Outer Journey:

What are the rules of the new situation?

Show their everyday life.

There is frequently a new location involved.

Create empathy with the protagonist.

The desire is still fuzzy.

Inner Journey Living fully in protag’s identity. Protag is stuck in a rut, which is an analogy for being stuck in their identity.

They don’t think they’re going into anything difficult.

The plan is working. All obstacles are dealt with, progress continues. But there are obstacles.

Inner Journey:

Tug of war between identity and essence. The hero goes back and forth. He keeps getting thrown into his essence.

Now it’s going to be way more difficult to achieve goal. Other forces of nature start coming at the hero (other conflict).

Opportunity

Outer: Something happens to hero that has never happened to him before. The event creates a desire in the hero, a preliminary goal.

Stage 5: Final Push Hero tries to go live the life he was living at the beginning, but he can’t, too much has changed. Now he’s got to make the new reality work.

Pace accelerates.

Inner Journey: Inner Journey: Steadily moving toward his essence.

Get a glimpse of what living in her essence might be like.

Show the hero living in their new life now that they’ve achieved their goal.

Inner Journey: He is now living completely in his essence.

He has had a taste of living in his essence and liked it. He’s got to be strong, make that final push and give up the identity he’s hidden behind for so long.

Inner at TP3: Vacillating between identity and essence will stop when they begin to let go of identity.

Turning Point 2: Change of Plans Outer: Larger goal is established and a plan on how to achieve it. Inner: Hero starts to move into his essence.

Turning Point 4: Major Setback

Outer: Hero is closer to the end point. He is fully committed to goal and declares this publicly. He burns his bridges and as soon as he does so every falls apart.

Outer: All is lost. Hero is doomed to failure.

Inner: At threat of failure hero retreats into identity. Worst fear comes true.
