Stories about Yahuarcocha lagoon

At the province of Imbabura around 1486 near to a lagoon a confrontation took place between the Incas Caranquis and culminating in the triumph of Inca Huayna Capac. Following this confrontation more than 30,000 men died. After Huayna Capac declared victory in his favor he ordered to kill all men able to continue with arms. On account of throwing the bodies into the lake and color it took, the Indians called it “Yahuarcocha” (Yahuar-blood and Cocha-lagoon), the name by which it is known until today.

There is also another story about the lagoon. In the place where there is now the lagoon, there was a huge state. One afternoon an old man came asking for alms, to get to the gate the clerk received him, owing to that situation the clerk warned the owners but they were told not give anything and release the dogs. In spite of happening that the old man said to the clerk: “Tomorrow this state will become a lake, so I warn you take your stuff and be saved”. She astonished by what happened took his things and followed the road to her home. Next day the girl came back to confirm what the old man had said and so was the place where the property is located. In addition to teaching her’s children, she told “It has been a punishment from God”.
