Introduction The Sherlock Holmes cold reading approach is becoming more and more popular thanks to hundreds of TV shows and movies that are appearing for many years. “The Mentalist”, “Psych”, more recently “Forever”,. . . and of course all the series and movies about the Sherlock Holmes character himself. The appealing of this theme is the believability, but also spectators like to know the “why” more than the “what”. If you present yourself as an expert of the human behavior, or as a psychological illusionist, you need a way to show the ability to analyze people solely watching their hands, as seen on the screens. Here I will provide you a script to do an analytic hand reading, based on scientific studies, stock lines, classic palmistry meanings, and common sense. In the script there would be parts that you could apply and others that you could not, for example the part about rings. So, it’s important you choose, if you can, someone with interesting hands. Sometimes I’ll provide you with a line for you to say, other times I only give some keywords for you to expand on a reading. Anyway, the most important thing is that you use your own words. Don’t memorize the text of this book, instead try to write your own lines. To do that it’s important you practice alone in your house doing readings out loud. If you find some particular phrases you like write them down, but don’t try to memorize even these, only read them from time to time. What is important for you to memorize is the structure and the different meanings or keywords. This is really easy, because most of the meanings already make sense. After the script I’ll suggest you some ways to use this reading.

Watch Look for his watch: • If he wears watch that could means respect and admiration to father figure. • If he has the watch in his right hand: he is probably left handed. • If he has the watch in his dominant hand: don’t like to follow the crowd, don’t like traditions. • Clock face in the inner side of the arm: gentle, willing, compliant. Type of watch: • Analog: traditional, classic. • Digital: modern, contemporary. • In men, a nice or expensive watch could be an engagement gift in some countries. As a rule of thumb you could say that if his watch looks much more expensive than his shoes —relatively speaking— then the watch is a gift for someone very close to him (wife or father). • There are special watches for different sports like golf (with GPS), running (with heart rate monitor),. . . Take notice. If he doesn’t wear a watch you can say him: “You can not go too far from your cellphone, you’re almost addict”.

Hands If you can not guess if he is right or left handed just ask, or simply make an educated guess and say he is right handed, you will be right most of the times. You can justify this by the pocket he puts the wallet in, the cellphone or whatever. Later I will give you more clues to determine his dominant hand. If he’s left handed: “In the school you felt different to the others children, and for a long time you tried to change yourself so that others accept you. At the end it just didn’t care to you.” Ask him to show you his hands. Depending on the way he presents his hands to you: • Cupped: shy. • Flat: self-confident. • Extended to the limit: extroverted, authoritarian.

Fingers Thumbs Ask the spectator to clasp his hands, interlocking all the fingers. Say: “Perhaps you already know that the human brain has two parts. The right side of the brain is best at expressive and creative tasks. It’s the intuitive side. In the other hand, the left side is better at logic and language. It’s the analytical side of the brain. But, as you know, the left side of the brain controls the right side of the body, and the right side of the brain controls the left side of the body. Now look at your thumbs.” Draw attention to his thumbs. Two things can happen: • Right thumb is over the left thumb: “This means that the left side of your brain is the dominant one, so you usually approach problems analyzing and talking about them with other people. You’re better with numbers than drawing, and when you think you usually talk in your head more than viewing images in your mind.” • Left thumb is over the right thumb: “This means that the right side of your brain is the dominant one, so you usually approach problems in a creative way, perhaps meditating on them and visualizing posible solutions, before talking about them with other people. You’re better with drawing than numbers, and when you think you usually visualize images in your mind more than talking to yourself in your head.” Note: While there is a real lateralization of brain functions, both parts of the brain work together. People are not right or left brained. So, if you want to be accurate you could add:

“Of course, the brain does not work the same way all the time. And there are times you surprise yourself doing things that you believed you couldn’t do.”

Fingers length Take his open hands and watch the length of her fingers compared with her palm: • Long fingers: “By the length of your fingers I’ll say that you’re better with mental works: intellectual or artistic works.” • Short fingers: “By the length of your fingers I’ll say that you’re better with physical or manual works.”

Index and ring fingers ratio Compare the lengths of the index and ring fingers. “It has been suggested by some scientific research that the ratio of this two fingers —point her index and ring fingers— is affected by exposure to testosterone while in the uterus.” Testosterone affects the degree of femininity of a person, so we will read both males and females differently: For a woman: • Index and ring finger have the same length: “These two fingers have the same length, that’s mean that you are a very sensitive person. You have great smell, color and tactile perception, but you tend to handle money badly. Also you prefer men with very masculine facial features.” • Index finger shorter than ring finger: “Your index finger is lower than the ring finger, that’s mean that you are very dominant. You’re a good student and have a natural ability with maths. You’re perhaps a good leader and very innovative.” 7

For a man: • Index and ring finger have the same length: “These two fingers have the same length, that’s mean that you are a very sensitive person. Also it’s more likely that you don’t like sports, and you’re bad managing money. In the other hand your exam scores are higher than the rest of your friends.” • Index finger shorter than ring finger: “Your index finger is lower than the ring finger, that’s mean that you’re very dominant, very competitive, even aggressive some times. And you get frustrated when you don’t get what you want. In the other hand you’re a good leader and very innovative. Also you’re quite good at maths. You’re very pleased with your body.”

