else. Speculating and hesitating , time spent in rewriting the same details again and again was a process of architecture that was necessa可 in gathering the threads of details that are valid enough to contend with space Wh at an architect has lost for the digitalization of design process are not only ‘ words' but also the time to think, in order to develop a sense of fullness in the space in which the architect anchors hislher own thoughts. The continual wave of digitalized society is about to change the meaning and presence of architecture itself, along a trend to consider architecture as an industrial product , like automobiles and home appliances. A house built by combining parts that the users have chosen from a catalog-industrialized architecture , which has used to be one of the subject themes in modern architecture , is on the verge of being realized in a futile form that is totally different from the imageries that people like Charles Eames have dreamed during the 1950s. There is no space left for the architec t's thoughts to find a place inside. No one can say for certain about how architecture in the future ought to respond to the ever-changing times and society, or what will become of the vocation of architect along the way. However, if we were to expect of architecture a value as culture that is more than just being an object, we have to face the harsh reality and fight our way through. Not so much as a way to challenge such tide of the times , 1 still believe in the drawing representing the designer's ‘ words' . Although 1 am obliged to use CAD drawings in my practice , 1 hand draw without exception the most important piece that represents my intent of design. My method of creating drawings by superimposing plans of different dimension and scale has never changed since 1 had started architectural design 40 years ago. Same as always , 1 think , draw and create , in search of the quintessence of architecture.

Museum building lor a collection 01 historic and modern a 内 Irom late 19th century to the early 20th century

The site is located in the vicinity of Dusseldorf, Germany , which was previously a NATO rocket launch site near the Insel Hombroich Museum at the riverside of Erft Ri ver, known as one of the foremost "park" museums in the world This project was conceived as a new facility to store the collection of Oriental Art and Modern Art of Victor and Marianne Langen. We engaged in this project by setting themes of how the new building would be related to the preexisting environment , and how the building spaces would accommodate and react to these artworks of different characteristics. A narrow space surrounded by wind breaking earth banks has been allocated to the building , within the vast vacant lot of the fo口ner rocket launch site. The space in the middle of the site is dedicated to th 巳 museum space; the space on the gateway side is provided as an approach with a 仕ont garden emphasized by a water pond; the space behind the building is the sculpture garden for visitors to res t. The building configuration is composed in three wings; one is a permanent collection exhibition gallery in a doublemembrane structure enclosing a concrete box into a glass skin; the others two form temporary exhibition galleries juxtaposed to each other and half buried underground , placed at angle with a 45 degrees rotation from the permanent collection exhibition wmg. The nested structure of the permanent collection exhibition wing provides a buffering,‘ veranda' area around the inner concrete box , which refers to the spatial configuration of traditional Japanese architecture. We intended to produce a fluidity between interior and exterior spaces , allowing visitors to feel as if they are walking in the landscape while they experience the museum space. Also , we brought in natural light dramatically through skylights into the closed volumes of the temporary exhibition wings buried under the ground level-we aimed for an upli 丘ing ， dynamic space for modern art , which stands in contrast with the more static space of the permanent collection exhibition wing.

The building site is located on the gradual hilly condition near Baden-Baden , Germany . It is a museum to exhibit the works of sculptors , Wolfgang Kubach and his wife , Ann a Maria Kubach-Wilmsen. The building houses an interior exhibition room produced by stone walls caped with a gable roof, while an exterior exhibition space is also provided outside of the building separated 仕om the surrounding environment by concrete walls. For the interior exhibition space , the roof truss in bam house style unique to the local area is reused , which was constructed in 18th century. A skylight is cut out from the upper part of the roof taking advantage of the timber work, and its inner walls supporting up the roof truss is bui 1t by exposed concrete corresponding to the exterior walls. It is intended to integrate the old and new elements in con企ontational manne r. The L-shaped wall encloses to produce and configure an exterior exhibition space , while we pictured an image that the wall surf坦ce gradually expands in co町unction with the sloping ofthe site. A water garden placed in front of the exhibition room provides an excursion quality to the lirnited space, while 由e quality produces a variety of spatial sequences. We sought for a microcosmic sculpture muse旧n by small but dense quality space. 石雕博物馆

