Introduction to Computer Viruses  What is a Computer Virus? 

A computer virus is an executable code that can replicate it self and invade computer systems.  These virus programs should be triggered or somehow executed before they infect the computer systems.  There are many types of viruses and some of them are very harmful and some are not.

History of Computer Viruses John Von Neumann was the first person who gave the idea about self replicating programs in 1949.

In 1981 the first computer virus ‘Elk Cloner’ was designed and infected Apple Dos operating system. The first virus which was spread world wide (in 1992)was ‘Michelangelo’.

 The first viruses for Windows 95 and Linux operating system came to the field in 1996.  Since then many kind of viruses came to the field and in the present computer viruses have became an major problem for computer users.

Similar Technologies Trojan Horse : A destructive program that has been disguised an innocuous piece of software.

Worms : These are designed to infiltrate legitimate data processing programs and destroy the data.

Spywares :

collects small chunks of personal & confidential information at a time without user knowledge.

Logic Bombs: Similar program to Trojan Horse but Logic bombs include timing device.
