..generally the prob lem has b een of technical folks thinking BA as a career progression with somewhere the feeling that as one progress one does less of technology and more of b usiness. This makes them treat BAs as competitors...

I absolutely agree. What I found peculiar in my experience was that I began in production support, spent time as a report developer and data analyst and then moved in to a technical BA role. As soon as my job description read "business analyst" the same people that I had worked with over the years began to exclude me -

Since BAs are the b ridge b etween b usiness and IT - their ownership b ecomes an issue in any project - if IT owns them with all the prejudices which I mentioned then b usiness feels them as technical resources hardly adding any extra value and similarly if b usiness owns then IT shuns them off as foreign..

This captures the situation so precisely I can't think of any comment to make. On the IT side, if a business got the chance to know me they were happy (I was eventually "stolen" from IT by my the client.) Otherwise, they felt that the BA role was there to add another layer of billing to their project and that there would be minimal value. Now that I'm on the business side IT can't shut me out but I am viewed with suspicion. ..I think b oth of the issues can b e solved b y making a distinction in the market b etween IT oriented b usiness analyst and domain oriented b usiness analyst (call each something else)..

I'm not sure this will completely resolve the situation. If I didn't have the IT experience I wouldn't have been able to walk into my current role and be as comfortable as I am so quickly. It was my prior role in business that led me to IT because I thought technology had the answers to just about any business question and problem. I think individuals working in the role of BA on both the IT side and business side have a unique opportunity to define and develop the role. We have the unique ability to "step outside and look in". We are not married to any particular technology, theory or methodology. We bring with us both business and technological experience and are open to learning from one another. We need to look within and to understand, as individuals, where we can provide the most value using our unique backgrounds. We need to approach each situation in a neutral fashion. We're the diplomats and the translators and we are in one of the best positions to actively participate in the creation of new and exciting cutting edge solutions. In many corporations, a business analyst would be a demotion and is tiered lower than Junior Developer. Some people also think that business analysts simply write documentation / specifications all day... http://blogs.ittoolbox.com/eai/leadership Vineet Agarw al Apr 6, 2005

Business Analyst. Hmm, these are people who understand requirements and give possible solutions. They also are critical in changing the way the client business is done. They dictate most of the solution. Coming on to the Technical side. They define the functional requirements for the application. Developers follow these requirements. Testing/quality is sometimes done by these analyst. If they do not pass the software it is not deliverd. Many times commercial issues are also handled through Business Analyst. Feel that companies who do not give importance to Documentation or give low priority to these analyst will only suffer in the long run. IT solutions if not coupled with quality documents sometimes do not find a place with companies like Toshiba, Marks and Spencer. These are big names and u need good analysts to get into these and maintain the account. Unknow n User Apr 22, 2005

Is the role of a Business Analyst better than a pre sales person, in IT industry? Unknow n User Jun 20, 2006

Hi, It was a very healthy discussion till now,i have some queries if somebody can help me out. I have been in the software industry since last one year.I entered as a tester, promoted to software development, currently my role in the company is same as that of a Business Analyst but my designation is still a software developer. Will this have any impact in future when i plan to shift to any other company for a business analyst post? With respect to my job i have sound knowledge of all the key roles played by a business analyst and am performing the same in the company. The role is coordinating the project bridging up the gap between the client and developer including all the steps starting from requirement gathering to sign-off. Unknow n User Jul 17, 2006

It’s a good question which triggers different thoughts from everyone. Being a business analyst in a software firm, I would like to share my knowledge about the role of Business Analyst in the software Industry. Business Analyst Roles: -> BA is the one who involves in gathering Business Requirement from clients. -> BA though not having a good insight into technical knowledge in analyzing which technology can solve the business needs of the clients. He should be aware of various different technologies and updates. -> BA and Technical Architect should interact with the clients. Project Manager if needed can join in the client meeting. -> BA should prepare the Business Requirement Document (BRD), Use Case Document (UCD), Use Case Diagram, User Scenario Document (USD) and Test Cases. -> BA should interact with Project Manager, Software Developers and QA team consistently to meet the Business Requirements. -> BA should interact with testing team and clarify their doubts regarding any issues in testing against the requirements. BA should review the test case and test results of QA team. -> BA should able to communicate and present the demo of the entire application. -> BA should maintain the entire documentation of the project. He is responsible for maintaining the organization internal repository for the assigned project. > In this present era, there is no such profile called System Analyst, they are called as Business Analyst. Business Analyst should have excellent communication skill, excellent documentation and writing skill. He should be good in converting the business needs of the clients into Business Requirements. He doesn’t need to be a tech savvy, but he should be good in merging the business needs with the right technology. He needs to provide the right solutions with the cutting edge technology to the business needs at the right time. Unknow n User Jul 18, 2006

the responsibility to analyse the business processes ( all ) and make / provide / helps in making decissions. this job is very challanging. A business analyst has the responsibility to analyse the work done, requirements, challenges faced, ethics, of the organization and according to which he made decissions. Unknow n User Aug 2, 2006

I have read a lot on this thread about the differences between SAs and BAs. I would be curious to hear peoples views on the differences that a Testers role brings. Unknow n User Aug 8, 2006

I am currently going through the transition from straight IT to BA with IT bias. Only recently have I found that the BA role encompasses everything I already do. I appreciate the point that IT would potentially stray away from me now given the fact there is no mention of "IT" in my title. However the distinction in my place of work is between the two roles is clear due to the fact that our IT dept is now purely support based and will act as a resource when needed. Our goal is to bridge the gap between the techies and business thinkers, this goal will be accomplished, I feel, when I step into the BA role. Comparing this role to things like junior developers and alike is completely unreasonable as the jobs are clearly different. The BA is 'gifted' with multiple skills including people management, project management and valuable IT skills to name but a few. This role can only improve projects and will be an integral cog in the development machine! Unknow n User Aug 9, 2006

I would see Business Analyst as a composite role, though there are no hard or soft boundaries. Most BAs are a. Having a good understanding on the business domain. b. Having the ability to convert 'one-liner' business requirements into a consise set of requirements that can be easily understood by your [IT] team. c. Having the 'skills' required to project your team as if they are 'the team' for your client's needs. d. Addressing and managing issues reported by clients and your [IT] team on time without compromising net profit to stakeholders. e. Having a positive and patient mindset to assist your clients in validating the solutions that your [IT] team has offered. Most of my client representatives are not IT specialists and hence I really have to go an extra mile to deliver my [IT] team's solutions. Typically, BAs get to start early on a project and will be last to exit the project. Unknow n User Aug 18, 2006

Business Analysts are the people who are b ridging the gap b etween Technical People and the b usiness people from the client side. Hence, they need knowledge at b oth ends; Technology and Business Domain. Clients want some person who can understnd their

business problem and solve it with the technology. A sheer technical guy will execute the solution but he won't be able to prove business rationale for that. Business Analyst may redefine the solution because he understands major business problem and may come out with a redical solution which is different from the earlier one. This position of Business Analyst opens carrer path in both sides; Project Management and Consulting & Solution. A natural career path would b e into Consulting Stream. Unknow n User Aug 26, 2006

Hello all, I am in training for a BA position in an IT firm. From my training for the past 2 week, I have come to realize that BAs four most important role are: 1. gather requirements and communicate effectively and efficiently to staekholders and users 2. understanding of what systems can and cannot do. 3. dentifying what data the business currently has, what data need to be carried over into the new systems and/or analysis around what can be achieved with a new system. 4. do feasibility tests - how realistic the requirements are in terms of effort, time, costs. Challenges for BA: 1. Communication with stakeholders 2. Fluid requirements 3. Vague business people 4. Scope creep 5. Wide variety of people from different backgrounds. 6. Limited access to SMEs Sunil Unknow n User Aug 26, 2006