Gunma Insect World Insect Observation Ha l/ Kiryu , Gunma 1997-2005

Gunma Insect World is a learning facility complex , making a good use of the nature left at home province . The core of this program is to observe ecologies of the insects inhabiting the surrounding nature , thus it was planned to construct an insect observatory as a center of the field work activities , which is configured in two large zones. One zone consists of spaces such as a hall , gallery space , learning exhibition space for the workshop held at this facility , whi le the other is an enormous ecology conservatory recreat ing the climate of semitropical conditions The site of the Insect Observation Hall is located at southeast of the Insect W orld , near the entrance area of the site with 48 ha of the land space. The facility is configured with the podium section with a stepped roof terrace that houses a learning exhibition space , and the curved glass roofing with a space frame structure hovering above the podium . The ecology conservatory occupying half of thi s facility building

space is designed in the way that a section of the podium is sliced out along with the edge line of the glass roof, in order to produce an airy conservato巧I space as if the topography of the surrounding nature is directly ge忧 ing into the interior space. The exhibition space inside of the podium evolves in three dimensional manner via the void ceiling , under the theme of an image producing an underground labytinth. The stepped roof terrace functions as a stage facing toward the entire Insect World behind the frontal water garden , and an open air exterior theater stage with the capacity of 1,500 people , regardless of the weathe r. 群马昆虫世界

cou口yards inverting interior and exterior spaces , and the skylight cuts into the roof ln order to maximize transitional aspects of light into the building space , we intended to provide a concise format and order by eliminating any arbitrariness in the spatial configuration and details. The visible sign that tells the presence of the "lnvisible House" is just a single continuous box appearing above the ground level , which serves as an entrance approach and as a study room with a roof terrace. Trees of local species are planted surrounding the box in multiple layers , and we hope to see the atmosphere of a castle within nature as those trees grow in the future.

"lnvisible House". Through our preliminary image , we finally decided the allocation of the house within the vast ground of 32;000 m. ln such case of a buried "lnvisible House" , the key issue to be inquired is not the superficial figurative element, but more fundamental spatial rightness. We conceived a labyrinthine space under the ground , whose configuration is ‘ invisible' to provide diverse spatial experiences by breaking preconceptions of everyday life. The building plan is a simple square based on a grid of7.2 m. Within such strict framework , we performed architectural manipulations under the theme of natural light , such as the variation of the f1 00r levels , the range of different types of

Chichu Art Museum Nα oshima， Kagawα

This is an underground museum built at the site in Naoshima , a small island f1 0ating at Seto 1nland Sea. Those works of three artists , impressionist Claude Monet , and contemporary artists Walter d 巳 Maria and J ames Turrell are housed as permanent exhibition The site is located at the top of a small hill with the remains of stepped salt fields , which is about 600 m west of an existing museum (Benesse House). We continued and pushed forward the previous scheme of distributing buildings in accordance with the topography to mai ntain the surrounding scenery, and we proposed a scheme that the entire building vol ume to be completely buried under the ground leve l. Along with the consideration to th 巳 scenic attraction of the salt field remains , we consciously thought of a theme of designing an underground building Firstly we pictured concrete void spaces underneath the ground in pure geometrical forms. Th 巳 complex is configured by a gallery wing and an entrance wing connected by a guttered exterior corridor , while each wing has a sunken court in an equilateral triangle shape and a square shap 巳 . 1t is the geometrical forms represented by the illuminated garden space of the sunken court to give an order to the configuration of the entire complex . The profiles of the void spaces are directly revealed at the ground surface. Because those are buried underground, inevitably the light is diminish时 ， the air is increased its density , and a ‘ darkness ' emerges. Then there is a stream of light coming into the darkness to illuminate and realize th巳 space-we intensively studied the volume and quality of the ‘ light' to give character for each space through the condition of light. The art space of each artist is woven into the modulation and rhythm produced by this ‘ ligh t' crossed with the geometrical forms. We intended the design of this building by the ‘ light' within a ‘ darkness' as the guiding ligh t. We collaborated with the artists and directors for planning those 3 art spaces As the project progressed from the meta , abstract and ideal stage to more concrete stage , we inevitably went through con f1 icts. However, we made attempts to find out the utmost tension between art and architecture through the dialogues without compromise , rather than to look for a compromised , predetermined proposal.

