COURSE GUIDE FOR EDUC 2 – THE TEACHING PROFESSION “Are You Ready? Set, Go!” My dear students, welcome to our class in Educ 2 – The Teaching Profession. I am your course professor, Dr. Nestor N. Miña from the College of Education who is on active government service for 38 years in my teaching journey. This course is one of the series of Professional Education [Prof Ed] courses designed for students in pre service education who will be teachers in the future. As we start the first semester for the academic year 2020-2021, we wish you all the best as we navigate our path forward in this time of pandemic. This material is your guide in successfully navigating and finishing this course. Read this material very carefully before starting any lesson in this course because it outlines all information and requirements that you need to complete this 3-unit course. 1. Course Introduction This course deals with the understanding of the roles of teacher as a person and as a professional within the context of national and global teachers’ standards, educational philosophies and legal bases. It includes knowledge of core values that uphold the dignity of the teaching profession, discussion of the code of ethics for professional teachers, and awareness and understanding of existing laws and jurisprudence governing professional rights, privileges and responsibilities, and teachers’ roles in the society as transformative agents of change. 2. Course Learning Outcomes At the end of the semester, you should be able to: 1. Demonstrate understanding of the philosophical, historical, legal socio-cultural and political factors that influence a profession teaching and its development as a profession; 2. Articulate a personal philosophy of teaching that is learner-centered; 3. Demonstrate understanding of existing laws and related jurisprudence governing professional ethics, professional rights, privileges and responsibilities; 4. Manifest dignity in the teaching profession through caring attitude, respect, and integrity in teaching; 5. Formulate a plan to realize professional development goals based on the Philippine Professional Standards for Teachers. 3. Target Learners and Prerequisites

As stated in the course introduction, the target learners for the course are 1st year BUCE BSED students. Before taking this course, though, there is no prerequisite course, you are expected to acquire basic knowledge in the previous courses taken. 4. Note: On the first week of classes, please inform me of the types of students you belong [c/o student facilitator in-charge of GC/class] and your preferred mode of delivery. Course Structure The course is divided into five [5] Learning Contents/Topics and further divided into subtopics. Some topics/sub-topics have their own Activity Sheets with corresponding learning activities, and self-assessment. You are expected to finish all these lessons/activities within the 18 week period. Each activity is given a week for submission of output after performing the task. A web quest/book reading should be made for the given topic in order for you to gather enough information before doing the individual task. 7. Course Requirements/Assessment Activities The assessment that will be is categorized into two; formative and summative. For the formative assessment, you will encounter Self-assessment questions in every activity that are intended to assist/help you in learning and validate your gained knowledge in each lesson, this will not be recorded or graded. However, please find time to do these. Summative assessment will be recorded and graded. It will be in three [3] forms: a. Written work [Individual Activities submitted/uploaded on a weekly basis. b. Major outputs per term [one for midterm and the other for final term]. The details of each major output is reflected in the course guide for your reference. c. Major exams per term [Midterm and Final Examinations]. The major exams scheduled online via Google Classroom 8. Grading System As indicated in the course syllabus, your course performance will be evaluated based on the following criteria: Midterm/Tentative Final Grade: Final Grade Computation: Lesson activities 30 % FG = 1/3 Midterm +2/3 [Tentative Final} Class Participation 15 % Major Output/Project 25 % Major Exam 30 % 9. Learning Resources To help you in your independent learning, resources will be made available along the duration of the course and will be available in the course site. However, for learners with poor internet connection may schedule time to connect to university Wi-Fi and download all term materials. The learning resources are: 1. Activity Sheets/Worktexts They will be prepared in selected topics / lessons, and are uploaded in the course site/GC via Messenger. Each Activity sheet has its own Learning Outcomes using the 4As model, and guide questions to answer. You are required to read all the lessons and take the self-assessment by answering all questions provided. You will also find the activities to be uploaded in your class GC via Messenger which you need to accomplish and submit on the indicated date upon receipt on a weekly basis in this email [email protected] Your Individual Output should be encoded, arial 11, short bond paper following the given format to appear at the left-hand corner of the paper.