A Business Analyst in the past is someone who has come from the business side. The system analyst in comparison is someone who has come from the IT arena. The Business Systems Analyst in my experience is someone who brings both skills and experience together to provide a higher level of value to the organization. Over time, this role has envolved into the title of Business Analyst. I have worked with variuos people who have varying degrees of talent where some can only write business requirements and not functional specifictions or business or systems modeling. A true BA can sort through the chaos and ambiguity of what is told to them by many people and extract a concise description of the business. Works with business users and IT professionals as a business and somewhat technical problem solver. They act as a liaison between the technical and business worlds. Is capable of analyzing the business to identify problems and/or opportunities and to define solution characteristics. The posts and comments have been great! They also show that in practice people with the title of Business Analyst have slightly different roles, are in different parts of organizations, and have varying views of where the BA fits in the heirarchy. Like David Wright, I urge you all to get involved in the International Institute of Business Analysis (IIBA). Go to www.iiba.com for more info. The vision and mission of the IIBA is as follows: Vision: The world's leading association for Business Analysis professionals” Mission: To develop and maintain standards for the practice of business analysis and for the certification of its practitioners I also urge you to view the Business Analyst Blog at http://www.b2ttraining.com/page/business-analyst-blog. Hi all, I want to become BA. but i don't know in which areas i have to be strong Unknow n User Sep 28, 2006

Hi Every one, Well have seen a lot of Comments on Business Analyst, Good and Entertaining. Working as Business Analyst is not so easy as one things. and they are not people who just simply make documentations, Then what are technical Writers and Copy Editiors called and what are thier profile in IT industry? Co relating betwen the Business Development Executive and Programers and the clients is not as easy jobs. The profile must seem to be easy to take up, but not every one can handle this profession. This profession to say frankly does not develop from IT Qualities developed from education, rather it is developed from inner qualities of human. One has to be a keen learner, Observer, Humbe, Understanding and passionate enough to take up this profession. If a programmer makes a mistake , well just a QC process is enough to change it or rectify it. Well if a BA makes a mistake, there are also changes of loosing the project for the company. More over all jobs are respected, As long as we dont rob money for our living. Keep moving.... Be positive Gob bless you all. Thanks and Regards, Srinivasan Senthil. Unknow n User Oct 1, 2006

Amit - I'm sorry but I do not know what a business implementer does in your case. As far as development vs. analyst. I would say that development is a good background for an analyst and in some cases it is much easier to be a developer than an analyst reason being is because everyone knows what a developer is supposed to do - being an analyst can be frustrating because we can fill many roles under different circumstances. I hope that helps somewhat. Perhaps someone else out here will have another "take" on the subject for you. Unknow n User Oct 9, 2006

Phil's story... My background starts in technology and it's still where my interests largely remains now. I’ve been though the beginning of microcomputers and the clunky punch-card world of mainframes, from Basic and C+ programming to IT management, the science of bar code and RFID systems, and Systems Analysis to Project Management. But its when l moved into Solution Sales that my all technical experience was really put into context and faced up to the issues of commercial value. Harsh lessons were learnt understanding that professionally packaged technology with a zillion features counts for nought if benefits and services are not transparent and measurable. After reasonable sales success, l knew that l had to influence greater value in systems solutions, hence a move to Business Analysis where l now bridge the gap between business process requirements that constantly strive for profit and the technology systems that exist to support that goal. And l now emphasise with both worlds and derive a greater personal satisfaction because of it. Best, Phil Unknow n User Oct 10, 2006

Role of a Business Analyst (BA) is very challenging and sometimes little bit confusing. BA should have business as well as technology expertise. However, at times he may have work more oriented towards single expertise. BAs can enhance organization goodwill by leveraging their domain expertise in the form of Thought Leadership, White Papers etc. Unknow n User Dec 4, 2006

Been reading the posts with interest... here's my take on a true BA role: A BA not only defines and clarifies a specific business function (or set of functions) but should have the knowledge and credibility with the business to interogate business processes and logic to deliver an analysis that respresents best practice for the business, now and going forward. In other words, a business analyst sould have the experience and process analysis knowledge to help the business map the best process - ideally a BA should be an Industrial Engineer or have some O&M or Workstudy background. The current firm link that we see between BA and IT has only come about over the last 15 years or so as the lines between defining process and creating IT applications to suit became more blurred. And this is the essential difference between a BA and a systems analyst (SA). An SA does not query the business logic or best practice but converts the processes defined into a solution design and therefore the SA sits more firmly in the IT camp. All in all, these and other roles form an integral part of the delivery of a full Enterprise Architecture that an organisation may be looking to deploy. Unknow n User Dec 11, 2006

I am a Business Systems Analyst III and I get mental blocks often. It drives me nuts when I cannot be a more effective writer.....I keep thinking my audience is just a development world but I also have to think about the Business Units needs as well. I have a hard time writing for the end user. I know practice makes perfect but it is not helping me these past few weeks. Any tips?? Thanks. H M Winning Dec 28, 2006

A far as writing for the end user - I'm no expert but I find that it helps to sit down and think about how you would explain something in person to someone. If you have a friend or coworker who has some time - try your explanation out on them in person. I've found that adopting a conversational tone in writing along with step by step descriptions accompanied by screen prints can be effective. From my experience most people get frustrated with manuals etc. that are too complex. The end user doesn't care how things are done in th background they just want to know what to do to make things quick and easy for them. Hope that helps out. Unknow n User Dec 28, 2006

Greetings all who may still get these notifications - Since ending my postings I've still received comments mostly concerning the posts regarding the role of a business analyst. For those who may be interested I've decided to begin postings again after the new year focusing on what I think are some of the most effective roles a BA can play and how a BA can move forward to a more strategic position in their environment. In short the posts will be light on the technology side and heavier on the business side. If you have any thoughts, questions or topics that you would like to discuss in this forum please post a comment and I will collect them for future discussions. See you in the new year and thanks for the comments! HM Unknow n User Jan 3, 2007

I have done ND Computer Systems Engineering and currently doing IT Support I need to do IT Business Analysis as it is my interest now,how best can you help me to get more info regarding the business analyst? What instituitions do offer such training in South Africa? Unknow n User Jan 8, 2007

In any project PM is responsible for the project, Architect is responsible for the design, Tester owns quality, BA is responsible for requirements (which form basis for anything in the project). To get those requirements, BA needs to be experienced in lot of things like domain, technology, communication etc which are pretty much covered in detailed in this thread above. Hi everyone, I have IT experience of about 1 yr, currently i am in my first job as a developer working in java. I want to shift my job description to Business Analyst, so I need some suggestions form all of you,..like where can I start from and what all things i need to consider before I look out for jobs as BA. Peter Tran Jan 10, 2007

Durga, A good start would be to understand fully the job roles/responsibilites and descriptions of a BA and what it takes to become a good BA. Do some research on business analysis a good start would be on http://www.iiba.com/. Once you've decided I guess secondly is to do a bit of career planning and objectives, on how you go about achieving your goal to become a BA. BA's have a wide range of diversiteis from being a 'subject matter expert' (SME) knowing the business, from presales, post sales, consulting, technical side etc. There are endless opportunities and depending what you like to focus on your area of expertise. BA's need to be good communicators, so you may need to network around your colleagues. The Project Managers (PM's), Business Managers and Team Leads/Managers, look for opportunities to shift you towards your goals in your particular area. I hope that helps. Hi, Upon understanding the roles performed by the BA I can comment on saying that there are different types of BA in the industry. One into SDLC - BA (most often called SA) One into Presales - BA (Process Consulting) One into KPO - BA (Data Analysis) further there can be many classifications. But the common activity performed by BA in all the cases is Requirement Gathering; after which the role can involve in Proposal Making, SRS/FRS etc doc, Data Patterns and so on. Hi, I have been interviewing for a business analyst job in a software company and would like to know what software business analysts need to use in their jobs. Also, what would the first day on the job be like? What would they have me do first? Do companies usually provide some training. They seem to be interested in giving me the job. I have a B.S. in Math. Can anyone suggest good websites and books in order to prepare for this business analyst job. Thanks, Tim Unknow n User Jan 13, 2007