It is a new junior high school building replacing a decrepit one , which is located at Kaga city in Ishikawa prefecture. The whole complex is configured with a school wing in an oval plan , and an open community facility wing in a square plan , which is rotated in 30 degree and engaged with the school wing section. The school wing is in a hall configuration, which has an open space with a void ceiling in its longitudinal orientation, while the rooms are allocated on both sides of the open space in two stories along with the shape of the building exterior Skylights are distributed behind the ceiling louver at the upper part ofthis open space, and they always allow soft natural light to come down to this void ceiling space. This open space that all the classrooms are facing to is given a characteristic of "another classroom" beyond its original role of providing circulations , enabling an unconventional activities of students at 也is area. The fmish of both interior and exterior is unified by utilizing natural wood material一 the wall surfaces encircling spaces utilizes thinned cedar tree material. By enclosing the gentle shaped oval space with an expressive cedar wood material, we intended to provide a space producing spontaneous communication among students , or among students and teachers at the core space ofthis schoo l.

名作品 "Sakanouenokumo ( 山顶的 云彩) "有关的博物馆设计 。 博物馆 位于松山市爱暖县 中 部的 、山顶建有 松山城堡的城堡山脚下 。

This is the project of a museum , in connection with writer Ryotaro Shiba ' s well known piece of work , ‘ Sakanouenokumo (c loud over the top of a hill)'. The site is located at the foot of the castled mountain topped with Matsuyama Castle in the center of Matsuyama city , Ehime prefecture. At the northwest of the site , there is Bansui House built in Taisho period , (now Ehime Prefectural Provincial Art Museum) and another private house named ‘ Gudabutsu Herm卜 tage ' dismantled to be reconstructed at further depth of the property , in which the personage of the novel , Shiki Masaoka actually resided. For this particular site , which has a strong relationship with a local nature and history , we proposed a facility to maximize this endowed location by articulating the introverted nature of exhibition space and thè extraverted character of having vista to the surroundings The access to the site is provided by an approach not from tbe frontage road , but from the north side pedestrian trail going around Bansui House. The building reached by a slope is doubly configu red with a concrete core with 4 -story high in equi lateral triangular plan , and another glass box in the same triangular plan , which is combined three dimensionally with the core section. Two edges of the equilateral triangle are correctly positioned to the hem and ridge line of the castled mountain , and another edge facing to northwest side is positioned to the axial line heading from Bansui House , Gudabutsu Hermitage to Matsuyama Castle. Each floor consists of two types of spaces in different characters; one is a ‘ calm' space encircled by walls inside of the concrete core; another is an ‘ active' space inside of the glass box , which is thrust out toward northwest direction from the concrete core . A slope spirally goes around the periphery of the concrete core , and it gradually integrates those two spaces to produce a continuous exhibition spaces. At the top floor going the slope all the way up , there is a main exhibition room and a terrace space where visitors can overlook the surrounding scenery of the castled mountam.

During the cultural heritage site investigation of the site in our design phase， 由e remam of a pond within the territory of an old s缸nurai residence of Edo period was found Some part of the building was designed in piloti style to preserve the remain. The site is located in the suburb of Otsu city, Shiga prefecture , within an emerging housing area on an upland overlooking Biwa Lake. The house is for two family units of the client family and the client's mother In consideration of how its spatial configuration addresses the programmatic issues to hold two different generations within a house , and how it can realize an open living space taking the advantage of the site with great view , we suggested an image of a house to the client, which is to float over the hill taking a view of its surrounding scenery. The building is composed of two analogous trapezoidal volumes. Lower volume follows the site shape , while the upper volume sits on top of the lower volume with its four winds extended ou t. The lower volume is divided into 3 segments; the middle segment is provided as a void space; a private room for client's mother and th巳 circulation to the upper level are gathered in one segment; a common Japanese style room and a reading room are allocated in the other segment. In the upper level , 3 sides of the trapezoidal volume facing to the a句 acent lot are closed , while 1 side facing to Biwa Lake is open in full face . This space is to be utilized as a family room becoming the living core of this house The upper level provides an open and luminous space by the light and wind taken from the balcony extended horizontally in cantilever, while the lower level receives a gentle light and soft shade to produce a calm atmosphere through the deep eaves The periphery wall built in the stacked concrete blocks draws a moderate curve line , becoming a threshold separating the house 企om the surrounding sceneη

