ANATE
 [Simplex Killer] By Dee Christopher

 Effect

Based on Kenton's Kollosal Killer, this is a thought of card in wallet. This method however slims it down to fit inside any normal wallet or envelope. A Spectator is told that you have a card in your wallet - they are asked to name a number for the value of the card, then they are asked to name the suit that this card is. The card is tipped out to show that your prediction is correct!

ANATE
Force I personally like to pronounce the above An-Ah-Tay. I fooled you though, your mind told you that itʼs definitely a word that youʼve heard somewhere before when in reality I made it up. An-8. Thatʼs the key. Keep reading for further details.

Set-Up
This effect relies on a very simple linguistic technique and suggestion. It requires you to have only four cards in your wallet, or if wished, two double faced cards. You will need to take the eights of each suit from the deck. (or two double facers, for the purposes of this explanation, we'll assume that you are using 4 regular cards.) Put these 4 cards in different pockets of your wallet, or perhaps in one pocket Which ever is your preference. I like to put them in different pockets as then it allows me to show the pocket empty aside from this card.

 Method
The method is very, very simple. It's based on a psychological subtlety which is very effective and very sneaky! Essentially, in the script, you will tell them to say the number eight, very directly, but in such a way that they'll never pick it up. The first thing we need to do is to get the person feeling good about the effect and opening then up to the suggestion. The script will be delivered in a forward manner and the final words should emphasize the naming of a number swiftly so they will name the number that perfectly fits. The secret is the word "An." out of all single digit numbers, only the number eight will ever be preceded by the word an. for an example of this in context: "I have a card in my wallet - If I was to ask you to name any number as our value, it would be an...?" Eight is the only logical answer. You asked for a number and said the word an as a precursor to the value. If the spectator doesn't pick up on the fact you said number, the only other option

is for them to say "ace" which sounds very similar to eight. If this does happen, you simply move onto the suit selection and in the re-cap you say eight as opposed to ace - I've had to do this on a couple of occasions and no one has called me out on it yet! So, just as a further mention on the reason why this works, see the notes below. In regular sentence, the following would be relevant: - A Two - A Three - A Four - A Five - A Six - A Seven - An Eight - A Nine - A Ten The way the script is delivered is also important. I'll outline the full script later on, but I raise the pitch of my voice slightly on the word "an" to emphasize that it's a question and I put focus on the "N" syllable so that the "eight" is almost rolling off my tongue! I reach my hand out to indicate that they should complete the sentence. Once the number eight is selected, any suit could be selected, this could be taken a stage further with some form of equivoque to force a suit, but I find that having 4 cards in my wallet is absolutely fine - It allows for a much clearer presentation. Of course, once we have the value and suit, we re-cap and flip open the wallet to show that the prediction is correct!

Full
Script
This looks like a pretty ordinary deck of cards, correct? *Show a boxed deck of cards* Well, there is in fact a single card missing from within. Before coming to the performance today I placed a single card in my wallet. *Place deck on table and bring wallet out to show. The wallet should stay in view at all times to remove thought of switching.* Sir, I'm not going to psychologically influence you in any way, but I'd like you to play mind reader for a moment, is that ok? Great! Now, let's choose a value for the card, if I was to ask you to name a number value for the card sir it would be an...? *Use cues as discussed* An eight? Perfect. Now lets choose a suit - What suit do you think the card might be? Hearts? Fantastic! - Have you done this before? You can see here, just a single card in a single wallet, your eight of hearts!

Outs
There are several ways to get out if the force misses. Following advice from my good friend Andrew Mayne, I conducted a little survey and found that the force for me fails on about one out of five people. Donʼt be put off by the statistic however, in real world performance Iʼve failed much less than this – The pressure of being put on the spot during a performance opens people up so much more to suggestions I have found. Just believe that what you are doing will work and it generally will. The first would be to look at it in a different way. Say the person said the number two. The script could follow the below: “Two? Interesting – Throughout the script previous, I was trying to suggest a number to you. While there wasnʼt a card in my wallet at all, the idea allowed me to plant a seed and anchor what I was subliminally suggesting. Well done! You caught on, which tells me that youʼd be perfect for this next demonstration!” Itʼs such a simple get out, but works wonders – Of course, this can work with any psyche force you employ, itʼs a very versatile out. If you would prefer to have an out for if the force misses that carries on with the effect, I would recommend looking into the following to allow you to achieve this. Kollosal Killer: Kentonʼs original effect, this allows you to pull a named card from your wallet, it fits in one regular looking wallet and can have a very effective twist at the end! Bang-On: An effect by Marc Oberon, Bang-On uses up a bit more pocket space, but allows you to cleanly show that the named card is the only card in an envelope you have in your wallet. I have used this particular version hundreds of times at many, many gigs and itʼs great! Advocate: A tool by Daniel Madison, A very effective tool which takes up no more room than a normal deck of cards and allows you to pull a freely named card from pretty much anywhere!

Final
Notes
This is a very clean and convincing piece. Really simple in method, it just takes a bold approach and a little confidence! I find that the little subtleties are what make this really believable. The addition of showing and mentioning the deck is a very positive point. I often let the spectator hold the deck as they divine the card. After speaking with Colin McLeod, I found that the script could be altered to include a line to defer the spectator from choosing an ace if this is something you worry about – You simply need to say: “Do me a favor, donʼt choose an ace – Everyone does!” I do find that this adds unnecessary thinking time to the effect – you want the spectators to just finish your sentence as opposed to creating their own. This could be a useful technique to some, but I think it add suspicion to the selection of the number, you want to appear not to slim the choice they have down. I look forward to hearing everyoneʼs thoughts on the “an 8” technique – It could be used to force this number in any routine. Iʼve listed further applications below: The magician lays a folded note on the table; the spectator names the number written on its face. You could also consider having them hold the note. Or to be really naughty – You could write the number in such a way that the spectator can just see that there is an eight written through the paper! You would only want to employ this technique on a very friendly spectator whoʼs up for a bit of fun. If I ever use instant stooging of this degree, Iʼll put all the focus on the person being a mind reader and having fun – See the effect Morse in my 23:23 notes for further details.

A playing card is placed on the table/held in the magicianʼs fingertips and the spectator divines the card. You can use a simple equivoque, or magicianʼs choice force, to close in on a color and then a suit – The An-8 force will complete the job for you!

Ten cups are line up on the table. The spectator is asked to turn away and the magician places an object under one of the cups. The spectator turns around and reveals where the object is placed. Another simple force can be employed here. After the spectator turns back around you will wave your hand over the cups, your hand should hover over the 8th cup (where youʼve hidden the object) as you say the bolded text, emphasis should also be placed on these words in the form of a vocal pitch shift or dynamic shift: “Iʼve placed your object under one of these cups. You will feel that one of these cups is drawing you in.” You can then carry on with the standard number script. Generally, they will take the suggestion. If they do not, you can separate the cups into half and equivoque half away, then repeat to find the object. As another out, equivoque 4 of the cups away by splitting into a six and a four, about half, and use the classic hot rod force. To learn this force, you can pick up a hot rod from any magic dealer.

As you can see from the few examples above, this force can be applied to lots of other routines, the best thing about it is that you can easily discuss these routines in public forums and itʼs very simple to explain quite a lot without tipping the core method!

I must credit the following for their work on similar techniques and subjects: Banachek | Knepper | Jermay | Oberon | Madison I would also like to thank you for your purchase and hope that you will take note of all the little tips and tricks in this booklet, it will surely help you to create a fantastic illusion of precognition.
