Editorial

Summer fresh projects! Dear Beaders,

Perlen Poesie 33 arrives as usual with fantastic projects and lots of useful tips … … for example, on the subject of "beading materials": What are the differences and what is suitable for which jewelry project? Beginning on page 20, you will find the answers to these questions and more useful information. The jewelry of our main protagonist Kinga Nichols (USA) attracts everyone’s attention. For you, the former art student and trompe l'oeil (optical illusion) artist – or illusionist – has designed magnificent bracelets in embroidery using silk braids, buttons and beads. Don’t worry, they are stronger than they look! Just as beautiful – but completely different in appearance – the bracelet by Oxana Ripela (Slovak Republic), which she had designed for the IBA 2016 (From Cubism to Art Deco) in various beading techniques – Take note: difficulty level 5! Find out more about beautiful and practical things on the news pages, accompany us on a trip to the 400-year-old glassworks city of Lauscha in Thuringia, Germany and let yourself be inspired by snapshots of the BEADERS BEST Bead Art Fair from April of this year in Stuttgart, Germany.

2 017

Last but not least: Take part in IBA 2017. Show that – and how – technology and nature are compatible. Well-known sponsors are standing by to surprise 11 winners: JOHN JAMES, PRECIOSA, MATUBO, MIYUKI, MODASTRASS, STARMAN, TOHO. Submission deadline is September 1, 2017. www.perlen-poesie.com/iba-2017 I wish you a lot of incentive – and fun. All the best,

Andrea Ott Editor-in-chief

Tip of the artist: Alternatively you can insert the crystal later when about 2/3 of the next round of square stitch is finished. This will prevent that the stone drops off the project several times while you are working and thus you will be more concentrated on the firmness of the stitches.

he beaded painting in blue tones, reminiscent of Delft ceramic painting, was designed by Dorothea Therese Plenhart (1924-2015) and fashioned in three-dimensional bead embroidery. The former ballet dancer and choreographer, who lived her later life in ‘s-Hertogenbosch (Netherlands), could no longer continue in her profession because of an unhealed knee injury – and found her way to artistic

design using beads. She used them to "paint" opulent, floral pictures with a pronounced feeling for detail and depth. The artist left behind paintings, small furniture and textile room accessories decorated with 6.5 million glass beads– stitched bead for bead in thousands of hours. You’ll find a detailed account of Dorothea Therese Plenhart’s “Beaded Room” in one of the next issues of Perlen Poesie. Andrea Ott

A Good Atmosphere The BEADERS BEST 2017 at the BEADERS BEST Bead Art Fair Crossover, April 2017 in Stuttgart.

The exhibiting and workshop-giving artists were kept very busy by the constant stream of visitors. Nevertheless, they were often able to interest visitors to spontaneously decide to participate in their courses on beading techniques; most bead enthusiasts had selectively pre-registered for the master courses. The BEADERS BEST area was next to the Mineral-Fossil-Jewelry Fair in Stuttgart, Germany where it attracted the attention of the classic jewelers and those interested in the purchase of handmade, finished jewelry. Kinga Nichols

Rock the Beads Imagination, fed by good observation, becomes art!

10

For a catacomb Saint Kinga Nichols uses fine silk fabrics, various embossed and/or glossy leathers, and in addition to glass beads also buttons, freshwater pearls, opals, gems, cabochons with pictures and whatever else she found that matches. All edges are carefully bordered with beads. The pieces are durable and made to last. Each shimmers in a different gently-graded color space. Time and again she is inspired by the animal world. At one with themselves and thus unaffected by human judgement, these creatures calmly look the observer in the eye. ‡ Perlen Poesie ‡ 33 ‡ 2017 ‡

Born in 1980, Kinga Nichols came from Salgoltarjan in Hungary and moved to the USA at the age of 19, where she now lives in Boulder, Colorado with her husband and her dogs. In the last few years she has surprised the bead-loving public with beadwork: her very own style has attracted attention, she has placed well in several international jewelry competitions (Battle of the Beadsmith, Bead Dreams), and has even been able to give up her previous job to make her way as a bead artist and instructor for bead jewelry courses. ‡ Perlen Poesie ‡ 33 ‡ 2017 ‡

t’s not easy to describe her style: it is both flamboyant, with a silky brilliance and very colorful, then every so often takes on a delightful absurdity, when she presents jewelry not only as a “beautiful design“, but rather parallel as a “being” so whimsical and likeable … The artist describes herself as introverted and not so much as an intuitive, but more a thinking type “with ever-rotating gears in the brain”. She studied art (without earning a degree), likes to read, and continually works at improving herself – because “a person can also be a well-rounded, versatile personality without a university degree”. From the time she could hold a pencil in her hand, she has recreated her world through her drawings. “Since the age of 6, I have been the proud winner of a number of competitions in chalk painting – but all I had to show for them were the sand pails that I had won! In elementary school I was a member of the art club, in high school (secondary school) I was in a special art class, and had I finished university, I would have been an art teacher.”