这一建筑位于大津市志贺县的郊 区，在山地上的新兴建筑区内，俯瞰

琵琶湖。这一建筑是为客户一家和客 户母亲一家建造的 。 考 虑到生口何运用空间结构解决在

同一个建筑里不同的两代人的居住问 题，以及如何实现 一个 能充分利用周

围景色的开放的起居室，我们向客户 提出了 一个 建筑图景，漂浮在山上尽 览周围的景色 。 这一建筑由两个类似的梯形结构 组成。

较低的结构沿着地形而建，而

较高的结构座落在较低结构的顶端，

它的四面窗户向外延伸 。

较低结构被

分成 三个 部分，中问部分是 一个无 效 的空间;客户母亲的私人空间和通向

更高 一 层的楼梯设在一部分;一个常 见的日本式房间和书房设在另一部分。 在较高一层，面向连接层的梯形结构 的三面都是封闭的，而面向琵琶湖的 一面则是完全开放的 。

将这一空间用

做家庭空间变成了这 一 建筑的居住核 心。 较高一层的空间开放又明亮，这 是为水平伸向外面的阳台带末的阳光

和微风而打造的 。

而较低一层因为有

较深的屋檐，则有了柔和的阳光和舒 缓的线条，形成一种平静的氛围 。 建 在堆叠的混凝土群里的外围墙形成了

一种 温和的曲线，成为 一个将 建筑与 周围环境相分离的门槛。

This is a facility for design exhibitions. 1t is built in the compound of ‘ Tokyo Midtown' , which was recently completed as a development project of the vacant lot produced after the relocation of former Defense Agency , in Roppongi , Minato-ku area. The project of ‘ 21_21 DES1GN S1GH T' had started by a project team led by 1ssei Miyake mapping out the project concept. From the schematic design phase in 2003 , the project then changed several times without settling neithers its program nor its building site , until starting the construction works in 2005 Eventually it was fixed as current scheme to build a facility housing two galleries within the open space full of greenery at the north west boundary of Tokyo Midtown. The most significant issue for the design was the restriction of the construction according to the building site designated as a public open space within the city planning projec t. Thus , the building design was to bury most of the building volume under the ground leve l. Through the design process based on the study of defining the relationship between the underground space and the above ground space , and the continuity of the building to the surrounding environment , we came up to a design concept of utilizing a single steel panel as a roo f. This was based on the piece of fabric concept invented by Miyake , the idea of producing various forms 企om a single piece of fabric in accordance with the individual physique condition. From the preliminary image of a single steel panel roof, the design progressed to the final scheme , with two floating steel panels of larger and smalerl size with one end of each panel folded to touch the grounds , following the site conditions in the Tokyo Midtown compound. The project schedule was extremely tight because of the technical difficulty of producing a 54 m long roof in a single steel panel , while the design conditions went through kaleidoscopic changes for time optimizing process. However, highly skilled and passionate craftsmen at the construction site made it possib le to complete this difficult projec t.

宅 一 生提出的，并由其旗下的 一 个项目团队 开始的 。 从 2003 年概妥团的形成阶段开始， 这一项目改变了好几次方案都没有得以确定 最终的项目方案和建筑地址，直到 2005 年， 建造工作才最终开始 。

最终，当前的建筑计划才被确定下来 : 建造 一 个能容纳两个画廊的设施。 该设施的 户外空间妥布满绿色植物 。 其西北方与东京 市中心区相才妥。 设计中最重妥的问题是，在城市规划过

程中，作为 一 个公共的开放空间，建筑过程 妥严格按照指定的建造场所要求来执行 。 因 此，建筑设计将大部分的建筑物都设计在地 下。

然而设计过程是基于对地下空间和地上 空间关系界定的研究，以及建筑与周围环境

的连续性，于是，我们想出用羊 一 的钢板来 做屋顶的设计概念。 这是基于 三 宅提出的构 造理念，用与个体形体条件相符合的羊 一 构 造才丁造出多种形式 。 从羊 一 铜板的初步图像开始，设计逐步

