IDEA • Naturally colored cotton is believed to have originated in the Americas around 5000 years ago. • Naturally colored cotton today mostly comes from pre-Columbian stocks created by the indigenous peoples of South America. • Mochica Indians could be attributed with growing naturally colored cotton of myriad hues, which they maintained for over the last two millenniums on the northern coast of Peru.

ANALYSIS • A new arrival on the Western fashion market, naturally pigmented cotton originally flourished some 5,000 years ago. • Naturally colored cotton had a smaller fiber which was not suitable for mechanical looms used today, so this kept it from entering the commercial market. • In 1982, Sally Fox a graduate in Integrated Pest Management from University of California with a master's degree started researching on colored cotton and integrated her knowledge and experience in technology and introduced first long fiber of naturally colored cotton. • Natural color in cotton comes from pigments found in cotton pigments and produce shades ranging from tan to green and brown. • Naturally colored cotton is unique and exceptionally different from white cotton as it does not need to be dyed.

ANALYSIS (CONTD…) • Fabrics from naturally coloured cotton improves its fastness and colour intensity with each washing. • The dyeing process is omitted when naturally coloured lint is used for manufacturing of the fabric. • The naturally colored cotton has a small fiber and is not suitable for heavy machine spinning.

SUCCESS STORY BRAZIL

• During the 1980s, local production fell in both quality and quantity, and the region began to import cotton rather than sell it. • At the turn of the 21st century, Vieira was the owner of a typical clothing to give rise to Natural Cotton Color (NCC), a company entirely based on local products and employing only local labor. • NCC uses an innovative type of cotton, which is organic and naturally occurs in different shades of brown. • “A naturally colored cotton is not a novelty in itself,” says Vieira, “but these fibers were very thin and short, and therefore couldn’t be used to manufacture clothes. After 10 years of research, Embrapa developed a fiber long enough to be used by us.” FIRST UP CONSULTANTS

IMPLEMENTATION IN PAKISTAN • In Pakistan it is grown on approximately 2.8 million hectares, out of a total cultivated area of 20 million hectares. • It accounts for more than 50 per cent of our foreign exchange earnings.

• Cotton production supports 281 textile mills, 991 ginneries and 281 oil expellers. • About one third of the industrial labour is employed in various cotton-based industries. • There is a strong relationship between cotton growth and the country’s overall GDP growth. • It serves as both, a cash crop as well as cheap raw material for the industry. 12

IMPLEMENTATION IN PAKISTAN (CONTD…) • It is also an important cash crop of Pakistan known as “white gold”. • In Pakistan, research work has been started at Cotton Research Institute (SRI), Sakrand in Sindh, Central Cotton Research Institute (CCRI), Multan in Punjab and some other research stations and results are promising. • The natural colored cotton is getting popular due to firmness of color, disease resistance, and better fiber characteristics. • Recognizing the importance of natural colored cotton, CRI Sakrand has started transferring fiber color genes from exotic ones into local high yielding and early maturing varieties. • If the commercial cultivation of colored cotton becomes fruitful in Pakistan, it can open doors for new vistas. • Already there has been an effort to produce dyed yarn cones in Pakistan to produce fabrics with different stripes and patterns.

IMPLEMENTATION IN PAKISTAN (CONTD…) • Pakistan can gain significantly from production of colored cotton for a number of reasons. • In future, some of the local manufacturers can focus on this specific market proposing higher profit margin.

CONCLUSION • It is evident that Pakistan has great potential of Cotton Cultivation. • It is now the responsibility of our Government to provide proper advanced platforms to farmers and also conduct proper training and awareness sessions regarding Different Cotton Cultivation. • It would be in the best interest of the country if the incumbent government chalks out a plan to increase cotton production. • The new agriculture policy should ensure that sugarcane and wheat production should be brought down to the level to only to meet local consumption since surplus production of these two crops has to be exported by providing subsidies. • Hence cotton production should be maximised and there should be exportable surplus since it never needed subsidy on exports.