he road to designing with beads led through a series of detours. At the age of 11, the medium came into her life for the first time: for a whole summer, she made and gave away beaded crocodiles. This passion quickly vanished again, with beads re-entering her life when she was 27. At that time she was earning her living by painting murals. Kinga tells us: “It was a nice job, but as an introverted person, I found it stressful when the client would stand behind me for days and ask me if the blue was really right for the sky and whether it would match the curtains on the window. Yes, my clients were satisfied at the end, but having to explain to them that the blue of the sky consisted of several layers, so you couldn’t judge the end result after only the first one – no, that wasn’t for me. In a shop where I got acrylic paint, I discovered a beading magazine. Spontaneously, I took it with me, it promised to be a pleasing hobby, something for home – where no one would ask me annoying questions. I bought a few inexpensive beads

after university she wanted to be an artist and did a suggested project: a bead-embroidered bracelet. Then I set the magazine aside and “invented” my first bead-embroidered necklace – it looked more like a toilet seat … that was a few years before I saw other publications or met beaders in person. I was captivated by beads, but worked in a cultural vacuum and invented things that others had already invented – without me – but that’s how life goes. A few thousand hours of practice later, I had developed my own style.” Kinga has always stayed with embroidery – no wonder, as it is still like painting. She also uses other techniques, but only if they serve her beloved technique, embroidery. She allows the base to have its own voice: she combines fine silk fabrics or shiny nappa leather with beads, mother-of-pearl buttons, glass eyes and found or crafted curiosities into “compositions in Kinga-style”.

ho has supported her and where do her ideas come from? Her answer: “Since we are all dwarfs, standing on the shoulders of giants, I have, of course, learned from already well-known artists, specifically Beki Haley, Marcia DeCoster [Ed. note: see Perlen Poesie 11] and Nikia Angel. I also find the works of embroidery artist Sherry Serafini [Ed. note: see Perlen Poesie 12] highly stimulating. Inspirations that turn into jewelry come, for example, from the book I‘m reading, or the work of art I‘m looking at. Sometimes it starts with a certain smell or with things that my dogs do. My muse and my model is my female boxer, Samantha Regina. Her love of water and swimming, yes, her enthusiasm for fish, has, for example, sparked my imagination for jewelry with fish themes. I think and think and finally an idea appears - mostly at night, before I fall asleep. Samantha has such a charming underbite – it has made an imprint on my heart and consequently in my art. I like the idea that the things that I make have always existed somewhere else, and that they find me in their idea-form because I have an antenna that perceives them, and that I am essentially rebuilding them in reverse.” Kinga Nichols designs jewelry, sells kits with instructions, teaches from Alaska to Florida – 2017 for the first time in Europe (BEADERS BEST Bead Art Fair). Her husband supports her – her two dogs Samantha Regina und Karl Friedrich haven’t yet taken exception to her travels and are always happily waiting for her at the airport when she returns. Concerning her further life plans, she says that the idea that everything is repeated in an eternal cycle is quite appealing to her and that she would like to remain on this path – always learning something new. Her creed and her recommendation: “Become who you are!” Andrea Ott

All My Threads

In discussions among bead enthusiasts, the question frequently arises: “Which kind of thread should I use for my project?” We then have to ask: “What kind of project do you have? What technique do you want to use? What beads are going to be used?”

(1) Jewelry wire

20

F

irst, you consider the planned project (e.g. necklace, 3-D object or decoration), the respective technique (e.g. beadweaving, Soutache, wire wrapping) and the beads to be used (from size 15° seed beads to clunky wooden beads) – and only then can you pick the right type of thread. Here are a few examples: If you want a supple drape to your necklace, or if the technique itself requires a flexible thread, an appropriate choice would be, for example, a polyester or cotton thread. In the case of 3-D objects, firmness is desired, and when working with Kumihimo, a somewhat stiffer thread makes sense, so the use of nylon thread is recommended. A thread for a stretchable ring band must be elastic; a thread for stringing large beads into a

necklace must never stretch and must be very tear-resistant, etc. If you are working according to instructions from a project, it is advisable to follow the materials list the designer provided. The use of another material (e.g. fishing line instead of nylon thread) can lead to deviations from the intended result. Following, you will find various techniques and the types of threads that work best for each one.

while jewelry wire made of 7 strands is indeed inexpensive, it is also a bit stiff and susceptible to kinking. With the increase in the number of strands, both the price and the quality and flexibility rise as well: jewelry wire of 49 strands is so fine and flexible that you can even knot it. Beading silk (2), also called beading silk thread or beading silk cord, is a classic in jewelry making. The individual necklace elements are optionally simply strung, or knots are placed between each bead. The latter requires Stringing This simple technique makes use of practice, so that the knots are evenly different types of thread. A good choice, placed between the beads, making the especially for beginners, is jewelry wire necklace more flexible and – in case (1), which consists of twisted strands of the necklace tears – no beads are lost. stainless steel. beading silk is also a good choice for heavy beads. Another possibility for stringing beads is the use of braided cord (also called interknitted thread and/or braided fishing line), which doesn’t stretch, as does monofilament fishing line. For stringing projects, the diameter 0.15 or 0.17 is used. The clasp can be simply and quickly attached using a crimp bead, just like with jewelry wire.

Beadweaving (with or without a loom) Weaving using beads can either be done using a loom or by hand (using certain techniques or freestyle). For weaving with the loom, any non-elastic/ non-stretchy thread can be used. The only prerequisite is that the diameter is suitable for the beads being used. For

(7) Leather cords

beading (e.g. in peyote, herringbone or brick stitch), it is most commonly recommended to use braided cord/fishing line (3), such as, for example, FireLine by Berkley) with a diameter of 0.12 mm (= 6 lbs.) or a nylon thread (4). Braided cord is very thin, so that the smallest of beads can be worked, yet is very tear-resistant. Since the braided cord is somewhat stiff, the finished piece of jewelry is sturdy, so it can be used for three-dimensional objects, such as, for example, beaded boxes made in peyote. Nylon thread (4): If a flexible piece of jewelry is to be worked or a certain stretchability of the thread is required, then nylon thread is an alternative to the braided cord/fishing line. The selection of (multifilament, twisted) nylon threads for beadweaving is very large: the most well-known include One-G by ‡ Perlen Poesie ‡ 33 ‡ 2017 ‡

