I. Behavioral Interviews: A Prediction of Future Job Performance Hiring managers and human resource professionals employ the behavioral interview, also called a situational interview, frequently during the hiring process. This type of interview is very effective as an assessment tool to ascertain candidate performance, identify key skill competencies, and indicate future success in a position. Behavioral interviews utilize situational based questions asking candidates to identify a specific time in the past that they have utilized their skill sets to handle common problems or issues on the job. Questions asked during an interview usually reflect the same types of situations an employee would face in a particular position or role within an organization. Interviewers listen for the types of skills and strategies that candidates have used in the past to determine if those same skills match the ones needed for the position. Generally, employers will first assess the position available, determine the skills and characteristics needed to be successful in that position, and design a set of behavioral questions that will allow a candidate to illustrate their competency in the defined areas. Even if a candidate does not have directly related experience in a particular field, an employer is able to determine if the skills that they have used in the past would enable them to be successful in their organization. Because of behavioral interviews unique ability to predict the future job performance of interview candidates, they are commonly used during the hiring process.

II. Answering Questions Based on Experience Many entry-level graduates, career changers, and professionals re-entering the workforce fear these types of interviews as they may not possess much related work experience to draw upon during the interview. Examples used during behavioral interviews can come from a variety of experience areas outside of employment. Class projects, papers, group assignments, volunteer work, and organization or church involvement are great resources to use during the interview. Examples used should be specific instances involving a particular issue, not general scenarios that occur in a similar manner. Answers to questions should use examples from a variety of areas to illustrate the breadth of a candidate’s experience in different types of environments. However, using occurrences from one’s personal life should be avoided as well as examples that focus on negative instead of positive aspects. Related work, internship, co-op or careerrelated experiences should be emphasized the most. 1

III. Utilizing the STAR Technique The STAR technique is a simple, easy to use formula for answering interview questions and provides a template to assist candidates in describing their experience in a concise, yet thorough manner, emphasizing their skills. The Action is the most important aspect of the STAR technique as it provides the opportunity to describe to an employer competencies in the key skill areas they are seeking. S T A

IV. Sample Answer to a Behavioral Interview Question Question: Tell me about a project you initiated. Answer: During my internship with a small marketing firm, I noticed that our customer service to clients could be greatly improved. On many occasions, potential customers would request information on our services but would have to wait for a return call from sales representatives who were frequently away from the office. I thought we could improve service and sales to these clients if specially trained front office staff processed calls. I approached my supervisor about my idea, and she supported it and suggested that we discuss it with the entire sales team at our next meeting. I presented my idea at the meeting along with an outline of a plan, timeline for implementation, resources needed, and different options for execution. The sales team approved the concept and selected one of the approaches. I trained all of the staff on the new system for servicing customers inquiring about our services. I also created a client intake form, flow cart and information sheet for staff to use as a quick reference guide when working with customers. The staff was instructed to send clients information packets on our services via mail, fax, or e-mail. The changes to servicing clients helped the front office staff feel more involved in the marketing goals of the company, enabled sales representatives to have more detailed information on clients prior to conducting initial calls, and created more of a team atmosphere within the organization. Service to clients greatly increased and customers praised the prompt attention. S

V. Common Transferable Skills, Traits, and Characteristics Employers Seek These are some common skills, traits, and characteristics that employers seek when selecting candidates in the interview process. Employers usually do not require candidates to possess a high degree of capability in all of the areas listed. However, being able to identify and explain situations or experiences for many of the competencies is important. In some fields or positions, a greater degree of emphasis may be placed on certain key skills. The goal of an interview candidate is to incorporate their knowledge and effectiveness in one or more of the competencies in answers to interview questions. Candidates will find it helpful to research the positions they are seeking to gain a greater understanding of what skill sets are needed for a particular role or field of employment. Analysis