Is anyone here a business analyst dealing with statistical software like SAS? And if so, could you give me some idea of what you do on an average day and what the company expects of you? Also, would a SAS programmer get paid more than a Business Analyst? Which job option would you more likely get promoted? What degrees do most Business Analysts have? Any help would be greatly appreciated. -lara Unknow n User Jan 15, 2007

Very good subject and lot of people have very valid points. Role of BA can be vary from company to company, industry to industry and it can also vary within a company also. I have not seen there is any specific or one job description that fits the BA job description. Although BA's traditionally have come from business or domain or some one with functional with testing background. Companies have realized this model has pro's and cons. So they started looking for people with technical background (BSA, Technical BSA) with some functional experience and move them into these roles. As the industry itself is redefining and as the companies trying to cut the costs down. The bridge is getting narrowed down. Some companies are already doing this. In my judgement BA/BSA/Tech BSA roles itself will shrink down the road and it will also add Project management to this category. Unknow n User Jan 19, 2007

Yes, i agree with this totally. Infact adding a few more thoughts in this, it is the business background that Domain specialists like Business Analysts have to

business background that Domain specialists like Business Analysts have to understand and explain to the techies on what backdrop the technology is going to be carved and plugged into various strings. For example Banking related items like Loan processing, credit card payments, bill payments are the business process for which technology has to explore how easily these process can be mechanised or automated without resorting to manual processing. A combination of these is what the customer would benefit when he walks into a bank. Hence Business related analysts and technology related analysts are like two wheels in a cart of business. Kudos, to all the queries and answers, by asking questions others with similar queries will benefit from you guys. I have a question myself, I am currently being offered 2 positions, a PM and BA. The BA's salary package offer is better that PM's. Which should I go for? Thanks. bn venki Jan 27, 2007

Hi everyone, Thank god I found this site. There's a lot of great information. Being a Business Analyst has always been my dream. I hope you guys can give me some pointers. I recently graduated from the University of Waterloo in Canada. I have a bachelor degree in computers science and a masters degree in management science. I love IT and technology. What I love more is the business side of things, working with people, doing presentations, surveys, interviews, data analysis. I have had a few part time jobs in IT support in the past. I am currently working full time in a software company as client support. I am not sure how to break into a Business Analyst position. Is a certain number of years of experience required? I am very interesting in a Business Analyst certification course offered at University of Califorinia Irvine Extension. http://unex.uci.edu/certificates/business_mgmt/business_analyst/ Will this be useful at all? What education should I pursue? What certifications or training should I take? What are the best jobs to have before being a business analyst? Any input from you experts would be really appreciated! Thank you Sincerely, Philip Chau Unknow n User Jan 30, 2007

It is very interesting to me : this conversation about everyone wanting to be a Business Analyst. Some wanting to know make it sound way more complex than it really is. I have been doing a combination of QA\Business Analyst work for the past 8 years. Look if you want to be a BA start by looking at some of the requirements see if u can obtain some of those skills in your current job and some others u can learn by reading or taking a class. It really is a leadership position and takes a lot of initiative. Unknow n User Feb 7, 2007

I really liked this discussion thread for the most part. It's great to see so many people intrested in what a BA is and where they sit in the organisation. Piyush, I wish there was an easy answer. I would check into the IIBA, www.theiiba.org. You can download and read, maybe skim, through the BA Body of Knowledge (BABOK). It covers the knowledge, tasks, skills, and techniques that a BA should have experience with or at least be familiar with. From there you may want to see what pieces of the BABOK your company's BAs are using. Then search out reference material in those areas. You can also find endorsed education providers that offer training in the areas you need to be an excellent BA in your organization. I hope that helps. Kupe Unknow n User Feb 14, 2007

Hi all: To start a BA career, you may want to check out these resources. There is an online course being offered by inquestra.com, on BA. Its $400.00 USD CD or $300.00 USD online access. Its both audio and video course. Very helpful indeed. Join the IIBA and attend your chapter meetings - a lot to learn from there. What it takes to make a complete BA is to possess a variety of hard skills which includes specification writing, understanding the basics and design of technology and a whole lot of soft skills like analytical and presentation skill and the most important one is creativity. I have been designated as BA just a few days back. Since I have been working as System analyst/tech specialist for past 8 years and working with BA's to understand business requirement and in smooth delivery of the service or product, I am aware what role BA is performing in each phase of the project. I think BA a should have clear understanding of the business domain and about the particular system, its architecure and how each modules in the system are interacting with each other.

with each other. BA should be able to understand if any change request is proposed in existing system so which part of the business it exaclty affecting and suggest a optimum solution for the change request. BA act as bridge between technical Team and business stakeholders. vishalbhatia Apr 3, 2007

Hello Friends, This is one fantastic blog about Business Analysts. It brings me closer to my aspirations to be a Business Analyst. I have about 6 years of experience in Software, First three years in Web based application development and since last 3 years in Telecom. Since last one year I have been in to Requirements management. Gathering requirements, documenting them, communicating to development team and coordinating between developers and customer during ATP stage. But I do not have the designation as "Business Analyst". My major concern has been, the domain for me to choose. Anywhere I see, Business Analysts are mainly taken for Financian Software with Finanance background. I have some concerns: 1. Are there any other domains that employ Business Analyst: I was intersted more in domains that I can Join after having the experience described above. 2. Hi Janaki, When I say business centric it typically means that we should rely on you domain knowledge more than your technology skills. I had seen people worrying about the fact that they donot know Java or SQL or anything and afraid to become a Business Analyst. Be more aware of the your subject, its practice, its intricacies, process flows etc. Because you may keep on working on different projects using different technology but the domain language will always hold good and carry you a long way to rise in your career. Why Business Analysis goes closely with Project Management The difference between Business Analyst and Systems Analyst Working with users The importance of IT business analysis

Craig Brow n Apr 28, 2007

Hi KVL The business process analyis is a flavour of business analyst. So is a systems analyst. So is an enterprise analyst. One of the problems with the job title BA is it's vagueness. Often within larger organisations the BA and BPA are differentiate for politicl reasons rather than based upon what the workers need to do. In some cases this leads to a perspective of "That's not my job" as one type of BA disclaims tasks they think another should do. This is yet another reason why projects have problems. Whichever role you work in recognise that there should be no hard boundaries between types of BAs and in fact you are (or should be) all working towards the same goals in a collaborative fashion. How to do this? Sit dwn at the beginning of a project or reationship and talk about how to manage these boundary areas. Cheers Craig Brown Better Projects blog