TOHO, KO-Beading Thread by Miyuki and Nozue Sonoko Beading Thread. Each of these threads has specific characteristics that make it the ideal thread for certain projects; but basically all of these threads can be used for the various weaving techniques. Transparent nylon thread (5) is often dismissed as being a “crafting thread” – wrongly. It is slightly stretchy, almost invisible due to its transparency and is strong. Thus, 0.25 mm in diameter is ideal for making 3-D beaded animals. Tip: This thread is strong enough that you can use it without needles. One last member of the group "Nylon Threads" is elastic thread (6), which can best be worked using BigEye needles. It is indispensable for making elastic bracelets or ring bands. Important to remember: the thinner the thread, the

Threads Wire Wrapping This is a very creative technique and all kinds, colors and shapes of wire and beads can be used. In general, the thinner the wire, the easier it can be formed, however the more unstable is the finished form. A balance between wire gauge and bead size should be considered. Thin wire is very flexible, but it also easily kinks and can even break. The advantages of thin and thick wire can be utilized by combining wires of different gauges in a piece of jewelry. Now you have references as to which material can be used with which project, with which technique and for which beads. Let yourself be inspired, but not limited, and follow Albert Einstein: “What is conceivable is also feasible.”

Tips Thread length: Unless specifically recommended otherwise, a good arm span of thread is used. Longer threads are unwieldy and tend to knot. Stretching: Nylon or cotton threads often retain their shape when they are unrolled from the spool – which means they are twisted – and are thus difficult to work with. Just let the thread pass through your closed hand. Pull slowly and place constant pressure on the thread with your thumb and index finger. The pull and warmth of your hand has a smoothing effect on the thread. Waxing: The majority of beading threads, such as One-G by TOHO, KO Thread by Miyuki or FireLine by Berkley are pre-waxed. The wax surface prevents fraying of the thread and makes it stiffer. If necessary, the thread can be re-waxed at any time. For this purpose, both natural wax (beeswax) and artificial wax are commercially available.

1 Sketch the vertical center line on the embroidery foundation (felt or Stiff Stuff). Position the jasper on the center line 2 cm (.8˝) from the edges. Tentatively place the 2 ammonites above it, use the picture for orientation.

2 Remove the ammonites. Adhere the jasper. Let it dry.

5

3 Cut 1 m (40˝) of beading thread and thread a needle. Secure the thread in the embroidery foundation, directly beside the cabochon stitch to the front. Pick up 2 sb11-c and pass to the back beside the jasper with some allowance and come back to the front between the 2 beads.

6

4

4 Pass through the 2nd sb11-c.

5 Pick up 2 sb11-c, slide the beads against the 2 existing sb11-c and pass to the back behind the beads with some distance to the cabochon. Tighten the thread.

6 Pass to the front between the newly added 2 sb11-c. Pass through the sb11-c picked up last. Then repeat step 5.

33

Project 2 k

7

7 Surround the cabochon in this manner with back stitches. Make sure to have an even total number of beads! At the end pass to the front and through 1 sb11-c.

10

10 In this manner, work 1 round with sb11-e, 2 rounds with sb11-c and 1 round with sb15 in peyote. Do not forget to step up at the end of each round! If the hole of a drilled cabochon is still visible fill it with 1 sb11-c in stop stitch.

13

8

9

8 Pick up 1 sb11-e, skip 1 sb11-c and pass through the following sb11-c.

11

9 Repeat the previous step all around. At the end of the round step up through the 1st sb11-e.

12

11 As the back of the ammonite is not flat it is necessary to even it with small pieces of felt. You have to cut them out and glue them to the spots that are too low on the back. In doing so use the picture for orientation.

14

12 Glue the larger ammonite to the spot you defined earlier above the jasper. Let it dry. Sketch the contour of the ammonite on the embroidery foundation with the pen, in doing so hold the pen vertically.

15

34

13 Stitch along this line with sb11-f in back stitches.

16

16 Work 1 more peyote round with sb11-d and then work 1 round with sb11-f, again add 2sb11-f at the inner angle!

14 Work 1 peyote round with sb11-f, in doing so add 2 sb11-f at the inner angle of the ammonite.

17

15 Work 1 peyote round with sb11-d, in doing so add 1 dr on the left curve, repeat for six more times as shown in the picture.

18

17 Work the last round with sb15. Secure the thread and trim.

‡ Perlen Poesie ‡ 33 ‡ 2017 ‡

18 Attach the small ammonite in the same way and surround it with beads, but start with 1 back stitch round with sb11-c. Work 2 peyote rounds with sb11-e and 1 round with sb15.

Embroidery 19

19 Attach 1 ls with 1 sb15 in stop stitch between the jasper and the small ammonite as shown in the picture. Pass again through the hole of the ls and the sb15. Pick up 2 sb15 and pass to the back outside of the ls.

22

22 Start from this line and stitch rows of different beads in back stitch, in doing so use the picture for orientation. Alternate the sizes and forms of the beads; sew on larger beads individually.

20

21

20 Attach the remaining 4 ls slightly curved between the jasper and the large ammonite.

23

21 Embellish each ls with 2–3 beaded arcs of 3 sb15 each as shown in step 19.

24

23 Use the picture for orientation and fill the empty space between jasper and ammonites as shown.

24 Stitch some arcs above the ammonites. For the last row, individually sew on a pattern of 1 rb and 1 lm (keep the alignment in mind!).

