5. PLANNING A KITCHEN

A kitchen can be more than just a place to prepare meals. For many families, it’s the heart of the home and the “nerve center” where family members gather to talk, work, eat meals and sometimes even entertain guests especially if they are close friends. Designing a kitchen – whether brand new or remodeling – can be fun but definitely a challenging task. Our Kitchen Planners walks you through the critical stages of the process. The kitchen is one of the busiest and most expensive rooms in the home and it should be planned to save time and energy for those who work in it. A well-planned kitchen can prevent hazards that might cause fatal accidents and at the same time it can also provide a pleasant environment for family members. An idea of total space, in relation to the area required for the work center, may help in the kitchen planning. Kitchen planners generally use these figures:

Table 5.1: Area calculation for kitchen planning Small Kitchen Medium Kitchen Large Kitchen

8 feet by 10 feet to 10 feet Square 10 feet square to 10 feet x 12 feet 10 feet x 12 feet and Above

These are the standard sizes that work well for the average person. Very tall or short individuals may want to customize some of these dimensions. Bear in mind, however, that variations from standard sizes may add to the cost of the kitchen and make the house harder to sell.

16

5.1 DESIGN Do not blindly ape the kitchen you see in a showroom. Instead, understand your needs and design your kitchen accordingly. Depending on the space available, you could go for a U-, C- or an L-shaped kitchen. Once you have a basic layout in place, figure out the electrical points for your chimney, oven, microwave and other electrical appliances. You will also have to identify the spot for your sink because the plumbing will have to be worked accordingly. Once this is done, you can proceed to design the cabinets.

Fig 5.1: Modular Kitchen Design Out went the idea of the kitchen as service area, where servants scrubbed, chopped and boiled. In came the open family space, where friends hovered, teenagers nibbled and children did homework. In the current scenario the kitchen has become the heart of the modern house. People want to express themselves through their kitchens. So you need to plan your modular kitchen design accordingly but obviously you can’t always change the structural shape of a kitchen, but many arrangements are possible in the same room. It is a matter of finding the most suitable modular kitchen designs from an aesthetical and well-designed point of view. Three designs showing different types of modular kitchens can be seen in the next pages:

17

All the features are well blended and look really charming.

5.2 STORAGE Use the kitchen area intelligently to create maximum storage space. To exploit the depth of the kitchen corner, you can have pull-out cabinets installed from floor to ceiling. Overhead storage cabinets are also a good way to create extra space. Remember, however, not to clutter the kitchen. Instead, classify your storage areas as per your needs. For instance, have a handy pantry in place for everyday ingredients, while things used occasionally can be stored at less accessible locations.

5.3 ACCESSORIES & APPLIANCES The most common appliances in modular kitchens are ovens with microwave and heat features. You can also install grills that combine a stove top and grill oven. While choosing appliances, always install ones that suit your needs instead of picking the ones you see in the showroom. For instance, the cost of an electric chimney can range from Rs. 8,000 to a little over Rs. 1 lakh. It does not make sense for you to opt for the high-end one if your kitchen does not have the required, built-in technology to use the chimney optimally.

5.4 MATERIAL The kind of material you opt for affects the cost of building the kitchen. Choosing average quality plywood will significantly lower the cost compared with marble or granite. However, do not choose a material based solely on price. Consider the effect of humidity, water, heat, friction and load on the material.

19

The best materials to use for kitchen flooring will vary with the tastes and budgets of homeowners and with how homeowners plan to use their kitchen spaces. While some flooring types offer superior aesthetic value, others offer more functional or practical benefits, such as durability, low maintenance, low costs and ease of installation. The best material for your kitchen floor will depend on how you value these different characteristics and how they apply to your particular domestic situation.

Fig 9.1: Design of Kitchen Flooring Materials

Marble Marble is one of the most renowned kitchen flooring options when it comes to style, beauty and elegance. As FlooringSpeciality.com notes, people use marble flooring to create formal kitchen spaces. One of the most expensive natural stones, marble comes in a variety of colors but often has a white base and always has mottling or streaks of other colors mixed in. And while one of the best materials aesthetically, marble requires lots of maintenance and is susceptible to damage from acidic items like vinegar and lemons. 26

Slate If you are looking for a natural stone kitchen floor that can create character without requiring intensive maintenance, slate is one of the best options. According to FlooringSpeciality.com, this "rugged yet beautiful," nonporous material is waterproof, stain resistant and highly durable. And while typically gray, green or bluish in color, you can also find slate flooring sheets in shades of red and beige. To maintain slate kitchen floors, you simply need to mop them with warm water. Laminate While slate is typically less expensive than marble, it is still on the pricier end in the scheme of kitchen flooring materials. One of the more affordable materials is laminate flooring, which comes in planks and consists of several fused layers of composite material. Through coloring, patterning and texturing, manufacturers can make laminate flooring resemble a variety of surfaces, including tile, brick, stone and wood. According to IFloor, as of 2010 laminate floors are the most popular choices for kitchen flooring, which is largely due to the floors' durability, affordability and beauty. Vinyl / Linoleum Tiles Vinyl and linoleum tiles are some of the most affordable kitchen flooring options. In addition they are some of the easiest to install, which makes the tiles a good option for do it yourselfers. As The Flooring Lady notes, the tiles are available with peel-and-stick backs, allowing you to simply adhere them to a subfloor without having to toil with mortars or adhesives. Choosing tiles with glossy finishes, however, can be dangerous if you have small children as the tiles can get very slippery. Cork / Rubber Cork and rubber kitchen flooring materials are rising in popularity. In addition to being softer than other flooring types, making them ideal for small children, the floors are hygienic, which means they are unlikely to harbor mold and bacteria.

This population segment is educated, on the move and requires kitchen furniture that is modular, efficient and trendy. Henceforth concepts are proposed and a physical prototype built that meets user requirements. The thesis takes a bold step ahead in adding an interactive element to concepts which might become a standard in the future .This thesis however could not succeed on the front of physical realization of all proposed smart features in kitchen. There were technical problems during development and the present prototype is just a step forward. However, it does assimilate important facts from users, trends in market and creates a usable product. The contributions of this dissertation are stated as under. 1. This thesis gives out a step by step approach which should be carried out in developing commercial furniture starting from need identification to physical product development and beyond. The author hopes that the process followed could be useful to unorganized or small scale industries in gaining competency. 2. The thesis also documents relevant anthropometric data, important guidelines necessary for planning any kitchen space or furniture. Reference to this thesis work would acts as a quick guide to Indian ladies in creating efficient kitchens. 3. To the best of author’s knowledge, a concept like this for mobile kitchen does not exist at present in the market. Future refinement of the idea on these lines and development could create an indigenous product of high value. This thesis is only a small step towards future development of an efficient smart kitchen. There is scope of work over how physical embodiment of existing technology in communication, information display, robotics etc takes place into the kitchen furniture in future.
