WHAT MAKES A GOOD BATHROOM? An interview with Philippe Grohe, head of the Axor brand and grandson of the company founder.

Hansgrohe is a company with a long-standing tradition of technical innovation. When did design become and integral part of this? Axor was established in 1993, but even before that time Hansgrohe had already produced technically impressive products including Showers and mixers. Of course, these also looked good. In other words, design has always been a key area at Hansgrohe. By exchanging ideas with other designers we wanted to complement our ideas on the bathroom of the future with visions, lifestyles and trends that go beyond the product. That gives life and emotions to the room. This is something that we cannot do alone. And it is something that cannot be achieved by just one designer. We therefore trust in several creative designers. You have already worked in conjunction with many of the world’s most prestigious designers. Do you appoint a new designer for each collection? We now partner with a number of international designers and architects with whom we hold regular open discussions. Some have already developed two or three collections with us. How much freedom do you give the designers? We put our full trust in our designers’ visions and powers of innovation. When we first spoke to one of the most famous designers of our time, we truly experienced the big bang. The first complete bathroom with mixers, showers, wash basins, bath tub and WC was created from a single source. Philippe Starck’s bathroom. It was a revolution. Since then, has it been about more than just mixers? It certainly has, it’s about the entire room, an atmosphere and above all, a new way of looking at life and how we use water in the bathroom. For

this reason, we choose our design partners very carefully, as they have to consider every aspect of how the space will feel and how it is going to be used, not simply how it looks. They ensure that the space works as a cohesive whole, coordinated and complete. In addition to the mixers and showers, we also work with them to develop the wash basins, bath tubs, accessories and of course, general bathroom solutions. You look for designers with different, sometimes even highly conflicting, styles and attitudes. What do you regard as fruitful cooperation with creative minds? For Axor, the designer’s vision is at the fore. Designers should develop their own personal bathroom. We do not regard them as suppliers, but as creative partners with whom we can exchange ideas as equals. During this process, each of the partners offers their own expertise. From our perspective, this is our water and industrial bathroom expertise as well as a certain design culture. To what extent have the requirements for bathrooms changed over time? The bathroom is changing from a place of hygiene to a place for living. This is partly attributable to our lifestyle habits. In the past, we had extremely close ties to nature. Now, our lives are dominated by an urban world and hectic everyday situations. We therefore have a growing need for a sense of tranquillity and a natural experience. More and more people are discovering the bathroom as a place for relaxation and wellbeing. It is not without a little pride that we believe we have made an important contribution to this. Antonio Citterio once said that we only have to stand under the shower for 30 seconds to get clean. So why do we shower for three or five minutes? Because it changes how we feel afterwards. Showering is like doing an hour of yoga. However, wellbeing also means using a great deal of water, which naturally poses a major technical challenge for us. After all, one thing is clear: we have to conserve the precious commodity of water.

The French designer is among the leading representatives of the nature-inspired design. He often finds the models for his designs and architecture in nature. There is no disputing that the “Truffle” lounge chair resembles the source of his inspiration. His latest masterpiece, the Mexican “Chivas” football stadium, harmoniously blends in to the volcanic landscape.

p As far back as 2005, Jean-Marie Massaud realised his ideal vision of a bathroom within the scope of the Axor WaterDream. For him, this is a symbiosis of the natural elements of fire, water, earth and air.

All new Axor collections start with a personal vision. For Jean-Marie Massaud, the bathroom is a living space in which technology disappears and the focus falls instead on emotional experiences and the associated comfort and convenience. In describing his WaterDream project, in 2005, he commented: “I visualise a lake in the heart of the countryside. I want to feel like I’m sitting by a camp fire, listening to music and sipping champagne, and simply clear my mind.” A feeling of complete relaxation.

Jean-Marie Massaud starts by considering the room in which his occupier is residing. He defines wellbeing as a holistic concept and lets water, man and space melt into one.

FROM WATER DREAM TO A DREAM BATHROOM . During the design process, the vision of the dream bathroom develops into a harmonious work that combines architecture, materials, lighting and bathroom products. All the creative partners that work with Axor think beyond the actual product and its pure functionality for personal hygiene purposes. Through discussions between the designers and architects, Axor develops different concepts for the room and its use.

Does a dream bathroom have to be large? “Not at all” insists Philippe Grohe in contradiction of the prevailing opinion that designer bathrooms cannot be created without a sizeable room. “It is not the size of the bathroom that determines the quality, but the basic elements that convey the idea of the room concept.” The designers’ central room and usage concepts can

also be realised in small rooms and thus consider people’s highly individual needs. There is good reason why most of the creative minds Axor choose to work with are also architects or interior designers, they work with Axor to develop solutions and planning aids for both large and small areas.