Nails Turn her hands palms down and watch her nails.

Colors If the subject has painted nails use the color to do a reading. Briefly: • Red: passionate, impulsive. • Pink: cares appearance. • White: straightforward, honest, perfectionist. • Black: introvert. • Green or other inusual colors: very extrovert, does not care what other thinks about her.

Length • Short: office work, and/or with computers. • Long nails only in one hand or one finger: classic guitarist or flamenco. If the long nails are in his left hand he is left handed.

Appearance • Manicured nails: work dealing with public. • Bitten nails or wounds around: obsessive.

Skin Examine the hands all over, searching for something unusual: • Cracked and rough: this could be for several reasons: – Hard manual work. – Too much hand washing. This could be because: ∗ Work with food, children, dealing with clients, work with styling products,. . . ∗ Obsessive personality. • Dermatological problems (dermatitis, psoriasis,. . . ): worry too much, stressed. • Calluses: depending on the zone of the hand: – Middle finger (in the side): writing work. Could be a student or he works filling or signing a lot of forms or documents. – Base of fingers: could be for a sport like golf, bicycle or tennis. – Tips of fingers (only in one of the hands): string instrument player —guitar or bass are more likely—. If the calluses are in the right hand then he is left handed. • Cuts in fingers (thumbs, only in one of the hands): cook, chef, housekeeper or likes to cook. If the cuts are in his right thumb he is left handed.

Rings If there are rings examine their position and appearance. Also, look for marks in the fingers for missing rings, that could mean a recent break or a divorce, depending on the finger. If you want to appear that you know more than you want to tell you can look the rings and say: “Well, I’d better ignore this —look her and wink—.” Depending on her response you’ll have everything you need to continue.

Fingers • Rings in several fingers: does not want permanent emotional ties with anyone. • In thumb: reaffirm their personality and sexuality (the thumb points to himself). • In index finger: dominant person, want to impose himself (the index finger points to others). • In middle finger: emotional balance. • In ring finger: emotional connections. There are two options: – Simple ring: marriage (usually in the left hand, but it depends on the country). – Diamond and/or complex design: engagement (in the left hand, and in the right hand after the wedding, but again it depends on the country). • In little finger: independence, capricious. You can add the meanings for rings in different fingers. Many rings in the same finger reaffirm the meaning. 11

If the rings are in one of the hand and not in the other it could means that her dominant hand is the other.

Color/material • Gold: elegant, refined. • Silver: reserved, quiet. • Leather: friendly, down-to-earth. • For other colors use their traditional meanings: for blue calm and relaxed, for yellow energetic and vitality, for green balanced and righteous,. . . If you are very interested you could learn the different meanings and alleged properties of the different stones.

Others If the subject wears bracelets, wristbands, etc. you can use the meanings of the colors. If they have a written word or message you can use that. The same if he has tattoos. Colors, drawings, numbers,. . . You can apply the readings you already know as numerology, A-Z, doodles,. . .

Uses There are many ways you can use this reading. For example, I suggest you this effect: Ask a spectator to secretly write down in a paper his actual job. Then he has to write four other different jobs. Now, reading his hands you can discard the fake ones and guess his real job. Of course, instead of jobs you can use sports, hobbies or almost anything. For the method I use my own “The Impromptu Living & Dead Test” 1 , but I’m sure you can adapt it to a lot of routines you already perform. The key is that, as you already know his real job, you can match the reading with the job. For example, if you know he works in an office you can look for calluses in his middle finger, or if he seems to take care of his nails you can say he works with a computer, perhaps in an office. If the subject is a woman teacher you can say that their hands indicate that she works with persons, and as the nails are short and don’t wear any rings perhaps she works with children. And so on, just imagine the job and how he uses his hands at work and look for evidences. Also, you can turn this reading in a major effect. For example, using the thumbs reading part, you can ask everybody in the audience to clasp their hands and then explain how the brain has two parts and so on. This way, all spectators have their own reading.

References To learn the classic palm reading approach the best source is “Palm Readings In Your Own Words” by Julian Moore. Also he teach very well how to do readings with your own words. The book “Out In The Cold” by TC Tahoe, has a lot of nice stock lines for you to use along with this reading. Finally, these are links to know more about some interesting scientific research about hands and brain: • Fingers ratio • Left-brain vs right-brain

Closing As you’ve seen, I don’t justify all the readings. It’s not necessary. Some of them are based on scientific evidences or common sense, but others are going to work because of the Forer effect. And that’s all. Don’t try to memorize all this at once, instead learn piece by piece and incorporate it gradually into your current repertory. See you in the next Mind Note!
