Overview

The active antenna system (AAS) is a new type of RF module, which incorporates the functions of the RRU and antenna. Compared with a conventional site where the RRU and antenna are separated from each other, an AAS site has the following advantages: 

Simplified site resources

Easier installation

Reduced jumper loss and energy consumption

As the mobile broadband (MBB) develops rapidly, multimode and multiband base stations have become the mainstream products. However, the increasing site complexity and module addition considerably raise the operating expense (OPEX). Simplification of sites is becoming a trend in building multimode and multiband networks. In addition, with the increase in LTE UEs, the hotspot area capacity and coverage problems are becoming a major concern of the operators. To help operators conquer those challenges, Huawei took the lead in introducing the AAS technology and launched AAU series products. 

Multiband AAU series This series requires less rooftop space.

Easy Macro series This series makes quick deployment possible.

Multi-antenna multi-channel AAU series This series improves the network capacity.

Easy Macro series products feature small size, light weight, environment integration, and easy deployment. They are preferentially selected for site densification in urban areas. The AAU5942 is one of these products. It boasts the following characteristics: 

It uses software-defined band (SDB) technology so that it flexibly meets requirements in different coverage scenarios for operators.

It reduces about 0.8 dB feeder loss and further enhances coverage capability by integrating the RF module to the antenna.

It adopts an elegant design and facilitates site acquisition. It is mainly applied to a street-pole-mounted site, a rooftop site, and a wall-mounted site. It can be installed on the pole or wall.

As recommended in 3GPP TS 51.021, the GSM receiver sensitivity is measured at the antenna connector, assuming that the channel rate is 13 kbit/s and the bit error rate (BER) is lower than or equal to 2%.

As recommended in 3GPP TS 25.104, the UMTS receiver sensitivity is the receiver sensitivity measured at the antenna connector minus the antenna gain, assuming that the channel rate is 12.2 kbit/s and the BER is lower than or equal to 0.001.

As recommended in 3GPP TS 36.104, the LTE FDD receiver sensitivity is the receiver sensitivity measured based on the FRC A1-3 in Annex A.1 (QPSK, R = 1/3, 25 RBs) standard minus the antenna gain, assuming that the bandwidth is 5 MHz.

As recommended in 3GPP TS 36.104, the LTE NB-IoT receiver sensitivity is measured based on the FRC A14-1 in Annex A.14 (π/2 BPSK, R = 1/3, one RB) standard, assuming that the bandwidth is 200 kHz and the subcarrier spacing is 15 kHz.
