Trainer Preparation Guide for Course 10979F: Introduction to Microsoft Azure for IT Professionals Design of the Course This course is intended for Information Technology (IT) professionals who have a limited knowledge of cloud technologies and want to learn more about Microsoft Azure. This course provides the underlying knowledge required by all individuals who will be evaluating Azure, whether they are administrators, developers, or database administrators. This course also provides the prerequisite knowledge for students wanting to attend Course 20532: Developing Microsoft Azure Solutions, or Course 20533: Implementing Microsoft Azure Infrastructure Solutions. When you teach this course, you will likely have students with a wide range of expertise. Try to gauge their experience level early in the course. You then can use this information to tailor your course delivery to meet their needs. This course introduces the principles of cloud computing. Students will become familiar with how these principles have been implemented in Microsoft Azure. Additionally, this course explains how to implement the core Azure infrastructure, consisting of virtual networks and storage. With this foundation, students will be able to create the most common Azure services, including Azure Virtual Machines, Web Apps, and Azure SQL Database. The students will also learn about container-based Azure services and the most prominent examples of serverless computing. The course concludes by describing features of Azure Active Directory (Azure AD). Module 1, “Getting started with Microsoft Azure” introduces cloud services and the various Azure services. It describes how to use the Azure portal to access and manage Azure services, and to manage Azure subscriptions and billing. Module 2, “Microsoft Azure management tools” describes how to use Azure PowerShell to manage your Azure subscription. This module also describes how to use the Azure Software Development Kit (SDK) and the Azure cross-platform command-line tool to manage your Azure subscription. Module 3, “Virtual machines in Microsoft Azure” describes how to create and configure VMs in Azure, and how to manage their disks. Module 4, “Azure Web Apps” explains how to create, configure, and monitor web apps in Azure. Module 5, “Introduction to Azure networking” explains how to create and implement Azure networks and how to use their components to enhance the resiliency and availability of virtual machines. Module 6, “Introduction to Azure Storage and Data Services” describes the features and benefits of Azure storage and data services. Module 7, “Introduction to containers and serverless computing in Azure” explains the options for implementing containers and describes the serverless technologies available in Azure. Module 8, “Creating and managing Azure AD” describes how to create users, domains, and directories in Azure AD, integrate applications with Azure AD, and use Microsoft Azure Multi-Factor Authentication.

Working knowledge of Active Directory concepts and management



Working knowledge of database concepts, including tables and simple queries



Working knowledge of containers and serverless technologies for Azure



Working knowledge of Azure administration tools including Microsoft Visual Studio Community, Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio, and Windows PowerShell

If you are using on-premises labs, become familiar with the course’s virtual machines and how you set up and configure them. This includes understanding the base images, mid-tier files, and activation states. Practice setting up the classroom by following the instructions in the Microsoft Hyper-V Classroom Setup Guide.



If you are using third-party hosted labs for Microsoft Courseware, become familiar with how you configure and access the labs. Ensure that you are ready to demonstrate their use to students and work with the lab hoster who provides trainer access for course preparation. You can purchase thirdparty hosted labs for Microsoft Courseware for use during course delivery at the same time you order the course materials. Important If you are intending to use third-party hosted labs for Microsoft Courseware, you need to ensure that full lab coverage is available before use. This is because of the presence of Boot-to-VHD labs in some courses and the modifications to some lab steps that are required to facilitate a hosted lab platform. There are no Bootto-VHD or native boot scenarios in the labs in this course.



If you are using Digital Microsoft Official Courses (MOC) via the Skillpipe reader by Arvato, become familiar with how you access and configure the digital content to ensure smooth setup and access for students. You also should ensure that everything is in place for students to have a smooth experience when signing in and accessing their content for the first time. You can purchase Digital MOC for use during course delivery when you order the course materials.



This course requires access to Azure to be able to complete the demonstrations and labs. As such, you need to request Microsoft Learning Azure Passes for you and your students. Students then need to register and activate their pass prior to the class starting. You should request Microsoft Learning Azure Passes at least two weeks before the class is due to start to allow sufficient time for this.

Details of how to acquire Microsoft Azure Passes for your class are available here: http://aka.ms/mocazurepass Once students receive their Azure Pass codes, they should then activate their Microsoft Learning Azure Passes before class starts by following the steps outlined at the following site: https://www.microsoftazurepass.com/Home/HowTo The use of publicly available trial subscriptions or other types of passes, such as MSDN, is possible with the course labs. However, the labs have not been tested with every available pass type, so variations in functionality (while unlikely) are possible due to potential Azure subscription limitations. The scripts that you use in the labs will also delete any existing services or components present in Azure under the subscription that you use. Therefore, using the Microsoft Learning Azure Pass will provide a level of standardization, in addition to helping prevent any inadvertent removal or interference with existing Azure infrastructure. You also should remind students to follow the best practices for Microsoft Learning Azure Pass usage to ensure the pass does not expire during the class. General best practices are explained on the Microsoft Learning Azure Pass slide in the Module 0 PowerPoint deck. 

Course Timing

The following schedule is an estimate of the course timing. Your timing might vary. Not every student will finish every lab. Use your judgment to set a reasonable time to move on to the next module. This schedule has been developed to provide about six hours of training per day. Each day starts at 9:00 A.M. and ends between 4:30 and 5:00 P.M. and includes two 15-minute breaks and one hour for lunch. Each day also includes time to review the previous day’s topics and to answer questions from the students. Be realistic about your timings.