35

25

25 Trim the embroidery close to the edges, in doing so make sure to not cut any embroidery threads!

26

27

26 Adhere a piece of cardboard cut to size to the back to stabilize the work piece. The cardboard should be about 5 mm smaller than the work piece all around.

‡ Perlen Poesie ‡ 33 ‡ 2017 ‡

27 Adhere the piece leather to the back and cut it back to the the outer edges of the work piece.

28 Cut 1 m (40˝) of Fireline and thread a needle. Knot the thread end and pass forward through the embroidery foundation; in this way the knot will be between the the 2 layers. Pick up 2 sb11-d and pass from back to front closely beside the knot through both layers. Pass back through the 2nd sb11-d.

31

36

29 Pick up 1 sb11-d and pass through both layers closely beside it Pass back through this sb11-d.

30

30 In this manner, connect both layers all around, in doing so make sure that there is no visible thread on the front. Pass through the sb11-d sewed on first toward the work piece and secure the thread invisibly in the work piece, then trim.

32

31 Define the upper middle of the pendant and count the same number of beads to the left and to the right (here: 8 on both sides). Use a new piece of Fireline and on the right start from the just defined last bead to make a loop, string a pattern of three times (1 sb15 and 1 sb11-d) and 1 st15. Pass to the last bead on the left and make a loop in the same manner. Retrace the thread path several times. Secure the thread and trim.

32 Use the round beads and bead caps to make connecting elements as shown in the picture, use 1 eye pin for each of them. Follow the main picture and attach 2 links of the link chain between each connecting element. In the center, attach the clasp with 1 jump ring. Attach the just made halves of the chain to the pedant: hook 1 link of the link chain into each loop of the pendant.

8 Assembly: Cut 2 m (80˝) of Fireline 6 lb and thread a needle. Slide the needle to the middle of the thread. Bring the thread ends together and secure them with a small knot. Wax this end of the double thread. Secure the thread in the work piece, exit 1 cb11-c on the edge of the peyote band before an underlying diamond shape as shown in the diagram. Pass through 1 sb11 on the edge of 1 rivoli, the back of the rivoli points to the front. Pass through the next cb11-c on the edge of the peyote band (this one lies above the center of the diamond shape). Pass through the following sb11 on the bezel. Pass through the following cb11-c on the edge of the peyote band. Continue through 4 cb11-c (there will be 2 gaps on the edge). Four times insert 1 sb11 in peyote using small sb11. Go forward through 4 cb11-c (= 2 gaps), exit the cb11-c before the next underlying diamond shape. Fasten all rivolis all around, in doing so make sure that the rivolis are aligned in different colors evenly. Keep the thread tension even.

9 Use a new piece of thread and insert 1 cb11-d five times one at a time on the level of the upper diamond rounds, in the middle below the sb11 on the edge. Secure the thread and trim.

10

10 Repeat the previous steps on the other edge, in doing so fold the rivolis over the upper side of the band and fasten them on the lower edge. On the edge of each rivoli keep 6 sb11 unfastened on each side. Secure the thread and trim. ‡ Perlen Poesie ‡ 33 ‡ 2017 ‡

1 Cut out 1 oval and 1 round form out of the embroidery foundation leaving enough space for a 2nd set of both forms. Cut out both of them.

4

4 Stretch the Shibori ribbon, arrange it as you like on the form and fasten it along the edge with some stitches as invisible as possible which are made in the grooves of the ribbon.

7

2 Place the oval form on the Shibori ribbon as the base. Leave an allowance of 1o mm of ribbon on both sides. Trim the ribbon.

5

3 Cut 75 cm (30˝) of thread and thread a needle. Tie 2 double knots at the thread end one above the other. Fasten the piece of Shibori ribbon with an invisible stitch at the edge of the form. Use the picture for orientation.

6

5 Fold the ribbon over the edge to the back. Fasten the ribbon on the back all around, in doing so stitch in a way that the needle passes into the form on the back and exits on the edge of the form. This way there will be no visible stitches on the front.

8

6 Make some short stitches on the back to secure the thread, in doing so make sure that you do not pass the needle to the front! Trim the thread. Set the element aside.

9

55

7 Leaves: Cut 2 pieces of Shibori ribbon in leaf color, one of 65 mm and one of 55 mm length. Stretch both pieces of ribbon and check if the colors fit together.

10

10 Put a drop of adhesive onto a paper plate. Put glitter onto the 2nd plat. Dip the edge of the 1st leaf into the adhesive.

8 Cut 30 cm (12˝) of thread, thread a needle and knot the end. Pass the needle crossways through the piece of ribbon 5 mm off the edge, in doing so make sure that the folds at this end are apart. Sew back and forth twice. Cut off the folds.

11

9 Cut 1 side edge into a leaf shape. On the other side, repeat in reversed order. Prepare the 2nd leaf in the same manner.

12

11 Pull the sticky leaf edges through the glitter.

‡ Perlen Poesie ‡ 33 ‡ 2017 ‡

12 Lay the leaf out to dry on a piece of paper. Glue the edge of the 2nd leaf with glitter in the same way.

13

13 Petals: Cut the following pieces of Shibori ribbon in the color of the petals: 2 pieces of 45 mm, 2 pieces of 38 mm, 3 pieces of 32 mm and 3 pieces of 25 mm (1˝).

16

16 Carefully turn the petals inside out so that the shiny front faces upward.

14

15

14 Fold up all these pieces as shown for the leaves at one edge. Do not trim the thread!

17

15 Fan the longer parts of the ribbons out and fasten the corners on the back with some stitches, use the picture for orientation. Trim the thread.

