Altered Scale Chord Cycles Practice Routines Routine 1: Use the following routine with each individual Stage 1 Progression. Play 16th notes, one measure per chord. Use mixolydian bop scale for measures 1 and 3, altered scale for measures 2 and 4. 1. 2. 3.
4. 5.
Start each scale on the root. Play for notes, freely out of time descending (down) and ascending (up). You may omit this step Play each scale at a comfortable starting tempo e.g. q =80, down, up, alternating down/up, alternating up/down. Use play along track Sing each scale while playing your instrument with inner hearing. At first, use all four directions as in the preceeding step. The two alternating forms are sufficient once you become comfortable. Play the scales again on your instrument. Increase tempo toward goal e.g. q =150 Repeat steps 1-4 for each of the following starting pitches. 3rd for mixolydian bop, #9 for altered 5th for mixolydian bop, b5 (#11) for altered 7th for mixolydian bop, b13 for descending altered, b7 for ascending altered
Routine 2: Now, use the following practice sequences for each individual progression Practice Sequence 1: From Root 1. down 2. up 3. alternate down/up 4. alternate up/down From 3rd / #9 5. down 6. up 7. alternate down/up 8. alternate up/down From 5th / b5 9. down 10. up 11. alternate down/up 12. alternate up/down From 13. 7th / b13 down 14. 7th up 15. alternate 7th down/up 16. alternate 7th up/ b13 down
Build tempo for each progression, end by Sing/ Play with inner hearing From Root • alternate down/up • alternate up/down From 3rd / #9 • alternate down/up • alternate up/down From 5th / b5 • alternate down/up • alternate up/down From • •
alternate 7th down/up alternate 7th up/ b13 down
Practice Sequence 2: Down from 1. root 2. 3rd 3. 5th 4. 7th / b13 Up from 5. root 6. 3rd 7. 5th 8. 7th Alternate down/up 9. root 10. 3rd 11. 5th 12. 7th Alternate up/down 13. root 14. 3rd 15. 5th 16. 7th / b13
Build tempo for each progression, end by Sing/ Play with inner hearing Alternate down/up • root • 3rd • 5th • 7th Alternate up/down • root • 3rd • 5th • 7th / b13 Move on to next progression

Routine 3: For each progression… Altered Scale Chord Cycles – Stage 1 Practice Routines -1-
1/24/2002
1. 2. 3.
Use One of the 16 step practice sequences from routine 2. Now work on connecting mixolydian bop to its partner altered scales. Play scales in free-time. Improvise. Vary your choice of starting pitches, connections, anticipation and delay. Do free-time and slowly with accompaniment track.
Routine 4: May be done independently of or in conjunction with routine 2 or 3. For each progression… Play eight notes (7 note versions of each scale). Add two new directions: • Continuous down/down • Continuous up/up