As the CIO of General Motors said during an interview with Gartner, to protect the long term viability of someone entering the IT field, one must have a total business sense, versus just technology alone. In a way, business analyst in the IT context have great progression if one looks at the traditional silo performance view of each LOB, compared to analyst now, who are exposed to various business processes in different LOB, their role being undertaking BPR, identifying business and IT opportunities, to name a few. Besides having transferrable skills (IT), BA possess domain/company specific process and business knowledege that is unique. However, like some said above, whether such role of BA can be harness depends on the existing structure of the company, their culture and their take on BA definition, as some use BA/ SA interchangeably, with misleading job description... I have one interview coming up next week and would like to get some tip. Even if I haven’t done formal requirement / BA type of work, I did write specs and gathered requirements which I mostly had to deliver the coding or the fixing myself. In my first round of interview, I was asked how I would go about gathering and analyzing needs. I simply said interviewing and communicating with the user/requester. I had a sense he was expecting a better answer. My general understanding of BA for the most part is to write requirement. Of course they may take other roles as needed. Hi Bhoo The IIBA has a certification but it's new and you certainly don't need it to get a job. What you need to develop is good communication and consulting skills, and n understanding of the requirements lifecycle. There are plenty of resources around to talk you through these things. The IIBA website is a good start - have a look at their BABOK which is all about techniques for managing requirements. As fr the comms/consulting skills you can browse the blogosphere, but I also recommend talking to your manager and clients today and ask for their advice. Good luck BetterProjects Blog

I know they have multiple offices in India and in South Africa as well. Their classes include: Principles of BA, Crafting High Quality Requirements, Verifying and Validating the Solution, BA Leadership, BA Meetings Toolbox, Project Management Skills for BAs and Value Driven Portfolio Management. I think they might have some USE Case workshop as well, I'm not sure. Hope this helps. Peter McHannigan Jun 4, 2007

I spent 11 years at Varsity before I entered the workplace and now I am involved in recruiting Business and Technical Analysts. I can assure you that qualifications are only a very basic starting point to getting a job. A lot of what is required is learnt through practical experience. A growing number of organisations are developing their own BA development programs so that they can get BAs to do exactly what they want them to do. What we do when we recruit BAs is to look for core attributes of an analyst (for example, can they facilitate discussion, problem solve and draw conclusions, write clearly and consicely, etc) and then we train our new analysts. We have found that 'experienced' analysts have been more of a burden. So in summary, focus on the core attributes of an analyst in the first case (you can find a full list of these via a the IIBA site or a Google search), then go for on-the-job training, and if you absolutely have to pursue external / generic training go for something that is well recognised. Cheers, Peter. Unknow n User Jun 12, 2007

I am working as a BA for last 4 yrs and wanted to know whether we have any forums where the BA can get involved for increasing the knowledge , like the Technical people has for upgrading their technical skills for reamining as competitors in the industry.... Chavan Unknow n User Jun 12, 2007

Someone who has the ability to observe, understand and communicate the business requirements is a business analyst. I have seen technical people become BAs while others scale up into the role of an architect or PM. Good thread of comments though. Shailaja BFSIForums.com - The Online Community for the Banking, Financial Services and the Insurance industry Abhishek Kashyap Jun 13, 2007

Still I have the concern of a clear demarkation of BA role in the IT industry. It is quite a new role and is still not recognized in IT industry. Shailaja, do you mean to say that BAs are equivalent to PM? Thanks, Abhishek Unknow n User Jun 13, 2007

The value and importance of the BA is clearly recognized by the IT industry. Just take a look at the number of Business Analyst job postings. What makes things difficult is the fact that organizations use the "Business Analyst" job title to represent a very wide range of roles and competencies. I have interviewed BAs which have only worked on the business side (never on an IT project) and I have interviewed BAs whose only responsibility was to create functional specifications.

Actually software solution is followed by management solution. The BA main role should to see the system (or business) from management solution point of view. A person can give management solution only who knows the system very well or understand the system ins and out. So I think BA should have the knowledge of IT and management both with experience. Thanks Mahabub Alam Unknow n User Jun 14, 2007

I would agree that the value of a BA is not as widely recognized in IT as on the business side which is one reason that I left IT. I find I have much more latitude, am exposed to more critical areas and am valued for the combination of my technological and business knowledge. For me, the ability to perform higher level analysis and work to align IT with the business vision is what it's all about. Everyone has their own niche but I think it's a mistake to think that BA's aren't valued or that you need to be stuck writing requirements documents as the epitome of a BA career. I would say that if you're not seeing what you want on the IT side, at least take a look on the business side. Unknow n User Jun 28, 2007

Hi, I am a software professional with 6 years industry experience and was into core technical side. I was on a break for last 2 yrs and now I would like to diversify as a business analyst. But all I am getting are the calls to total tech jobs again. I am based in Bangalore. Can somebody suggest a good place that can offer a course on Business Analysis? Would this be a better way of getting to the industry as a business analyst? Unknow n User Jul 2, 2007

You may contact International Institute for Learning, which is in Banglore. Regarding you query whether this would be a better way, all i can say is this would definitely give weight to your cv. But as already discussed, what you need is the combination of domain knowledge( which means the practical side of business) and technical know-how. With this course you would be able to have the fundamentals atleast All the best! Viki Jul 2, 2007

Hi Kavi, If you can, go for the Business Analyst role as it will put you in a better position for future career growth. While communication skills are very important for the BA, not all analysis are master communicators. My advice to you would be to improve your communication skills. Maybe you should consider a systems analyst role while you work on your communication skills. Best of luck! - Adrian Random Thoughts of an Analysis Manager

Business analyst for 10 years now and love what I do. I have worked in many industries including Insurance, banking, financial services, health care, oil and gas and a few others. My main role has always been about bridging the gap between IT and the business. I like to think of the role as a translator. You need to be able to speak geek as well as speak business. Its a fun and challenging job. You are always learning new things, teaching the business about technology and the IT team about the business. Communication and relationship management are essential skills. I write more about it here => http://www.freshtech.ca Unknow n User Aug 13, 2007

Though i have been reading all about the roles and reponsibilites a BA holds I havent been able to figure out myself being given those reponsibilites in near future. I feel Indian IT companies(except top two) are not doing justice to the role a BA plays in their organization. I dont know if I am right or wrong while making this statement. Or it might be the fact that these IT companies are unable to adopt the new joinees in the role of BA straightaway. I am really confused and unable to figure out wehere i would be in the coming future(nest 2 or 3 years). Hi Glen, One of the main challenges faced by business analysts is the relatively new state of the profession. Most organizations do not have clearly defined roles, responsibilities, methods, and tools for the business analysts. Most organizations should try to find an experienced practitioner (or a consulting firm) and slowly build the business analysis discipline within that organization. Since you are new to the profession, try to find an experienced analyst in your company and ask them to mentor you. In addition, try to read and learn as much as you can about the tools and techniques used by analysts. Hello Friends, This is one good discussion about BA. Going through discussion, I realised that what I am doing is exactly what I wanted to do and that what I am diong is nothing but a Business Analysts job. My current designation is not Business Analyst. I just wanted to share my BA experience. I have been working in Telecom Domain since last 3.5 years. (Total 6.5 years exp) Since last 1.5 years, I have been working in User Interface team. This is basically our Requirements team. But in our company it is never addressed as a Requirements team. It is always TREATED as a User Interface team. And truly the tyechnical aspects are relatively less in our team. The development team involves in gathering the technical aspects of the project. But before joining the User Interface team, I worked as test engineer, SQA engineer , Developer and Clearcase Administrator. So my technical knowledge is farely good compared to others in my team. Certainly this is heling in understanding developers reasons as to why they canot implement a certain feature OR to ask them why a certain feature is not possible to implement. Recently a Software PL, yelled at me, "Do it if you can show me" I said, "Give it to me, I will do it and show you". He had to accept the requirement. As part of my job, I gather requirements of mobile handsets. Basically the scenarios of various features. (Feature to be included are decided by the product development team, which basically includes Marketting people.) I discuss with the Mobile operators for the requirements of the software and document them for the development team. I act as a mediator between development team and the Mobile operators for finalising the behavior or scenario. Till this year May, I was working in our Head Quarter, in its full fledged User Interface team. It was good to be working in a Team. But in May I returned to my Country's branch office and I have been working alone here as a User Interface team member since then. While coming from HQ to my Branch office, I came with some influence from User Interface team at HQ. This helped me establish my self as a User Interface team person in my branch. There has been a lot of opposition with in my branch about my role. Though they have not raised the concern directly. The developent team and testing team are working closely to put all the pressure they can on me. The fight is on. After coming to my branch office, I am supposed to concentrate on the Country specific requirements. Languages based requirements, country specific features etc. But because of the pressure, I have become more of a co-ordinator between the HQ User interface team and the Branch office development/testing team. Well, the fight is on and I hope to clarify to all at my branch that, I am supposed to concentrate more on requirements gathering than resolution of conflicts in requirements and implementation. Because most of the requirements I am resolving are defined by the HQ User Interface team and not me. Before joining User Interface team, I have worked as a Test Engineer, SQA Engineer and Clearcase Administrator. Now, though, it feels good to be on the "Software definition" side, rather than on "Software verification" side, the pressure currently is huge, especially me being alone out here. Building a team seems a difficult job. This is more of a fight for me to be in this role. But, I do not understand: do I really have to fight to be in this role? If I get a good mentor, I think I can do better. And also, I would like to have my designation as Business Analyst. To get a Business Analyst role, I will have to change my job. But then If I change my job, all the reputataion I have built in my company/branch would be lost. THE DILEMNA. Thanks for reading. Opinions/suggesstions welcome Regards, Unknow n User Oct 4, 2007