18

17 Prepare the small petals in the same way but fasten the corners to the side edges.

18 Ice the edges of all petals with glitter in the same way as described for the leaves. Let the elements thoroughly dry.

20

21

19 Flower base: Cut 80 cm (31.5˝) of thread, thread a needle and knot the end. Stitch to the front on the edge of the round form. Pick up 2 sb11 and pass through the form from back to front with a distance of about 2 sb11. Pass back through the 2nd sb11.

20 Pick up 1 sb11, with about 1 bead distance pass through the form from front. Pass back through the newly added bead.

21 Attach sb11 all around in this way. At the end of the round pass again through the 1st sb11 and secure the thread on the back with a few stitches. Trim the thread.

22

23

24

22 Cut 50 cm (20˝) of the yellow Soutache braid. Cut 80 cm (32˝) of thread, thread a needle and double-knot the end. Fold the Soutache braid in half and pass the needle through the middle.

23 Fold both halves of the braid over the knot. Directly beside it pass back and forth through the middle of both braids.

24 Start to form a spiral: In doing so bend the braid downward and pass upward through all braids as shown in the picture.

19

56

‡ Perlen Poesie ‡ 33 ‡ 2017 ‡

Soutache | Embroidery 25

26

27

25 Coil it up a bit further and pass through all layers.

26 Continue in this manner until you can easily hold the spiral.

27 Continue to form the spiral but fasten it with stitches through 2 or 3 layers only.

28

29

30

28 For the next stitch pass the needle from the edge through 2 or 3 layers again.

29 Continue in this manner until the braid is almost used up, in doing so always work the visible stitches on the same side (= back).

30 Fold the 1st braid end to the back and sew it on. Attach the 2nd braid end a little apart on the edge of the spiral, then fold it to the back and fasten it. Trim the excess braids.

31

32

33

31 Pass through the spiral to the front close to the middle. Pick up 3 sb11, 1 flower sequin and 1 sb15 as turning bead. Pass back through the sequin and the 3 sb11 and stitch to the back of the spiral.

32 Repeat the previous step for 3–4-more times in the middle of the spiral, in doing so substitute the sequin by different other beads. Make a ring of fringes around it which are worked in the same way but with only 2 sb11 before the decorative bead (= shorter fringes). Around this ring work another ring of fringes with only 1 sb11 before the decorative bead. Then pass to the edge of the spiral.

33 Pick up 1 fp3 and 1 sb15 as turning bead and pass back through the fp3. Pass through 2 layers of Soutache braid to the back.

34

35

36

34 Again pass back to the edge and attach the next fp3 with 1 sb15. Work around the spiral in this manner. Secure the thread and trim. Set the element aside.

35 Vine: Cut 80 cm (32˝) of thread, thread a needle and double-knot the thread end. Cut 2 pieces of Soutache braid of 15 cm (6˝) each, one in green and 1 in green-striped. Place both pieces exactly fitting one above the other and pass the needle right down through the middle.

36 Pile up the braid ends over the knot and pass the needle through 2 braids. Pick up 1 sb8 and pass through the 2 opposite braids.

37 Pass back through 2 braids, the sb8 and 2 braids.

38 Pass through 2 braids, pick up 1 sb8 and pass through the upper braids slightly to left. Pass back as before.

39 Continue in this manner. The offset of the stitches to one side will cause the curving of the element. The more the stitches are offset the narrower the curve will be.

40

41

42

40 After you have inserted about 10 sb8 flip the work piece over and continue as before, this will cause the curving of the element in the other direction.

41 After about 18 sb8 pass through all braids without a bead and stitch back and forth several times. Trim the thread and excess pieces of braid.

42 Make a 2nd vine in the same manner.

43

44

43 Assembly: Arrange leaves, vines and the rhinestone chain on the base form, in doing so use the picture for orientation.

44 Attach both leaves with stitches as invisible as possible. Fasten the rhinestone chain. Invisibly fasten both vines.

45 Pick up the largest petal and position it on the edge of the round form and fasten it with invisible stitches.

46

47

48

46 Attach a total of 5 petals in descending order by size and slightly overlapping all around, in doing so make sure that no foundation remains visible.

Show us your works under: www.perlen-poesie.com/contributions Klimt‘s Kiss, submitted by Annette Pohlner (Germany). She writes: “Gustav Klimt‘s ‚Kiss‘, painted by a Russian artist as a miniature on a black lip oyster shell, inspired me to design my necklace. The “male” side is predominantly worked with geometric beads and patterns, while the “female” side carries the floral and ornamental pattern of the woman’s garment. About a year ago, slowed down by an ankle fracture, I began working with peyote and similar techniques. Three months ago I designed my first project in [bead] embroidery. “Klimt‘s Kiss” is already my 10 th object in this expressive technique and it turned out so well that I would like to show it. “We can only agree, Annette!”

Caro Bachmann (Germany) has designed this versatile jewelry. She writes: “I design everything myself and have used the basic techniques since summer 2016 with the help of your magazine. I wanted to show you a bit: it is my latest necklace and can be worn in five variations.” The necklace can be worn with and without attached jewelry elements. The latter can be used as pendants on other necklaces or leather cords. As she shared with us, this meditative hobby helps her to relieve stress. – Thanks Caro!

Lauscha

Lauscha – 400 Years of 70

The small town in the Thuringian Forest owes its existence to the glassmakers who still work here today.