发展成最终的定稿 :一 大 一小 两块折叠相接 的钢板延伸到地面 。 这很符合东京市中心区 的场所条件 。 生产 一 块 54 米长的完整的铜板来做屋 顶，从技术 上 来说，是相当困难的 。 因此， 工期就变得非常紧张。 由于时间紧张，这使 得设计过程需妥最优化 。 而设计条件又不断 地发生着各种变化 。 然而，技艺高超又极富 热情的工匠们在这样的场地 上 却使这样艰难 的 一个工 程的完成成为了可能 。

This is a timber structure hotel built in Naoshima , a small island located at Seto lnland Sea. It was planned as a new annex of the ‘ Benesse H ouse (previously Naoshima Contemporary Art Museum)' , which was the complex with a museum and a hotel building completed in 1992 , to accommodate the increasing number of visitors who come to this island. The site is the intemational camp facility that became the starting point of the Naoshima Project of Benesse Corporation in a span of 20 years . Although it had been planned to demolish all the existing facilities

to cons廿uct new buildings at the early stage ofthis project, the plan was changed to reuse some of the existing building through renovation when the hotel program was set to provide in separate wings. In the end , we came up with the current scheme of distributing new Park wing and Beach wing across the preexisting , renovated wing. The buildings are constructed all in laminated wood except the basem巳nt level of the Park wing utilizing reinforced concrete. Each building is designed in a simple expression reflecting the roof truss s仕ucture to interior and exterior , while the interior

finish is also unified by the usage of Linden plywood. We were aware of the expression of a wood material with plainness and purity throughout the design processes.

直岛贝尼斯之屋

这是一座建于直岛地区的木结构旅 馆 。 直岛是一个坐落于 ;tßí 户内海的小岛 。

为了适应日益增长的未岛游客数量，该 旅馆是作为‘贝尼斯之屋(原先叫做直 岛当代艺术博物馆)

，的新的附力口物而

建的 。 1992 年，博物馆和旅馆相结合 的综合设施才完成 。 这一位 直 是 一 处国际 露营 地，是贝 尼斯公司为时 20 年的直岛工程的起点 。 贝尼斯公司原本打 算 拆除所有设施，在 工程的早期建立一些新建筑 。 但是，最 终，公司改变了计划，决定对一些现有 建筑进行翻新再利用 。 将旅馆项目设在

两 翼。 最终，我们提出目前的设计计划， 对新公园 其 和海岸 翼 进行先存和翻新分 自己 。

这些建筑物都是用薄木板建造而成 的。

只有公园 真 的地下室走用混凝土加

固的 。 每一栋建筑都采用了很简单的设 计 。 设计的目的在于能将屋顶的架构反

映到建筑的内部和外部 。

而建筑的内部

装饰也是统一采用极木夫板。 在整个设 计过程中，我们很重视木材的尤滑和纯 净程度。

A project celebrating the University of Tokyo's 130th anniversary , consisting of a school facility that incorporates a 200-seat theate r. Located in the western section of the campus in a greenbelt area along Hongo Street that continues from Akamon (red gate) , the site is a narrow strip of land 100 m wide and 15 m deep . Facing Hongo Street is the thick green grove of gorgeous camphor trees that are over 100 years old and 30 m high , softly s巳parating the campus 仕om the town Here , the goal was set to follow the si te' s character of a buffer zone and to create a new public space that takes advantage ofthe site ' s linear geometry. The building involves keeping maximum space skirting around the existing trees to bury a double -height basem巳 nt f1 00 r. Half of it will be a volume accommodating necessary functions , while the other half is to become a tiered open space. The height is kept low enough so as not to obstruct the existing sight of green camphor trees , and as to the consequent overground facade its overall proportions were determined with reference to Sanjusangen-do , a temple in Kyoto which has an equally wide frontage . Along the border with the street inside the campus , a concrete wall stands parallel to the building. It serves not only as a field barrier , but is also intended to create a ‘ distance' that connects the extensive underground space behind the wall to the existing university space.