Hi all,

I am interested in a Business Analyst job. I have done my B.E in Information Science and passed out last year. How much of Prior experiance do i require? Hi All, First of all, this is by far the most informative forum on BA. My Query: I have worked in embedded/Digital TV domain for roughly 3 yrs now and have had varied experience like Designing modules/coding/testing/documenting/client interaction on requirements and an end to end exposure on the entire product development life cycle on a DTV project. Latest exposure included getting client requirements and converting them into solutions at our end. This required working with BD teams in other countries. Now i want to be a BA in software industry. I have th big picture which most of the 'developer' may not have. But the problem is that i have been branded as an "embedded developer" and thus my CV dosent have the visibility. 1. Do i qualify as a BA if i can sell myself 2. Any courses other than IIBA which would put me on the platform. 3. Any random suggestions / insights welcome. Rgrds, Rohitash Unknow n User Oct 9, 2007

Only thing is that is am not certain about BA future. Should I go with BA or .Net. Can anyone of you please help me decide. Claudio Kerber Oct 11, 2007

hi sonar patel,

I was a good programmer and I was almost a good system analyst, but when the business analysis came to my life I had to choose, because you can´t be very good in more than one thing at the same time. When considering career options we consider how will we dress, how much respect we will receive from other people, how much money we will get, how many people will we lead, all that stuff. When I was 17 I decided to become a civil engineer because I liked the car an engineer, friend of mine had, and I liked the way people respected him at the construction sets (the white helmet). When considering career options we consider how will we dress, how much respect we will receive from other people, how much money we will get, how many people will we lead, if your mama is gonna like it, all that stuff. The criteria for me to choose was the routine. We use to spend the best hours of the day working. If you take a look at the window now you´ll probably see the sun shinning, the kids playing, birds singing and all that stuff called life. That´s why you must be sure that what you are doing inside that box also known as office really compensates that. If you are having fun and having your talents challenged. In my case, I opted for business analysis after "analyzing" what kind of days I would be having doing it. I´m happy with my decision and having very nice days. What about the money? Well, having good days is priceless, and the best part is that It seem to bring more money to you. Money likes happy people. We talk a lot about analysis, we analyze everything but ourselves. Remember, you are the primary actor of the big summary use case called "your life" and as an important stakeholder your interests must be heard. So, nosce te ipsum!

Hi Guru, In my opinion, the BA role has better potential for future growth and open more opportunities for you. The path of the IT BA is: - Assoc Business Analyst - Business Analyst - Sr. Business Analyst - Principal Business Analyst - Sr Principal Business Analyst - Business Architecture - Chief Business Architecture However at any point, you might jump across to IT Account Management or Business Management because you learn alot about the systems and business in this role.

Management because you learn alot about the systems and business in this role. Hope this helps. John http://www.center4ba.com P.S. I'm building a BA Community for anyone whose interested. Unknow n User Oct 31, 2007

Hello all, I am starting a new position next week, my title will be Business Systems Analyst. This is the 3rd "Analyst" position I've held at this company (the previous two were "Operations Analyst" and "Programmer Analyst"). My duties are very specific to our company's business, but generally, I will be helping to overhaul the processes of our Systems Operations department, as well as fielding incoming client and user requests for our area, and funneling them to the correct developer or other area within our IT department. But like my other positions, this one will evolve and change with our business needs. The reason I'm a good fit for this position, is that I've occupied positions in the other departments that I will be advising and working with. I will have a decent understanding of the IT side of all the projects that I will be working on. My duties will involve looking at our IT processes at a macro level and designing solutions that will increase our accuracy and productivity. Since I will be leveraging the 6+ years of experience I've gained with my current employer, this position is a natural progression for me. I recently came to the conclusion that I'm just not a "developer" - I don't have that tenacity to wrestle with code for hours and hours buried in my cube. I like looking at the bigger pictures, finding ways to make things work better, and I like working with people. I think this is going to be a great fit. Even though I didn't plan on ever having this job title, it is a very natural progression for me. -Mason

Hi Pradnya, Your ole will likely encompass all things to do with the HR function in the new company. These could include: HR Systems HR Organisation, and HR Processes What projects you work on first will depend on what has been identified as a high priority by the business owner. Probably a key performance indicator (KPI) is not being met and you could be asked to investigate and analyse why it's not being achieved and to come up with a recommendation / solution. If your plan is agreed upon and approved, you'll have to work with various stakeholders to implement it through to completion. Hope this helps you, given that these are just some high level ideas. Hi All, I must implement my best side of having technical and business absorbing skills. It is true what you all have said starting from being the transformer of business requirements jargon to opposite required technical architect terminologies. “The bridge” BA is not about being bias or un-bias. BA beats programmers by speaking human, machine and can/should freely switch between them. I agree with this huge blog initiator, I could not say more or mention how much it is hard to be excluded and misunderstood as competitor. Even in the long run, when people realize the need of BA, thereafer some will outcast their own colleagues. This confusion of BA role and how it correlates to Information technology is like thin white line. It is more than that; I believe it depends on the organization structure specifically IT structure and understanding. One can not define what a BA is, but can identify what are the deliverables required. Regardless of practices used ranging from simple MS-Office Applications to SAP Business Implementation. BA are ruled by internal organization policies and, if exist at all, procedures. The one advantage is to tie end loose strings in the effort of reminding daily routine zombies with the vital role of introducing a BA, not only added IT cost. The 6 million questions will be: "How much effort did you put by searching the environment you strive in, understand your surrounding?" Take your time answering this quotation. It should span to N years. Solution is simple, take the lead and be an aggregator. People like proofed results and outcomes. Speak loudly and back it up with solid coherent actions. You do not have to be a tech freak or business nerd. You need to be precise, demanding, and the breaking point. Added flavor of good politics is a must but do not exaggerate. You are a BA not just a cheesy follower. Ah, the last fruitful ingredient, always keep in mind that you are crucial and you are there due to market demand. The best way to start right is to bring along internal, diligence preferred senior staff, and external, new matured business models, allies. But the dilemma will always be, how much time BA has to wait….. This I surrender to my colleagues’ judgment and feedbacks. H M Winning Nov 14, 2007

Manah - Everyone who has asked me questions about what a BA is or does should read your comment - EXCELLENT points. i also liked the way you expressed things. Thanks for posting. sam makda Nov 15, 2007

hi all, Anyone knows the job profile of Insurance Analyst? please do message me in detail if somebody know about it. seabyam Nov 28, 2007