In Jean-Marie Massaud’s idea of the perfect bathroom, the resident brings the experience of nature into the home. In this regard, the designer first designs the room and then, in a second stage introduces the products whose design complements the idea of the nature-inspired room. The complete bathroom collection has therefore been designed in the characteristic organic style: pebbles, branches, logs and grass inspire an extraordinary collection. The body of the most striking product, the single lever mixer, resembles a blade of grass. Together with the archetypal shelf, the mixer becomes a functional

sculpture. In addition to the mixer, wash basin and bath tub, nature has also provided the inspiration for the accessories. Axor has developed a vanity box, candlestick, soap dish, vase, toothbrush tumbler and towel holder in line with the French designer’s sketches and desires. The towel holder cites Massaud’s philosophy as a branching tree, the vase celebrates the ritual use of water and the box and the candlestick resemble pebbles that would caress the hand.

“CLEAR, PURE AND BEAUTIFUL LIKE A NATURAL WATERFALL.” In the Axor WaterDream, Massaud manifested the philosophy that a mixer’s technical aspects should be hidden in the background. He moves away from pure control units while also wanting to provide an additional benefit. So what does a mixer look like if it is more than just a tap? “What Massaud presented to us”, commented Philippe Grohe, “was absolutely futuristic and a little crazy.” But most of all, it was simply brilliant. Axor therefore did everything it could to turn his idea into a reality. “To make

the water flow quietly and smoothly out of the mixer’s spout, we had to completely re-design the interior workings of a mixer”, Horst Flieger, Head of the Hansgrohe Research and Development department, remembers. “Creating the optimum spray pattern was extremely challenging.” To create this elegant water jet, the experts at the Hansgrohe spray laboratory had to incorporate highly sophisticated technology into the flat plate. The result is clear: a mixer from which a beautiful waterfall flows; a particularly pleasant experience that uses little water.

p The designer Jean-Marie Massaud and the Axor development team were involved in intensive discussions for months on end. They regularly met for coordination meetings. After a development period of more than three years, Axor Massaud was finally launched on the market.

Design is not the only thing that shines. Every mixer and every shower is based on the roots of the Hansgrohe company, the demands of an innovative global player and a commitment to ensuring the best quality and German manufacture.

A brief glance at the production processes quickly shows onlookers that the plant does not manufacture mass-made products. In the two-floor hall, employees work on the designer products in several shifts. It takes a great deal of skill and expertise to turn the designers’ visions into reality.

The designer brand’s specially designated plant is located in the heart of Hansgrohe’s head office site. The Axor plant in Schiltach is one of five production sites in Germany. Here, German engineering meets years of tradition to create the more than 5,000 different products in the Axor collections. Workmanship marked by design and technology.

Their high requirements give rise to many different production stages. For example, these include precisely casting and cutting the mixers or subjecting the square-edged surfaces to even more intensive processing to ensure that they are optimally chrome-plated. The moulding blank is refined like a raw diamond in many individual stages until the final desired aesthetics are achieved. Even the base of the Axor Massaud mixer is hand-polished to a brilliant shine.

On first glance at the finished product, the laborious manufacturing process is not evident. The designer item undergoes numerous individual stages and quality controls before it finds it place in an Axor Massaud bathroom.

IT THEREFORE DESERVES OUR FULL RESPECT AND CONSIDERATION. ” KLAUS GROHE Jean-Marie Massaud’s philosophy of “nature-inspired design” is based on the idea of harmony between man, water and space. However, the interaction of design, technology and the careful use of our resources shapes every Axor project. In this regard, we value the precious commodities of water and energy. It is no wonder that this is also why the designers chose to work with Axor. It is most likely our location in the Black Forest that teaches Hansgrohe to respect nature, on which we have always been reliant. It is therefore extremely natural for us to use the elements of water and energy responsibly. In fact, Hansgrohe has always regarded itself as a crusader of environmental protection – long before “sustainability” became a corporate buzz word. The company was one of the first in the sector to promote resource-conserving technologies. Sustainability is a central topic that covers multiple aspects, including ecological, economical and social responsibility. A bathroom in which people should enjoy a sense of wellbeing for more than 20 years has high demands in terms of sustainability: a design that will outlive all fashion trends, durable materials and excellent innovative strength in matters of quality and technology.

Hansgrohe develops the first water-saving shower, which uses 50% less water than previous showers.

Hansgrohe puts into operation Germany’s largest photovoltaic plant and produces its own solar power.

Hansgrohe generates its own electricity from its solar tower in the Offenburg plant and is a pioneer in eco-architecture.

The Pontos grey water recycling system treats shower and bath water, making it reusable, for example for flushing a toilet.