S

ince 2009 Perlen Poesie has been showing how beaded jewelry is made. On our travels through the beading world, we visit artists and historical sites. Today, we are reporting on a place in Germany where glass has been produced almost continuously for over 400 years – something definitely out of the ordinary! For the production of glass, you need silica (sand), which is the actual glass-forming substance, as well as alkali (soda, potash) which is used as flux (to lower the temperature at which the silica melts), and lime (the mineral), used as a curing agent. This mixture is melted to a viscous mass at a temperature of about 1,500 degrees Celsius. The heat for this was traditionally produced in the socalled glass furnace by a wood fire, in which stood a glass

Glass

In the Farbglashütte Lauscha: During GlasPerlentage, demonstrations of pulling glass rods take place. Left: Warming up the glass gob. Middle: In the background, the puller prepares the glass gob and the runner has nearly finished the (glass) plate. Right: The puller puts the hot glass gob on the plate of the puller („marriage“). Right outer: the puller and runner create a huge glass rod on the wooden pulling track – which can be up to 45 m (49 yds) long. pot, made of clay, in which the mixture melted. The potash was obtained by burning wood. Therefore glassworks (aka glass houses) were usually built directly inside forests. When the wood of the surrounding area had been harvested, the glass-making families moved on and began again elsewhere. Their cabins of lightweight construction left hardly any traces. It was different in Thuringian Lauscha. Here the glassmakers Hans Greiner and Christian Müller received a glassworks concession from the landowner, the Coburg duke Johann Casimir in 1597, who also assured them of sufficient wood. Over the decades and centuries, the families expanded and the descendants founded new glassworks in the area. Here glass was both produced and processed into products for everyday use. The range of products included, among others, balsam vials (for the medicinal herbs industry in the region of the Thuringian Forest), inkwells/ink bottles, weights for clocks, shoemaker’s balls (water-filled, colorless glass flasks used to collect diffused light from the sun, oil or gas lamps, then focus that light onto workplaces), powder horns (for the storage of gunpowder), crown glass (aka bull‘s-eye panes, these were the first windowpanes – small and round) and all types of drinking vessels (glasses). ‡ Perlen Poesie ‡ 33 ‡ 2017 ‡

Lauscha

They had a greenish hue, due to the high iron content of the sand, and were also interspersed with tiny bubbles, caused by remnants of unmelted sand. This type of glass is also known as forest glass. Today, this appearance is once again considered charming and is imitated using modern methods, then further processed into bottles, glasses and vases.

L

auscha is known for several extraordinary inventions; for example, it is considered to be the home of glass Christmas tree ornaments and Christmas decorations. In the middle of the 18th century, the glassworks in the village were no longer able to provide enough work for the growing population, and they were looking for new „glass-based“ opportunities for employment. A descendant of the Greiner family imported the method of creating lamp-blown glassware from the Rhineland to Lauscha. Now even glass could be softened and shaped in one’s own home in front of an oil or paraffin burner – and glass jewelry was born: around 1762, hollow blown beads, then also glass figures and animals. In 1847 a Lauscha glassblower invented colored glass spheres as ornaments for the Christmas tree. The construction of a gasworks in Lauscha in 1867 allowed actual mass production of this new type of tree decoration, as large and thinwalled balls could be blown with a very hot gas flame. They

were mirrored from the inside (initially with a poisonous lead solution, later with silver nitrate) and then dipped by the family members in colorants, and sometimes partially in mica particles as well. Demand grew rapidly. Around 1900, Frank Winfield Woolworth placed an order of about 200,000 balls and other Christmas tree decorations for his department store chain in the USA. After an eventful history of two world wars and the Communist era in the eastern part of Germany, Christmas tree decorations are now being produced again in traditional craftsmanship using some more than 100 years old processes, forms and tools. Artificial glass eyes became a further source of the domestic economy. Indeed, such things were already available from France. However, in 1835, Ludwig Müller-Uri created an artificial human eye out of glass in a quality never seen before. The somewhat later developed Lauscha cryolite glass proved to be particularly malleable and therefore well-tolerated. The professional branches of ocularist (maker of eye or ocular prosthetics) as well as animal and doll eye-makers developed – to this day a highlight of the Lauscha glass art. During the production of animal eyes out of glass, in 1848 another descendant of Greiner invented marble scissors, a device for the production of glass marbles.

GlasPerlentage: Medieval glass bead production is presented. In a clay oven, heat is generated with charcoal and the help of a 2-chamber bellows so that the glass can melt. Production and demonstration by Monika Müllner and Thomas Beer.

oday‘s „Farbglashütte Lauscha“ (glassworks for colored glass) has existed for more than 150 years. The adjoining museum for glass art presents the Thuringian glass from the late Middle Ages to the present day. Every year in March, the „Lauscha GlasPerlentage“ (Glass Bead Days) takes place – a sales fair for artistically shaped glass beads with workshops for the grinding, engraving and sandblasting of glass beads, silvering of hollow glass beads, and special techniques for the production of hollow and solid glass beads. In addition to this, pulling glass is demonstrated in the glassworks, the freshly-made glass rods can then be purchased „live“. Tours concerning the history are available; also the „Lauschaer Glasprinzessin“ (the Glass Princess of Lauscha) presides over it all. We can definitely recommend a visit to the Farbglashütte Lauscha and the Lauscha GlasPerlentage: it will increase your appreciation of the history as well as impress you with how hard the work of the glass production still is. On top of that, you can train your eye and, in the future, you will be able to distinguish high-quality, hand-made artist beads from mass made products of poor quality. Andrea Ott