To Sam Madka: Transitioning from a Business Analyst to a Financial Analyst is realistic. Oftentimes, analysts on the business side come from the IT division. As a BA you should be knowledgeable with the business, so if you're interested in Finance, I recommend that you try for a BA position supporting the financial units. Raovarinedr singh Dec 10, 2007

Thanks In advance, Manjunath Unknow n User Dec 18, 2007

Dear Rao, MBA will not help you to harness your skills as a Business Analyst. The key is the domain knowledge which is key competancy of BA. No B-School would be able to give you domain knowledge for each industry business. You need to indentify whether you want to become BA for financial sector or manufacturing or healthcare sector etc. As a BA you will not have very broad choice to change your industry because your main strength is your domain knowledge unlike a software engineer where technology is main strength irrespective of the indutry. Hence, decide your domain area and read good articles on net to understand its business dynamics and business processes. I hope this helps. rgds, Nikhil Kumar Jain Unknow n User Dec 18, 2007

Rao - I would disagree a bit with Nikhil. I don't think anyone needs to limit themselves to any particular industry. I think the key is to gain solid basic business knowledge and develop the talent to see the commonalities across business. Combine this with an ability to learn quickly and most important to LISTEN (another way to learn quickly) a BA should be able to apply themselves anywhere. While "book learning" is good nothing substitutes for experience. If there's a particular industry you are interested in - go work in that industry in some fashion while you're doing the education. Also remember - there are different flavors of BA - thanks for posting and good luck! Unknow n User Dec 19, 2007

Hi All, Can any one tell me what is the Difference Between Business Analyst and System Analyst...please i need atleast 5 points as i need to give a presentation on this tommorow. Thanks Sudeep Kishore Gudipati Dec 28, 2007

Hi Uttam and all others who wish to get into Business Analysis, There are so many options for Business Analysts in Insurance domains right now. Particularly for Health Insurance related. So you might have very high chances for getting through to a BA profile. However, you need to understand all the responsibilites of a BA thoroughly. Do visit and browse through BABOAK from iiba.com. Also learn UML atleast till Use Case diagrams, Activity Diagrams, Sequence Diagrams. Most of the companies expect you to know atleast one modeling tool like MS Visio or Rational Suite for being a BA.

Also search for documentation standards like S/W Requirement Analysis, Functional Requirements, User Interface, Test Case docs etc. You need to prove to the company that you are not just a domain guy, but have a very good understanding of SDLC concepts , technical areas like ( .NET Framework, J2EE framework, database concepts, etc. which might help you in giving technology speech to your domain knowledge). Also try visualizing the s/w applications that you've already used as an enduser while working as a functional guy in your previous companies. Try capturing the technology part of it now. For insurance domain, most of the companies are looking for US Health Care specialization (to my knowledge and experience), which you can easily get adapted with your experience. For everybody in this blog, lemme introduce myself to all. Firstly I am very happy to see such a big blog that talks more about Business Analysts. I have 3+ yrs of experience out of which 2+ yrs as a BA in the domains of Healthcare, Insurance and Financial Services. My qualification is MSc (Computers) and PGDSEM (S/W enterprise management) of late. I began my career with a telecom company as a MIS coordinator working on databases in A/R department. Later I worked in a BPO for a Health Insurance domain and finally got through the challenge of being a Business Analyst which happened in a very short time in the same company. I am currently working in Financial Accounting and Taxation Domain for a US Client. As per my knowledge, domain knowledge added with my technical knowledge has helped me to reach this place which i am really happy for. Even though I dont have perfect coding skills like traditional programmers, I can understand the basics of it. Guys please lemme correct it if i am wrong anywhere. Right now I'm looking forward to understand the role of BA in telecom domain. Any help from you guys would be highly appreciated. - Kishore Gudipati Unknow n User Jan 4, 2008

Hi all, I came across this link while searching for blogs for Business Analysts and I couldnt stop myself from visiting this blog again and again and read all the valuable inputs from experienced people. I have B.Tech(I.T) with M.B.A(mktg.) background with little experience in presales.I will be soon facing interviews for Business Analyst so have few questions in mind. 1. What level of technical knowledge is expected of a BA and in which domain? 2. What is the role of the BA when the system enters into a design phase? 3. One question which troubles me a lot is that when only a client sends a RFP or RFI we come to know about the client's domain,so before starting the requirements gathering process how should one gather information on all the technical aspects related to that particular project. 4.How far is a Business Analyst responsible if the project fails? 6.What tools are mandatory for a Business Analyst and what are key focus areas to successfully sail through this role? Looking forward for answers Thanks A curious BA Unknow n User Jan 17, 2008

I think the answers to these questions really depends on the company you work for and how they utilize the BA role. Where I work, the BA is a key part of the project. On small projects, they serve as PM, BA, and QA. Some people love this and some hate it because you have to be so well rounded. I'll try to answer your questions from my perspective. I'm sure others have very different experiences. 1) We have both technical and non-technical BAs. The more technicals tend to rise to the top, though 2) In design, the BA is responsible for writing the functional design document. The main component of this is working with the development team to come up with the system requirements that will meet the business requirements from analysis. The BA is driving this effort; holding meetings, meeting with the customer to answer questions. After that is done, we work on the overall test approach while the technical design is being written. 3)Don't work on RFP. We have internal customers. 4)The BA is responsible for getting his deliverables done on time. In design that is the Functional Design and the Test Approach documents 6) Really depends on the business. I'd say written and verbal communication skills are more important than tool skills though. To be successful, you need to be able to talk to non-technical and technical people. As many have said up above, you are the bridge between business and systems. Not everyone can communicate effectively to both groups and this is why good BAs are valuable to an organization. Unknow n User Jan 19, 2008

Hope to get the answers to clear my doubts and have better understanding between Qulaity Analyst and Business Analyst Unknow n User Apr 1, 2008

Roshan, I've been a BA going on four years and the difference between a quality and business analyst is that the quality analyst will be heavily involved with testing software and ensuring that everything works as designed and as close to flawless through a system of best practices and guidelines. A business analyst can and will sometimes do this but usually not on the same scale, especially for large software systems that changes in can greatly impact. The business analyst will usually be occupied with functional testing and working closely with developers and business leads on making changes, hopefully not major, to software that will meet the business's expectation. juan w ang Apr 7, 2008

Hi Rams, The job market in AUS in general is still pretty strong with good opportunities for experienced BAs. As for which path to pursue, this depends on your career goal and it's a bit difficult to advice as such. Hi Roshan, It seems like you're leaning towards Quality Analyst. Having been there I wouldn't recommend it! But to address your first question - Business Analyst is like an umbrella and underneath this umbrella are specialty areas such as Quality Analyst and Systems Analyst. It's a misconception to think that a BA as mostly dealing with software and being tech related. You could be involved in business process improvement and any aspects of the business. IT is only one part of a business. Quality Analyst gets very boring very quickly. Particularly if the company is a one product company! If you still want to get your foot in the door as a Quality Analyst and looking for something to study, I'd recommend doing a Six Sigma Green Belt course. It'll be highly valued Internationally. Hope this helps both of you! Regards, John Vu Center4BA

Hi Everyone!! I’m entirely confused about my career growth. I’d HIGHLYappreciate all kinds of suggestions to my queries. I’m a post graduate in Eng and am working as a Technical Writer in IT-for-publishing Industry for last 1 ½ yrs. My work profile involves making sense of one-liner requirements gathered from the clients, elaborating these for the development and testing teams with the help of specs, presentations and prototypes, marking required changes in the existing applications, finding best ways of fulfilling different client requirements in the given time period, doing research on extra features that can be added to our products to make them more competitive, sometimes designing the complete applications (from front end to back end) and of course writing (online help etc). My query is- Am I already performing the role of a BA? If not, what extra skills (technical/

non-technical) do I need to develop to become a B.A. in my near future? And if I’m too far from becoming a BA, should I gain some more experience as, say a â €œRequirements Analystâ€ first and then head towards BA?