The first Hansgrohe water symposium takes place. Experts, scientists and practitioners examine a broad range of water-related topics in lectures and workshops.

Eco-Smart technology reduces the water consumption of all Axor mixers from 7 to 5 litres per minute through a pressure-independent flow limiter.

HOTEL MANDARIN ORIENTAL BARCELONA/SPAIN · Architect: Carlos Ferrater, Barcelona/Spain · Interior designer: Patricia Urquiola, Milan/Italy · Collection: Axor Urquiola · Rooms: 98 The Mandarin Oriental hotel is located on the elegant Passeig de Gràcia shopping street, just a stone’s throw away from Gaudí’s famous Casa Batlló. Born in Spain, the award-winning designer Patricia Urquiola uses her interior design concept to highlight the Asian roots of the Hong Kong hotel group and reinterprets the luxurious oasis with her European perspective. Her characteristic style mix can be seen in every corner: abstract flowers blossom on an orange silk rug, gold leaf clouds adorn the ceilings and golden grilles resemble the wrought-iron gates of Barcelona. The Axor Urquiola collection harmoniously blends into bathrooms.

PARKROYAL ON PICKERING SINGAPORE · Architects and interior designers: WOHA, Singapore · Collection: Axor Urquiola · Rooms: 367 · Green area: 15,000 m2 This award-winning project, often referred to as a “hotel in a garden”, is a paradigm of green architecture. Each room looks out onto lush greenery: either the garden terraces or nearby Hong Lim Park. Collected rainwater covers the water requirements. Exclusively natural products or recycled materials are used in the bathrooms. So the mixers from Axor Urquiola, which look just like they evolved naturally, integrate perfectly into the bathroom environment.

VILLA MAGNOLIA MOUGINS/FRANCE · Architects and interior designers: Sotyrys Pantopulos and Aleksander Pantopulos, digital effect design studio, Krakow, Poland · Collections: Axor Bouroullec, Axor Massaud, Axor Urquiola, Axor Citterio M, Axor Starck, Axor Starck X Mougins is a small medieval town near Nice in the South of France and was once a retreat for artists and prominent figures such as Picasso, Édith Piaf or Jacques Brel. The Villa Magnolia is situated on a hill among pine trees and cypresses, covering an area of 1,000 square metres, and features a patio, garden, swimming pool, and every luxury you can think of – modern yet classic. The façade’s white sandstone and exotic Okoumé wood give the Villa a unique aesthetic charm. The nine bathrooms were each inspired by the bathroom concepts of different designers, including Antonio Citterio, Patricia Urquiola and Jean-Marie Massaud.

Many of the 405 rooms and suites offer views of one of the tallest buildings in the world, the Taipei 101. PVD technology (Physical Vapor Deposition) is a modern, environmentallyfriendly method of producing special finishes. The waterfall spout is both a shelf area and a small spa. On the bath tub it is used for filling, in the shower the vitalising flood jet can be used for massaging the neck.

MAKING THE BATHROOM MORE HOMELY Natural materials, warm colours and a sense of open space all create a greater sensation of well-being in the bathroom. Well-thought-out light planning and matching shower products help create the cosy, relaxing atmosphere. This room concept was inspired by Nendo’s WaterDream and implemented by Fön Design, Schramberg, Germany.

The room within a room is transformed into a place of tranquillity and contemplation:

· Bathroom cube within the living area separates the bathroom from the rest of the living space, yet integrates it at the same time · The platform and steps promote the sensation of a place of retreat · The bathroom opens out into the living space with the aid of a floor-to-ceiling window, which offers views right through to the living area

A well-thought-out lighting concept can also help to create a cosy atmosphere:

· Indirect lighting can be used for comforting ambient lighting, e.g. via circumferential light strips · Set the light focus, e.g. using a shower product with integrated atmospheric light

A welcoming style of interior design invites you to spend more time in the bathroom:

DIVIDING INTO FEEL-GOOD AND FUNCTIONAL AREAS HOW CAN A BATHROOM BE TRANSFORMED INTO AN ELEGANT FEEL-GOOD SPACE? With relaxation and well-being the overriding incentives, the bathroom needs to offer a better quality of life, it should be the ideal place to spend time. It is moving away from being a purely functional room, where all that is required is getting clean, and moving more towards being a source of relaxation, a place where the soul is also cleansed. Dividing the bathroom into functional

and feel-good areas creates a sense of architectural calm and allows us to experience the richness of water. Transparent doors and large window fronts make for useful division and create a cosy ambience. Antonio Citterio has created this room concept using the Axor Citterio collection (pp. 160/161).

Window front

Large window fronts let lots of natural light into the bathroom.