In the next CRAW cube (red), fasten the ri6 bezel, by passing through its 4th sb15-a. Work 2 more CRAW units. In the next CRAW unit, include the sb15-a at the tip of the large leaf. Work the 2nd half of this element in reversed order. Middle beam: Attach 5 CRAW units to the main beam starting from the ring (red). Add 6 more CRAW cubes without connecting them to the main beam. Work 1 CRAW cube, attaching 1 ri6 bezel to the outer side (red) as shown before. Work 6 more CRAW cubes. In the next CRAW cube, attach the existing ri bezel of the main beam also, using the 7th sb15-a. Add 3 more CRAW cubes. Work 5 more CRAW cubes toward the main beam, in doing so include the upper edge of the ri6 bezel in the 3rd CRAW cube (red) and attach them to the 8 th CRAW cube (counted from the upper edge) to the main beam. Outer beam: Starting from the ring, attach a 2nd CRAW unit (with doubled number of sb13 on the outer edge) to the middle beam. Add 2 more CRAW cubes, also attaching them to the middle beam (red). Attach 2 more free CRAW cubes. Attach 1 more CRAW unit, at the same time attaching the 5th sb13 (green) to the lower edge of the adjacent leaf. Add 6 more CRAW cubes. Work 1 more CRAW unit (red), also attaching the bezel of the ri6 using the 7th sb15-a. Attach 3 more CRAW cubes. Work 5 more CRAW cubes toward the middle beam, in doing so include the upper edge of the ri6 bezel in the 3rd CRAW cube (red) and attach them to the 8 th CRAW cube (counted from the upper edge) to the middle beam. On the other side of the main beam, attach 1 middle and 1 outer beam in reversed order. Work the same elements for the 2nd half of the bracelet on the opposite side.

Really Helpful From the bag of tricks of experienced beaders Everything goes – free choice of color My „rule“ for the color selection of a piece of jewelry: There is no rule - the number of colors makes it. If, therefore, a color does not seem to fit into the concept, simply reduce the amount of this color while working, and see if it works better. Or, on the contrary, increase the amount of a color and test the new effect. Changes in color have a great influence on the overall picture. I am concerned with developing beautiful color combinations and not being caught up in theories. Chantal Stalder, Switzerland

1) Well waxed and clean A well-waxed thread has many advantages. The wax helps to hold the nylon fibers together and cuts down on fraying and knotting. For the fishing line threads [aka braided cords], I recom mend stripping off the factory coating and re-waxing it yourself. The reason: some coatings leave a dark residue on your hands and the mat. Then you get dark particles stuck in the bead holes. The exist ing coating can be easily stripped with the use of a paper towel. Then, re-wax it yourself, preferably with a microcrystalline bead wax.

Protecting your thread When you are stitching a project, it is a good idea to move your needle up a little bit every few stitches. This will avoid creating a weak spot in your thread, which could lead to your thread breaking. Regina Payne, USA A trick for decreasing in round peyote stitc h 1. Pass through the two seed beads, one of whic h is to be skipped. 2. Pick up 1 new seed bead. 3. Thread again through both seed beads from step 1. Thus, the new seed bead from step 2 is place d centr ally over the two existing beads in the previous round. In this way the beads are sitting closer together and there is no large visible hole at the point of decreasing . This is, for example, very useful for beading around eggs or large beads. Baroque Buttons bracelet

www.etsy.com/de/shop/crimsonfrog

94

Go down new jewelry paths: shimmering fabrics such as dupion (aka dupioni) silk are embroidered with mother-of-pearl buttons and beads. Designed by Kinga Nichols, USA

The artist describes here an idea for making jewelry, in which a fine-quality embroidery foundation contributes to the radiance. As she is more concerned with the How-tos of the technique, there is no exact materials list. Each button has a different size, so different amounts of beads are needed for bezeling and decorating. Kinga Nichols: “My goal was to design a techniquebased project that could be applied to many other jewelry projects. If you look at the 5 bracelets and the pendant that came after this basic idea, you have an idea of what is possible. Follow it closely, or develop this idea further!” ‡ Perlen Poesie ‡ 33 ‡ 2017 ‡

1 Determine the shape of the bracelet, using the photo for orientation. The length should be about 1 cm (1/2˝) more that the circumference of the wrist. The width should be adjusted to the buttons to be worked. Cut out the embroidery foundation.

2 Use the glue stick to adhere it to the silk and cut it out all around, adding some selvedge, as silk tends to fray heavily. Artist’s tip: The glue stick holds the fabric in place, but it’s also possible, after it dries, to easily pass through the glued surface; furthermore, it doesn’t go through the thin silk fabric. So please DO NOT use E6000 here!

4

4 Cut 2 circles out of the embroidery foundation fabric slightly smaller than the largest button. Cut a hole in the middle of each circle.

5

3 Roll the silk over the edge of the embroidery foundation and sew it all around, working with invisible stitches on the front! It’s not necessary to additionally glue it. Artist’s tip: Silk is difficult to clean. Therefore, be sure to take a break if you stick your finger and bleed!!

6

5 Glue the circles together with E6000 and glue them to the back of the button.

6 Glue the padded button in the middle of the bracelet with E6000.

Knowledge of pearl embroidery is a prerequisite.