hi, my background is MBA in HR and marketing management, can u people clear my doubt, can i get into BA job? do my qualification support me for that? Waiting for response. Aviral Bansal May 11, 2008

Very well defined at a practical level. I believe that the role of a business analyst is also that of a nursery caretaker. A nursery where every business requirement is treated like a child, taken care of and updated regularly with appropriate audit trail. Making sure that the business requirement reflects the exact need of the business at a given time. It also means taking ownership for the technical specifications and making sure that they are updated everytime the business specification is updated. A business analyst needs to be a good collaborator and an excellent communicator with the ability to represent information in the most user-friendly way possible. It means an ownership of the whole development cycle and the UAT at the end to ensure that what is delivered is aligned to what was asked for. The business analyst needs to have a design thinking with the objective of creating value for the business. Helping the business in designing the next obvious step to add new revenue streams, nurture existing ones, save loss of revenue, improve operational costs etc. Unknow n User May 17, 2008

Hi Anupama, Not sure if you are or are not from the IT industry but if you are not then first of all you need to be familiar with the IT industry, the way IT projects are done, the methodologies they follow, what are the various set of people that are involved in carrying out a project and their roles and responsibilities. Then you must have an analytical bent of mind and skills that are required for a business analyst like Logical/Rational thinking skills, Good communcation skills, Good interpersonal skills, Good understanding of OOAD (Object Oriented Analysis and Design). There are some certifications also available in the Market which should help you. Hope this helps.. UDAY DESHPANDE Jun 2, 2008

BA has a more important role to play compare to that of a IT developer. A developer having sound knowledge of IT can not be effective unless he gets authenticate in put regarding complex procedures being followed in the perticular Domain. A good BA can prove himself to be mentor for a developer and makes his task as easy as a child's play. I have seen many good developer getting confused as they have no knowledge about the procedures followed in that domain.

Hi Vincent, There is an major issue what BA's they face when changing jobs i.e. "Lack of standaridzed responsibilty across organization" i.e. 2 BA's working for different org's could or mostly would have different set of responsibilities. Now every organisation has a different perception of the role of a BA unlike a PM or Tester wherein a project manager follows a standard practice no matter where they go, now the variations they may see would be around methodoligies which would more or less revolve around PMI or Prince2 guidelines. But with a BA organisations tend to follow their own rule set. So the question you asked on the expected responsibility depends on what type of firm it is and where you will be placed Like in a sheer IT/technical solutions provider firm the one you mentioned, the role of a BA would be centered around a product/service and you would be expected to understand the product/service and be made part of either a product development team where your job could be to enhance the product mostly through change requests or customer issues which becomes versioning or you may be tasked to a customer/account(s) and job would be to understand their requirements and make sure the internal technical team understands it. Purely the job of a BA is to be bridge between customers and the technical team. To summarize on the Role which is purely dependent on the company structure now i am assuming a typical product driven IT firm: 1) Understand the company product/service 2) Understand the customer base and how they use the product 3) trawl on the history of the product with the cuatomer and understand the cision of your account manager with that instance of the product 4) Get to understand the technical team supporting the product instance for the customer 5) Get yourself accustomed to the product/project deliverlables like : - Change Request from the client - SOW (statement of work prepared by your firm) you may be asked to prepare this - High Level business requirements (now this should ideally come from the client) - Detailed Business Requirements ( this could be customer or you could be asked to prepare in collaboration with the cutomer) - Functional Specs - Non Functional Requirements - Test Cases (Functional, Unit, Performance)

Now aforementioned deliverbales are the most common set which could be seen anywhere you go. But again as i mentioned before the role and responsibility would vary across compnaies and type/stage of projects/products Best of luck. Hope this helps

I am really energetic and dedicated professional ? can you please share your valuable comments and recommendations ? how to proceed further?.Your inputs are highly important to me, so please share your thoughts?. Thanks in Advance?. sanatanya Oct 16, 2008

Hi Friends, --- About Business Analysis Training Institute ----

--- About Business Analysis Training Institute ---I would like to inform all the innocent people ( even though you are very educated ) that you fall prey to may of the institutes claiming that they have a program endorsed with IIBA, but the truth is that you will learn nothing from them except that you are going to waste your valuable time and money. I would instead advise you to go through the IIBA BOK and its free as well. well the institutes in Hyd are making money and they impart nothing in terms of knowledge. I think BA is such a crutial role in an industry which no one can learn mare by attending the classes which are of no use. I would sincerely advice all of you who are planning to join any Training Institute for BA, not to waste your time. If u join the courses they u would feel sorry for ur self which i can assure U. H M Winning Oct 21, 2008

Good point Santosh - I've looked at some of the training courses out there. The IIBA BOK is an excellent source of information. Vijay Reddy Nov 2, 2008

Hi all , I agree with your comments .Initially talk to faculty before joining any course ,do not go by perception . Always if Quality is high then Cost is also high.

Hi everyone, I have got over two and half year of experience in software testing. I want to jump in as a Business Analyst. Can anyone suggest how could i jump into a BA role. Is any degree or certification is required for BA? Geetesh Jain Mar 9, 2009

Hi Ajit, I assume when you say s/w testing it would be on a product/application,something that would cater to some domain for a client. Given that case, you stand a good chance to move into Business Analyst role provided you demonstrate your knowledge on the domain and the application(if a famous product).

product). Also learn the role of a BA and the kind of responsibilities BA plays . Check the below link

Vaibhav,

Since you bring domain knowledge right from you work place, You stand a good chance to move in to a BA role. To move in to Business Analyst role, the first step should be to get in to the projects where HR apps are used/customized for clients, may be you can begin with Testing initially, this will help you to explore the numerous modules at a very detail level and this is how you will add application knowledge. And with Application and Domain knowledge the next step you can look for Business Analysis, provided you be prepared with the role of BA and its responsibilities. Cheers !! Hi everyone, Im curious to hear your opinions on this situation. Im currently employed at a design agency as Head of Online. My usual day consists of discussions with the client on how to improve key areas of their online communications. Usability, functionality and digital campaigns. This is then briefed into our creative and technical team for execution. My background is more on the creative side (10 years as a designer 5 years as head of online) I have just been approached by a company to become Business analyst. Its a good opportunity and better pay. The question is would my skills (client facing, writing creative and technical briefs) be appropriate for the role?

Geetesh Jain May 12, 2009

Hi Russell, You perfectly fit in to the BA role however just keep in mind that you are governed by IT processes & deliverables which every BA in IT industry has to adhere to it. You will be interacting with many clients in the industry, different challenges and requirements which you will get exposed to, and your expertise in this industry will act as domain knowledge, however at the end you are supposed to document all this things as part of your delivery + there are so many other responsibilities which a BA plays during SDLC phase. My suggestion is before you jump to this role, get yourself acquainted to the role and responsbilities and then only take this call. Cheers !! Geetesh Jain http://businessanalystworld.blogspot.com

Hi, I work for a financial instituion as a Project Manager and one of the challenges my company has always faced is trying to structure and formalize a group of 10 BAs that we have across the business units. The question becomes one of placement (ownership) of the BA role ? Should it be in IT or in the Business??. In each area, what is the difference in the role / responsibilities??. What are the pros and cons??...........Basically, what options exist when trying to establish a formal ?BA Structure???

I was wondering if anyone has any thoughts on this or any experiences from other companies that they could share.

