About the Scales Which scales to practise There are thousands of scales, any of which can be useful to know. I have not intended this book to be a I have chosen just a few of the more common scales here that are useful for jazz and/or blues saxophone playing. How to practise scales Obviously it is important to know scales in all keys. I have laid out these scales here as single octave scales which proceed round a cycle of fifths, however I suggest you practise scales over the entire range of the instrument. I have not shown them all here like that for two reasons. First, by the time you are ready to play them over the entire range you should be able to it without reading them off the page. Second, this book is primarily intended to give you some ideas of what to practise beyond scales. In the appendix at the end are some tips on different ways to practise the scales. Using the cycle is a useful way to practise major and minor scales. If you do not already know the cycle of fifths, this will help you get a feel for it. Note that the root of each scale is a fifth lower (or fourth higher) than the previous one. Also one flat is added to, or one sharp removed from, the key signature. All the major and minor seven notes scales are shown here moving from one to the next using the cycle of fifths. The pentatonic (five note) scales move chromatically. Thers is no harm in learning either way or making up your own. Alternatively it is useful to practise over two octaves or the entire range of the saxophone. You might want to just concentrate on a few scales at a time, especially if your practice sessions are limited. If so, I suggest that you make sure that you donʼt just practise the easier scales. It is useful to concentrate on one easy, one medium and one difficult scale at a time and work on these for maybe one week, then switch to a different set. A good method I find is to use the notes from a diminished chord as your keys to practise, there will be a good mix of easy and difficult keys: Week

Although I have written most of these out in all keys, once you know a scale well you should be able to play it from memory in all keys. The important thing is to listen and think about the intervals.