This is a project to relocate To问ru Toyoko Line's Shibuya Station in Shibuya area , Tokyo to below ground level at 30 m. It is planned that the new station will have the mutual entries of Tokyo Metro Sub Civic Line and Tokyu Toyoko Line. It is intended in this project that the station will become not only just a passing point station , but also as an underground landmark of Shibuya, which is the cultural transmission center of the metropolis

Tokyo. Based on our image of a new station as a spaceship = hypogenous ship floating deep under the ground , we d 巳 signed a nest巳 d configuration, inserting a completely different shaped stat ion house into a concrete skeletal frame constructed in a civil engineering work . The core of this configuration is produced by a void ceiling space piercing the underground building frame , and an egg shaped shell placed to enclose the void ceiling space. The void ceiling represented in an oval shaped plan penetrates from the platform at the 5th basement level to the concourse at the 2nd basement leve l. Furthermore , the curved surface of a shell produced by the 位勾 ectory of the rotated oblong enables to achieve dramatic and symbolic spatial sequences appropriate to the gate of this city. This configuration of the void ceiling and the egg shaped shell also effectively functions for the natural ventilation and the radiation cooling/heating system , contributing to reduce the environmental load of the urban infrastructure.

Abu Dhabi , the capital city of UAE , officially announced the development project of Saadiyat offshore island in January , 2007. It is a project intended to provide a "Cultural Island" with naturalistic and cultural environment , and its core cultural district is made up with 5 cultural facilities such as a museum and a theate r. Frank O. Gehry , Jean Nouvel , Zaha Hadid and we wiII participate as designers. Our team is assigned to design a maritime museum to introduce the local culture of Abu Dhabi. Because of the characteristic of this project, it is expected to reflect some kind of symbolism derived from this particular place to the newly developed building. In response , we suggested a building plan in a stoic fo口同 it is comprised of a rectan♂llar volume with hollowed out , shell -liked formed void reflecting a sail line filled out of sea breeze When its form is seen by itself, it is no more than a simple , geometrical objec t. However , when it is floated over the seashore of Saadiyat Island encircling the sea water , the void space enveloped by a gentle curved surface wiII become a device to pull in the sublime seascape into the building. The inside of the building reflects the image of the exterior, providing a dynamic , ship-bottom like space. The eno口nous blow up void space floats the floors in various levels with slopes circulating among them, producing a three dimensional spatial configuration The bottom of the sea floor beneath the building is dug down in the mirrored form of the upper ground volume bounded at the water surface. Visitors can see this enormous aquarium from the ground floor lobby space. The government of Abu Dhabi accepted the architectural concept of formless building derived from natural activities and the environment , and the project began to move forward to be opened in the year 2012

此项目意在呈现一个兼备 自然风尤和文化韵味的"文化岛屿" 。

其中心文化区由五个文化设施组成，其

中包括一个博物馆和一个影院 。 以及 Frank

成建筑水上部分的倒彰的形状。 游客可 以在底层的大斤参观这个巨大的水族

馆。 阿布扎比政府接受了这个不拘形式 且充分体现自然和环 境特点的建筑概

念。

这个项目得以进行且预计于 2012

年竣工 。

这是东急大井叮线车站上野毛主占升级及扩

横穿上野毛街。

建车站过的 一个计划 。 铁轨将扩大四倍，

This is the project for upgrading and expanding the station house of Tokyu Oimachi Line's Kaminoge Station as the tracks wiU be quadrupled , requiring the expansion of the track area. The plan also updates the station area as a barrier free zone , making it accessible for anyone. At Kaminoge Station , its platform is located at the engraved ground level , and Kaminoge Street branched 企om the Kanio8 Line is crossing above the platform. Taking the advantage of this existing condition, we suggested a scheme produ-cing an artificial ground at the Kaminoge Street level over the station platfon丑， doubling as a roof for the platform area. Those tenant shops and bus station designed as a "station plaza" will be grouped and dis位ibuted on this newly placed artificial ground. The new station house appearing above the ground level is composed with a volume allocated across 也e Kaminoge Street, while a large roof is covering the entire 缸ea of the station volume and the s位eet. On the north side facing toward Futakotamagawa Station houses ticketing gates , nursery and bicycle parking , and on the south side toward Todoroki Station includes ticketing gates , station operation offices and tenant shops. The stat:t on squ缸e with a bus station is allocated at the area in 企ont of Kaminoge Street, to which those two station volumes are facing. By enclosing those facilities and programs by a single large roof, various circulations of pedestrians , bicycles , cars , buses and trains will be articulated and integrated under this roof, while 臼 significant roof design will be a unique symbol of the neighboring local 缸ea.