Hi! Thank You for Your quick response! I have gone through the blog and some doubts are cleared. I want to know whether there are institutes in India that provide good training in Business Analyst.I had spoken to one of the institute in India but i dont find it to be good. They told me that system analyst and business analyst are same profile but as far as the knowledge that i have gathered by reading the blog, system analyst are more into IT and business analyst are more into business. Also want to know the duration of BA course and is there any age limit in it or not. Waiting for Your Response. Thank You! H M Winning Aug 7, 2009

Gitu I am impressed by you. You are right in that people say that business and IT analysts are different. I am here to tell you that you know that those statements are not true. I support you in what you are thinking. There is no age limit to a business analyst. I do not know of institutes in India that teach what I talk about. I will say that I know of a company in India named Cognizant and have been impressed by people who I have met who are here in American working for that company. I would suggest that you apply with them and that you continue to seek knowledge. You seem to understand things well. Please don't become discouraged - keep looking and feel free to ask me anything where you think I can be of help to you. gitu Aug 8, 2009

Hi! Thank You so much for Your response! Can You tell me Cognizant company is located where in India because after searching in internet i could'nt find the relevant information.Do they provide training for the profile of a business analyst? Moreover may i know the duration of the course. Is Business analyst course expensive? Also want to know whether online study will be good or attending classes will be good and helpful. Is it possible to have training and work experience simultaneously? One last question- experience in the profile of a arbitrageur(share market) will be of any help as i have got an offer and will be facing the interview after one day.

help as i have got an offer and will be facing the interview after one day. Currently I want to work, gain experience and together with that do course also. Feeling really very bad for putting forward so many questions. But what to do, before taking any vital decision i want to clear out all my doubts. Waiting for Your Response. Thanks and Warm Regards Gitu

This is a long blog, but I agree with the fact that often time people in the business analyst role are snubbed out of the IT dept. I have a very serious question, hopefully someone can offer advice. I was a applications analyst which put me more on the IT side. My company outsources IT projects to India, so a majority of my time and communication was with them. I get complaints from others not working so closely with them that I am not doing my job and I am not handling my workload.. however I very much disagree.. should I sink or swim in this situation? Barb Colpitts Aug 26, 2009

You can definitely swim if you scope out the priorities based on your mandate. If you wear "many-hats" as an analyst you must first support core org functions and business processes as applicable to your mandate. Use your skills of communication, analytical and problem-solving to resolve the strategic issues of complaints. It is a job that you may not always be understood by your peers, but it is a balancing act of respect and appreciation. Good luck. Paula Harrell Aug 27, 2009

Thanks for the advice. I am thinking about taking another programming course so that I can easily keep up with my co-workers. My major was in IT Management, not programming so I feel like this might help me in my situation as well. Sep 4, 2009

Because the BA is seen as a filter between Business and IT, the BA should have the 'clout' of the business to be a champion for their needs, but have been from an IT background so they can understand what is possible and appropriate timings for tasks. I have been a BA/PM in the past and this gives the BA the gravitas that forces IT to see them as useful, not just another layer of complexity and accountability to the business,

I have a very good knowledge of Travel Domain, working in Travel domain company since March 2003 Please suggest me how to change my career as a BA. Gary john Feb 3, 2010

Hi, I read some of the above comments and feel that this discussion got mis-directed somewhere and now its not clear if we are talking about the Role of a Business Analyst or if we are asking what all I need to do to become one and then some of us are comparing it with what we currently do as part of our jobs. 1. Role of a BA: Genuinely I feel its appropriate to term a BA as an Analyst, reason: a. BA binds the complete project together. Follows all aspects of a project / product life cycle unlike a QA/SA who are more phase specific. b. @ Kupe: QA doesnot analyse if the requirements are complete. This is a basic responsibility of a BA and thats the reason, all the process flows and UMLs are used. c. Most of the documents / URS / BRD / FRS / Test dcouments are signed off by the business owners and a BA. Test Documents might have a QA sign along with a BA as author. Most of the companies even today doonot realise or feel the need for a professional Business Analyst. As such, I feel a Business Analyst in the longer term should have domain speicifics, thats how he/she can analyse the business and thus follow / apply industry standards and suggest improvements. Many a times, a Technical Application Arcitect along with a BA serve the business with the feasibility analysis of a solution / approach. This is how the BA serves as a liason b//w the business and the IT team. I agree with Soumitra about being lft out, but then its a BA who has to protect the interests of the business while making sure the IT team does not get penalised for a commitment thats unrealistic. I hope some of this makes sense. jazz81 Feb 17, 2010

Hello, Is there anyone out here who came into Business Analysis after being into a Technical Writing profile? I have 10 years of IT experience, out of which 6+ experience has been in Technical Writing (Banking domain with an Indian IT firm). Besides, I have an excellent command over a foreign language. Next, I am inclined towards moving to Business Analysis, as I feel I have good analytical and communication/presentation skills. Though I am well-informed about what it takes to be a BA in terms of the requried skillset in theory, I need to find out the following: a) How would things look in real, especially for someone who has had a technical writing background? b) Is my plan to move into this field of Business Analysis, late by any standards, especially by Indian IT industry standards? c) Since I was thinking of first getting a relevant certification to get started (from IIBA), it wont work, however, as I found that the primary eligibility to appear for a certification exam, is 5 years of work experience!! What do I do now? Straightaway explore opportunities, get into BA role via a proper route, testing profile for instance? d) Would pre-sales kind of a profile be more suitable rather than BA, considering the amount of time I have spent in IT industry already? Can anyone offer their expert comments on any of the above queries? A relevant reply may help me a great deal in making the correct career move! Thanks in anticipation! I have been reading all of these comments with interest. Our organization runs conferences for business analysts and PMs around the world. www.businessanalystworld.com. We are very interested in running an event in India. I have noticed that there is no IIBA chapter up and running yet. Hi All, I am a MBA finance with 1.5 yrs exp in securities operations with a BPO unit of a reputed MNC bank. Now I have 2 offers, one in operations again with one level more of seniority in another BPO unit of a reputed MNC bank and another as a business consultant in a banking software company. The former role will be somewhat monotonous and future growth path is finally a team leader/team manager. The latter is more of interacting with client, understand their business requirements and then communicate it to development team to implement it in the software. I think this is similar to BA role. But it will be entry level job.Salary will be more or less same in both cases. I have good domain knowledge in banking/securities ops/derivatives, my communication skills are fine but technical abilities need to be developed. Which career path should I opt for?? Thanks in advance for your suggestions. Sourav USER_2235137 Nov 22, 2010

There seems to be quite a confusion amongst other things between peoples understanding of the term business analyst. To me this is extremely clear. I am a Business Analyst working for an overseas government agency. The term Business Analysis is obviously very widen in scope. graduated 3 years ago with Conjoint BCom and BSc degrees at an overseas university. Most of my work has an operational focus ( once again a broad term) and looks at operational performance in the main with process analysis and strategic advisories ( strategic operational analysis). You could have financial analysts who are also business analysts and furthermore technological analysts ( information systems and technology - IST) who are also performing a form of

analysts ( information systems and technology - IST) who are also performing a form of "Business Analysis". I think the systems business analyst or loosely systems analyst should clearly separate analysts within the IST field from other forms of "Business Analysis". USER_2235326 Nov 22, 2010

Small companies and manufacturers should not accept that just because they did not qualify for a traditional loan over the past couple of years, that lenders are no longer interested in their business. I know I have read stuff like this somewhere. Great?! bullyhunk Aug 8, 2012

I took training from H2K Infosys. It is very reliable and excellent Training centre. comparing with other institutes they charge very less. But they provide material and training double what we pay. People who wants to take training in BA, I strongly recommend this training Institute. koti_sunny Dec 4, 2012