Materials

The sizes are variable 1. Embroidery foundation according to your personal preference (Beading foundation/ Beadsmith, Lacey’s Stiff Stuff, Nicole’s backing). 2. Thin fabric larger than the bracelet (used: Dupion silk in silver with a gold shimmer, this silk often has beautiful coloring effects, making it perfect for jewelry projects). 3. Buttons (used: mother-of-pearl buttons in different sizes, the largest one with a diameter of 40 mm (2“) is the center of the piece. For a small wrist you should choose a smaller one. You also need 1 mother-of-pearl button with a 20 mm diameter and a total of 8 smaller ones). 4. Seed beads 11° (sb11) for the bezels and seed beads 15° (sb15) for tapering the bezels (used: seed beads 11° light gray lined transparent, seed beads 15° gold, these are also used for decorating the edge). 5. Mini Dagger or Rizos (here: Mini Dagger hematite), Miyuki Drops (here: 3.4 mm silver-lined crystal), Swarovski Crystal Pearls or Czech faux pearls in different sizes (light grey), Swarovski Bicones 3 mm

(chrysolite AB 2x), Miyuki Baroque Pearls 6° (ivory baroque), a few Swarovski Lochrosen for surface decoration of the buttons. 6. Clasp of your choice (recommended: Elegant Elements or Claspgarten clasps). 7. Fabric for the back (used: leather with a metallic finish. Ultrasuede or another non-fraying fabric is also suitable, but gets soiled more quickly). Thread (used: Nanofil 8 lb light green – a material from the same manufacturer as FireLine, but more stable, thinner and with less tendency to twist; it’s best to use it doubled when working with sharp-edged materials such as bicones). 1 beading or embroidery needle (used: Tulip #11) 1 scissors E6000 adhesive instant adhesive (super glue) glue stick for paper

7 Stitch 1 round of backstitch around the button, inserting 2 sb11 each time, making sure to have an even number in total, and to not stitch the beads too close together.

8 Work several rounds of sb11 in peyote using backstitch, until the beads protrude beyond the edge of the button. Don’t forget to step up in each round.

9 Work 2 more rounds with sb15 in peyote to taper the bezel.

10

11

12

10 Using a doubled thread, go forward to one of the middle peyote rounds. Pick up 1 Crystal Pearl 3mm and pass through the following sb11 of this round. Repeat all around.

13

11 Skipping one peyote round, go up to the second and alternately insert 1 Mijuki Drop and 1 sb15. Also sew the button to the embroidery foundation to secure it.

14

96

12 Choose a smaller button to be attached to the main element. Prepare this one exactly as you did the large button with the difference that the button is not yet to be glued on and the round in backstitch with sb11 will begin on the bottommost circle of embroidery foundation fabric. Work about 3 rounds with sb11 in peyote, finishing with 1 round with Mini Daggers. Continue working in peyote with sb11. To taper the final round, work 1 round with sb15 in peyote.

17 13 Work 1 round in peyote in the middle over the daggers, alternating 1 Crystal Pearl 3 mm and 1 bicone 3 mm.

15

14 Glue the prepared button in the middle of the large button with E6000. Be sure to additionally sew through the buttonholes of the underlying button and the embroidery foundation to secure it.

16

15 Using super glue and/or E6000, glue a small cabochon onto a slightly larger button. Glue both in the middle of the button. Artist’s tip: She used a combination of the two different adhesives, as one dries very quickly, so that she can work faster in this way and doesn’t have to wait until the E6000 has dried. This is important for stability.

16 Scatter the rest of the buttons on the remaining embroidery foundation according to your personal taste, glue them in place with E6000 and sew through the buttonholes to secure them. ‡ Perlen Poesie ‡ 33 ‡ 2017 ‡

17 Glue a smaller button on the 20 mm button and secure it with a Crystal Pearl 3 mm with doubled thread. Surround the button in backstitch with sb11 and work one round in peyote with sb11. Work 1 round in peyote with drops and to finish, work 2 more rounds with sb15. Surround both of the other buttons with 1 round in backstitch with sb11, then work 1 round in peyote with sb11 and 1 round in peyote with sb15. In the middle of the first button, pick up 1 Baroque Pearl 6° and 1 sb11 as turning bead; pass through the Baroque Pearl and the button through to the back. In the middle of the second bead, pick up 1 Lochrose and 1 sb15 as turning bead. Pass through the Lochrose and the button to the back.

Beadweaving 18

18 On the other side of the bracelet above the largest button, glue on 1 decorative button. Also sew 1 Crystal Pearl 5 mm in the middle. Work a bezel out of 1 round in backstitch with sb11, 2 rounds in peyote with sb11 and 1 round in peyote with sb15.

20

20 Transfer the outer shape of the bracelet to the material for the back and cut it out. Sew the clasp onto the narrow sides of the bracelet. Spread E6000 over the large area on the back of the embroidered part, but do not apply it directly to the edges of the element so that the edge for the subsequent edge decoration is easy to pierce. Press both parts together. Let dry. If necessary, trim back the edges of the backing material.

19

19 Bezel both remaining buttons on the opposite side in the same way. Fasten 1 button in the middle with 1 Crystal Pearl 3 mm. Embroider the second button with 1 Lochrose and 1sb15 as turning bead, sewing through the Lochrose and the button to the back. Then embroider the visible silk background on

both sides of the main element with a few loosely arranged Baroque Pearls in stopstitch, using 1 sb11 as turning bead. Do not, however, completely cover the background so that the beautiful silk remains visible. It is best to begin with tightly embroidered beads on both sides of the main element and gradually reduce the number as you work towards the ends of the bracelet.

21

21 Decorate the edge using brick stitch, sewing through both layers. For the variation used here with bicones, use doubled thread. Knot a new long piece of thread, secure it in the work piece and sew through both layers directly next to the edge by the clasp. Pick up 1 sb15, 1 bicone 3 mm and 1 sb15. Leaving a little distance, sew through both layers and back through the sb15. Pick up 1 bicone 3mm and 1 sb15, leaving a little distance, sew through both layers and back through the sb15. Work through to the end of both of the long edges of the bracelet in this manner to finish.