Room-in-room

The functional area including toilet and bidet is situated in the centre of the bathroom and this is also where the bulk of water-carrying installations are located. A transparent glass sliding door separates this from the feel-good area. Feel-good area

Double wash basins are integrated into the living area, offering ample opportunity to celebrate water and to relax.

The segmentation concept can be implemented easily in smaller areas. Transparent wall and door elements help with this. These divide the areas and help the room retain its sense of spaciousness.

THE FUSION OF BATHROOM AND BEDROOM

Filter area

A RETREAT FOR MANY DIFFERENT PERSONALITIES

The boundary between outside and inside is blurred by large windows and lots of plants.

Opening up the bathroom to the bedroom creates free space that can be used in a variety of ways. The result is one spacious entity with fluent transitions – smoothly separated by a screen, which provides intimacy even with the opened-up space. A communicative space, providing a place where people can live side-by-side in harmony, yet at the same time offering an opportunity to retreat to somewhere private.

Bathroom/living environment

Chill-out and relaxation area merge into a harmonious retreat.

Room dividers

A paravent serves as a privacy screen and constitutes the casual separation of bedroom and bathroom.

Separate areas within the bathroom cater to the individual needs of different personalities: Instead of the classic double wash basin, individually furnished wash basins facing each other provide the necessary privacy. In the two separate bath tubs, each person can adjust the temperature to whatever is ideal for their personal taste – while still being able to communicate with the other person. Plants play an important role in this feel-good bathroom: as a privacy screen and a feel-good stimulus. Patricia Urquiola has implemented this fusion of bathroom and bedroom in her Axor Urquiola dream bathroom (pp. 80/81).

Privacy

Two bath tubs and separate, individually furnished wash basins provide both intimacy and individuality, enabling both people to share the bathroom at the same time.

The fusion of bedroom and bathroom can also be implemented for small floor plans. The filter area incorporating the shower is flooded with natural light, and the plants give it the semblance of a conservatory. The paravent serves as a privacy screen with the added function of a radiator.

Glass

Foliage plants are a feel-good stimulus within the bathroom and the natural transition to the outside world.

Glass surfaces with graphical patterns serve as privacy screens. They also stimulate the imagination of the viewer and are playfully relaxing.

Wood blinds will ensure that daylight forms a natural part of the room design and atmosphere.

HARMONY BETWEEN MAN, NATURE, SPACE AND TECHNOLOGY The bathroom is transformed into a living environment. Here we can feel good. It is integrated into the rest of the home and is in harmony with the bedroom, both forming a single entity. Separated by a sliding door, both rooms merge seamlessly into one another. Users can enjoy an intimate experience with nature and water, in a spacious bathing and living environment. The free-standing bath tub evokes the sensation of floating on a lake. Wooden platforms make it appear as if you are on a beach, inviting you to linger a while. Natural materials on floor and wall bring a natural feel to the architecture of the room. Jean-Marie Massaud was inspired by nature for his Axor Massaud bathroom. You can find the Axor Massaud bathroom on pp. 42/43.

The small nature-inspired bathroom

This nature-inspired bathroom concept can also be created in a smaller space, such as a hotel bathroom: A glass pane behind the bath tub creates the impression of open space going towards the bedroom, and the use of plenty of wood conveys a warm, natural feel.

STYLISH FUSION OF OLD AND NEW Renovation of an old building provides an excellent opportunity to enhance the living environment while retaining the existing features. Old and new can be beautifully combined: original herringbone parquet and stucco encounter fresh neon yellow and modern furnishings. Exposed installation products are particularly suitable for renovation in the shower, as they can be installed on existing pipe work and fittings. The bathroom in the old building was designed and developed by Fön Design from Schramberg, Germany, based on the Axor Showerpipe designed by Front (pp. 218/219).

THE ORGANIC, MINIMALIST BATHROOM The ideal organic, minimalist bathroom, planned in an area of 16 m2: indoors and outdoors, nature and architecture, bathroom and bedroom all merge into one. The open shower area turns the room into a sensual spa. The toilet and bidet are sensibly separated from the feel-good area. This room concept was inspired by the Axor Starck Organic collection (p. 56) and developed by the ippolito fleiz group architectural office, Stuttgart/Germany.

The wash basin is a monolith, as a dominant feature placed in the centre of the bathroom.

Organic window front

The curved window front acts as the architectural connection between the bedroom and bathroom area; outside and inside merge.

What we need is harmony.

The curved, floor-to-ceiling window lets in huge amounts of daylight and creates interesting shadow play. The interior opens up into the natural world. Inside and outside blend harmoniously into one another. The skylight above the wash basin and the shower creates a refined, homely atmosphere in the bathroom.

The effect created by the clearly structured room layout and the separation of the shower and toilet from the rest of the bathroom. There is also space for a freestanding bath tub and a wash basin console.
